Wolloch, Nathaniel,
Moderate and Radical Liberalism: The Enlightenment Sources of Liberal Thought. (History of European Political and Constitutional Thought 8) 950 pp. 2022:3 (Brill, NE) <670-48>
ISBN 978-90-04-50803-3 hard ¥46,844.- (税込) EUR 199.00
This book provides a new reading of one of the most significant chapters in the history of social and political thought - the transition from the late Enlightenment to early liberalism. In contrast with prevailing interpretations of the emergence of liberalism, which emphasize the conservative liberal reaction of the nineteenth century, it presents a more optimistic depiction of how formerly radical principles of the Enlightenment were eventually adopted by the mainstream of moderate early liberalism. To substantiate this innovative interpretation the book provides a detailed history of late Enlightenment and early liberal social and political thought on both sides of the Atlantic.

Oram, Matan,
The Ethos of the Enlightenment and the Discontents of Modernity. (Routledge Advances in Sociology) 296 pp. 2023:5 (Routledge, UK) <670-43>
ISBN 978-0-367-02641-7 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
This book probes the sources and nature of the 'discontents of modernity'. It proposes a new approach to the philosophic-critical discourse on modernity. The Enlightenment is widely understood to be the foundational moment of modernity. Yet despite its appeal to reason as the ultimate ground of its authority and legitimacy, the Enlightenment has had multiple historical manifestations and, therefore, can hardly be said to be a homogenous phenomenon. The present work seeks to identify a unitive element that allows us to speak of the Enlightenment. To do so, it enjoins the concept of 'ethos' and its relation to the 'discontents of modernity'. This book proposes a new theoretical framework for the examination of the interrelationships between 'critical thought' and 'modernity', based on a fundamental distinction between criticism and negation. It will appeal to scholars and students of critical theory, the history of ideas, philosophy, the sociology of knowledge, and political science.

A.スミス再考-歴史、自由、近代政治の基礎
Sagar, Paul,
Adam Smith Reconsidered: History, Liberty, and the Foundations of Modern Politics. 248 pp. 2022:3 (Princeton U. Pr., US) <670-45>
ISBN 978-0-691-21083-4 hard ¥8,408.- (税込) US$ 39.00 *
A radical reinterpretation of Adam Smith that challenges economists, moral philosophers, political theorists, and intellectual historians to rethink him-and why he mattersAdam Smith has long been recognized as the father of modern economics. More recently, scholars have emphasized his standing as a moral philosopher-one who was prepared to critique markets as well as to praise them. But Smith's contributions to political theory are still underappreciated and relatively neglected. In this bold, revisionary book, Paul Sagar argues that not only have the fundamentals of Smith's political thought been widely misunderstood, but that once we understand them correctly, our estimations of Smith as economist and as moral philosopher must radically change.Rather than seeing Smith either as the prophet of the free market, or as a moralist who thought the dangers of commerce lay primarily in the corrupting effects of trade, Sagar shows why Smith is more thoroughly a political thinker who made major contributions to the history of political thought. Smith, Sagar argues, saw war, not commerce, as the engine of political change and he was centrally concerned with the political, not moral, dimensions of-and threats to-commercial societies. In this light, the true contours and power of Smith's foundational contributions to western political thought emerge as never before.Offering major reinterpretations of Smith's political, moral, and economic ideas, Adam Smith Reconsidered seeks to revolutionize how he is understood. In doing so, it recovers Smith's original way of doing political theory, one rooted in the importance of history and the necessity of maintaining a realist sensibility, and from which we still have much to learn.

J.ロックと寛容の根拠
Loque, Flavio Fontenelle,
John Locke and the Grounds for Toleration. (Archives internationales d'histoire des idees / International Archives of the History of Ideas 237) 209 pp. 2022:3 (Springer, GW) <670-41>
ISBN 978-3-030-90362-6 hard ¥25,890.- (税込) EUR 109.99 *
This book offers a detailed analysis of John Locke's case for toleration and proposes an interpretation that shows the links between his political reasoning and his reflection on the ethics of belief. Locke is concerned with toleration not only when he discusses the ends of the Commonwealth, but also when he assesses the duties of private persons regarding the search for truth. The purpose of this book is to shed light on both of these branches, which have not been sufficiently explored in other studies on Locke. With particular attention to the notions of charity, obstinacy, fallibility, reciprocity and distinction between belief and knowledge, the author proposes a reading of the Epistola de Tolerantia, an extensive discussion of the controversy between Locke and Jonas Proast, as well as an examination of An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, in order to establish the meaning and interconnection of Locke's arguments in favour of toleration.

Mulsow, Martin,
Knowledge Lost: A New View of Early Modern Intellectual History. 424 pp. 2022:7 (Princeton U. Pr., US) <670-42>
ISBN 978-0-691-20865-7 hard ¥8,613.- (税込) US$ 39.95 *
A compelling alternative account of the history of knowledge from the Renaissance to the EnlightenmentUntil now the history of knowledge has largely been about formal and documented accumulation, concentrating on systems, collections, academies, and institutions. The central narrative has been one of advancement, refinement, and expansion. Martin Mulsow tells a different story. Knowledge can be lost: manuscripts are burned, oral learning dies with its bearers, new ideas are suppressed by censors. Knowledge Lost is a history of efforts, from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, to counter such loss. It describes how critics of ruling political and religious regimes developed tactics to preserve their views; how they buried their ideas in footnotes and allusions; how they circulated their tracts and treatises in handwritten copies; and how they commissioned younger scholars to spread their writings after death.Filled with exciting stories, Knowledge Lost follows the trail of precarious knowledge through a series of richly detailed episodes. It deals not with the major themes of metaphysics and epistemology, but rather with interpretations of the Bible, Orientalism, and such marginal zones as magic. And it focuses not on the usual major thinkers, but rather on forgotten or half-forgotten members of the "knowledge underclass," such as Pietro della Vecchia, a libertine painter and intellectual; Charles-Cesar Baudelot, an antiquarian and numismatist; and Johann Christoph Wolf, a pastor, Hebrew scholar, and witness to the persecution of heretics.Offering a fascinating new approach to the intellectual history of early modern Europe, Knowledge Lost is also an ambitious attempt to rethink the very concept of knowledge.

Enskat, Rainer,
Aufklaerung - Wissenschaft - Religion: Zur Genese unseres neuzeitlichen Spannungsfeldes. (Blaue Reihe) 112 S. 2022:3 (F. Meiner, GW) <670-34>
ISBN 978-3-7873-4145-0 paper ¥3,977.- (税込) EUR 16.90

Academic Skepticism in Hume and Kant: A Ciceronian Critique of Metaphysics. (Synthese Library 449) 268 pp. 2022:1 (Springer, GW) <670-36>
ISBN 978-3-030-89749-9 hard ¥28,244.- (税込) EUR 119.99 *
This book offers an unprecedented study of the influence of the skepticism of the New Platonic Academy on David Hume's and Immanuel Kant's critiques of metaphysics. By demonstrating how the skeptical teachings of the Academy affected these authors' Enlightened attacks on traditional metaphysics, this book deepens and broadens the burgeoning scholarship on the role that the Ancients schools of skepticism played in the configuration of Modern skeptical outlooks. It bolsters the newfound recognition that we must reconsider the conventional view that the revival of Pyrrhonism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries gave birth to Modern skepticism by incorporating the influence of Academic skepticism in the analysis.Giving a new impetus to this line of research, the author argues that Academic ideas and methods informed Hume's and Kant's critique of metaphysics in substantial and thus far unacknowledged ways. Specifically, she demonstrates the centrality of Academic skepticismto Hume's epistemology and critique of religion through a detailed analysis of his theory of belief in the Treatise and the first Enquiry as well as of its application in the Dialogues concerning Natural Religion. Likewise, her analysis reveals how Kant's anti-metaphysical stance, developed in the Transcendental Dialectic of the Critique of Pure Reason, contains many skeptical insights of Academic inspiration, bequeathed to him by Hume.

DiIulio, John Peter,
Completely Free: The Moral and Political Vision of John Stuart Mill. 328 pp. 2022:5 (Princeton U. Pr., US) <670-31>
ISBN 978-0-691-21122-0 hard ¥9,702.- (税込) US$ 45.00 *
An original, unified reconstruction of Mill's moral and political philosophy-one that finally reveals its consistency and full powerFew thinkers have been as influential as John Stuart Mill, whose philosophy has arguably defined Utilitarian ethics and modern liberalism. But fewer still have been subject to as much criticism for perceived ambiguities and inconsistencies. In Completely Free, John Peter DiIulio offers an ambitious and comprehensive new reading that explains how Mill's ethical, moral, and political ideas are all part of a unified, coherent, and powerful philosophy.Almost every aspect of Mill's practical philosophy has been charged with contradictions, illogic, or incoherence. Most notoriously, Mill claims an absolute commitment both to promoting societal happiness and to defending individual liberty-a commitment that many critics believe must ultimately devolve into an either/or. DiIulio resolves these and other problems by reconsidering and reconstructing the key components of Mill's practical thought: his theories of happiness, morality, liberty, and freedom. Casting new light on old texts, DiIulio argues that Mill's Utilitarianism and liberalism are not only compatible but philosophically wedded, that his theories naturally emanate from one another, and that the vast majority of interpretive mysteries surrounding Mill can be readily demystified. In a manner at once sympathetic and critical, DiIulio seeks to present Mill in his most lucid and potent form. From the higher pleasures and moral impartiality to free speech and nondomination, Completely Free provides an unmatched account of the unity and power of Mill's enduring moral and political thought.
