Globalization and Civil Society in East Asian Space. (Politics in Asia) 288 pp. 2022:12 (Routledge, UK) <687-647>
ISBN 978-0-367-48100-1 hard ¥35,612.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *
This book critically examines the impact of globalization, changing power dynamics, migration, and evolving rights regimes on regional order, discourse of national governance, state and society relations, and the development of civil society in East Asia.Providing a textured, critical reading of East Asia as an economically, socially, and politically dynamic region, this book also presents the region as one shaped simultaneously by progressive as well as regressive pulls. Attentive to prevailing issues as well as to states' and civil societies' responses to them, it focuses on changing societies and politics in East Asia, particularly on shifting notions of citizenship, nationhood, and peoplehood. The contributions feature new and timely conclusions drawn from multidisciplinary fields including law, public policy, sociology, Asian studies, gender, sexuality, and ethnic studies and include direct testimonies from citizens of East and Southeast Asia.Globalization and Civil Society in East Asian Space will appeal to students and scholars of sociology, political science, and Asian studies more broadly.

アジアの軍隊の進化-アジアにおける軍民関係
Chong, Alan / Jenne, Nicole (eds.),
Asian Military Evolutions: Civil-Military Relations in Asia. 320 pp. 2023 (Bristol U. Pr., UK) <687-652>
ISBN 978-1-5292-2931-8 hard ¥25,641.- (税込) GB£ 90.00 *
This book explores civil-military relations in Asia. With chapters on individual countries in the region, it provides a comprehensive account of the range of contemporary Asian practices under conditions of abridged democracy, soft authoritarianism or complete totalitarianism. Through its analysis, the book argues that civil-military relations in Asia ought to be examined under the concept of 'Asian military evolutions'. It demonstrates that while Asian militaries have tried to incorporate standard, Western-derived frameworks of civil-military relations, it has been necessary to adapt such frameworks to suit local circumstances. The book reveals how this has in turn led to creative fusions and novel changes in making civil-military relations an asset to furthering national security objectives.

Kim, Hyungkee,
The East Asian Model: Transformation and Sustainability. (Routledge Contemporary Asia Series) 248 pp. 2023:2 (Routledge, UK) <687-672>
ISBN 978-1-03-236576-3 hard ¥35,612.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *
Hyungkee Kim analyses the model of East Asian development as it existed during periods of high growth and how it was transformed by pressures from both the Washington consensus and its own internal contradictions. Many have discussed the successes and failures of the East Asian model, but Kim is concerned rather with the story of its transformation, and its long-term sustainability. He uses a Five Sector Model, which focuses on the, state, corporate, financial, labour, and foreign sectors to identify the core of East Asian model and examine the variants in Korea, Japan and China. He also outlines the distinctions between the East Asian model and Western development models including the Anglo-American, Rhine, and Nordic models. He analyses in detail the institutional changes such as marketization, privatization, liberalization, and flexibilization that have transformed the East Asian model. Highlighting the major problems that emerged from the transformation of the East Asian model, Kim assesses its prospects for economic, social and ecological sustainability and proposes an agenda for institutional reforms. An essential reading for scholars of East Asian political economy.

T.W.リム編 ポストCOVID-19アジアにおいてアジアの将来を作り上げる
Lim, Tai Wei (ed.),
Crafting Asian Future in the Post-COOIVD-19 Asia. 180 pp. 2022:12 (World Scientific, SI) <687-674>
ISBN 978-981-12-5372-0 hard ¥16,816.- (税込) US$ 78.00 *
Not too long ago, the world was busy crafting a global future with unmitigated globalization and the relentless march of Industry 4.0. A black swan event then happened. An outbreak of COVID-19 coronavirus surged worldwide and resulted in a global pandemic that devastated economies, eliminated the weak/infirmed/elderly/young, and then targeted the general population. It destroyed small and medium-sized enterprises and hastened the demise of sunset industries, resulting in record numbers of bankruptcies. Instead of succumbing to the despair of a worldwide cataclysmic event, a group of Asian scholars from multiple disciplines got together. This group of scholars put their different specializations to use and adopted an on-site, viewpoint perspective of how the pandemic affected their lives and also the lives of the communities in their studies to contribute to this volume. The volume is interdisciplinary by nature and a product of exceptional contributions from a multidisciplinary panel of scholars, ranging from anthropologists, sociologists, historians to economists. The interdisciplinary approach employed here allows one to look at and understand subject matter critically - COVID-19 and its recovery - not just through diverse analytical frameworks but also through broader, historical variations as well as technologies studies. There is no existing literature equivalent to this subject matter given the ongoing pandemic as it unfolds simultaneously across regions and even continents while exerting differential impacts on various sectors such as agriculture, religion, technology, etc. With the advantage of its interdisciplinary approaches examined in differing geographical locations in Asia, the volume makes a scholarly contribution to analyzing the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak and the coping mechanisms adopted by humankind in various capacities to mitigate it.

Italians in Africa and the Japanese in South East Asia: Stark Differences and Surprising Similarities in the Age of Expansion. 450 S. 2022:9 (de Gruyter, GW) <687-675>
ISBN 978-3-11-075772-9 hard ¥20,467.- (税込) EUR 86.95 *
A comparative, transnational study between the early Italian and the early Japanese colonialism is without precedent. These two phenomena, influential as they are, have yet to attract the thorough attention of the international scientific community, let alone be the focus of a comparative study. This book presents a qualitative, comparative, interdisciplinary research based on the interpretation and analysis of historical events, encompassing these social-economic-cultural-psychosocial parameters that influenced profoundly the evolution of the developments in question. This original undertaking can offer a complete examination of the phenomenon of colonialism since it examines the issue from two different angles. The results of the study interpreted with objectivity and scientific methodology will shed light on and will contribute to the understanding of Italy's and Japan's historical development at least until the First World War.

Reimagining Civil Society Collaborations in Development: Starting from the South. (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies) 336 pp. 2023:2 (Routledge, UK) * paper 2023 <687-127>
ISBN 978-1-03-214767-3 hard ¥35,612.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *
ISBN 978-1-03-214775-8 paper ¥10,253.- (税込) GB£ 35.99 *
At a time when uneven power dynamics are high on development actors' agenda, this book will be an important contribution to researchers and practitioners working on innovation in development and civil society. While there is much discussion of localization, decolonization and 'shifting power' in civil society collaborations in development, the debate thus far centers on the aid system. This book directs attention to CSOs as drivers of development in various contexts that we refer to as the Global South. This book take a transformative stance, reimagining roles, relations and processes. It does so from five complementary angles: (1) Southern CSOs reclaiming the lead, 2) displacement of the North-South dyad, (3) Southern-centred questions, (4) new roles for Northern actors, and (5) new starting points for collaboration. The book relativizes international collaboration, asking INGOs, Northern CSOs, and their donors to follow Southern CSOs' leads, recognizing their contextually geared perspectives, agendas, resources, capacities, and ways of working. Based in 19 empirically grounded chapters, the book also offers an agenda for further research, design, and experimentation.Emphasizing the need to 'Start from the South' this book thus re-imagines and re-centers Civil Society collaborations in development, offering Southern-centred ways of understanding and developing relations, roles, and processes, in theory and practice. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license. Das Oel und der Kampf um eine Neue Weltwirtschaftsordnung: Die Bedeutung der Oelkrisen der 1970er Jahre fuer die Nord-Sued-Beziehungen. (Studien zur Internationalen Geschichte 53) 380 S. 2022:5 (de Gruyter Oldenbourg, GW) <687-225>
ISBN 978-3-11-076970-8 hard ¥14,111.- (税込) EUR 59.95 *

The Brandt Commission and the Multinationals: Planetary Perspectives. (Routledge Studies in Modern European History) 448 pp. 2023:1 (Routledge, UK) <687-229>
ISBN 978-1-03-233233-8 hard ¥35,612.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *
Set against the backdrop of dramatic world order transformations across the 1970s and 1980s, this book examines the competing planetary perspectives of the Brandt Commission and the multinationals, arguing that the missed opportunities of these decades created a path for contemporary political and economic crises. At the Global South's request for a New International Economic Order, the Brandt Commission, chaired by Willy Brandt, was appointed in 1977. The commission, with a goal to formulate arguments on how to close the gap between the North and South, developed a planetary perspective grounded in economic redistribution, ecological considerations, and disarmament. The multinationals, at that time, a new kind of business corporation, repressed Brandt's vision by seeking freedom from political monitoring. This book discusses the ways that global corporations created facts that changed the world and the preconditions of politics. It moves beyond existing research that considers the competition merely a theoretical clash between Keynesianism and neoliberalism.Featuring a thorough analysis of the decades' trends and a new interview with Shridath Ramphal, the Commission's unofficial vice chair, this is a timely volume for students and researchers of international relations, political science, and contemporary history.
