Amrith, Sunil,
The Burning Earth: A History. 416 pp. 2024:9 (Norton, US) <724-767>
ISBN 978-1-324-00718-0 hard ¥7,546.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *
In this magisterial book, historian Sunil Amrith twins the stories of environment and Empire, of genocide and eco-cide, of an extraordinary expansion of human freedom and its planetary costs. Drawing on an extraordinarily rich diversity of primary sources, he reckons with the ruins of Portuguese silver mining in Peru, British gold mining in South Africa, and oil extraction in Central Asia. He explores the railroads and highways that brought humans to new terrains of battle against each other and against stubborn nature. Amrith's account of the ways in which the First and Second World Wars involved the massive mobilization not only of men, but of other natural resources from around the globe, provides an essential new way of understanding war as an irreversible reshaping of the planet. So too does this book reveal the reality of migration as consequence of environmental harm. The imperial, globe-spanning pursuit of profit, joined with new forms of energy and new possibilities of freedom from hunger and discomfort, freedom to move and explore, has brought change to every inch of the Earth. Amrith relates in gorgeous prose, and on the largest canvas, a mind-altering epic-vibrant with stories, characters, and vivid images-in which humanity might find the collective wisdom to save itself.

Beyond the 2026 Winter Olympic Games: Sustainable Scenarios for the Valtellina Mountain Region. (Mega Event Planning) 161 pp. 2024:6 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <724-768>
ISBN 978-981-9980-91-8 hard ¥9,412.- (税込) EUR 39.99
This volume offers a novel study of the Milan-Cortina's Winter Olympics 2026, with a focus on the mountainous region of Valtellina. It brings an up-to-date analysis of the complex interactions between mega-events and remote areas, both in terms of potentials for regeneration and risks for further segregation. Remote areas are traditionally characterized by socio-economic and spatial disparities. On the one hand, they benefit from attractive features, such as environmental and landscape resources, food and wine production, and energy production. On the other, they are by definition fragile environments, disrupted by the contradictions of international tourism, climate change, limited infrastructures and services, rural abandonment, and demographic decline. This book offers credible solutions for the sustainable development of mountainous regions as a legacy of Winter Olympics. It is an essential resource for scholars, professionals, and policy-makers in the fieldsof urban planning and design, architecture design, geography, sociology, and economics.

Carton, Wim / Malm, Andreas,
Overshoot: How the World Surrendered to Climate Breakdown. 416 pp. 2024:10 (Verso, UK) <724-771>
ISBN 978-1-80429-398-0 hard ¥7,122.- (税込) GB£ 25.00 *
The world is on the cusp of one and a half degrees of warming - just the rise it has committed itself to avoiding. Heat at such levels would be intolerable. Even before one and a half, seasons of climate disaster have struck with ever more devastating force, and yet a notion has taken hold that the cause is now lost: the intolerable has become unavoidable. The limit will be overshot - perhaps two degrees as well - and the best we can do is cool down the Earth at some later point, towards the end of the century, by means of technologies not yet proven. How did this happen? How could the idea of overshoot gain such traction? What forces are driving us into a climate that people - particularly poor people in the global South - won't be able to cope with? In Overshoot: How the World Surrendered to Climate Breakdown, Andreas Malm and Wim Carton present a history of the present phase of the crisis, likely to extend decades into the future, as the fossil fuel industry swims in the largest profits ever made. Money continues to flow into the construction of pipelines, platforms, terminals, mines - assets that will have to be destroyed for the planet to remain liveable. Too much heat has become officially acceptable because such revolutionary destruction is not. But should the rest of us abide by that priority?Unflinchingly critical of business-as-usual and the calls for surrender to it, sweeping in scope, stirring and sobering, Overshoot lays out the stakes for the climate struggle in the years ahead.

The Green Ages: Medieval Innovations in Sustainability. 352 pp. 2024:8 (Profile Books, UK) <724-776>
ISBN 978-1-80081-625-1 hard ¥7,122.- (税込) GB£ 25.00 *
WINNER OF THE 2021 NDR BOOK PRIZE IN GERMANY 'A must-read' Lyndal Roper, Regius Professor of History at Oriel College, Oxford Fishing quotas on Lake Constance. Common lands in the UK. The medieval answer to Depop in the middle of Frankfurt. These are all just some of the sustainability initiatives from the Middle Ages that Annette Kehnel illuminates in her astounding new book, The Green Ages. From the mythical-sounding City of Ladies and their garden economy to early microcredit banks and rent-a-cow schemes, Kehnel uncovers a world at odds with what we might think of as the typical medieval existence. Pre-modern history is full of inspiring examples and concepts that open up new horizons. And we urgently need them as today's challenges - finite resources, the twilight of consumerism, growing inequality - threaten what we have come to think of as a modern way of living sustainably. This is a revelatory look at the past that has the power to change our future.

Zeng, Weizhong / Yang, Fan,
Poverty Alleviation Via Forest Carbon Sequestration: Theory, Empirical Evidence, and Policy Implications. (International Research on Poverty Reduction) 330 pp. 2024:4 (Springer, GW) <724-278>
ISBN 978-981-9981-90-8 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book focuses on two issues: the creation of benefits and opportunities for the poverty-stricken people and the trade-off between FCS and poverty alleviation. At the theoretical level, it explains the essential characteristics of PAFCS, analyses the impact mechanism of FCS projects in poverty alleviation, clarifies the stakeholders and their interests and demands, and delineates the dynamic mechanism of FCS projects and poverty alleviation. Based on this theoretical framework, the current situation and challenges for PAFCS in southwest China's ethnic areas are examined in depth. Project performance was quantitatively measured both for projects themselves and for community farmers. The research emphasises that FCS projects in poverty-stricken areas are not the same as PAFCS, highlights the combination of poverty alleviation theory and ecological compensation theory, and considers PAFCS as an intersection of poverty research and ecological compensation research. Additionally, theresearch suggested that FCS projects are not general poverty alleviation projects, highlights the need for full respect to be granted to the subjective will and value judgement of farmers, including poverty-stricken farmers, takes the lead in focusing on the win-win goal of combating climate change and reducing poverty, and makes a breakthrough in researching some key issues that need to be solved in the practice of PAFCS in the ethnic areas of Southwest China. This book is helpful for global scholars in the field of sustainable development, anti-poverty and forest carbon sequestration, government officials, and organisations in developing countries concerned with agricultural development, forestry economy, and sustainable development, as well as all the people around the world who want to find innovative solutions in the climate negotiations.

Climate Governance and Corporate Eco-innovation: A Framework for Sustainable Companies. (Sustainable Finance) 383 pp. 2024:6 (Springer, GW) <724-340>
ISBN 978-3-031-56422-2 hard ¥37,660.- (税込) EUR 159.99
Corporations are increasingly dedicated to implementing more robust climate change practices in an era characterized by natural resource constraints, socio-environmental challenges, and mounting climate change pressures. This book provides a timely exploration of theoretical and empirical perspectives on global climate governance and corporate eco-innovation activities. It illustrates how corporations are actively addressing climate change by enhancing their climate governance systems and integrating eco-innovation into their operations, significantly impacting financial decision-making, policies, performance, risk management, and other crucial indicators. In this context, eco-innovation represents a corporation's ability to reduce environmental costs and burdens for its customers. It plays a vital role in helping firms improve energy and environmental efficiency, mitigate energy consumption, reduce carbon emissions, and minimize ecological harm during and after production. Additionally, eco-innovation can create new market opportunities by enhancing existing environmental technologies. Furthermore, the shift from conventional corporate governance to a heightened focus on corporate climate governance mechanisms, such as the establishment of ecological committees, the implementation of cli-mate incentives for managers and executives, and the publication of sustainability or climate change reports, proves to be an effective strategy for motivating firms to become more dedicated to environmental protection and eco-innovation initiatives.

Ure, John,
Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Late or Too Late? 2024:10 (Emerald, UK) <724-175>
ISBN 978-1-83549-407-3 paper ¥9,055.- (税込) US$ 42.00 *
In the decade since the UN SDG agenda was established, how much progress have we really made? What can we be doing to ensure that we're on the right track? Is it too late to meet the 2030 Agenda? Written by John Ure, an economist and academic turned consultant for UN agencies such as the World Bank, the IFC, the ITU, UNDP, UNESCAP, and more, Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is an accessible contemporary account of a fast-developing field of literature, evidence, and science around the SDG challenges. Dividing the SDGs into four core themes - poverty, environment, civil society, and global partnerships - Ure delves into the current status of each, identifying the main challenges to be overcome and examining what we can be doing to get there. With policy implications and practical guidelines for building momentum both at an individual and collective level, Ure provides a balanced yet a definitive and compelling assessment of the SDGs. Cutting through the huge volume of literature for each of the SDGs as 2030 closes in, this immensely readable primer makes sense of the state of play for some of the most pressing existential questions of our time. It calls on policymakers, business professionals, educators, NGOs, media professionals, and the public to reevaluate policies and their role in the sustainable development agenda.

De Vidovich, Lorenzo,
Eco-Welfare and the Energy Transition: Themes and Debates for an Emerging Interplay. 151 pp. 2024:4 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <724-232>
ISBN 978-3-031-55027-0 hard ¥9,412.- (税込) EUR 39.99
?This book provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging interplay that runs between energy - seen as a basic need and a providential material service from the viewpoint of welfare studies - and eco-welfare, seen as an emerging analytical and policy paradigm that hold together the social crisis on the one hand, and the ecological crisis, on the other hand. At a time of energy transition, the interplay between the theoretical framework of eco-welfare and the topic of energy supply is little explored, and therefore, this book fills a need in the literature by providing a comprehensive framework to navigate this emerging relationship. Such a framework is strengthened by insights on energy poverty and renewable energy communities, identified as cornerstones of the analysis between energy transition and eco-welfare.
