Guenther, Katja, The Mirror and the Mind: A History of Self-Recognition in the Human Sciences. (Princeton Modern Knowledge) 312 pp. 2023:1 (Princeton U. Pr., US) <680-84>
ISBN 978-0-691-23725-1 hard ¥8,963.- (税込) US$ 39.95 *

How the classic mirror test served as a portal for scientists to explore questions of self-awarenessSince the late eighteenth century, scientists have placed subjects-humans, infants, animals, and robots-in front of mirrors in order to look for signs of self-recognition. Mirrors served as the possible means for answering the question: What makes us human? In The Mirror and the Mind, Katja Guenther traces the history of the mirror self-recognition test, exploring how researchers from a range of disciplines-psychoanalysis, psychiatry, developmental and animal psychology, cybernetics, anthropology, and neuroscience-came to read the peculiar behaviors elicited by mirrors. Investigating the ways mirrors could lead to both identification and misidentification, Guenther looks at how such experiments ultimately failed to determine human specificity. The mirror test was thrust into the limelight when Charles Darwin challenged the idea that language sets humans apart. Thereafter the mirror, previously a recurrent if marginal scientific tool, became dominant in attempts to demarcate humans from other animals. But because researchers could not rely on language to determine what their nonspeaking subjects were experiencing, they had to come up with significant innovations, including notation strategies, testing protocols, and the linking of scientific theories across disciplines. From the robotic tortoises of Grey Walter and the mark test of Beulah Amsterdam and Gordon Gallup, to anorexia research and mirror neurons, the mirror test offers a window into the emergence of such fields as biology, psychology, psychiatry, animal studies, cognitive science, and neuroscience. The Mirror and the Mind offers an intriguing history of experiments in self-awareness and the advancements of the human sciences across more than a century.

ISBN 978-3-495-49261-1 hard ¥11,911.- (税込) EUR 49.00

This book explores the motivations of offenders, methods of committing personal robbery and the group dynamics involved. The author discusses behavioural crime linkage as a method to help police forces identify serial offences, as well as how profiling has been used in robbery cases. The author concludes by summarising the policing tactics used to prevent and detect robbery, to show how understanding robbery can help in creating workable initiatives around this crime type.

James, William, Be Not Afraid of Life: In the Words of William James. Ed. by J. Kaag et al. 384 pp. 2023:1 (Princeton U. Pr., US) <680-58>
ISBN 978-0-691-24015-2 hard ¥6,719.- (税込) US$ 29.95 *

A compelling collection of the life-changing writings of William JamesWilliam James-psychologist, philosopher, and spiritual seeker-is one of those rare writers who can speak directly and powerfully to anyone about life's meaning and worth, and whose ideas change not only how people think but how they live. The thinker who helped found the philosophy of pragmatism and inspire Alcoholics Anonymous, James famously asked, "is life worth living?" Bringing together many of his best and most popular essays, talks, and other writings, this anthology presents James's answer to that and other existential questions, in his own unique manner-caring, humorous, eloquent, incisive, humble, and forever on the trail of the "ever not quite."Here we meet a James perfectly attuned to the concerns of today-one who argues for human freedom, articulates a healthy-minded psychology, urges us to explore the stream of consciousness, presents a new definition of truth based on its practical consequences, and never forecloses the possibility of mystical transcendence. Introduced by John Kaag and Jonathan van Belle, these compelling and accessible selections reveal why James is one of the great guides to the business of living.

Jung, C. G., Jung on Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises: Lectures Delivered at ETH Zurich. Volume 7: 1939-1940. Ed. by M. Liebscher. (Philemon Foundation Series) 288 pp. 2023:3 (Princeton U. Pr., US) <680-1318>

Jung's lectures on the psychology of Jesuit spiritual practice-unabridged in English for the first timeBetween 1933 and 1941, C. G. Jung delivered a series of public lectures at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. Intended for a general audience, these lectures addressed a broad range of topics, from yoga and meditation to dream analysis and the psychology of alchemy. Here for the first time are Jung's complete lectures on Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises, delivered in the winter of 1939-1940.These illuminating lectures are the culmination of Jung's investigation into traditional forms of meditation and their parallels to his psychotherapeutic method of active imagination. Jung presents Loyola's exercises as the prime example of a Christian practice comparable to yoga and Eastern meditation, and gives a psychological interpretation of the visions depicted in the saint's autobiographical writings. Offering a unique opportunity to encounter the brilliant psychologist as he shares his ideas with the general public, the lectures reflect Jung's increasingly positive engagement with Roman Catholicism, a development that would lead to his fruitful collaborations after the war with eminent Catholic theologians such as Victor White, Bruno de Jesus-Marie, and Hugo Rahner.Featuring an authoritative introduction by Martin Liebscher along with explanations of Jungian concepts and psychological terminology, this splendid book provides an invaluable window on the evolution of Jung's thought and a vital key to understanding his later work.

Little, Todd D. / Rioux, Charlie / Odejimi, O. A. et al., Parceling in Structural Equation Modeling: A Comprehensive Introduction for Developmental Scientists. (Elements in Research Methods for Developmental Science) 75 pp. 2022:9 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <680-1319>
ISBN 978-1-00-921164-2 paper ¥4,899.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *

Parceling is pre-modeling strategy to create fewer and more reliable indicators of constructs for use with latent variable models. Parceling is particularly useful for developmental scientists because longitudinal models can become quite complex and even intractable when measurement models of items are fit. In this Element the authors provide a detailed account of the advantages of using parcels, their potential pitfalls, as well as the techniques for creating them for conducting latent variable structural equation modeling (SEM) in the context of the developmental sciences. They finish with a review of the recent use of parcels in developmental journals. Although they focus on developmental applications of parceling, parceling is also highly applicable to any discipline that uses latent variable SEM.

Passmore, Graham / Prescott, Julie, Using an ISA Mobile App for Professional Development. 122 pp. 2022:4 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <680-1323>
ISBN 978-3-030-99070-1 hard ¥12,151.- (税込) EUR 49.99

Building on our prior ISA-based Palgrave pivot, the aims of the book are twofold. One, to showcase a newly developed App as a tool in the use of Identity Structure Analysis (ISA) for researchers interested in identity. Second, the book will focus on the use, of a counselling supervision ISA instrument in order to highlight the benefits of ISA for professional development (PD) for any profession. The idea is that any researcher interested in professional and or personal development would be able to use the proposed book to aid them in either a supervision style process of development or the more standard one-to-one annual/biannual approach to PD. Through using ISA in PD, the book and its attendant analyses will encourage discussion, facilitate openness, and highlight potential issues that may lead to burnout, mental health issues, leaving a profession or additional risks. That is, the book will be oriented to informing researchers as to the potential ISA, the App, and the supervision instrument hold for directing PD.

Marsilli-Vargas, Xochitl, Genres of Listening: An Ethnography of Psychoanalysis in Buenos Aires. 240 pp. 2022:9 (Duke U. Pr., US) <680-1040>
ISBN 978-1-4780-1591-8 hard ¥22,427.- (税込) US$ 99.95 *
ISBN 978-1-4780-1855-1 paper ¥5,822.- (税込) US$ 25.95 *

In Genres of Listening Xochitl Marsilli-Vargas explores a unique culture of listening and communicating in Buenos Aires. She traces how psychoanalytic listening circulates beyond the clinical setting to become a central element of social interaction and cultural production in the city that has the highest number of practicing psychologists and psychoanalysts in the world. Marsilli-Vargas develops the concept of genres of listening to demonstrate that hearers listen differently, depending on where, how, and to whom they are listening. In particular, she focuses on psychoanalytic listening as a specific genre. Portenos (citizens of Buenos Aires) have developed a "psychoanalytic ear" that emerges during conversational encounters in everyday interactions in which participants offer different interpretations of the hidden meaning the words carry. Marsilli-Vargas does not analyze these interpretations as impositions or interruptions but as productive exchanges. By outlining how psychoanalytic listening operates as a genre, Marsilli-Vargas opens up ways to imagine other modes of listening and forms of social interaction.
