The Sustainability Conundrum: Balancing Energy Transition and Global Development investigates how a clean environment and mitigation of Global Climate Change will affect the UN's sustainability goals for development, poverty elimination, and inequality reduction. It covers the necessity of energy use for humans, the global demand and the supply of energy, and the environmental challenges of energy consumption.
Outlining the interconnections between four of the UN goals, the book discusses the Global Climate Change problem by explaining how the scientific community eradicated other global environmental threats, such as acid rain, lead contamination, and the ozone hole. It establishes the uniqueness of Global Climate Change; evaluates proposed methods and "roadmaps" to achieve meaningful carbon dioxide emissions reductions; computes the cost of the necessary infrastructure for their implementation on a regional and a global scale; and draws conclusions about the implementation of the proposed energy transition and the sustainability goals for the elimination of poverty and reduction of inequalities within and among nations.
This book is intended for students of sustainability initiatives and any readers interested in the ongoing challenges surrounding sustainability and global economic development.

Defending Animals, Disappointing People offers a ground-breaking exploration of what happens when caring deeply about animals places us in conflict with the people we love.
Drawing on care ethics and relational philosophy, Karen S. Emmerman develops relational vegan ecofeminism, a framework that takes animals' moral standing seriously while also acknowledging the emotional, cultural, and familial stakes woven into human traditions. Rather than treating veganism as a simple matter of ethical prioritization, Emmerman shows that refusing a grandmother's lovingly prepared chicken soup, or rejecting a family hunting tradition, carries profound relational weight. These moments produce "moral remainders" of lingering hurt, regret, or estrangement that persists even when we make the best ethical choice.
Through richly contextual analysis, Emmerman argues that ethical life requires more than clear principles: it requires relational moral attention, a practice of empathy, repair, curiosity, and mutual recognition. Balancing philosophical rigor with narrative warmth, the book illuminates the tensions, grief, and possibilities at the heart of living ethically in a speciesist world. Defending Animals, Disappointing People sets out a hopeful yet honest path for navigating both inter-animal and intra-cultural conflicts - one that neither abandons animals nor dismisses the humans with whom we form our deepest connections.

This book charts the evolution of animal history from 1800 to the present day, and is an essential companion for students navigating the methodological practices of the field.
Organised by theme, Writing Animal History takes readers through a variety of approaches to animal-human interactions, against the backdrop of key historiographical questions: such as agency, acculturation, and power hierarchies. With chapters on wilderness and civilisation, industrialised animals, and animals in science and technology - discussion moves from the origins of the field, to the evolving place of animals in society, and then to the future of animal history.
Schoenfelder analyses a wealth of case studies in each chapter, highlighting to students how a variety of sources, theories, and methods can be employed when writing and reflecting on animal histories. The author's use of practical examples not only demonstrates the dynamic nature of the field, and its wide geographical applications, but encourages students to approach and develop their own research questions and ideas.
Writing Animal History is a key touchstone for students learning about the practice of animal history, and is an essential tool for analysing and developing historiographical writing.

A wide-ranging exploration of a variety of viewpoints on nature and the environment that draws on philosophical traditions around the world.
This open access collection explores the variety of ways we can relate to nature and the environment. It gives voice to perspectives often overlooked in mainstream approaches and calls for a new way of thinking about environmental challenges.
For centuries European traditions have dominated how we see the world, approaching it in terms of isolation, passiveness, and survival. This collection shows the value of taking a more inclusive approach and makes a timely and much-needed contribution to environmental philosophy in the 21st century.
A team of international contributors illustrate the richness of our connection with nature. They cover 19th and early 20th-century Japanese environmental philosophy centered around the figure of Tanaka Shozo; the Indian and African knowledge system; posthumanism and Oromo environmental ethics. By discussing how the relationship between humans and other forms of life is characterized in different cultures, they offer an holistic view of nature, emphasizing interconnectedness, agency and cooperation.

The book provides a practical, step-by-step guide to help policymakers formulate comprehensive mitigation strategies tailored to their domestic circumstances.
The core of the volume is a discussion of all the key elements of the mitigation strategy using conceptual frameworks for understanding policy options and design issues as well as numerous quantitative analyses illustrating the effects of different measures across different countries. The discussion within chapters is broken down into a series of key questions, many of which routinely come up in discussions with country authorities and in international fora. Each question contains a concise response and, in many cases, a graphic illustrating the key points. Chapters start with a summary of main messages and end with suggestions for further reading.
The main target audience for the book is technical staff in finance, environment, and energy ministries grappling with national climate mitigation policy issues. However, the volume will also be a useful reference for individuals in international organizations, research institutes, and universities involved in climate policy analysis, as well as negotiating parties at international climate fora.

This book provides an introductory overview on SDG two on Zero Hunger and associated complexities and challenges in context of the Global South. It reviews the transition from MDGs to SDGs - specifically Zero Hunger and presents a comprehensive picture on where the Global South stands today and how global developments such as the Covid-19 pandemic and conflict affect this positioning. More importantly, this book critically reflects on the indicator-based framework of SDG two, from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. While eradicating hunger unquestionably needs to be at the top of policy agenda, it is also important to parallelly engage in critical reflection so that this agenda is translated locally.
This volume highlights three omissions from Zero Hunger framework - urbanization of hunger, centrality of structural determinants and group inequality, which are defeating for the 2030 agenda for 'leaving no one behind'.
Topical and rich in primary and secondary data, this book is a must read for students of sustainable development, development studies, environment and sustainability, public policy, and professionals working in development sectors, aid organisations, and NGOs.

Challenging the pursuit of sustainable lifestyles as a matter of technical inventiveness or individual action, this Handbook proposes that sustainability is instead a systemic process that reorients prevailing ambitions and creates conditions for societal flourishing. Expert contributing authors countermand the widespread assumption that achieving a more environmentally sustainable and socially equitable future relies mostly on developing more efficient technologies. They offer alternatives to the relentless focus on achieving these objectives by governments and businesses over the past several decades, which has often been driven by an unyielding commitment to economic growth rather than socioenvironmental concern.
The Handbook of Research on Sustainable Lifestyles is an authoritative resource for scholars and students of environmental studies, politics and public policy, sustainable development, human geography, and sociology. Policymakers in innovation and technology and business leaders will also benefit from its practical approach to effectively incorporating sustainability strategies into everyday life.

Religious and Indigenous practices that counter despair, cultivate courage, and sustain moral action in the fight for environmental justice. Climate change is an ecological and political crisis, but it is also a spiritual one. Fractured relationships with the natural systems that sustain us and frustration with leaders' seeming inability to respond, has led many to grief, despair, burnout, and moral exhaustion. Indeed, current research on eco-anxiety and climate grief show that emotional overwhelm undermines collective action, even when solutions are known and available.
But there is a path forward, one found within religious and Indigenous traditions that have long cultivated practices for living with loss, sustaining hope, and acting ethically within fragile ecosystems. By bringing the psychology of climate grief into conversation with Indigenous and religious traditions, this book offers a framework for moving beyond paralysis toward resilient, justice-centered engagement. Each chapter draws on case studies from diverse Indigenous and religious traditions. challenging extractive worldviews, emphasizing relationality and interdependence, and grounding justice in care for land, community, and future generations. Together, they explore what it means to engage in inner activism: the work of moral courage, clarity, and presence that makes sustained ecological action possible. Practices of mindfulness, ritual, lament, storytelling, and community accountability are presented not as private coping strategies but as sources of collective resilience and ethical commitment. Emphasizing hope without denial and action without burnout, this book offers spiritual resources for transforming grief into courage, solidarity, and sustained engagement for ecological justice.

AI-Enabled Learning for Climate Action brings together scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and innovators to examine how digital learning systems, data platforms, and emerging technologies-including artificial intelligence, digital twins, and immersive tools-can accelerate climate literacy, support green skills and jobs, strengthen institutional decision-making, and enable collective action. Rather than treating digital learning as a delivery mechanism alone, the contributors demonstrate how learning systems function as critical climate infrastructure by building the human and institutional capacities needed for adaptation, mitigation, and long-term resilience.
The chapters span global, regional, and local contexts, with examples from low-, middle-, and high-income countries. They explore how AI-enabled and digital learning approaches can enhance climate awareness and behavior change; equip youth and professionals with future-ready and green skills; support evidence-based policymaking; and enable experiential, problem-based learning grounded in real-world data. Contributors also examine how technology-enabled learning can advance climate justice, strengthen governance, and promote transparency, public participation, and accountability.
Blending conceptual frameworks with applied case studies, this volume offers both the what and the how of designing inclusive, scalable, and action-oriented climate learning ecosystems. It is intended for educators, policymakers, development practitioners, and institutions seeking practical guidance on how AI-enabled learning can help bridge the gap between climate knowledge, skills for the future of work, and meaningful action.

Rather than treating resilience as a uniform paradigm, Brdulak explores its plurality, demonstrating how diverse pathways strengthen urban resilience in context-specific situations. Chapters draw on rich qualitative research to illustrate how different cultures of governance shape the ways urban green spaces are designed, managed and used. By applying management theory to urban governance, this book adopts a novel perspective on organising cross-sector collaboration for greener, fairer and more adaptable urban futures.
Accessible and illuminating, Managing Urban Green Spaces for Resilience is an excellent resource for scholars and students of urban environmental governance, planning and public management. City managers and public policymakers will likewise benefit from its practical and strategic approach to supporting green transformation.

This book explores the complex relationship between climate change and human behaviour, which is often shaped by cognitive biases, established norms, past experiences, and a tendency toward maintaining the status quo-making meaningful change challenging. It brings together a diverse range of contributions that examine international and industry contexts through the lens of behavioural economics, addressing persistent intention-action gap.
The book is divided into three parts. Part I introduces the theoretical foundations and traces the evolution of scientific thought from classical rationality to bounded rationality and ethicality in the context of climate change. It includes a systematic bibliometric mapping of global research trends and examines the crucial role of information flows, media literacy, and disinformation in shaping climate attitudes. Part II focuses on climate change mitigation, presenting empirical studies on energy transitions, fossil fuel "addiction," and circular economy interventions specifically targeting the consumption patterns of adolescents and young adults. Part III addresses spatial and community adaptation, exploring mobility patterns, nature-based solutions in European cities, and the management of private green spaces. It concludes with global perspectives on climate migration narratives and the collective resilience of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
By offering a comprehensive and interdisciplinary look at human behaviour in the face of climate change, the book integrates advanced methods such as discrete choice experiments, social network analysis, and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) which inspires further research and action in this ever-evolving field. It is essential reading for academics, researchers, students, as well as economists, environmentalists and policymakers concerned with the economic and psychological dimensions of climate-related decision-making.

As environmental conditions continue to deteriorate, ecological and environmental damage compensation and restoration have become priorities on China's policy agenda. This book offers accessible, comprehensive, and critical insights into Chinese environmental law from theoretical, legal, empirical, and comparative perspectives.
It examines the theoretical concept of ecological and environmental damage and outlines the legislative and policy framework governing remediation liability in China. The author explores the role of NGOs in China's environmental public interest litigation (EPIL) system, the role of the procuratorate in China's environmental governance, and the state-initiated ecological and environmental damage compensation litigation (EEDCL) regime. By mapping the overlaps and conflicts that arise among various actors and mechanisms, the book highlights the interactions, tensions, and potential synergies within China's pluralistic regime for addressing ecological and environmental damage. Finally, it synthetically assesses the regime's achievements, limitations, and future trajectories.
This book will appeal to scholars, policymakers, and legal practitioners working in the fields of Chinese environmental law and governance, liability for environmental damage, and environmental litigation.

This book showcases how marine reserves, when implemented and protected effectively, could simultaneously achieve conservation and reef fishery goals.
Marine reserves, permanent spatial closures to fishing, are often viewed as detrimental to fisheries, reducing the area available for fishing and concentrating effort into smaller areas. But what if these reserves could supplement reef fisheries? Drawing on over forty years of research and teaching experience, the author explores the concept of net export-where reserves produce such abundant fish biomass that they spill over into fished areas, partly compensating for the loss of fishing grounds. The book delves into recent advancements in larval tagging and tracking, showcasing studies from the Great Barrier Reef, Papua New Guinea, and beyond, to demonstrate how recruitment subsidy, net export of fish larvae from reserves to fished areas, combined with reductions in fishery effort outside reserves when reserves are implemented, can lead to sustainable reef fisheries alongside conservation. The book argues that with the right balance between conservation and catch, marine reserves can achieve a "win-win" scenario, ensuring both healthy fish populations and sustainable reef fisheries. This book calls for conservation and fisheries to co-ordinate, not confront, in order to simultaneously achieve their objectives.
Written in clear and accessible language, this book is essential reading for marine conservation and fisheries professionals and policymakers, as well as students and scholars of marine science and conservation.

For millennia nature has provided spiritual experiences of wonder, gratitude, and peace. Now nature is being burned, poisoned, and rendered extinct. This book asks: Can nature still provide spiritual inspiration?
Drawing on decades of original work in environmental ethics, religious environmentalism, contemporary spirituality, and fiction, Roger S. Gottlieb explores how ecological crisis reshapes spiritual life. What we trusted would nourish us and our descendants forever is diminished and threatened. We seek a refuge from the cruelties and madness of human culture and find bird species disappearing and oceans filling with plastic.
Gottlieb begins by clarifying what spirituality is and why nature has played a central role in it for religious believers and non-believers alike. He then examines the environmental crisis as a civilizational rupture that transforms hope, grief, meaning, and moral responsibility.
Nature spirituality, he suggests, must adapt to ecological loss and vulnerability. Difficult as it may be, we can nourish a spirituality in which grief coexists with gratitude, compassion with moral outrage, and acceptance with active solidarity and love for all of life.
The book concludes with a fictional narrative illustrating how each of us might face overwhelming environmental realities with a transformed spiritual vision.

Environmental politics is clearly at an impasse, increasingly foreclosed by a fragmenting elite consensus on climate change, an escalating populist backlash on the right, and a pervasive sense of climate doom on the left. This book considers what new openings might be offered by a labor-centered transition focused on our creative agency and our collective capacities to design new worlds.
Whilst political mobilizations and smart policy are vital for making progress on decarbonization, Designing the Just Transition suggests that a more environmentally and socially just future will also have to be materialized and built, coded and created, imagined, desired, and enacted by many hands, many skills and many forms of visible and invisible design labor. The mainstream design industry is not to be trusted. Nevertheless, this book brings political ecology and environmental-labor studies into dialogue with critical design praxis, activism, and scholarship. It critically appraises traditions of worker-centered design, ecological and regional planning, sustainable and climate-smart architecture, and 'design when everyone designs.'
Rather than embracing a scolding green politics of limits or techno-utopian propaganda, Designing the Just Transition points to a wealth of resources for thinking about how we still might engage in democratic world-making on a warmer, more restless, and more turbulent planet.

Timely and innovative, this book sets out an agenda for academic research into energy landscapes, a field of growing global importance as the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources accelerates. It explores how energy infrastructure has and is transforming landscapes, emphasizing that energy landscapes are social, cultural, and political phenomena shaped by human values, power relations and perceptions.
Addressing important conceptual issues and methodological developments, the authors propose creative ways to investigate key themes from landscape assessment and visualisation to novel approaches in landscape design to accommodate renewables. Drawing on a global range of case studies, the book sets out the argument that understanding energy landscapes requires interdisciplinary approaches that address conflicts, justice, design and lived experiences to support a more equitable and effective energy transition.
A Research Agenda for Energy Landscapes will greatly benefit scholars and students in environmental studies, human geography, anthropology, sociology, landscape architecture and planning. Its practical suggestions will also be valuable to policymakers in energy management, as well as energy specialists looking to deepen their knowledge of the field.

This book explores blueish geographies: new ways of thinking with 'wet' space through a porous and open conceptualisation. Through critical ocean thinking, more-than-wet ontologies, blue humanities, blue economy and planning, the diverse chapters think the blueish as extension, relation and representation of water, extending the field and questioning its absences.
The book offers an original and interdisciplinary contribution to critical ocean and marine studies by expanding the 'disciplines' vocabularies, debates, possibilities, epistemologies and methodologies. By bringing together diverse critical perspectives on wet spaces, politics and their excess, this book provides new conceptual and methodological tools for understanding temporalities and counter-archives, more-than-human ecologies and possible future plannings. Combining established and early-career scholars from different disciplines and regions, the volume advances current debates in critical geography and ocean studies while remaining accessible for teaching and other applied purposes.
Blueish Entanglements and Transformations is intended for scholars, researchers and students in the field of critical ocean geographies, more-than-human geographies, maritime studies, hydrosocial studies, blue humanities, blue economy, political ecology and related water-related disciplines. It should also appeal to non-research readers working on water related policies, development and planning.

Contemporary Catholic environmentalism is at a crossroads, both theologically and politically. While the first half of the 20th century saw only fleeting references to environmental concerns in papal encyclicals, Pope John Paul II's 1990 New Year's Day address, later titled The Ecological Crisis, marked a pivotal shift. His stark warnings about the planet's mounting ecological challenges galvanized the Catholic theological community, prompting numerous regional bishops' statements that highlighted pressing local environmental issues. By the mid-1990s, Catholic environmentalism had evolved into a distinct theological discourse and a burgeoning political movement, attracting support from both church hierarchy and lay Catholics worldwide.
Despite Pope John Paul II's efforts to root Catholic environmental thought in the stewardship paradigm, his success in securing theological consensus was limited. While Pope Benedict XVI endorsed this model, many Catholic theologians and scholars voiced significant reservations. Some critiqued its vague theological underpinnings, others lamented its inherent anthropocentrism, and still others sought a broader scriptural foundation for environmental ethics. These critiques signaled a growing desire for an alternative framework.
With the publication of Laudato Si in 2015, Pope Francis ushered in a new era of Catholic environmentalism. His encyclical reaffirmed the theological and moral urgency of ecological issues while challenging humanity's unchecked technological optimism and deep-seated anthropocentrism. At the heart of his vision is the idea that all creation manifests divine love, calling Catholics to embrace a theocentric environmental ethic. This book builds upon Laudato Si, offering a fresh theological framework that moves beyond stewardship toward a more expansive, love-centered approach to creation care.

Bridging international and business law, contributors explore how gaps in accountability are enabled through fragmented corporate groups, transnational value chains and territorially bounded legal doctrines. Encompassing a range of jurisdictions from around the world, the Research Handbook provides novel insights on corporate power in globalized business, the role of finance and accounting and the use of contracts for sustainability in global value chains. Chapters move beyond the disruptive use of courts to consider a number of regulatory possibilities, highlighting the potential for change despite deeply entrenched unethical practices.
Proposing regulatory interventions to enable, promote or mandate corporate accountability, the Research Handbook on Sustainability and Corporate Accountability is essential reading for scholars and students of law, political science, economics and business management. Industry practitioners will also benefit from its guidance on rapidly evolving regulatory developments in changing times.
