上海協力機構と紛争の緩和
MacHaffie, James, The Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Conflict De-escalation: Trust Building and Interstate Rivalries. (Asian Security Studies) 200 pp. 2023:3 (Routledge, UK) <690-778>
ISBN 978-1-03-240445-5 hard ¥36,025.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *

This book's main objective is to determine the role, if any, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) plays in de-escalating tensions among its members. It argues that the SCO is uniquely suited to keep its disparate members, many of whom have border disputes with each other, from escalating tensions among themselves. The book proposes a rivalry de-escalation model that differs from the standard belief that rivalries de-escalate due to a shock or external pressure. This model states that trust can be built between two rival states when confidence-building measures are instilled and utilized repeatedly over a long period of time. The SCO provides these mechanisms in the form of annual summits between state leaders and routine military exercises involving military units from every member. Examining three case studies involving the founding six members of the organization, the book argues that the SCO is effective in keeping rivalries de-escalated among its members. This book will be of much interest to students of Asian politics, regional security, and international relations.

Gupta, Devyani / Hossain, Purba (eds.), Across Colonial Lines: Commodities, Networks and Empire Building. (Empire's Other Histories) 272 pp. 2023:2 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <690-795>
ISBN 978-1-350-32702-3 hard ¥24,497.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *

This collection takes a multi-perspective approach in the study of empire and commodities beyond temporal and spatial boundaries. From early modern Venetian trade to tea in the Eurasian world, the role of gold in Portuguese imperial ambitions and British sailors as traders, Across Colonial Lines uses commodity networks as a lens to study empire and the links between them. Offering a comparative understanding of the movement of commodities across the British, French, Dutch, Portuguese and Venetian empires, it demonstrates the impact of commodity production, consumption and movement on colonial and post-colonial societies. It further explores the nexus between the local and the global to consider the role played by individual producers, petty traders, sailors and the consumer in creating regional circulations and a wider global political economy. Re-examining 'commodities' and highlighting the interwoven character of multiple commodity networks to explain both the trade and fiscal aspects of imperialism alongside its ideology, governance and knowledge production, each chapter takes an individual commodity to illuminate the history of commodity transmission within trans-imperial contexts. They show how these networks shaped traditions of knowledge production, social organisation, political control and even impetus to globalisation from as early as the 13th century.

蔭木達也、楊佳嘉編 日本帝国下のアジアにおける女性
Kageki, Tatsuya / Yang, Jiajia (eds.), Women in Asia under the Japanese Empire. (Routledge Studies in the Modern History of Asia 177) 256 pp. 2023 (Routledge, UK) <690-796>
ISBN 978-1-03-224762-5 hard ¥36,025.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *

Contributors to this book provide an Asian women's history from the perspective of gender analysis, assessing Japanese imperial policy and propaganda in its colonies and occupied territories and particularly its impact on women.Tackling topics including media, travel, migration, literature, and the perceptions of the empire by the colonized, the authors present an eclectic history, unified by the perspective of gender studies and the spatial and political lens of the Japanese Empire. They look at the lives of women in,Taiwan, Korea, Manchuria, Mainland China, Micronesia, and Okinawa, among others. These women were wives, mothers, writers, migrants, intellectuals and activists, and thus had a very broad range of views and experiences of Imperial Japan. Where women have tended in the past to be studied as objects of the imperial system, the contributors to this book study them as the subject of history, while also providing an outside-in perspective on the Japanese Empire by other Asians.A vital new perspective for scholars of twentieth-century history of East Asian countries and regions.

Leeb, Leopold, One Dragon, Two Doves: A Comparative History of the Catholic Church in China and in Vietnam. (Studies in Theology, Society and Culture 16) 338 pp. 2022:10 (P. Lang, SZ) <690-166>
ISBN 978-1-80079-796-3 paper ¥15,276.- (税込) SFR 62.00

This comparative study of the history of the Catholic Church in China and Vietnam from the seventeenth to the twentieth century opens up new perspectives for the understanding of the presence of Christianity in Asia. The author narrates the biographies of a number of outstanding missionaries and Christians from China and Vietnam and tries to understand them in their respective historical backgrounds by applying the principle of mutual illumination: the experience of China may help to understand the Vietnamese reality and vice versa. In this way some interesting similarities between European missionaries and local Christians are revealed. At the same time the parallel biographies from China and Vietnam throw a light on the peculiar cultural and political contexts of Christianity in the two nations. The book, based on recent research in several languages, is a pioneering attempt at writing comparative ecclesiastical history in Asia and offers an insightful synopsis, occasionally even including observations on Japan and Korea. The study presents new questions and fields for further research, including native church leadership, Christian architecture, arts, and literature, and common theological vocabularies. The work discloses hitherto unnoticed spiritual links between China and Vietnam.
