Yang, Shangguang / Wang, Danyang, Urban Migration and Public Governance in China: A Case Study of Shanghai. (Public Economy and Urban Governance in China) 219 pp. 2023:8 (Springer, GW) <710-698>
ISBN 978-981-9940-51-6 hard ¥25,890.- (税込) EUR 109.99

This book, focusing on urban migration and public governance, reviews on the concepts and theories of urban migration and urban governance across the globe and sums up world migration trends and policy changes, coupled with the characteristics and types of China's urban migration. What differs this book from other books is that it probes into the main factors and mechanisms influencing urban migration and inclusion, and that it adopts Shanghai as a sample and capitalizes on Shanghai's urban migration data to verify the subjective and objective reasons affecting urban migrants' inclusion. Moreover, this book takes a further step to conduct a theoretical reflection from the perspectives of population migration and migration policies and explores current dilemmas facing China in terms of urban migration management and possible ways to make a difference. In the final part, this book puts forward some theory-based and practicable countermeasures to transform urban migration governance in China.

Hogan, Thor, Closing the Urban-Rural Power Divide: Envisioning a United City-States of America. 252 pp. 2023:10 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <710-706>
ISBN 978-3-031-34062-8 hard ¥28,244.- (税込) EUR 119.99

This book proposes a radical reorganization of political and electoral power to address the current political imbalance between urban and rural populations in the United States. Hogan argues that, despite being smaller in population, a "financialist-ruralist coalition" has effectively used the Constitution-especially equal representation in the Senate-to create an anti-urban "vetocracy." This political imbalance protects the interests of the financial elite and rural cultural conservatives, while effectively blocking urban interests, particularly regarding the adoption of a broad range of structural reforms and progressive policy preferences. By re-dividing many of the largest federated states into smaller city-states, the book posits, the United States would reduce the ability of non-urban interests to control the Senate. This would allow an empowered urbanite alliance to pass the forward-looking legislation the nation needs to remain internationally competitive in the coming decades.

Li, Bin, Resilient Governance of Urban Redevelopment: State, Market and Communities in China Since 1990. (SpringerBriefs in Geography) 77 pp. 2023:7 (Springer, GW) <710-808>
ISBN 978-981-9929-27-6 paper ¥7,058.- (税込) EUR 29.99

To examine the origins, characteristics, and outcomes of resilient governance with Chinese characteristics, this open access book takes Guangzhou, a typical Chinese city from 1990 to 2015, as an example. Through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and the collection of secondary data, this book finds that (1) the institutional context can be described as an authoritarian land-oriented pro-growth regime; (2) there are three phases with different patterns of governance: the Primitive Market Phase (1990-1998), the Pure Government Phase (1998-2006) and the Multiple Players Phase (2006-2015); (3) redevelopment can serve as a model of resilient governance because it changes in time in a dynamic environment to maximise economic growth; (4) an authoritarian land-oriented pro-growth regime is the key to support such a resilient governance model. This is an open access book.

ISBN 978-981-9952-91-5 hard ¥28,244.- (税込) EUR 119.99

This book examines the impact of population growth and urbanization on the household registration system in China. Drawing on experiences from other countries in population management, it proposes a general framework for reforming the household registration system in China. This framework is based on the principle of "equity of rights and obligations" and includes a points system to guide implementation. The book also analyzes the economic implications of optimizing restrictions on urban household registration and the fiscal reforms associated with the reform. The practicality of the points system program is further verified.

Ikeda, Sanford, A City Cannot Be a Work of Art: Learning Economics and Social Theory From Jane Jacobs. 402 pp. 2023:10 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <710-959>
ISBN 978-981-9953-61-5 hard ¥11,766.- (税込) EUR 49.99
ISBN 978-981-9953-64-6 paper ¥9,412.- (税込) EUR 39.99

This open access book connects Jane Jacobs's celebrated urban analysis to her ideas on economics and social theory. While Jacobs is a legend in the field of urbanism and famous for challenging and profoundly influencing urban planning and design, her theoretical contributions - although central to her criticisms of and proposals for public policy - are frequently overlooked even by her most enthusiastic admirers. This book argues that Jacobs's insight that "a city cannot be a work of art" underlies both her ideas on planning and her understanding of economic development and social cooperation. It shows how the theory of the market process and Jacobs's theory of urban processes are useful complements - an example of what economists and urbanists can learn from each other. This Jacobs-cum-market-process perspective offers new theoretical, historical, and policy analyses of cities, more realistic and coherent than standard accounts by either economists or urbanists.

Zheng, Zen Tong Chunhua / Zou, Yali, The Significance of Chinatown Development to a Multicultural America: An Exploration of the Houston Chinatowns. (Emerald Points) 228 pp. 2023:12 (Emerald, UK) <710-970>
ISBN 978-1-80455-377-0 hard ¥12,936.- (税込) US$ 60.00 *

The Houston Chinatown's dramatic transformation from a Chinese enclave decades ago to a continually expanding multiethnic boomtown today contrasts development stagnation in many other traditional American Chinatowns. This pioneer study delineates the evolution of Houston's two Chinatowns, from the emergence and decline of Old Chinatown to the subsequent development and vibrant growth of New Chinatown - spanning nearly a century. Zheng and Zou delve into the distinctive character of New Chinatown, underscoring its innovative progress that sets it apart from the nation's oldest major Chinatowns, a quintessentially Houston story. They also probe the immigrant experience, political landscape, and socioeconomic dynamics that influenced the Chinatowns' metamorphoses. Scanning the community's collective response to the dire impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on New Chinatown, the chapters examine the latest development trends in the New Chinatown areas, shedding light on the extent to which they are upholding, or deviating from, traditional practices. Furthermore, the book explores the significance of these trends to the local community and beyond, alongside their wider implications. Amidst the growth challenges encountered by numerous Chinatowns across America, this timely work offers insightful perspectives on a sustainable model for urban and community development, as demonstrated by the transformative journey of Houston's New Chinatown.

Pavoni, Andrea / Tulumello, Simone, Urban Violence: Security, Imaginary, Atmosphere. 430 pp. 2023:9 (Lexington Books, US) <710-566>
ISBN 978-1-79363-730-7 hard ¥29,106.- (税込) US$ 135.00 *

Urban violence still has a peculiar standing within social and urban research. This book works to unpack the link between urban, violence, and security with three main arguments. The first is that urban violence is under-theorized because long-term theoretical problems with both of its elements ('urban' and 'violence').The second is to answer these questions: (1) how can violence be conceptualized in a way that opens to an understanding of the specificity of urban violence? (2) What is the urban in urban violence? And (3) How can 'urban' and 'violence' be articulated in a way that makes urban violence a category with both analytical and strategic power? The third, and central, argument of this book is that, through a genealogy that articulates political economic and vital materialism, urban violence can ultimately be framed as a precise category shaped by three interlocking trajectories: the process of (capitalist) urbanization, the spatio-political project of the urban, and the concrete urban atmospheres in and through which the process and the project materialize, often violently so, in the urban.

Li, Jiachen, Multi-dimensional Collaborative Governance of Urban Sharing Platforms. (Public Economy and Urban Governance in China) 182 pp. 2023:9 (Springer, GW) <710-257>
ISBN 978-981-9939-73-2 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book gives a brief review of current development models and governance of urban sharing platforms, and looks into the economic efficiency of a novel market transaction model of sharing economy, which has been accelerated by high-density urban population and the Internet technology. With an aim to solve current problems featuring excessive competition, waste of resources, security risks, and unfair competition, this book delves into the two governance models in accommodation sharing platforms and bike and car sharing platforms and puts forward a multi-dimensional collaborative governance model that involves the participation of enterprises, the government, and the community. Under such a model, the platforms may utilize their own key technologies to implement supervision and solicit feedback; the government may resort to tax regulation and reallocating shared space to mitigate the negative externality effect and promote fair competition; and the community, as the basic unit of a city, may play its part through on-site participation and real-time feedback.

Quintana Vigiola, Gabriela, Place, Catholicism and Violence: The Construction of Place in Caracas' Barrios. 197 pp. 2023:11 (Springer, GW) <710-143>
ISBN 978-981-9946-88-4 hard ¥25,890.- (税込) EUR 109.99

This book explores the interwoven nature of place, Catholicism and violence in Caracas' barrios. Using interdisciplinary perspectives to investigate themes of urban space, meaning as a psychosocial construct, criminal violence, and religiosity as culture, this book uncovers the underlying complexities of turning spaces into places through the built form, activities in the urban space and the meanings associated with it. Fundamental elements in the construction of place are used to understand the ways in which barrio residents conceive and construct the physicality of the private, public and religious spaces; how residents use the physical spaces of the barrios; and the psychosocial meanings residents associate with the spaces and activities. Using rich qualitative data and a case study design, the book relies on audio-visual data and interviews with organisers, residents and key participants in Petare, the largest barrio conglomeration in Caracas and Venezuela. Qualitative thematic analysis of participants' experiences of Catholicism, violence and, ultimately, the construction of place exposes a unique argument: that meaningful urban spaces are embedded with emotions, memories, relationships, experiences and meanings, which turn them into places.
