Meagher, Timothy J.,
Becoming Irish American: The Making and Remaking of a People from Roanoke to JFK. 344 pp. 2023:11 (Yale U. Pr., US) <701-955>
ISBN 978-0-300-12627-3 hard ¥6,468.- (税込) US$ 30.00 *
The origins and evolution of Irish American identity, from colonial times through the twentieth century "Subtly provocative. . . . [Meagher] traces the making and remaking of Irish America through several iterations and shows the impact of religion on each."-Terry Golway, Wall Street Journal As millions of Irish immigrants and their descendants created community in the United States over the centuries, they neither remained Irish nor simply became American. Instead, they created a culture and defined an identity that was unique to their circumstances, a new people that they would continually reinvent: Irish Americans. Historian Timothy J. Meagher traces the Irish American experience from the first Irishman to step ashore at Roanoke in 1585 to John F. Kennedy's election as president in 1960. As he chronicles how Irish American culture evolved, Meagher looks at how various groups adapted and thrived-Protestants and Catholics, immigrants and American born, those located in different geographic corners of the country. He describes how Irish Americans made a living, where they worshiped, and when they married, and how Irish American politicians found particular success, from ward bosses on the streets of New York, Boston, and Chicago to the presidency. In this sweeping history, Meagher reveals how the Irish American identity was forged, how it has transformed, and how it has held lasting influence on American culture.

How can you incorporate antiracist practices into specific subject areas? This practical guide answers that question and provides a road map for introducing antiracism into the English language arts (ELA) classroom with teacher-friendly tools and strategies. Drawing on foundational and cutting-edge knowledge of antiracism, expert Keisha Rembert responds to the following questions: What does antiracism look like in the English language arts classroom, given the unique responsibilities of the ELA educator; why is it vital to implement antiracist practices that are relevant to your classroom and school; and how can you enact antiracist pedagogies that foster critical engagement and stimulate a culture of antiracism? Aligned with National Council of Teachers of English standards, this accessible resource is replete with hands-on antiracist activities, teacher insights and interviews, questions to spark reflection and action and lesson plans and is essential reading for all ELA teachers. From building an antiracist foundation to evaluating the effect of antiracist practice on students and reflecting on your own lived experience, this book is a truly comprehensive guide for educators who want to empower all students. Rembert demonstrates how to find motivation in progress and joy in the process, pushing past confusion and discomfort in a continued effort to create an equitable, inclusive and antiracist ELA classroom.

Systemic Racism and Educational Measurement: Confronting Injustice in Testing, Assessment, and Beyond. 464 pp. 2023:8 (Routledge, UK) <701-957>
ISBN 978-1-03-212881-8 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
ISBN 978-1-03-213202-0 paper ¥12,532.- (税込) GB£ 43.99 *
Systemic Racism and Educational Measurement provides a theoretical and historical reckoning with racism and oppression produced through educational measurement and research methodology. As scholars and professionals in the testing, measurement, and assessment of human learning and performance work to exorcise race sciences, white supremacy, and other injustices from the field's research and practice, new insights are needed into their root causes. This book is the first to posit that the theory of the White Racial Frame was and continues to be applied to the foundations, process, dissemination, and use of educational measurement, leading to instruments, findings, and decisions that perpetuate the racialized social structure of our nation. Even among well-meaning stakeholders who aim to improve humanity and address inequities, the White Racial Frame shapes the field's research questions, the methods utilized, the data valued, the interpretations made, and the language used throughout. Students and scholars of educational measurement, testing, and psychometrics will find invaluable clarifications of terminology, concepts, and theories integral to understanding systemic barriers in the field; explications of educational measurement's core purposes and its influence by the White Racial Frame; and a series of alternate frames, theories, and epistemologies intended to guide educational measurement toward anti-racism and increased fairness.

Savage, Barbara D.,
Merze Tate: The Global Odyssey of a Black Woman Scholar. 320 pp. 2024:2 (Yale U. Pr., US) <701-959>
ISBN 978-0-300-27027-3 hard ¥7,546.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *
A powerful and inspiring biography of Merze Tate, a trailblazing Black woman scholar and intrepid world traveler Born in rural Michigan during the Jim Crow era, the bold and irrepressible Merze Tate (1905-1996) refused to limit her intellectual ambitions, despite living in what she called a "sex and race discriminating world." Against all odds, the brilliant and hardworking Tate earned degrees in international relations from Oxford University in 1935 and a doctorate in government from Harvard in 1941. She then joined the faculty of Howard University, where she taught for three decades of her long life spanning the tumultuous twentieth century. This book revives and critiques Tate's prolific and prescient body of scholarship, with topics ranging from nuclear arms limitations to race and imperialism in India, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. Tate credited her success to other women, Black and white, who helped her realize her dream of becoming a scholar. Her quest for research and adventure took her around the world twice, traveling solo with her cameras. Barbara Savage's skilled rendering of Tate's story is built on more than a decade of research. Tate's life and work challenge provincial approaches to African American and American history, women's history, the history of education, diplomatic history, and international thought.

Was bedeutete Migration in Europa nach 1945?

Dilemmas of Allyship: White Anti-Racists and the Challenges of Social Justice. 192 pp. 2023:9 (Routledge, UK) <701-962>
ISBN 978-1-03-243200-7 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
ISBN 978-1-03-243199-4 paper ¥10,253.- (税込) GB£ 35.99 *
Dilemmas of Allyship investigates the political phenomenon of social justice allyship-in the form of white anti-racism-from a novel perspective. The book argues that 21st-century allyship is best understood as a set of socially mediated personal problems and challenges, and that these problems and challenges furnish the material with which many allies' identities are formed. Through an analysis of in-depth interviews with white American anti-racist activists, Dilemmas of Allyship provides a picture of the ambivalent struggles with which allies grapple, tracing the "theoretically irreducible" contradictions they regularly encounter. These contradictions, or dilemmas, are central to the ongoing project of many white activists' allyship, presenting them again and again with challenges that test their authenticity and commitment. The book also investigates how these same dilemmas can become "practically reducible" through a set of mitigating factors and strategies that intervene in and redefine allyship crises. Taken together, these analyses present a picture of allyship rarely seen: one of a lifestyle intrinsically marked by the kinds of challenges people typically avoid. Dilemmas of Allyship takes allies on their own terms, paying attention to the true ambivalence of their struggles, refusing to reduce these experiences to mere success or failure. As a result, it is able to contribute to discussions of identity politics and "white fragility" by presenting a clear picture of the existential stakes of allyship. With this picture in hand, we can better appreciate what challenges exist within the 21st-century movement for racial justice-and we can also learn something more fundamental about what it means to be a person in a contested, conflictual social world.

Wang, Bodi,
Mutual Integration in Immigration Society: An Epistemic Argument. 220 S. 2023:10 (Campus, GW) <701-963>
ISBN 978-3-593-51788-9 paper ¥8,239.- (税込) EUR 35.00 *
A compelling argument for adopting the concept of "mutual integration" to overcome injustice and enhance social solidarity. The public culture of the receiving society and the dominant understanding of belonging and political membership can influence the social participation of immigrants as much as immigration law. However, current discussions of integration focus primarily on the distribution of rights and neglect the role of tacit knowledge. Through a systematical and philosophical analysis of identity's role in policymaking, governance, and social practice, Bodi Wang shows how a one-sided understanding of integration resembles "assimilation" and why integration should be expected from locals as well. This argument weaves together extensive findings in sociology, history, critical race theory, and Chinese philosophy with ethics and migration studies.

The Italian Diaspora in South Africa: Nostalgia, Identity, and Belonging in the Second and Third Generations. (Routledge Studies in Development, Mobilities and Migration) 152 pp. 2023:6 (Routledge, UK) <701-713>
ISBN 978-1-03-221126-8 hard ¥14,241.- (税込) GB£ 49.99 *
This book investigates the experiences of second- and third-generation Italians living in South Africa, exploring how nostalgia for Italy influences their sense of identity and belonging. The Italian community in South Africa is a unique diaspora, with a complex history, including roots in Italian colonial activities in Africa, and in World War II. This book looks at how the descendants of these early migrants take pride in being Italian and value the Italian language. They also ascribe much importance to their family roots, and have often created a romanticized image of Italy, mostly based on childhood vacation visits. The longing for an imaginary idealized version of Italy is closely linked to their wider search for a sense of identity and belonging against the backdrop of South African society, currently still grappling with its own multicultural identity.Interdisciplinary by design, this book draws on insights from both cultural studies and psychology in order to shine a light on an important and under-studied diasporic community. The book will be of interest to scholars from across migration studies and the Humanities in general. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Cosmopolitan Norms and European Values: Ethical Perspectives on Europe's Refugee Policy. (Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosophy) 208 pp. 2023:8 (Routledge, UK) <701-72>
ISBN 978-1-03-212233-5 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
This volume offers a systematic philosophical analysis of the normative challenges facing European refugee policy, focusing on whether the response to it can be based on European values. By considering the refugee policy through the lens of European values, cosmopolitan norms and universal human rights, the contributions expose the weaknesses and limitations of existing regulations and make proposals on how to improve them. The EU is often seen as a cosmopolitan project. Europe is supposed to be a community of states that aspires to be guided by cosmopolitan norms. However, the idea of a cosmopolitan Europe has never been unanimously shared, and in recent years, it has come under increasing scrutiny, particularly with regard to the EU's refugee policy. The guiding idea of this book is that a deeper philosophical understanding of the normative issues at stake can foster greater conceptual clarity and enrich political debates on the future of European refugee policy. The first part of the book revolves around the question of whether the rise in refugee numbers over the past decade has led to a crisis in the EU and, if so, how this crisis relates to or impacts European values. The second part traces the history of the discourse on "European values" and examines from a philosophical perspective how we can plausibly understand these values in terms of their moral grammar, their normative content and their implications for the behaviour of the EU and its member states. Finally, the third part puts forth recommendations for a feasible and normatively more compelling European refugee policy based on human rights, human dignity, justice and democratic self-determination as the decisive normative requirements.Cosmopolitan Norms and European Values: Ethical Perspectives on Europe's Refugee Policy will be of interest to researchers and advanced students working in ethics, political philosophy, political science, social sciences and law.The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

The Routledge Handbook of Music and Migration: Theories and Methodologies. 584 pp. 2023:10 (Routledge, UK) <701-865>
ISBN 978-1-03-231372-6 hard ¥61,253.- (税込) GB£ 215.00 *
The Routledge Handbook of Music and Migration: Theories and Methodologies is a progressive, transdisciplinary paradigm-shifting core text for music and migration studies. Conceptualized as a comprehensive methodological and theoretical guide, it foregrounds the mobile potentials of music and presents key arguments about why musical expressions matter in the discussion of migration politics.24 international specialists in music and migration set methodological and theoretical standards for transdisciplinary collaborations in the field of migration studies, discussing 41 keywords, such as mobility, community, research ethics, human rights, and critical whiteness in the context of music and migration. The authors then apply these terms to 16 chapters, which deal with ethnomusicological, musicological, sociological, anthropological, geographical, pedagogical, political, economic, and media-related methodologies and theories which reflect and contest current discourses of migration. In their interdisciplinary focus, these chapters advance interrelations between music and migration as enabling factors for socio-cultural studies. Furthermore, the authors tackle crucial questions of agency, equality, and equity as well as the responsibilities and expectations of writers and artists when researching migration phenomena as innate human experience. As a result, this handbook provides scholars and students alike with relevant and applicable methodological and theoretical tools in addition to an extensive literature and research review for further research.

ISBN 978-0-300-25375-7 hard ¥7,007.- (税込) US$ 32.50 *
The first full-length biography of civil rights hero and congressman John Lewis "The perfect book, at the right time."-Michael Henry Adams, The Guardian For six decades John Robert Lewis (1940-2020) was a towering figure in the U.S. struggle for civil rights. As an activist and progressive congressman, he was renowned for his unshakable integrity, indomitable courage, and determination to get into "good trouble." In this first book-length biography of Lewis, Raymond Arsenault traces Lewis's upbringing in rural Alabama, his activism as a Freedom Rider and leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, his championing of voting rights and anti-poverty initiatives, and his decades of service as the "conscience of Congress." Both in the streets and in Congress, Lewis promoted a philosophy of nonviolence to bring about change. He helped the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders plan the 1963 March on Washington, where he spoke at the Lincoln Memorial. Lewis's activism led to repeated arrests and beatings, most notably when he suffered a skull fracture in Selma, Alabama, during the 1965 police attack later known as Bloody Sunday. He was instrumental in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and in Congress he advocated for racial and economic justice, immigration reform, LGBTQ rights, and national health care. Arsenault recounts Lewis's lifetime of work toward one overarching goal: realizing the "beloved community," an ideal society based in equity and inclusion. Lewis never wavered in this pursuit, and even in death his influence endures, inspiring mobilization and resistance in the fight for social justice.

Etzel, Morgan,
The German Migration Integration Regime: Syrian Refugees, Bureaucracy, and Inclusion. (Global Migration and Social Change) 224 pp. 2023:10 (Bristol U. Pr., UK) <701-941>
ISBN 978-1-5292-3123-6 hard ¥22,792.- (税込) GB£ 80.00 *
Syrian refugees who gained asylum in Germany following the so-called refugee crisis in 2015 quickly entered into an 'integration regime' which produced a binary notion of 'well integrated' migrants versus refugees falling short of the narrow social and political definitions of a 'good' refugee. Etzel's rich ethnographic study shows how refugees navigated this conditional inclusion. While some asylum seekers gained international protection, others were left with limited agency to demand government accountability for the ever-moving target of integration. Putting a spotlight on the inconsistencies and failings of a universal approach to integration, this is an important contribution to the wider field of migration and anthropology of the state.

With the increasing focus on the critical importance of mentoring in advancing Black women students from graduation to careers in academia, this book identifies and considers the peer mentoring contexts and conditions that support Black women student success in higher education. This edited collection focuses on Black women students primarily at the doctoral level and how they have retained each other through their educational journey, emphasizing how they navigated this season of educational changes given COVID and racial unrest. Chapters illuminate what minoritized women students have done to mentor each other to navigate unwelcome campus environments laden with identity politics and other structural barriers. Shining a light on systemic structures in place that contribute to Black women's alienation in the academy, this book unpacks implications for interactions and engagement with faculty as advisors and mentors. An important resource for faculty and graduate students at colleges and universities, ultimately this work is critical to helping the academy fortify Black women's sense of belonging and connection early in their academic career and foster their success. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license.

Reimagining Chinese Diasporas in a Transnational World examines the changing nature of the Chinese diasporas in a transnational world and its concomitant implications for Chinese diaspora studies internationally. With a shifting paradigm of transnationalism and transnational migration, new patterns of Chinese mobilities have emerged that can be characterised as multiple and circular rather than unidirectional or final. This book illustrates how the analytical constructs of hypermobility, hyperdiversity and hyperconnectivity aid in the understanding of contemporary Chinese transnational diasporas. The book offers new research findings and theorisation and contributes to the existing Chinese diasporas literature and the interdisciplinary fields of ethnic, migration and mobility studies. It stimulates further research and scholarly work on the Chinese diasporas in the age of transnational migration. This book will be a great resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of sociology, ethnic studies, international politics, and migration studies. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Racial Imagination and the American Dream: The Peace-Maker, The Prophet and The Politician. (Routledge Research in Race and Ethnicity) 176 pp. 2023:8 (Routledge, UK) <701-947>

Although the phrase "the American Dream" dates from the 1930s, the concept or idea of the American Dream is as old as the country. The values proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence and reaffirmed (and extended) in the Gettysburg Address have been continuously promoted by every American president. Moreover, they form the basis of our national collective narrative as expressed through both elite and popular culture. The American Dream is intrinsically tied to the American Creed and American Exceptionalism. It is the foundation of our national identity, the glue that holds together our individual aspirations. Yet until the mid-twentieth century, the American Dream excluded African Americans. We as a nation-as an imagined community-could not imagine an integrated, multiracial society with Blacks and Whites living together as equals.By examining the lives of the only three African American Nobel Peace Prize winners, we can see how their lives were shaped by the American Dream, and how their success was used to deny the structural racism that prevented others from achieving the American Dream. Ralph Bunche as a role model of academic and technical expertise, Martin Luther King, Jr., as a model race leader, and Barack Obama as a political leader provide a window on the changing meaning of the American Dream. In conclusion, Haiti is presented as a failed example of an attempt to export the American Dream in the form of American Exceptionalism, and racial reparations are reimagined as a radical democratic project aimed at true global integration and justice.

David J. Luke's Affirmative Action and Black Student Success is a concrete and comprehensive exploration into diversity programs on college campuses and their impact on Black student success and outcomes. Viewed over the span of 12 years, three large, public universities in the United States and Canada provide dynamic settings for this book's comparative focus on diversity initiatives. The author identifies key regional and national differences between these settings, as well as differences in the way diversity is framed and understood to illustrate how diversity programs and policies are shaped and the extent and ways in which these programs and policies then shape student experiences and outcomes. The values and meanings organizations ascribe to diversity, inclusion, and equity are frequently in transition, and the book's compelling analysis conveys the importance of race in these contexts-when racism is presumed to be in decline, as is the case in colorblindness and demonstrations of multiculturalist ideals, racial inequalities are concealed and remain unnoticed. The author makes a range of practical recommendations and argues that clear and explicit goals about race and representation are integral in the expansion and preservation of inclusive institutional environments.Unflinching in its critique and pragmatic with its recommendations, this book offers invaluable analysis for university leaders, diversity officers, and student affairs professionals, as much as it provides new insights for scholars and educators of racism, higher education, diversity, and organizational culture.

Exploring Urban Youth Culture Outside of the Gang Paradigm: Critical Questions of Youth, Gender and Race On-road. 256 pp. 2023:9 (Bristol U. Pr., UK) <701-441>
ISBN 978-1-5292-2557-0 hard ¥24,498.- (税込) GB£ 85.99 *
On-road' is a complex term used by young people to describe street-based subculture and a general way of being. Featuring the voices of young people, this collection explores how race, class and gender dynamics shape this aspect of youth culture. With young people on-road often becoming criminalised due to interlocking structural inequalities, this book looks beyond concerns about gangs and presents empirical research from scholars and activists who work with and study the social lives of young people. It addresses the concerns of practitioners, policy makers and scholars by analysing aspects and misinterpretations of the shifting realities of young people's urban life.

UK Borderscapes: Sites of Enforcement and Resistance. (Routledge Borderlands Studies) 232 pp. 2023:9 (Routledge, UK) <701-549>

This book analyses bordering practices and their negative effects as well as the many creative and often grassroots ways in which borders are resisted and reinvented. From the hostile environment to Brexit and the Nationality and Borders Bill, the UK border regime has become increasingly strict and complex, operating both at the edge of the state and within everyday life in unprecedented ways. At the same time, this securitisation approach is often contested, and its effects are fought daily by many groups and individuals. This book explores this tension, documenting and analysing how the contemporary UK border is imagined, constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed in multiple ways. To draw together the different pieces that compose this evolving and conflicting landscape, this book uses the concept of "borderscapes", which views borders as sites of multiple tensions between hegemonic, non-hegemonic, and counter-hegemonic imaginaries and practices. This lens enables contributors to draw a multifocal overview of the UK border that includes the different human and material actors that form it, the spaces and practices they shape, and the imaginaries and counter-imaginaries that emerge from their conflictual encounters.Bringing together contributions by researchers from a variety of disciplines, this book will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of migration and border studies, refugee studies, human geography, criminology, sociology, and anthropology.

The Balkan Route: Hope, Migration and Europeanisation in Liminal Spaces. (Southeast European Studies) 208 pp. 2023:9 (Routledge, UK) <701-569>
ISBN 978-1-03-239543-2 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
This book is an ethnography of the people migrating through the Balkan route and the reaction of the local communities who witnessed their struggle to reach the European Union (EU). Based on extensive fieldwork conducted in North Macedonia and Serbia, it pays special attention to the "refugee crisis" that gave birth to a new border regime based on a permanent suspension of laws, normalisation of violence and the entrapment of migrants stranded in a liminal space at the gates to the EU, able to go neither further nor back. The book will appeal to an international audience of academics of migration studies, social and political science, and the wider public interested in migration and social and political changes in Southeast Europe.
