The Far-Right Discourse of Multiculturalism in Everyday Talk: Reproduction and Contestation in the Nordic Context. (Palgrave Studies in Discursive Psychology) 200 pp. 2022:2 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <669-866>
ISBN 978-3-030-89065-0 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This edited collection employs a discursive psychology approach to examine how far-right discourse on issues related to multiculturalism is received, interpreted, adapted and contested in political and institutionalized rhetoric (in the form of news media material, political debates, blogs, social media and party websites) as well as grassroots-level, everyday talk in online as well as offline settings. It brings together the latest research from sociology and media studies concerning the circulation of far-right messages in the era of digitalization and the ‘hybrid media system’, and critical discursive psychology research into political and lay discourse pertaining to multiculturalism. Drawing on empirical material from the Nordic context allows for an analysis of political discourse within societies in which a strong tradition of social democratic welfare states now exists alongside the rise of populist and far-right parties. Operating in countries with comparatively high national internet and social media penetration, this book explores the extent to which the success of these parties is linked to their skillful use of social media, in order to mobilise popular support for their political agendas. Its multilevel perspective aims to further the understanding of how the anti-immigration and anti-multiculturalist ideologies propagated by these parties contributes to the mainstreaming of their rhetoric among the political ‘elite’, as well as to the societal normalization of nationalist and xenophobic discourse. In doing so it will provide fresh insights for students and scholars of sociology, social psychology, discourse analysis, media and communication, and political science.

Vitz, Paul C. (ed.),
The Complementarity of Women and Men: Philosophy, Theology, Psychology, and Art. 256 pp. 2021:4 (Catholic U. America Pr., US) <669-91>
ISBN 978-0-8132-3388-8 paper ¥7,535.- (税込) US$ 34.95 *
The Complementarity of Women and Men provides a Catholic Christian case that men and women are in certain respects quite different but also have a positive, synergistic complementary relationship. Although differences and their mutually supporting relationships are focused on throughout the volume, men and women are assumed to have equal dignity and value. This underlying interpretation comes from the familiar, basic theological position in Genesis that both sexes were made in the image of God.After a cogent philosophical introduction to complementary differences by J. Budziszewski, this position is developed from theological, philosophical, and historical perspectives by Sr. Prudence Allen. Next Deborah Savage, building upon the writings of St. John Paul II, gives a strong theological basis for complementarity. This is followed by Elizabeth Lev's chapter presenting new and surprising art history evidence from the paintings of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel supporting the complementarity interpretation. A final chapter by Paul Vitz documents and summarizes the scientific evidence supporting sexual difference and complementarity in the disciplines of psychology and neuroscience. As a consequence of both the individual chapters and the integrated understanding they present The Complementarity of Women and Men is a significant contribution to the important, complex, contemporary debate about men, women, sex, and gender.

Atlas of Forensic and Criminal Psychology. 168 pp. 2022:3 (CRC Pr., US) <669-780>

ISBN 978-1-03-221698-0 paper ¥20,509.- (税込) GB£ 71.99 *
Originally published in Spanish in 2017 by Libreria Bosch, Barcelona, the Atlas of Forensic and Criminal Psychology is a one-of-kind book made available in English for the first time. This unique work is highly illustrated with full-color images, providing a medico-legal examination of forensic pathology as it relates to cases of forensic psychological interest. The book begins with a historical perspective and includes images of patients to familiarize the reader with symptoms, the hazard-risk criteria, lethality, and suicidal rescue-research that Dr. Tiffon has addressed in his previous publications. Chapters present photographic records of cases to deepen forensic, psychologist, and medico-legal professionals' insight into thoughts, behaviors, and mechanisms of self- and hetero-aggressiveness. Such cases illustrate the outcomes of various disorders manifested in individuals and victims; as such, they provide an understanding of the psychological-legal conclusions reached in such cases in order to adapt the legal and preventative measures for specific situations. Coverage includes affective, schizophrenic, and personality disorders as contributing elements in diagnostic judgments, noting the great difficulty such examples present to experts performing psychopathological evaluations after criminal, and often violent, events have occurred. Various psychopathological disorders are addressed as well as the technical treatment that should occur in each case from a psychological-forensic perspective.Features:* Presents a provocative look at various syndromes familiar to forensic psychologists, as applied to criminal cases and the pathology of suicide victims and homicide perpetrators * Combines the work of world-renowned expert contributors to examine the criminal, legal, and psychological facets of various diagnoses and case examples * Offers insight into the psychological state of suicide victims, considering their state of mind as a "psychological autopsy"In his previous books published in Spanish, Manual of Consulting in Psychology and Clinical, Legal, Legal, Criminal, and Forensic Psychopathology (2008), Manual of Professional Performance in Clinical, Criminal, and Forensic Psychopathology (2009), and the 4-volume Practical Criminological Atlas of Forensic Psychometry (2019-2020), Tiffon approached forensic psychology and psychopathology from a theoretical perspective. In the Atlas of Forensic and Criminal Psychology, his first book translated into English, Tiffon expands on these prior works, serving to provide a visual reference and guide to medical pathologists and consulting psychologists in cases of disorders in which psychopathological mutilation, injury, and self-injury occur.

Traditionally, alchemy has been understood as a precursor to the science of chemistry but from the vantage point of the human spirit, it is also a discipline that illuminates the human soul. This book explores the goal of alchemy from Jungian, psychological, and philosophical perspectives.Jung's Alchemical Philosophy: Psyche and the Mercurial Play of Image and Idea is a reflection on Jung's alchemical work and the importance of philosophy as a way of understanding alchemy and its contributions to Jung's psychology. By engaging these disciplines, Marlan opens new vistas on alchemy and the circular and ouroboric play of images and ideas, shedding light on the alchemical opus and the transformative processes of Jungian psychology. Divides in the history of alchemy and in the alchemical imagination are addressed as Marlan deepens the process by turning to a number of interpretations that illuminate both the enigma of the Philosophers' Stone and the ferment in the Jungian tradition. This book will be of interest to Jungian analysts and those who wish to explore the intersection of philosophy and psychology as it relates to alchemy.

This timely interdisciplinary book brings together a wide spectrum of theoretical concepts and their empirical applications in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, informing our understanding of the social and psychological bases of a global crisis. Written by an author team of psychologists and sociologists, the volume provides comprehensive coverage of phenomena such as fear, risk, judgement and decision making, threat and uncertainty, group identity and cohesion, social and institutional trust, and communication in the context of an international health emergency. The topics have been grouped into four main chapters, focusing on the individual, group, social, and communication perspectives of the issues affecting or being affected by the pandemic, based on over 740 classic and current references of peer-reviewed research and contextualized with an epidemiological perspective discussed in the introduction. The volume finishes with two special sections, with a chapter on cultural specificity of the social impact of pandemics, focusing specifically on both Islam and Hinduism, and a chapter on the cross-national differences in policy responses to the current health crisis. Providing not just a reference for academic research, but also short-term and long-term policy solutions based on successful strategies to combat adverse social, cognitive, and emotional consequences, this is the ideal resource for academics and policymakers interested in social and psychological determinants of individual reactions to pandemics, as well as in fields such as economics, management, politics, and medical care.

Kindred Spirits: One Animal Family. (Animal Voices / Animal Worlds) 264 pp. 2021:6 (U. Georgia Pr., US) <669-1759>
ISBN 978-0-8203-5957-1 paper ¥6,025.- (税込) US$ 27.95 *
In Kindred Spirits, Anne Benvenuti visits with individuals and groups working in animal conservation, rescue, and sanctuary programs around the world. We meet not only cats and dogs but also ravens, elephants, cheetahs, whales, farm and circus animals, monkeys, even bees. A psychologist and storyteller, Benvenuti focuses on moments of transformative contact between humans and other animals, portraying vividly the resulting ripples that change the lives of both animals and humans. Noting that we are all biologically members of one animal family, she expertly weaves emergent understandings of animal and human neurobiology, showing that the ways in which other animals feel and think are actually similar to humans. Love, grief, rage, sadness, curiosity, play: these are shared by us all, a key insight of affective neuroscience that informs Benvenuti's perceptions of human-animal relationships. She effortlessly drops clues to understanding human motivation and behavior into her narratives, and points to ways in which we all-other animals and humans alike-must come up with creative responses to problems such as climate change. As we travel with her to both backyard and far-flung locations, we experience again and again the surprising fact that other animals reach back to us, with curiosity, interest, even care. Benvenuti writes for the animal-loving public but also for anyone who loves a good story, or is interested in ecology, animal welfare, psychology, or philosophy.

Psychogeography usually refers to radical and artistic ways of walking or to a conflation of psychology with geography. In this unique work, the author makes arguments for considering psychogeography as a way to critique the contemporary world and to consider new ways of studying the interface of human beings in environments. The book begins by introducing and explaining the term psychogeography from a range of academic, activist, and artistic perspectives. Each chapter presents different approaches to doing psychogeography and there are arguments presented for why there is a need for a postpsychology. The author takes a creative and innovative approach to psychogeography by extending walking methods of research to include other forms of practice and research including playwriting and wargaming. The only book written on psychogeography from a psychological perspective, this book will appeal to researchers and students of psychology, geography, architecture, and cultural studies as well as artists, activists, and the public.

Koro: Clinical and Historical Developments of the Culturally Defined Genital Retraction Disorder. 518 pp. 2022:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <669-1761>
ISBN 978-3-030-87961-7 hard ¥28,244.- (税込) EUR 119.99
This book provides a definitive account of koro, a topic of long-standing interest in the field of cultural psychiatry in which the patient displays a fear of the genitals shrinking and retracting. Written by Professor A.N. Chowdhury, a leading expert in the field, it provides a comprehensive overview of the cultural, historical and clinical significance of the condition that includes both cutting-edge critique and an analysis of research and accounts from the previous 120 years published literature. The book begins by outlining the definition, etymology of the term, and clinical features of koro as a culture-bound syndrome, and contextualizes the concept with reference to its historical origins and local experience in Southeast Asia, and its subsequent widespread occurrence in South Asia. It also critically examines the concept of culture-bound disorder and the development of the terminology, such as cultural concepts of distress, which is the term that is currently used in the DSM-5. Subsequent chapters elaborate the cultural context of koro in Chinese and South Asian cultures, including cultural symbolic analysis of associations with animals (fox and turtle) and phallic imagery based on troubling self-perceived aspects of body image that is central to the concept. The second section of the book offers a comprehensive, global literature review, before addressing the current status and relevance of koro, clinically relevant questions of risk assessment and forensic issues, and research methodology. This landmark work will provide a unique resource for clinicians and researchers working in cultural psychiatry, cultural psychology, anthropology, medical sociology, social work and psychosexual medicine.

The Development of Memory in Infancy and Childhood. 3rd ed. 440 pp. 2022:5 (Psychology Pr., UK) <669-1762>
ISBN 978-0-367-86033-2 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

The Development of Memory in Infancy and Childhood provides a thorough update and expansion of the previous edition and offers new research on significant themes and ideas that have emerged in the past decade such as the cognitive neuroscience of memory development, autobiographical memory and infantile amnesia, and the cognitive and social factors that underlie memory for events. In this volume, Courage and Cowan bring together leading international experts to review the current state of the science of memory development in their own research areas. They note questions of theory and basic science addressed in their research, highlight the real-world applications of those findings, and propose an agenda for future research. The book also considers the implications of their work for the development of atypical children, specifically, how these new findings might be adapted to enrich the lives of those children and to inform and validate our current expectations of individual differences in the development of typical children. The first of three groups of chapters focuses on basic neurobiological, perceptual, and cognitive processes that underlie memory and its development (i.e., encoding, consolidation and storage, retrieval). The second group focuses primarily on the social, contextual, and cultural factors that enable, shape, and mediate these basic processes, while the rest of the chapters focus on practical applications of this knowledge to real-world settings and issues. The book provides a new look at memory development, including new topics such as spatial representation and spatial working, prospective memory, false memories, and memory and culture. This classic yet contemporary volume will appeal to senior undergraduate and graduate students of developmental and cognitive psychology, as well as to developmental psychologists who want a compendium of key topics in memory development.

Jung's Reception of Picasso and Abstract Art. (Research in Analytical Psychology and Jungian Studies) 160 pp. 2022:4 (Routledge, UK) <669-1765>
ISBN 978-1-032-12033-1 hard ¥34,188.- (税込) GB£ 120.00 *
This book explores the nature of Jung's understanding of modern art, in particular his reception to the work of Picasso and his striking prejudice shown in his controversial essay of 1932. Offering an important contribution towards understanding Jung's attitudes towards Picasso and modern art, the book addresses the impact that Jung's unwillingness to engage in a deeper exploration of modern artforms had on the development of his psychological ideas. It explores and uncovers the reasons for Jung's derogatory view of Picasso and abstract art more generally, revealing how Jung was unable to remain objective due to his own complex and equally fascinating relationship with art and the psychology of image making. The book argues that modern art parallels Jung's interests by embracing the spirit of experimentation and using new imagery to challenge creative conceptions, which makes Jung's attitudes towards modern art all the more surprising. Jung's Reception of Picasso and Abstract Art will be of great interest to researchers, academics and those interested in analytical psychology, Jungian studies, art history and modernism, aesthetics and psychoanalysis.

Phippen, Andy / Street, Louisa,
Online Resilience and Wellbeing in Young People: Representing the Youth Voice. (Palgrave Studies in Cyberpsychology) 125 pp. 2021:11 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <669-1776>
ISBN 978-3-030-88633-2 hard ¥14,120.- (税込) EUR 59.99
This book explores online resilience and safety from a new perspective, by drawing extensively upon the youth voice. While "online safety" as a concept has now existed for well over ten years, the majority of policy and narrative is driven by preventative and adultist views of ensuring safety from harm. Underpinned by extensive empirical work, this book argues that safety, or freedom from harm, is not an achievable goal and we should refocus upon harm reduction and risk mitigation. Fundamental to this argument is that the youth voice clearly states that they will not disclose, or ask adults for support, because they do not believe they will get help or worse, will be punished as a result of disclosure. The research shows that professionals often bring their own digital value biases into safeguarding decisions, and feel that they should be white knights to young people, rather than listening to them and supporting them in a non-judgemental way. The book will be of great value to researchers and students as well as practitioners, teachers and parents interested in digital resilience and safeguarding, internet security and youth online behaviour and wellbeing.

Gender Diversity and Sport: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Increasing Inclusivity. (Gender and Sexualities in Psychology) 216 pp. 2022:4 (Routledge, UK) <669-1382>
ISBN 978-0-367-50629-2 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
ISBN 978-0-367-50628-5 paper ¥10,538.- (税込) GB£ 36.99 *
This timely and urgent text presents cutting-edge research exploring the complexities of barriers to inclusive access to sport and physical activity, and discusses how sport, and society, can move forward beyond the gender binary, in both theory and practice.Sport is one of the most influential, powerful, and visible institutions upholding the gender binary, even as the number of people identifying as transgender and non-binary increases rapidly worldwide. With this rising visibility, societal pressure has been increasing for the equal acceptance of gender diverse people, but while gains have been made in many areas, the participation of intersex, trans and non-binary people in sport remains harshly contested. Bringing together a world-leading team of established and emerging scholars from the UK, USA, and Australia, this collection presents an interdisciplinary analysis of current issues related to the participation of gender diverse individuals in sport and physical activity. Engaging with psychological ideas around identity, prejudice and discrimination, and sports psychology and performance, authors examine evidence that the rules, regulations, and practices that surround physical activity participation - from elite sport to sport in schools, universities, and society at large - are grounded in heteronormative, cisgendered, and sexist practices which unfairly discriminate against gender diverse people. Also including analysis of personal accounts from non-binary and transgender athletes from a range of sports, this is fascinating and essential reading for education, health, and sports professionals who work with and support gender diverse children and adults, as well as academics and students in the fields of psychology, sport psychology, sociology, law, and sports science, and those participating in, and navigating, sport and physical activity spaces.

Lone-Actor Terrorism: An Integrated Framework. 392 pp. 2022:4 (Oxford U. Pr., US) <669-1012>
ISBN 978-0-19-092979-4 hard ¥25,872.- (税込) US$ 120.00 *
Lone-actor terrorism has unfortunately been on the rise in recent decades, causing major adverse societal effects in the United States and abroad. While lone-actor terrorists can be driven by a range of identifiable factors such as extremist views or availability of weapons, the process of becoming and identifying these individuals is deeply complicated. Lone-Actor Terrorism: An Integrated Framework outlines the societal causes and impacts of lone-actor terrorism from a multi-disciplinary, international perspective. Drawing together seasoned insights across clinical and forensic mental health, sociology, criminology, law, military and intelligence, and security, this volume explores patterns common to lone-actor terrorists across four major sections: historical and case examples, clinical aspects, non-clinical professional and allied perspectives, and assessment and potential approaches to reducing the risk of lone-actor terrorism. Contributors describe both individual clinical factors affecting lone-actors, including developmental aspects, mental health variables, psychoactive drugs, psychometrics and linguists, along with broader social factors such as propaganda and rhetoric, social media, and geographical considerations. This volume concludes with a review of the available threat and risk assessment tools applicable to lone-actor terrorism cases and provides guidance for professionals seeking to reduce risk. While there is no uniform approach to the concept of lone-actor terrorism, this edited volume provides a diverse yet authoritative overview for those interested in better understanding the threats of lone-actor terrorism and its professional response.
