Warren, Adam / Rodriguez, Julia E. / Casper, S. T. (eds.), Empire, Colonialism, and the Human Sciences: Troubling Encounters in the Americas and Pacific. 408 pp. 2024:8 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <721-72>
ISBN 978-1-00-939813-8 hard ¥28,820.- (税込) GB£ 100.00

In this bold reconsideration of the human sciences, an interdisciplinary team employ an expanded theoretical and geographical critical lens centring the notion of the encounter. Drawing insights from Indigenous and Latin American studies, nine case studies delve into the dynamics of encounters between researchers, intermediaries, and research subjects in imperial and colonial contexts across the Americas and Pacific. Essays explore ethical considerations and knowledge production practices that prevailed in field and expedition science, custodial institutions, and governance debates. They re-evaluate how individuals and communities subjected to research projects embraced, critiqued, or subverted them. Often, research subjects expressed their own aspirations, asserted sovereignty or autonomy, and exercised forms of power through interactions or acts of refusal. This volume signals the transformative potential of Indigenous studies and Latin American studies for shaping future scholarship on the history of the human sciences. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

地政学とインド・太平洋地域 第2版
Kapur, Ashok, Geopolitics and the Indo-Pacific Region. 2nd ed. 224 pp. 2024:8 (Routledge, UK) <721-645>
ISBN 978-1-03-270970-3 hard ¥37,466.- (税込) GB£ 130.00
ISBN 978-1-03-270968-0 paper ¥10,371.- (税込) GB£ 35.99

Exploring geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific region, a major hub of global, economic, commercial, military, diplomatic, and cultural activities in the 21st century, this textbook provides students with an introduction to the existing debates, frameworks, and issues surrounding the Indo=Pacific. The second edition has been revised, updated, and expanded to explain the major buildup of deterrence hubs during 2022-23 in the Indo-Pacific Region. The hubs have a clear focus on North Asia (Japan and South Korea), the Taiwan Strait and Taiwan, and the South China Sea (Philippines, Vietnam, and Australia), India and the Indian Ocean littoral areas (the Persian Gulf and the Bay of Bengal). This edition takes into account the effects of the Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Hamas/Iran proxies' conflicts on the buildup of Russia-China-North Korea-Iran ties and the naval projections by China and Russia in North Pacific, off the Alaska coast, and in relation to Myanmar and Bangladesh and the Gulf/Red Sea areas. Within the purview of maritime security and NATO, the present century is critical with the introduction of missiles and nuclear submarine technology into IPR and by the fragmentation of arms control and nuclear and missile non-proliferation arrangements of the 1960s-2000 period. This volume predicts that China's oft proclaimed rise to global hegemonic status is not inevitable because of its many economic-social problems and foreign policy dilemmas. Nor is World War III inevitable because no one seeks unlimited warfare but the regions in conflict will likely remain on a low boil. However, problem-solving and crisis- resolution will remain a problematic, keeping the 21st century at its toes, due to the inability of regional powers to unite for the common good. Complete with a list of further reading, Geopolitics and the Indo-Pacific Region fills a gap in the market and will be of great interest to upper-year level undergraduates, post graduate students and researchers studying international relations, IPR geopolitics, Asian politics, and Asian security studies.

アジアのアジア化
Kyung-Sup, Chang / Taekyoon, Kim / Joonkoo, Lee (eds.), Asianization of Asia. (Routledge Contemporary Asia Series) 248 pp. 2024:6 (Routledge, UK) <721-680>
ISBN 978-1-03-222780-1 hard ¥38,907.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This book explores the Asianization of contemporary Asia, a trend that through neoliberal economic globalism has diluted the political effect of the EuroAmerican-dictated segmentation of Asia and instead facilitated and accelerated socioeconomic exchanges and collaborations among Asian nations themselves. It comprehensively analyzes and interprets Asia's Asianization in terms of intensification of intra-Asian interactions and flows in industrial, educational, sociopolitical and ecological spheres. Through such explorations, the book successfully reveals that Asia's Asianization is particularly reflected in the major dimensions of regional industrial integration, transnational class relations, labor market regionalization, international educational mobility, regionalization of media and pop culture, transnational social movements and activisms, regionalized social governance for development cooperation and developmental mobilization of diasporic socioeconomic resources. In particular, as an interdisciplinary study of Asia's industrial, social and cultural integration within and across Asian societies in both outbound and inbound directions, this book will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Asian politics, development and sociology.

島津直子他編 冷戦期のアジア-グローバルな外交のビジュアル・ヒストリー
Phillips, Matthew / Shimazu, Naoko (eds.), Cold War Asia: A Visual History of Global Diplomacy. 249 pp. 2024:8 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <721-681>
ISBN 978-1-00-937961-8 hard ¥24,497.- (税込) GB£ 85.00

This innovative, interdisciplinary and international collection of essays offers fresh perspectives on the history of global diplomacy. Experts in history, international relations, art history and performance art have come together to examine a series of visual sources relating to Asia's role in global diplomacy during the Cold War. They explore how leaders, including Indonesia's Sukarno, the Philippines' Imelda Marcos and Thailand's King Bhumibol, exploited the symbolic value of diplomacy to emphasise their agency in relationships with Great Powers. These case studies demonstrate the significance of Asian diplomacy in understanding the Cold War, shifting away from the use of 'war' as the dominant criterion for analysis of the region. Cold War Asia sheds critical light onto how culture shapes international relations, widening the lens of analysis to embed the role of gender, religion, and ethnicity, as well as the material world, into our understanding of diplomacy.

Alami, Ilias / Dixon, Adam D., The Spectre of State Capitalism. (Critical Frontiers of Theory, Research, and Policy in International Development Studies) 336 pp. 2024:7 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <721-147>
ISBN 978-0-19-892519-4 hard ¥25,938.- (税込) GB£ 90.00

The state is back, and it means business. Since the turn of the 21st century, state-owned enterprises, sovereign funds, and policy banks have vastly expanded their control over assets and markets. Concurrently, governments have experimented with increasingly assertive modalities of statism, from techno-industrial policies and spatial development strategies to economic nationalism and trade and investment restrictions. This book argues that we are currently witnessing a historic arc in the trajectories of state intervention, characterized by a drastic reconfiguration of the state's role as promoter, supervisor, shareholder-investor, and direct owner of capital across the world economy. It offers a comprehensive analysis of this "new state capitalism", as commentators increasingly refer to it, and maps out its key empirical manifestations across a range of geographies, cases, and issue areas. Alami and Dixon show that the new state capitalism is rooted in deep geopolitical economic and financial processes pertaining to the secular development of global capitalism, as much as it is the product of the geoeconomic agency of states and the global corporate strategies of leading firms. The book demonstrates that the proliferation of muscular modalities of statist interventionism and the increasing concentration of capital in the hands of states indicate foundational shifts in global capitalism. This includes a growing fusion of private and state capital, and the development of flexible and liquid forms of property that collapse the distinction between state and private ownership, control, and management. This has fundamental implications for the nature and operations of global capitalism and world politics. This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read on the Oxford Academic platform and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations.

Herrmann-Pillath, Carsten / Zhao, Qian (eds.), East Asian Ethical Life and Socio-Economic Transformation in the Twenty-First Century: The Ethical Sources of the Entrepreneurial Renewal of Companies and Communities. (Routledge Studies in the Growth Economies of Asia) 320 pp. 2024:6 (Routledge, UK) <721-154>
ISBN 978-1-03-248498-3 hard ¥38,907.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This book considers ethical culture in East Asia, examines the impact it has had on economic and social transformation, and explores what effect it might have on solving current problems. It views the ethical culture of East Asia, that is, the beliefs, values, and practices that define East Asian societies' conceptions of ethics in everyday life, as different from what pertains in the West, with more emphasis in East Asia on respect for ancestors, concern about propriety of behaviour, and notions of community. The book discusses how these particular East Asian values are being applied, for example, in family businesses, and how they might further be applied to solve current crucial challenges for humanity, such as climate change, ageing, and persistent inequality, challenges that are not being solved by an exclusive focus on economic growth alone. The book includes a consideration of ethical innovation, for example, distinct forms of ecological ethics enshrined in newly emerging economic organizations, such as social entrepreneurship.
