Glannon, Walter,
The Ethics of Consciousness. (Elements in Bioethics and Neuroethics) 75 pp. 2022:7 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <681-441>
ISBN 978-1-00-907804-7 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *
This Element examines the main ethical aspects of consciousness It argues that consciousness is not intrinsically valuable but has value or disvalue for individuals depending on its phenomenology (what it is like to be aware) and content (what one is aware of). These two components of awareness shape normative judgments about how ordered, disordered, altered, restored, diminished and suppressed conscious states can benefit or harm individuals. They also influence moral judgments about whether intentionally causing these states is permissible or impermissible and how these states can affect behavior. After describing its neurobiological basis, this Element discusses ethical and legal issues in six categories of consciousness: phenomenal and access consciousness; intraoperative awareness; prolonged disorders of consciousness, dissociative disorders, the role of consciousness in determining death; and altering and suppressing awareness near the end of life.

Qualitative Interviewing: Conversational Knowledge Through Research Interviews. 2nd ed. 192 pp. 2022:11 (Oxford U. Pr., US) <681-5>
ISBN 978-0-19-764818-6 paper ¥11,426.- (税込) US$ 53.00 *
Qualitative interviewing has become one of the most common research methods across the human and social sciences, if not the most prevalent approach. Qualitative Interviewing, Second Edition help readers conduct, write, represent, understand, and critique qualitative interview research in its many forms as currently practiced. It discusses excellent exemplars of qualitative interview research. The book begins with a theoretically informed introduction to qualitative interviewing by presenting a variegated landscape of how conversations have been used for knowledge producing purposes. Particular attention is given to the complementary positions of experience focused interviewing (phenomenological positions) and language focused interviewing (discourse oriented positions), which concentrate on interview talk as reports (of the experiences of interviewees) and accounts (occasioned by the situation of interviewing) respectively. The second edition has a new chapter on conducting interviews in practice and is updated with new sections on research ethics and the relevance of small-scale studies in a world of "big data", many updated references, recent examples of interview studies, and reflections on similarities and differences between research interviews, journalism, and the arts.

There's No Such Thing as Creativity: How Plato and 20th Century Psychology Have Misled Us. (Elements in Creativity and Imagination) 75 pp. 2022:6 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <681-33>
ISBN 978-1-00-907354-7 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *
Most people (including creativity researchers) act as if they believe that creativity is not simply a useful category or label but a real thing with its own essence (just as Plato would argue that an ideal triangle has an essence that is shared with all actual triangles). Most people (including creativity researchers) also believe that there is a set of general creativity-relevant skills that can be applied to most problems in ways that will lead to more creative outcomes. Creativity research now calls these beliefs into question. A domain-general misunderstanding of the nature of creativity-relevant skills and the equally mistaken belief that creativity exists independently of actual creative things and ideas have together hindered creativity theory, research, assessment, and training. A more domain-specific and nominalist understanding of creativity will free creativity researchers to make progress in areas where it is currently stymied.

This book focuses on a span of statistical topics relevant to researchers who seek to conduct person-specific analysis of human data. Our purpose is to provide one consolidated resource that includes techniques from disciplines such as engineering, physics, statistics, and quantitative psychology and outlines their application to data often seen in human research. The book balances mathematical concepts with information needed for using these statistical approaches in applied settings, such as interpretative caveats and issues to consider when selecting an approach. The statistical topics covered here include foundational material as well as state-of-the-art methods. These analytic approaches can be applied to a range of data types such as psychophysiological, self-report, and passively collected measures such as those obtained from smartphones. We provide examples using varied data sources including functional MRI (fMRI), daily diary, and ecological momentary assessment data.Features:Description of time series, measurement, model building, and network methods for person-specific analysisDiscussion of the statistical methods in the context of human researchEmpirical and simulated data examples used throughout the bookR code for analyses and recorded lectures for each chapter available at the book website: https://www.personspecific.com/ Across various disciplines of human study, researchers are increasingly seeking to conduct person-specific analysis. This book provides comprehensive information, so no prior knowledge of these methods is required. We aim to reach active researchers who already have some understanding of basic statistical testing. Our book provides a comprehensive resource for those who are just beginning to learn about person-specific analysis as well as those who already conduct such analysis but seek to further deepen their knowledge and learn new tools.

This Element addresses the factors that influence children's accuracy in reporting on events and draws implications for children's ability to serve as reliable eyewitnesses. The following topics are covered: short- and long-term memory for event details; memory for stressful events; memory for the temporal order of events; memory for the spatial location of events; the ways poorly worded questions or intervening events interfere with memory; and individual differences in language development, understanding right from wrong and emotions, and cognitive processes. In addition, this Element considers how potential jurors perceive children as eyewitnesses and how the findings of the research on children's event memory inform best practices for interviewing children.

Beattie, Geoffrey,
Doubt: A Psychological Exploration. 200 pp. 2022:11 (Routledge, UK) <681-1213>

ISBN 978-1-03-225204-9 paper ¥7,404.- (税込) GB£ 25.99 *
Blending the latest academic research with case studies of famous figures, this highly insightful book presents 'doubt' as a central concept for psychology. It is a concept which has been oddly neglected in the past, despite its ubiquitous nature and far-reaching influence. Exploring everything from self-doubt and impostor syndrome to the weaponisation of doubt with respect to climate change and the marketing of cigarettes, bestselling author Geoffrey Beattie navigates readers through the various ways doubt can start and develop, changing the individual in the process. Written in Beattie's distinctive and engaging style, Doubt takes the reader into the lives of transformational thinkers, artists, scientists and writers to explore how and why doubt was crucial in their lives and how the likes of Kafka, Jung, Picasso and Turing succumbed to doubt or learned to control it. Beattie argues that doubt is central to the self; it can be either a safeguarding mechanism or a distraction, rational or irrational, systematic or random, healthy or pathological, productive or non-productive. The book helps readers to recognise how doubt may have been operating in their own lives and to identify how and when it has been used against us - for example, to prevent climate action - and at what personal and societal cost.Presenting a compelling case for why doubt cannot be ignored, this book is of major interest to academics from a wide range of disciplines, including social and cognitive psychology, clinical and counselling psychology, sport psychology, sociology, business studies, politics, art and literature, as well as the general public, who may well see something of themselves in its pages.

Fivush, Robyn,
Autobiographical Memory and Narrative in Childhood. (Elements in Child Development) 75 pp. 2022:9 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <681-1215>
ISBN 978-1-00-908731-5 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *
This Element delineates how the narrative expression of autobiographical memory develops through everyday interactions that frame the forms and functions of autobiographical remembering. Narratives are both outward and inward facing, providing the interface between how we perceive the world and how we perceive ourselves. Thus narratives are the pivot point where self and culture meet. To make this argument, the author brings together literature from multiple perspectives, including cognitive, personality, evolutionary, cultural, and developmental psychology. To fully understand autobiographical memory, it must be understood how it functions in the context of lives lived in complex sociocultural contexts.

Intercultural Learning through Study Abroad. (Elements in Psychology and Culture) 75 pp. 2022:5 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <681-1218>
ISBN 978-1-00-912696-0 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *
Over the past three decades, the population of international students throughout the world has steadily increased. Although university students choose to study in locations other than their home country for a variety of reasons, including professional development and disciplinary training, nearly all education abroad programs have intercultural learning as a central goal. In this Element, perspectives derived from cross-cultural psychological research are applied to an investigation of the effectiveness of study abroad as a mechanism for intercultural learning. Effectiveness is broadly defined and includes not only overall favorable program outcomes, such as gains in intercultural skills, knowledge, attitudes, and awareness, but also a recognition that study abroad experiences and outcomes may vary depending upon participants' diverse and intersectional identities. Best practices for facilitating intercultural learning through study abroad are identified and strategies are outlined for addressing the methodological challenges of research in this area.

Pierri, Maria,
Occultism and the Origins of Psychoanalysis' and 'Sigmund Freud and The Forsyth Case'. 2 vols. (The History of Psychoanalysis Series) 656 pp. 2022:11 (Routledge, UK) <681-1225>
ISBN 978-1-03-238106-0 hard ¥34,188.- (税込) GB£ 120.00
Sigmund Freud and The Forsyth Case uses newly discovered primary sources to investigate one of Sigmund Freud's most mysterious clinical experiences, the Forsyth case. Maria Pierri begins with a preliminary illustration of the case, its historical context, and how it connects to Freud's interests in 'thought-transmission', or telepathy. Sigmund Freud and The Forsyth Case details Pierri's attempts to recover the lost original case notes, which are published here for the first time, to identify the patient involved and to set the case into the broader frame of Freud's work. The book also explores Freud's further investigations into thought-transmission, focusing around a meeting of the Secret Committee in October 1919 and his clinical work with his own daughter Anna. Occultism and the Origins of Psychoanalysis traces the origins of key psychoanalytic ideas back to their roots in hypnosis and the occult. Maria Pierri follows Sigmund Freud's early interest in 'thought transmission', now known as telepathy. Freud's private investigations led to discussions with other leading figures, including Sandor Ferenczi, with whom he held a 'dialogue of the unconsciouses', and Carl Jung. Freud and Ferenczi's work assessed how fortune tellers could read the past from a client, inspiring their investigations into countertransference, the analytic relationship, unconscious communication and mother-infant relationality. Pierri clearly links modern psychoanalytic practice with Freud's interests in the occult using primary sources, some of which have never before been published in English. These books will be essential reading for psychoanalysts in practice and in training, as well as academics and scholars of psychoanalytic studies, Freudian ideas, psychoanalytic theory, the occult, spirituality and the history of psychology.

The Correspondence of Victoria Ocampo, Count Keyserling and C. G. Jung: Writing to the Woman Who Was Everything. 296 pp. 2022:11 (Routledge, UK) <681-1230>

The Correspondence of Victoria Ocampo, Count Keyserling and C. G. Jung centres on two pivotal meetings: Victoria Ocampo and Hermann von Keyserling's in 1929, and Ocampo and Carl Gustav Jung's in 1934. The first section of the book chronicles these encounters, which proved to be key moments in the lives of the players and had repercussions both private and public. The later sections consist of the correspondence and other writings that preceded and followed these meetings, translated from French, German, and Spanish, much of it for the first time. Jung framed Keyserling's account of the encounter with Ocampo as "one of the most beautiful animus-anima stories I have ever heard." But that story, told here from the three points of view of the pioneering Argentine intellectual, the Baltic German philosopher, and the Swiss founder of analytical psychology, can also be read in the contexts of early-twentieth-century feminism and of gender and sexual politics, of the colonizing European gaze on the Americas, of Argentina and its cultural complexes, of typological impasses, and of Eros and the power of words. The fraught relationships and power dynamics among three influential figures will be of interest to analytical psychologists, historians of psychological disciplines and of South America, as well as general readers.

ISBN 978-1-03-236659-3 hard ¥35,612.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *
This book introduces Unitary Developmental Theory (UDT) to the field of organization development. The second of two volumes, it introduces the UDT model and examines its application to organization development and change management. The book presents UDT comprising seven developmental levels, showing how using its methodical progression can help to avoid issues such as unsustainable growth and change failure while examining how the model improves collaboration, digital transformation, change management and team development. It shows how the model clinically transforms concepts such as culture which is often cited as the cause of failure for change, re-defining it as habituated maturation stage and simplifying culture change accordingly. This book is designed to accompany Volume 1 which details the psychology of the model and its equal applicability to mental-health recovery.Showing how UDT can be used as an overarching model to optimize organization development, this book will be of great interest to researchers, scholars and postgraduate students from the fields of organizational psychology, organization development and change management.

Developmental Psychology and Young Children's Religious Education. 140 pp. 2022:10 (Routledge, UK) <681-1165>

Developmental Psychology and Young Children's Religious Education sets out to identify the conceptual pre-requisites for young children's religious education learning and clearly highlights the challenges that children and their teachers encounter in the RE educational process. Based on a study with 431 children aged 5 to 7 years from different schools, faith and non-faith, and 47 teachers from the same schools as the children, this book offers an insightful look into younger children's religious education, providing statistical evidence to dismantle the belief that young children lack the ability to conceptualise God in abstract terms. The information obtained from these children and their teachers reveals a major discrepancy between the teachers' perceptions of young children's conceptual abilities for RE learning, on the one hand, and children's actual abilities revealed in their responses throughout the study, on the other. Based on the evidence described in the volume, Petrovich argues that teacher-training courses for primary RE need to be designed to include a substantial component of contemporary developmental research that is of direct relevance to children's conceptual abilities and understanding of abstract concepts.Developmental Psychology and Young Children's Religious Education is essential reading for students and researchers in developmental psychology, religious education, teacher education, education studies and cultural anthropology.
