岩下明裕他編 北東アジアにおける地政学
Iwashita, Akihiro / Ha, Yong-Chool / Boyle, Edward (eds.), Geo-Politics in Northeast Asia. (Politics in Asia) 264 pp. 2022:8 (Routledge, UK) <675-749>
ISBN 978-1-03-226380-9 hard ¥38,907.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

Geo-Politics in Northeast Asia focuses on the dynamics of Northeast Asia as a region. The chapters in this book offer a nuanced approach for understanding the geo-politics of this strategically critical area of the world. Focusing on China, Japan, Russia, and the Koreas, as well as the involvement of the United States, the contributors to the volume offer a timely and critical analysis of Northeast Asia. They collectively emphasize the different scales at which the region holds significance, and particularly note how the region is often granted significance by local political forces as well as national interests. Borderlands and sub-regions are especially important in this perspective, and the contributors show both how regionalism influences the people living in these areas and how they in turn shape the political priorities of states. At the same time, the worsening of relations between Japan and the Koreas and the increasing assertiveness of both China and Russia make it essential to understand the dynamics of the region, as well as how they have changed during and following the Trump era.Geo-Politics in Northeast Asia is essential reading for students and scholars of Political Geography, International Relations and Strategic Studies, as well as for those with a research focus on Northeast Asia, or the wider Asia-Pacific and Indo-Pacific regions.

インド太平洋における多国間主義
Singh, Swaran / Marwah, Reena (eds.), Multilateralism in the Indo-Pacific: Conceptual and Operational Challenges. (Routledge Studies on Think Asia) 192 pp. 2022:8 (Routledge, UK) <675-757>
ISBN 978-1-03-224469-3 hard ¥38,907.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This book focuses on emerging new multilateralism in the Indo-Pacific and offers a useful analysis of various existing and evolving formulations and alignments in the region. The book problematises the evolution, relevance and changing contours of emerging economic and security architectures and connects these to various unilateral and multilateral initiatives that undergird the overall transformation in these economic and strategic multilaterals in this region. The chapters offer a comprehensive overview of organisations and institutions, and the contributors provide their historical background and contemporary focus with implications for the future. Consequently, the book provides a balanced assessment of evolving trends elucidated by both its theoretical debates and empirical analyses. It assesses the outline and influence of non-traditional threats that have received only stand-alone, and not integrated, examination involving issues as climate change, piracy, smuggling and terrorist activity, triggering a whole gamut of humanitarian and disaster relief strategies.Comprehensive in analysis and approach, the book will be of interest to scholars of Political Science, Foreign Policy, Security Studies, International Relations, International Political Economy and Area Studies, including Asian, East Asian or Indo-Pacific Studies.

Patton, Joy S., Predicting Leader Survival in Covert Operations from Congo to Cuba. 190 pp. 2022:2 (Lexington Books, US) <675-779>
ISBN 978-1-79364-171-7 hard ¥22,440.- (税込) US$ 100.00 *

This book explores the unique relationship between covert action and leader survival. Specifically, how leadership styles and personality traits influence this relationship. The life of a ruler is ephemeral. For those who are lucky, their exit from office is through retirement or old age. For most, their tenure is short, often ending through violent means. The overthrow of rulers by their rivals is a common theme throughout world history, and the strategy remains a popular choice in contemporary warfare. However, despite the frequency of regime change, very little is discussed in international relations about covert regime change and its effects on leader survival.

Chung, Kuyoun / Cho, Wobin (eds.), New Democracy and Autocratization in Asia. (Routledge Studies on Think Asia) 240 pp. 2022:8 (Routledge, UK) <675-788>
ISBN 978-1-03-222069-7 hard ¥41,789.- (税込) GB£ 145.00 *

This book examines the quality of democracies in Asia and determines why current democracies-especially during the so-called "new normal" era following the 2008 financial crisis-have become less stable and less resilient to increasing authoritarianism.Based on the assumption that the concept of democracy consists of three elements-procedure (participation, competition, and distribution of power); effectiveness (representation, accountability, and responsiveness); and performance (social welfare, inequality, and trust)-the contributors to this book determine which elements are responsible for diverging trajectories within the Asian democratic recession. Examining South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Myanmar, and China, the authors employ different research methods-quantitative, comparative, or individual case studies-to explore the conditions under which democratic rules and norms erode over time, and which type of governance is preferred by citizens in this region as an ideal type. The book puts forward the argument that a procedure-oriented concept of democracy is not sufficient for understanding the source of democratic recession and develops a new concept of "new democracy" based on procedure, effectiveness, and performance. It also demonstrates to what extent the experience changes and how the countries respond to these changes.A novel contribution on the state of democracy in Asia written by experts from the region, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of political science, especially comparative politics and international relations, regional study of East and Southeast Asia, sociology, public policy, economics, and social science methods. Also, this book will appeal to think tanks and policy-oriented researchers.

Dudgeon, David, Threatened Freshwater Animals of Tropical East Asia: Ecology and Conservation in a Rapidly Changing Environment. (Routledge Studies in Conservation and the Environment) 344 pp. 2022:8 (Routledge, UK) <675-789>
ISBN 978-0-367-69710-5 hard ¥38,907.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This book offers a comprehensive account of the current state of inland waters in tropical and subtropical East Asia, exploring a series of case studies of freshwater fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals and water bodies at particular risk. The book highlights the rich freshwater biodiversity of tropical East Asia and draws attention to the various threats it faces due to human activities and rapid environmental change. It addresses the question of whether the contributions of these animals and habitats, or biodiversity in general, to ecosystem functioning and service provision provide sufficient basis for arguments supporting nature conservation. Drawing on instances from the rivers and lakes of tropical East Asia, the book also asks whether the benefits accruing from intact ecosystems are likely to be enough to ensure their preservation. If the answer to either or both these questions is 'no', then what are the prospects for freshwater biodiversity in rapidly changing tropical East Asia? This book will be of interest to students and scholars of biodiversity, conservation, freshwater ecology, ecosystem services and Asian Studies.

アジアにおける奴隷制と奴隷的拘束 1550~1850年-強制労働のグローバルヒストリーに向けて
Ekama, Kate / Hellman, Lisa / Rossum, M. v. (eds.), Slavery and Bondage in Asia, 1550-1850: Towards a Global History of Coerced Labour. (Dependency and Slavery Studies 3) 250 S. 2022 (de Gruyter, GW) <675-790>
ISBN 978-3-11-077612-6 hard ¥21,865.- (税込) EUR 89.95 *

The study of slavery and coerced labour is increasingly applying a global perspective. And yet, a dual Eurocentric bias remains: Slavery primarily brings to mind the images of Atlantic chattel slavery, and studies of work have either outright or implicitly been based on a model of northern European wage labour. This book constitutes an attempt to re-centre that story to Asia. With studies spanning the western Indian Ocean and the steppes of Central Asia to the islands of South East Asia and Japan, and reaching from the 16th to the 19th century, this book follows coercion in diverse forms. That makes it possible to trace both similarities and differences ? as well as connections ? between systems of coercion, from the early regulation of sales to post-abolition labour contracts. Deep empirical case studies, as well as comparisons between the chapters, all show that while coercion was entrenched to a number of societies, it was so in different and shifting ways. This book thereby not only makes the history of slavery and coercion in Asia a connected story, but also offers steps for how to carry out global studies of a phenomenon as varying, manifold and subject to debate as coercion.

Joshi, Devin K. / Echle, Christian (eds.), Substantive Representation of Women in Asian Parliaments. (Politics in Asia) 296 pp. 2022:8 (Routledge, UK) <675-794>

Combining data from nearly 100 interviews with national parliamentarians from ten Asian countries, the contributors to this book analyze and evaluate the advancement of gender equality in Asia.As of the year 2022, no country in Asia has gender parity in its parliament. Meanwhile, the proportion of national-level women parliamentarians in Asia averages a mere 20%. What is more important than simple descriptive representation, however, is whether outcomes for women are improving. Rather than focusing on numerical representation, the chapters in this book focus on the substantive representation of women. In other words, what do women and men parliamentarians do to advance women's well-being and gender equality? Using semi-structured interviews, the author of each chapter examines these efforts in the context of a specific Asian country. The case studies include Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Timor-Leste.The book is an essential resource for scholars and students of Asian politics and the politics of gender.

小林ハッサル柔子、高橋進之介編 トランスパシフィックなビジョン-南北を横断する太平洋の接続史-
Kobayashi, Yasuko Hassall / Takahashi, Shinnosuke (eds.), Transpacific Visions: Connected Histories of the Pacific across North and South. 286 pp. 2021:9 (Lexington Books, US) <675-795>
ISBN 978-1-79362-132-0 hard ¥29,845.- (税込) US$ 133.00 *

This book argues that transpacific history cannot be comprehended without including "vertical" connections; namely, those between the southern hemisphere and the northern hemisphere. It explores such connections by uncovering small histories of ordinary people's attempts at evenements which they undertake by means of uneven, unlevel, and multidirectional mobilities. In this way, this book goes beyond the usual notion of transpacific history as a matter of Northern Hemisphere-centric connections between the United States and Asian countries, and enables us to imagine a transpacific space as a more dynamic and multi-faceted world of human mobilities and connections. In this book, both eminent and burgeoning historians uncover the stories of little-known, myriad encounters in various parts of the Asia-Pacific region. By exploring cases whose actors include soldiers, missionaries, colonial administrators, journalists, essayists, and artists, the book highlights the significance of "vertical" perspectives in understanding complex histories of the region.

Panda, Jagannath P. (ed.), India-Japan-ASEAN Triangularity: Emergence of a Possible Indo-Pacific Axis? (Routledge Studies on Think Asia) 288 pp. 2022:7 (Routledge, UK) <675-799>
ISBN 978-1-03-207507-5 hard ¥38,907.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This book focuses on the scope, potential and future of the India-Japan-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) trilateral. Through this book, contributors examine the strategic and global partnership between India and Japan and the collaboration with ASEAN. Analysing contemporary strategic issues in the Indo-Pacific, the book takes up the complex link between security and economics. It offers a thorough understanding on how the major Asian powers, India and Japan, cooperate and coordinate with the ASEAN. It delves into few critical questions: Is there a scope for India-Japan-ASEAN triangularity in the Indo-Pacific? Can a formal or institutional cooperation be forged between these three actors? What specific cooperation could India and Japan forge with ASEAN as an institution? To what extent can each ASEAN member independently become a partner with India and Japan?A novel assessment of the post-pandemic economic and political balancing and restructuring, this book will be of interest to Asian politics, international relations, strategic studies, regional organizations in Asia and think tanks specializing in foreign policy, security studies, international trade and economics.

Zeuske, Michael, Afrika - Atlantik - Amerika: Sklaverei und Sklavenhandel in Afrika, auf dem Atlantik und in den Amerikas sowie in Europa. (Dependency and Slavery Studies 2) 400 S. 2022:9 (de Gruyter, GW) <675-803>
ISBN 978-3-11-078714-6 hard ¥20,650.- (税込) EUR 84.95 *

Marat, Erica / McCarthy, Lauren A. (eds.), Justice, Crime, and Citizenship in Eurasia: A Sociolegal Perspective. 280 pp. 2022:8 (Routledge, UK) <675-461>
ISBN 978-1-03-231207-1 hard ¥38,907.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

What role does law play in post-communist societies? This book examines the law as a social institution in Eurasia, exploring how it is shaped in everyday interactions between state and society, organisations and individuals, and between law enforcement and other government entities. It bridges the gap between theoretically rich work on law-in-action and the empirical reality of Eurasia. The contributions in this volume include research on policing, the legal profession, public attitudes towards law, regime support and oppositional mobilisation, crime policy, and property rights, among others. The studies shift away from the common perception that, in Eurasia, the law exists only as a tool for the state to enforce order and suppress dissent. Instead, they show, through empirical analyses, that citizens evade, use, reinterpret and shape the law even in authoritarian contexts-sometimes containing state violence and challenging the regime, and other times reinforcing state capture from below. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Europe-Asia Studies.

Frame, Mariko Lin, Ecological Imperialism, Development, and the Capitalist World-System: Cases from Africa and Asia. (New Political Economy) 200 pp. 2022:8 (Routledge, UK) <675-248>
ISBN 978-0-367-20410-5 hard ¥36,025.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *

Two major trends are currently challenging the sustainability of human civilization: extreme inequality and the ecological crisis. This book argues that these are intrinsically linked by further exploring the complex relationships between global ecological crises, neoliberal globalization, orthodox development policies, and imperialism.Drawn from extensive theoretical, historical, policy, and empirical research, as well as fieldwork in Africa and Asia, this book examines the crucial characteristics of the capitalist world-system and how it enables and drives ecological imperialism. Neoliberal globalization has allowed for capital's unfettered access to and exploitation of Nature across the planet, and neoliberal development policies have reinforced a contemporary form of ecological imperialism where the environments of the Global South are enclosed and exploited, and local communities are dispossessed of their land and livelihoods. Simultaneously, resources from the Global South are funneled to the Global North in the form of consumer goods and ecologically unequal exchange, while the profits from those resources are siphoned away to transnational corporations, financiers, and government elites. This work traces the historical development of free market policies, while also paying special attention to the role of Northern international financial institutions, emerging economies (the semi-periphery), and the often-hidden role of international finance in ecological imperialism. This volume will be of keen interest to scholars and students of political economy, critical development studies, environmental sociology, and political ecology.

Mnyandu, Phiwokuhle, South Africa-China Relations: Between Aspiration and Reality in a New Global Order. 206 pp. 2021:10 (Lexington Books, US) <675-249>
ISBN 978-1-79364-450-3 hard ¥23,562.- (税込) US$ 105.00 *

In South Africa-China Relations: Between Aspiration and Reality in a New Global Order, Phiwokuhle Mnyandu analyzes South Africa-China relations in the context of South Africa's quest to reduce unemployment and transform its economy to ensure lasting social stability. Mnyandu uses trade patterns, analyses of governmental organizations and initiatives, and other socio-economic data to determine the extent to which developmental change or stasis has taken place as relations between South Africa and China have deepened. Tracing South Africa's changing attitudes and policies towards China's involvement, the impact of programs involving commodities trades on unemployment, and the prospective outcomes of an endogenous developmental policy, Mnyandu concludes by proposing a quadri-linear model as a tool for more comprehensive analyses of China's relations not only with South Africa, but other African countries as well to avoid di-information on Africa-China issues.
