グローバル・サウスにおける台頭する国家の外交戦略 第2版
Braveboy-Wagner, Jacqueline (ed.),
Diplomatic Strategies of Rising Nations in the Global South: The Search for Leadership and Influence. 2nd ed. 476 pp. 2024:7 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <726-849>
ISBN 978-3-031-52628-2 hard ¥21,182.- (税込) EUR 89.99
At a time of change in the international system, this book examines how non-traditional leading nations from the Global South have fared to date and what the chances are of their rise to continue. In the second decade of the twenty-first century, the enthusiasm of observers of the international scene about the "rise of the rest" is waning as many countries that were expected to lead the evolving multipolar order are experiencing economic contraction and governance problems. In order to predict further developments, the contributors to this volume focus on the types and sources of the diplomatic strategies that must be executed by rising states if they are to preserve domestic advances as well as gain influence regionally and internationally. Through a comprehensive examination of case studies from Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, they show that while there are commonalities among these rising states, unique domestic conditions, values, and traditions impact and predictdiplomatic strategizing and the ability for sustained projection on the international scene.

政治的暴力-発展途上世界における植民地化、民主主義、紛争
Doces, John A.,
Political Violence: Colonization, Democracy, and Conflict in the Developing World. (New Horizons in International Relations) 208 pp. 2024:11 (E. Elgar, UK) <726-850>
ISBN 978-1-0353-2317-3 hard ¥24,216.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *
Examining the role of elections and top-down democracy promotion in Africa, this book focuses on how and why electoral contests are associated with division and violence. It considers whether the Western political model has failed developing countries, in what ways, and how this has affected people's lives.Providing historical analyses of colonization, liberalism, and democracy, John A. Doces challenges the prevailing notions of liberal democracy and instead identifies its promotion as a form of political control and the latest manifestation of the colonial endeavor. Utilizing original data from 11 African case studies, the book finds that non-Western countries do not have the foundations to support competitive processes like democratic elections, which are associated with spikes in violence and fear. Adopting a comparative approach, Doces concludes that imposing Western liberal democracy upon developing societies inflicts harm that persists over time, limiting rather than promoting prosperity. This topical book is invaluable for students and scholars of international relations, political science and public policy, security studies, democracy, regulation and governance, and development studies. Its empirical research will also be of use to policymakers and advisors working in developing countries.

大東敬典著 砂糖とインド洋世界-18世紀ペルシア湾における交易と消費
Daito, Norifumi,
Sugar and the Indian Ocean World: Trade and Consumption in the Eighteenth-Century Persian Gulf. 248 pp. 2024:8 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <726-898>
ISBN 978-1-350-39921-1 hard ¥24,216.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *
Tracing the history of the sugar trade and its consumption in the Persian Gulf during the 18th century, this book explores the interplay of social, economic and political interests created by this popular commodity. The study of sugar has, until now, focused mainly on its significant growth in European markets from the mid-17th century and, more recently, parallel developments in East Asia. In this book, Daito shows how the sugar trade also developed in, and became important to, the Indian Ocean World. Studying how the consumption of sugar wavered after the brutal overthrow of the Safavid dynasty in 1722, this book shows how the Dutch East India Company and the trading network responded to political upheavals in the region and, consequently, the changing trading conditions. Arguing that sugar continued to be imported and consumed despite these political disturbances, Sugar and the Indian Ocean World proves this was not a period of economic stagnation for the region, and shows how sugar became an important intersection between socio-cultural practices and the Indian Ocean economy.

Lightfoot, Dale,
Qanat: Stream of Wells. 880 pp. 2024:9 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <726-905>
ISBN 978-1-83860-217-8 hard ¥28,490.- (税込) GB£ 100.00 *
Qanats are ubiquitous, yet unseen, and a clever way to create streams where none exist in nature. For 3,000 years, they have made life possible in impossible places and still sustain life and livelihoods in many countries today. After 30 years of field research, Dale Lightfoot provides the first comprehensive study of the qanat and sheds new light on their unique locations and distribution, their origins and history, their ecology, current status and use. Qanats are remarkably engineered underground aqueducts, using gravity to bring water to villages and towns where reliable flowing surface water is scarce or absent. Although an ancient technology, more than 46,000 of them still flow around the world today, with their sustainable nature making them a focus of renewed interest.Richly illustrated with images and a series of original maps, this is the most complete record to date of the locations and distribution of qanats worldwide, including examples from the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, Central Asia, China, India, Mexico and South America.

Oil and Gas Pipeline Infrastructure Insecurity: Vandalism, Threats, and Conflicts in the Niger Delta and the Global South. (New Security Challenges) 409 pp. 2024:5 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <726-319>
ISBN 978-3-031-56931-9 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book offers a comprehensive analysis of infrastructure insecurity issues in the historic Niger Delta, drawing on empirical fieldwork involving host communities, regulators, and multinational oil and gas operators. It introduces innovative models and theories, such as a pipeline life cycle model focusing on community development, community neglect aggression displacement theory, social aggression theory, stakeholders' policy development model, contemporary poor governance cycle model, and an infrastructure insecurity nexus model, linking governance, socio-economic conditions, and infrastructure insecurity in resource-rich regions of the Global South. The book bridges gaps left by previous publications, providing depth and applicability of data. It employs the Frustration- Aggression Displacement theory to explain underlying triggers of violence and uses real-world case studies, diagrams, and charts to facilitate understanding. Suitable and engaging for individuals, communities, or regulators involved in oil and gas activities alike, this book offers valuable insights into onshore pipeline infrastructure insecurity in Nigeria, West Africa, and the broader Global South, addressing regulation, compliance, environmental concerns, social aspects, and technological innovations.

Lee, Soocheol / Zhang, Shiqiu / Hong, Jong Ho / Nabangchang-Srisawalak, Orapan / Akao, Ken-Ichi et al. (eds.),
Energy Transitions and Climate Change Issues in Asia. 270 pp. 2024:7 (Springer, GW) <726-320>
ISBN 978-981-9717-72-9 hard ¥37,660.- (税込) EUR 159.99
The rapid pace of economic development and urbanization in Asia have led to several major problems such as greenhouse gas emissions, mass consumption, and depletion of natural resources. These problems pose a major threat to a sustainable future for Asia and are hindering many Asian countries' goal of becoming carbon-neutral by the middle of this century. Solving these problems requires a comprehensive understanding of the nature of energy consumption, exploitation of natural resources, and deterioration of the environment. To accelerate the green energy transition and promote efficient resource use in Asia, a range of policy options and joint efforts among Asian countries will be required, including carbon pricing, resource tax reform, the expansion of transition finance, support for the development of low-carbon, and resource-efficient social infrastructure. However, Asia is home to many countries, each in a different stage of economic development and with its own culture and customs. Practical implementation of these policies will require bringing together researchers, policymakers, and citizens to share their knowledge and engage in discussions to generate policy ideas that are appropriate for each country. The purpose of this book is to share theoretical and empirical knowledge and convey policy implications that can be expected to accelerate energy transition and resource use effectiveness toward a sustainable future in Asia.
