パレスチナ、台湾、西サハラ-国家性、主権、国際システム
Abidde, Sabella Ogbobode (ed.), Palestine, Taiwan, and Western Sahara: Statehood, Sovereignty, and the International System. 304 pp. 2023:7 (Lexington Books, US) <704-799>
ISBN 978-1-66693-200-3 hard ¥23,716.- (税込) US$ 110.00 *

To have a State, four distinct conditions must be met. First, there must be a community of people, and it matters not whether they belong to the same color, faith, or ethnicity. Second, there must be a geographical space, a settlement that this community of people calls a home. Third, there must be governing authority. And finally, the government must be sovereign - sovereign in the sense that it is self-governing and independent of any domestic or international body. Palestine, Taiwan, and Western Sahara have met all the forestated conditions -- except for broad international support and recognition and membership of the United Nations. However, this has not been the case with Palestine, Taiwan, and Western Sahara. This edited volume examines some of the endogenous and exogenous factors that have contributed to the ambiguous and contested nature of these political entities and argued that the undermined nature of these entities contributes to regional instability and global insecurity. And finally, the continued denial of statehood is a violation of their collective human rights.

Amaral, Diego / Obute, Dumebi (eds.), Mediascapes of Ruined Geographies in the Global South. 315 pp. 2023:8 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <704-800>
ISBN 978-3-031-31589-3 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99

This book undertakes an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural interrogation of the Global South through the prisms of media and cultural studies. It closely explores the quotidian (re)territorialization, and brazen ruination of the material geographies of this vast expanse of the world by forces and proxies of (neo)colonialism and global capitalism of resource extraction. We cite the ongoing expulsion of Palestinians from their homelands by occupational forces, the emerging detritus dump across Mexico City and Lagos, the infrastructural precariousness of the favelas of Brazil, the unending resource-war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the flagrant operation of the oil industry in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria as examples of this geographic cataclysm. The centripetal forces of neo-colonialism and resource extraction at full-flight in the Global South, aided by toxic hegemonic forces, have overtly tossed some of the population to the peripheries of existence and the society at large. As such, this book, additionally, explores the resistance of the subalterns from the margins to this socio-political malaise, and further unmasks the knowledge production from these margins of the Global South. This project is divided into five (5) parts of three essays each. The first part examines the territorial contestation in the Middle East framed and expressed through films and literary lenses. The second part examines the environmental burden of modern consumerism and urbanization on metropolis across Mexico, Brazil, and Nigeria, while the third part explores the attritional violence of resource extraction in the DRC, Brazil, and Nigeria via filmic and journalistic lenses. The fourth part offers a swift response from the margins through ethnographic and journalistic interrogation of the subjectivity of the subalterns of Brazilian favelas, and street artists. The fifth part offers an engaging critique of the political climates of South Africa and Brazil that reinforce the environmental catastrophe of the regions of the world.?

Bondarenko, Dmitri M., Post-Colonial Nations in Historical and Cultural Context. 354 pp. 2023:7 (Lexington Books, US) <704-801>
ISBN 978-1-66694-046-6 hard ¥25,872.- (税込) US$ 120.00 *

Using historical and anthropological analysis, in Post-colonial Nations in Historical and Cultural Context, Dmitri M. Bondarenko examines nation-building in Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. He examines the nation and state as concepts and how these are changing globally, particularly in regard to the idea that the fundamental characteristic of a nation is a culturally homogeneous community. This feature became a cornerstone of the concept of the nation at its formation in the West by the end of the eighteenth century, but post-colonial migration flows from the Global South to the Global North are increasing multi-culturalism in the North. In contrast, liberated states of Asia and Africa have been multi-cultural from earlier on as they inherited the colonial borders in which typically many peoples were united. Throughout the book, Bondarenko argues that this history of multi-culturalism is an advantage to development in the Global South and that it's necessary to depart from the classical, Western concept of the nation to simultaneously support citizen unity while preserving cultural diversity.

Long before the arrival of Western emissaries and powers, East Asian peoples and states were deeply involved in world affairs. In this sweeping account, Warren I. Cohen explores four millennia of international relations from the vantage points of China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia.Writing incisively and authoritatively for readers at all levels, Cohen paints a broad but revealing portrait of East Asia's place in the world. He defines the region's boundaries widely, looking beyond China, Japan, and Korea to include Southeast Asia, and extends the scope of international relations to consider the vital role of cultural and economic exchanges. Cohen examines the system of Chinese domination in the ancient world, the exchanges between East Asia and the Islamic world, Chinese sea voyages to Arabia and East Africa, and the emergence of a European-defined international system. He chronicles the new imperialism of the 1890s, the ascendancy of Japan, the trials of World War II, the drama of the Cold War, and the transformations of East Asian states toward the close of the twentieth century. By showing that East Asia has often been preeminent on the world stage, this book not only recasts the past but also adds crucial historical perspective on international politics today. This second edition of East Asia at the Center features new material on the first decades of the twenty-first century.

Gil-Riano, Sebastian, The Remnants of Race Science: UNESCO and Economic Development in the Global South. (Race, Inequality, and Health 7) 368 pp. 2023:8 (Columbia U. Pr., US) <704-803>
ISBN 978-0-231-19434-1 hard ¥30,184.- (税込) US$ 140.00
ISBN 978-0-231-19435-8 paper ¥7,546.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *

After World War II, UNESCO launched an ambitious international campaign against race prejudice. Casting racism as a problem of ignorance, it sought to reduce prejudice by spreading the latest scientific knowledge about human diversity to instill "mutual understanding" between groups of people. This campaign has often been understood as a response led by British and U.S. scientists to the extreme ideas that informed Nazi Germany. Yet many of its key figures were social scientists either raised in or closely involved with South America and the South Pacific. The Remnants of Race Science traces the influence of ideas from the Global South on UNESCO's race campaign, illuminating its relationship to notions of modernization and economic development. Sebastian Gil-Riano examines the campaign participants' involvement in some of the most ambitious development projects of the postwar period. In challenging race prejudice, these experts drew on ideas about race that emphasized plasticity and mutability, in contrast to the fixed categories of scientific racism. Gil-Riano argues that these same ideas legitimated projects of economic development and social integration aimed at bringing ostensibly "backward" indigenous and non-European peoples into the modern world. He also shows how these experts' promotion of studies of race relations inadvertently spurred a deeper reckoning with the structural and imperial sources of racism as well as the aftermath of the transatlantic slave trade.Shedding new light on the postwar refashioning of ideas about race, this book reveals how internationalist efforts to dismantle racism paved the way for postcolonial modernization projects.

Hashimoto, Satoru, Afterlives of Letters: The Transnational Origins of Modern Literature in China, Japan, and Korea. (Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University) 408 pp. 2023:9 (Columbia U. Pr., US) <704-804>
ISBN 978-0-231-21152-9 hard ¥30,184.- (税込) US$ 140.00 *
ISBN 978-0-231-21153-6 paper ¥7,546.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *

When East Asia opened itself to the world in the nineteenth century, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean intellectuals had shared notions of literature because of the centuries-long cultural exchanges in the region. As modernization profoundly destabilized cultural norms, they ventured to create new literature for the new era.Satoru Hashimoto offers a novel way of understanding the origins of modern literature in a transregional context, drawing on Chinese-, Japanese-, and Korean-language texts in both classical and vernacular forms. He argues that modern literature came into being in East Asia through writerly attempts at reconstructing the present's historical relationship to the past across the cultural transformations caused by modernization. Hashimoto examines writers' anachronistic engagement with past cultures deemed obsolete or antithetical to new systems of values, showing that this transnational process was integral to the emergence of modern literature.A groundbreaking cross-cultural excavation of the origins of modern literature in East Asia featuring remarkable linguistic scope, Afterlives of Letters bridges Asian studies and comparative literature and delivers a remapping of world literature.

Salawu, Abiodun / Bright Molale, Tshepang et al. (eds.), Indigenous Language for Social Change Communication in the Global South. (Communication, Globalization, and Cultural Identity) 298 pp. 2023:6 (Lexington Books, US) <704-805>
ISBN 978-1-66691-204-3 hard ¥23,716.- (税込) US$ 110.00 *

Indigenous Language for Social Change Communication in the Global South brings together voices from the margins to engage in dialogue about common social change issues in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. This book argues that resistance and social movements, expressed in music and songs and exchanged via radio, remain fundamental to ensure that the linguistic and cultural diversity of the world progresses despite colonizing pressures. Contributors present cases that explore how indigenous communities use mediums such as the radio to help support their language, identity, and expand their own social change. Highlighting the centrality of music in the development of political discussions and language as a central part of collective identity, contributors analyze how these mediums function as both a vessel and a link for information and cultural cohesion of those engaging in social change. Scholars of communication, sociology, and development studies will find this book of particular interest.

Terbish, Baasanjav, Sex in the Land of Genghis Khan: From the Times of the Great Conqueror to Today. 184 pp. 2023:4 (Lexington Books, US) <704-806>
ISBN 978-1-66693-749-7 hard ¥20,482.- (税込) US$ 95.00 *

This book examines the history of sexuality in Mongolia over the last 800 years. As a culture-specific and time-specific system of values, practices and identities, sexuality in Mongolia, as elsewhere, has been subject to change as Mongolian society transformed from an empire to a post-imperial regional power to a Qing colony to a socialist country, before embracing liberal democracy in the 1990s. Since every social change tends to become reflected in sexuality, this study takes into account a range of intertwined topics, including religious ideologies, political ideologies, law, gender and relationships between individuals and the state, all of which have evolved throughout Mongolia's history and require rethinking if one is to describe such a complex social phenomenon as human sexuality.
