Reiffen, Franziska, The Social Life of the Mall: Working and Dwelling in Urban Argentina. (Urban Studies) 252 S. 2024:10 (Transcript, GW) <739-596>
ISBN 978-3-8376-7364-7 paper ¥10,444.- (税込) EUR 45.00

Paseo La Estacion, a mall in Buenos Aires, is as much a place of transit as a place of encounter, where long-term residents and newcomers, people with and without jobs, homeowners and those without housing meet. In the process, social tensions emerge, especially when classist, migrantizing, and moralizing distinctions become relevant in conflict-laden negotiations of belonging. In an ethnography of the mall, Franziska Reiffen explores how people find opportunities for social, economic, and political participation in precarious conditions, and shows how people create socially meaningful places in a city characterized by diversity, inequality, and mobility.

Andres, Lauren, Adaptable Cities and Temporary Urbanisms. 320 pp. 2025:2 (Columbia U. Pr., US) <739-622>
ISBN 978-0-231-20806-2 hard ¥30,954.- (税込) US$ 140.00
ISBN 978-0-231-20807-9 paper ¥7,738.- (税込) US$ 35.00

Cities are typically thought of as permanent. Structures, streets, infrastructure, and other features of the built environment, even if they are periodically replaced, are intended to endure. But temporary, flexible spaces and uses are essential to how cities function and the ways urban dwellers inhabit them. Such adaptability, moreover, is fundamental if cities are to meet the challenges of the future. This book examines temporary urbanisms across varied global contexts, considering their significance for cities and everyday life as well as for policy and practice. It brings together many distinct forms and facets of temporariness and adaptability-from sites of consumption by privileged residents to the survival strategies of marginalized groups-drawing on examples spanning five continents. Lauren Andres explores the driving forces of adaptability as well as the power dynamics and tensions between temporariness and permanence. She highlights how adaptability enhances livability, sustainability, and resilience, showing its importance for addressing crises such as climate change, socioeconomic inequalities, and pandemics. Authoritative and wide-ranging, Adaptable Cities and Temporary Urbanisms reveals why experimentation and creativity are crucial to the present and future of cities.

Damurski, Lukasz, The Foundations of Multi-channel Neighborhood Governance. (Local and Urban Governance) 144 pp. 2025:2 (Springer, GW) <739-623>
ISBN 978-3-031-75123-3 hard ¥27,848.- (税込) EUR 119.99

The book presents various aspects of the current urban development in the context of the recent rapid growth of the ICT sector. It focuses on the local scale, in line with the notion that the neighborhood is the fundamental component of any urban area. Beginning with a critical overview of the urban governance paradigms, through a careful analysis of the multifaceted relationships between the Internet and the urban functions, followed by a description of selected approaches to local urban spatial policy, it concludes with a concept of multi-channel neighborhood governance (MCNG). The key observation is that the accelerating virtualization of urban life has profound consequences for the spatial, social, and economic structures of cities. At the local level, it is changing the functional profile of neighborhoods, replacing some traditional on-site local services with online ones, reducing (or even eliminating) the need for face-to-face social interaction, rejoining work and home roles, and modifying the spatial behaviors of residents. All of this calls for a prompt response from the neighborhood governance, which should include the nonspatial (online) components of contemporary urban lifestyles. The book searches for an alternative to conventional planning, capable of addressing the virtualization of different urban functions at the neighborhood level and providing satisfactory solutions for shaping an optimal balance between online and offline environments. The study defines a comprehensive method for the management of essential services in urban neighborhoods, with special attention to the integration of online and offline channels. The MCNG concept includes a list of recommendations for urban policy practitioners on how to deal with digital conversion, how to manage land use, how to stimulate entrepreneurship, and how to improve quality of life.

Kajdanek, Katarzyna / Bednarczyk, Anna et al. (eds.), Crisis, Conflict and Celebration: Ethnographic Studies of European Cities. 319 pp. 2025:3 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <739-629>
ISBN 978-981-9797-18-9 hard ¥32,490.- (税込) EUR 139.99

This book illuminates how the profound challenges faced by contemporary societies over the past few decades, encompassing climate change and other environmental risks, global health threats, warfare, and mass migration, manifest themselves in European cities. The chapters bring cutting-edge ethnographic studies which address these complex issues through three key conceptual dimensions of urban life: crisis, conflict, and celebration. The concept of crisis is critically explored in its various economic, political and cultural dimensions affecting urban residents in multiple social and spatial aspects of their lives. Crises often lead to conflicts, dynamic processes that give rise to interest groups and complex social landscapes of resistance. By examining conflicts in urban contexts, the book uncovers the power dynamics and vulnerabilities emerging during turbulent times. Crises and conflicts also present opportunities for urban transformation and regeneration, bringing underlying beliefs and norms into question, paving the way for new social dynamics within urban environments. These conflictual spaces can therefore become arenas for celebration of urbanity, where communities express resilience, cultural identity, and collective solidarity. As well as providing new insights into the present and future of European cities and the pivotal role of urban areas as centers of social change, contestation, and community-building, the book provides an important methodological contribution through innovative qualitative research in a diverse range of European urban areas.

Li, Xuewen, Land Developmentalism: Local Governments and Land Overdevelopment in China. (Urban Sustainability) 209 pp. 2025:2 (Springer, GW) <739-387>
ISBN 978-981-9795-93-2 hard ¥30,169.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book examines the strategies adopted by local governments to obtain excess construction land quotas in the face of the central government's strict land management system. It applies game theory, principal-agent theory, collective action theory, and competition and collusion theory to analyze the trade-offs and constraints faced by local governments under the existing institutional framework. It also empirically tests the imitative competitive strategy of land violation and the institutional collusion strategy of land development rights trading using spatial panel model and Tobit model. The book reveals the internal mechanism behind local governments' simultaneous adoption of competitive and collusive strategies in pursuing local interests and economic growth. It also shows how local governments' land violations have significant strategic characteristics in time and space, and how economic development gap, resource endowment gap, and human network relationship influence their collusion formation in land development rights trading. This book is a valuable contribution to the literature on land management, local governance, and political economy in China. It is suitable for scholars, students, policy makers, and practitioners who are interested in understanding the complex dynamics of land development in China. The book is written in an accessible and engaging style, with clear explanations of theoretical concepts and empirical methods.

ISBN 978-981-9600-65-6 paper ¥11,601.- (税込) EUR 49.99

This book explores how the development of innovative urban agricultural businesses is creating social innovation and changing the perception and behavior of urban residents, with a focus on Shanghai, China, a global city that has achieved economic growth amid rapid urbanization. Latent class analysis, cognitive map analysis, and structural equation modeling were introduced in this research to evaluate the results of a questionnaire survey of urban residents' sense of community and community garden initiatives. Qualitative analyses such as the trajectory equifinality model were applied to cases of social entrepreneurs in urban agriculture as a creative class. The analytical results revealed that urban agriculture can contribute to the quality of urban life. In addition, the results made clear that diverse strategies are implemented in urban agriculture, bringing about changes in the urban sociocultural environment, such as the interaction among social entrepreneurs and stakeholders, including urban residents and policy makers. The government should implement policies and measures that transform the socio-cultural environment, encompassing gender issues, in order to achieve the well-being of urban residents. It is extremely important for policy makers to understand residents' true needs and their diversity, and to effectively reflect them in urban planning and project implementation.
