Lucenti, Maria (ed.), Women in Formal and Informal Education: International Comparative Perspectives in the History of Education. (Comparative and International Education: Diversity of Voices 57) 172 pp. 2023:5 (Brill, NE) <700-2093>

Understanding the processes related to gender construction requires a multi and interdisciplinary approach. Complexity emerges as a category of investigation and an end to be pursued, giving space to a plurality of voices, interpretations, and points of view. With such intellectual curiosity, the volume's authors questioned the inclusion and exclusion of these multiple voices in education. How has teaching on gender made room for this complexity? What views were included? Which ones were overlooked? What have educational models for children been privileged in the imagination? Which histories and stories have accompanied them in acquiring an awareness linked to gender? Through such important questions and many more, the volume highlights the gender changes that took place from mid-eighteen century to today in various contexts relating to formal and informal education through an international comparative perspective. The multiplicity of approaches, methodologies, and perspectives allows us to read and analyze these changes in a composite way, underlining little-known aspects of gender studies in the historical-educational field.

Berkel, Klaas / Homburg, Ernst (eds.), The Laboratory Revolution and the Creation of the Modern University, 1830-1940. (Studies in the History of Knowledge) 346 pp. 2023:5 (Amsterdam U. Pr., NE) <700-2132>
ISBN 978-94-6372-043-4 hard ¥39,483.- (税込) GB£ 137.00 *

The modern research university originated in Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century, largely due to the creation and expansion of the teaching and research laboratory. The universities and the sciences underwent a laboratory revolution that fundamentally changed the nature of both. This revolutionary development began in chemistry, where Justus Liebig is credited with systematically employing his students in his ongoing research during the 1830s. Later, this development spread to other fields, including the social sciences and the humanities. The consequences for the universities were colossal. The expansion of the laboratories demanded extensive new building programs, reshaping the outlook of the university. The social structure of the university also diversified because of this laboratory expansion, while what it meant to be a scientist changed dramatically. This volume explores the spatial, social, and cultural dimensions of the rise of the modern research laboratory within universities and their consequent reshaping.

Keane, Ann (ed.), Watchdogs or Visionaries?: Perspectives on the History of the Education Inspectorate in Wales. 248 pp. 2022:11 (U. Wales Pr., UK) <700-2133>
ISBN 978-1-78683-940-4 paper ¥7,201.- (税込) GB£ 24.99 *

This is a ground-breaking history of school and college inspection in Wales. With contributions from two former chief inspectors, two former HMI and leading historians, it offers an authoritative account of how the inspectorate has changed over time. Since their beginnings in 1839, HMI have steered a course between being instruments of the state and independent influencers of education policy and practice. They have been much-valued catalysts for improvement in schools and colleges, and have had a key role in promoting the teaching of the Welsh language, history and culture. This book is written for anyone concerned with the history of education in Wales, the history of accountability in education, with approaches to school improvement, and the extent to which HMI have influenced or been at odds with education policy making. At a time when the inspectorate itself is under review, this is a timely reminder of its wide-ranging services.

Lyons, Tony, The Pay Schools of Ireland and their Interface with the National System of Education: An Historical Analysis. 284 pp. 2023:3 (P. Lang, SZ) <700-2135>
ISBN 978-1-80079-778-9 paper ¥15,276.- (税込) SFR 62.00

The book deals with the clash between the free, enterprising pay schools and the controlled and systematized national schools. Many commissions of inquiry were instigated, beginning in 1791, and continuing until the foundations of the national school system of 1831. From Thomas Orde in the 1780s to Thomas Wyse in 1830, the cumulative evidence of the commissions of inquiry led to the substitution of the long-running pay schools. The new systematic approach introduced teacher training, purpose-built schools, inspection, uniform school texts, and an array of rules and regulations. It took the people considerable time to grapple with the new regime. In order to understand the difficulties the people had in accepting the new schools, it is worth drawing attention to Brian Friel's play Translations in which he teases out the alien concept of an imposed school in a remote part of Donegal.
