Tehran's Borderlines: Urban Development and Public Life in Contemporary Iran. 178 pp. 2024:6 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <731-886>
ISBN 978-1-00-938905-1 hard ¥24,216.- (税込) GB£ 85.00
Tehran has changed in recent decades. Rapid urban development through the expansion of subway lines, highways, bridges, and tunnels, and the emergence of new public spaces have drastically reshaped the physical spaces of Tehran. As the city changes, so do its citizens, their social relations, and their individual and collective perceptions of urban life, class, and culture. Tehran's Borderlines is about the social relations that are interrupted, facilitated, forged, and transformed through processes of urban development. Focusing on the use of public spaces, this book provides an analysis of urban social relations in the context of broader economic, cultural, and political forces. The book offers a narrative of how public spaces function as manifestations of complex relations among citizens of different backgrounds, between citizens and the state, and between forces that shape the physical realities of spaces and the conceptual meanings that citizens create and assign to them.

Reimagining Urban Planning in Africa. 516 pp. 2023:12 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <731-898>
ISBN 978-1-009-38946-4 hard ¥34,188.- (税込) GB£ 120.00 *
This book analyses urban planning in Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone Africa, exploring its history and advocating for new approaches. In a climate changing world, cities need to be reimagined and designed to be more sustainable. But despite being one of the fastest urbanising continents, Africa has generally weak urban planning systems. The chapters adopt multi-disciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches, combining insights from urban studies and policy sciences, emphasising existing gaps, particularly in decision-making, planning practice and inclusiveness, to offer an in-depth analysis of urban planning in Africa. The authors advocate for the reimagination of urban planning, debating new institutionalism, digital infrastructure, climate urbanism, gated communities, and smart mobility. The chapters provide both theoretical and practical contributions, and advance thinking, policymaking, and implementation of sustainable urban planning approaches in Africa, thus making the book indispensable for advanced students, researchers, and practitioners alike.

Self-Sufficiency and Sustainable Cities and Regions: Planning for Sustainable, Circular and Carbon-Neutral Development. (Regions and Cities) 196 pp. 2024:11 (Routledge, UK) <731-940>
ISBN 978-1-032-80710-2 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
The concept of self-sufficiency involves the notion of sustainable, circular, and carbon-neutral cities. This book examines how urban planning can lead to greater self-sufficiency.It sheds light on how urban and regional circular and self-sufficiency development can effectively contribute towards the ultimate goals of the United Nations (UN) Agenda 2030 and the European Union (EU) Green Deal. It not only embraces the scientific fields of regional and urban studies but also addresses environmental sustainability-related and regional resilience aspects, such as renewable energy production, sustainable mobility, and the circular economy. This book offers a full toolkit of knowledge on how to effectively implement planning approaches for circular and self-sufficiency development at both urban and regional levels. It begins by presenting a theoretical framework and debate on urban and regional planning approaches that can effectively make cities and regions circular and self-sufficient in certain development domains, such as producing intra-city electric energy, sustainable mobility, and promoting a circular economy. Further, it advances a range of policy development proposals aiming at providing a comprehensive introduction to contemporary thinking about how cities and regions can design innovative planning and governance processes and, where appropriate, build capacity to implement systemic and integrated climate-neutral policies, building on existing place-based territorial capital and experiences developed by local and regional networks. The chapters are written by established authors in their respective domains. This book will thoroughly prepare students and provide knowledge to academics, researchers, and policymakers in the fields of urban and regional planning/development and studies, environmental sustainability, regional resilience, human geography, economic development, and public/EU/UN policies.

Radical Adaptation: Transforming Cities for a Climate Changed World. 166 pp. 2024:1 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <731-947>
ISBN 978-1-009-21117-8 hard ¥19,943.- (税込) GB£ 70.00 *
ISBN 978-1-009-21115-4 paper ¥8,543.- (税込) GB£ 29.99 *
This book considers the everyday conduits through which climate instability is revealing itself: the storm sewer drain on your street, the powerlines transporting your electricity, the mix of vegetation in your backyard or neighborhood park - these are the pathways through which climate change is most likely to impact your life. For many, these are the last places we expect it to. The first book to establish a framework for climate change adaptation, Stone's aim is to understand how climate change is altering our lives in the present period - this period of transition between the ancient, stable climate of our ancestors and the unfolding, no longer stable climate of our children - and how our cities might adapt to these changes. Stone's concern is with the risks posed by a new environmental regime for which our modes of living are ill-adapted, and with how these modes of living must be altered - radically altered - to persist in a climate changed world.

In the scholarship of urbanism, small towns are overlooked and understudied. Rebuilding the American Town highlights how smaller municipalities are transforming to serve their communities and meet the future. The book uncovers creative planning and design strategies of nine U.S. towns as they rebuild to remain vibrant, equitable and viable in the face of metropolitan sprawl, population shifts, political division, economic shortfalls and climate change. Rebuilding the American Town includes interviews and insights from those directly involved, to reveal the challenges and advantages of being a smaller city while highlighting the power of design at local levels. The book provides a new lens for contemporary urbanism more broadly as it shifts thinking away from large-metro concerns, toward novel, tactical strategies that advance the quality of life for residents through design and policies that are scaled to the populations and places they serve. The projects in this book show how the small town in the United States is unexpectedly progressive, experimental, urban and global.

Social Capital for a Child-Friendly City argues for the importance of relationship networks (social capital) in children's growth and socialization, and explores how child-friendly social capital can be cultivated through urban planning and community development. As outdoor play decreases and children spend more time online, Kinoshita and Terada return to John Dewey's proposal that social capital is essential for nurturing the next generation and establish a democratic and sustainable society. The book features examples from Sweden, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, and Japan, exploring methods for cultivating social capital and spaces for children to play and develop in cooperative housing, outdoor play spaces, streets, parks, and neighbourhoods. We express our gratitude to Dr. Marketta Kytta, Professor of Aalto University, who gave valuable suggestions about the key term 'bullerby' and 'social capital'.This book will be of use to students and practitioners of urban planning and landscape architecture, as well as any community leaders or developers seeking to foster a nurturing environment where children can flourish.

Murals and street art serve as dynamic stages for communities and individuals with multiple and sometimes opposing identities, with the potential to cause disturbance and conflict. The book investigates the challenges they present to cities and city administrations, and the policies and practices that are crafted to address them. The global landscape of today's mural policies is discussed comparatively across a range of cities, and the impact of written rules, unofficial practices, and institutional arrangements on city spaces, walls, and surfaces is examined. An important contribution to this growing field, the book will appeal to students, practitioners, and scholars with an interest in public art, municipal governance, public space management, cultural policy, and urban design.

Governing Urban Development in China: Critical Urban Studies. 240 pp. 2024:12 (Routledge, UK) <731-824>

ISBN 978-1-03-240896-5 paper ¥10,253.- (税込) GB£ 35.99
The book investigates urban development and governance in China and introduces China perspectives to the understanding of governing urban development in the 21st century.Building upon a rich and burgeoning literature on China, the book explains major changes in governance, offers a well-synthesized account of state-centered governance, and provides in-depth discussions on urban governance, city and regional planning, financing and financialization, urban redevelopment, local economic development and innovation, and environmental governance. The book bridges theoretical concepts in critical urban studies and empirical research on China and thus depicts a fuller picture of changing and variegated urban governance in the contemporary world. The book theorizes Chinese urban governance from the ground up and derives a concept of state entrepreneurialism as a framework for narrating urban governance in China. Following this framework, each chapter begins with a brief introduction to key concepts in urban geography and then depicts the urban development process on the ground in China. Then, the chapters discuss these concepts and explanations because many are derived from a different context, often in Western economies. At the end of each chapter, the phenomenal urban changes are evaluated with their theoretical implications. This book offers contextualized insights into critical geographical studies of urban governance and is the first essential complementary reading for both urban scholars and those exploring the geography of China. It will be of interest to students and researchers in Urban Geography, Urban Studies, Urban Planning, Sociology, Political Science, and China Studies. The book can also be complementary reading in China Studies, especially in governance and politics.

This book offers comprehensive state-of-the-art knowledge of how ride-hailing applications (RHAs) are changing the landscape of urban mobility in developing Southeast Asia by examining the disruptions they cause, the impacts of RHAs on the transportation system, and public policy responses aimed at mitigating these impacts.Providing new perspectives on the familiar issues by taking the local contexts of middle-income SEA into account, where abundant and diverse modes of informal transportation thrive amidst rapid urbanization and motorization, the book also draws lessons based on empirical evidence on how public interventions can benefit urban mobility for other developing countries. Each city-specific chapter sets the stage by overviewing the city and its transportation system, and delves into the specifics of its RHA market, such as market structure and demand characteristics. Impacts of RHAs on other transportation operators as well as responses from affected parties are discussed, followed by the ensuing regulatory efforts and their outcomes. Findings from each city are internationally compared and lessons drawn from them that are useful for policymaking. The book will present insights into useful and effective policy interventions pertaining to RHAs, including how the new technology may affect the infrastructure investment decision and how RHA may be leveraged as an intervention tool in urban mobility in developing countries.Digital Transport Platforms and Urban Mobility provides academics and upper level students with in-depth knowledge and practices of the disruptive technology in urban transportation due to the advent of mobile ride-hailing applications in Southeast Asian countries. It will be an invaluable resource for all those interested in transportation planning and policy, urban and regional planning, with a particular emphasis on sustainability.

This Element focuses on how narrative is used to construct religious identity in superdiverse contexts, considering specifically how people talk about their own religious identity, and the religious identity of others. Drawing on interviews with twenty-five participants, and numerous site visits throughout the city of Birmingham (UK), the analysis focuses on how self and other positioning is used to construct religious identity in talk about beliefs, actions, and behaviours in different contexts. Additionally, the analysis shows how conflict emerges and is resolved in spaces where people of different faiths and no faith interact, and how people talk about and understand community. Finally, a model for talking about faith in diverse contexts is presented to help people find common goals and act together towards shared interests.
