Visciola, Michele, Sustainable Innovation: Thinking as Behavioral Scientists, Acting as Designers. 238 pp. 2022:12 (Springer, GW) <691-379>
ISBN 978-3-031-18750-6 hard ¥26,737.- (税込) EUR 109.99

When working together, designers, life, human and social behavioral scientists can add value, which promotes behavioral changes to the advantage of sustainable models in all fields. This volume presents a guide on how to set up sustainable innovation programs, as well as ideas on how to integrate multidisciplinary teams into innovation projects. Moreover, this book offers students a synthesis of non-academic thinking on the relationship between design and behavioral science.

Nanay, Bence, Mental Imagery: Philosophy, Psychology, Neuroscience. 336 pp. 2023:3 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <691-50>
ISBN 978-0-19-880950-0 hard ¥20,750.- (税込) GB£ 72.00 *

Mental Imagery: Philosophy, Psychology, Neuroscience is about mental imagery and the important work it does in our mental life. It plays a crucial role in the vast majority of our perceptual episodes. It also helps us understand many of the most puzzling features of perception (like the way it is influenced in a top-down manner and the way different sense-modalities interact). But mental imagery also plays a very important role in emotions, action execution, and even in our desires. In sum, there are very few mental phenomena that mental imagery doesn't show up in--in some way or other. The hope is that if we understand what mental imagery is, how it works and how it is related to other mental phenomena, we can make real progress on a number of important questions about the mind. This book is written for an interdisciplinary audience. As it aims to combine philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience to understand mental imagery, the author has not presupposed any prior knowledge in any of these disciplines, so any reader can follow the arguments.

Weimer, Walter B., Epistemology of the Human Sciences: Restoring an Evolutionary Approach to Biology, Economics, Psychology and Philosophy. (Palgrave Studies in Classical Liberalism) 410 pp. 2022:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <691-56>
ISBN 978-3-031-17172-7 hard ¥31,599.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book argues for evolutionary epistemology and distinguishing functionality from physicality in the social sciences. It explores the implications for this approach to understanding in biology, economics, psychology and political science. Presenting a comprehensive overview of philosophical topics in the social sciences, the book emphasizes how all human cognition and behavior is characterized by functionality and complexity, and thus cannot be explained by the point predictions and exact laws found in the physical sciences. Realms of functional complexity - such as the market order in economics, the social rules of conduct, and the human CNS - require a focus on explanations of the principles involved rather than predicting exact outcomes. This requires study of the historical context to understand behavior and cognition. This approach notes that functional complexity is central to classical liberal ideas such as division of labour and knowledge, and how this is a far more powerfuland adequate account of social organization than central planning. Through comparison of these approaches, as well as its interdisciplinary scope, this book will interest both academics and students in philosophy, biology, economics, psychology and all other social sciences.

Bishop, Paul, Reading Plato through Jung: Why must the Third become the Fourth? 165 pp. 2022:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <691-24>
ISBN 978-3-031-16811-6 hard ¥10,936.- (税込) EUR 44.99

This book examines the Jungian imperative that the Third must become the Fourth through the lens of Carl Jung's complex reception of Plato. While in psychoanalytic discourse the Third is typically viewed as an agent that brings about healing, the author highlights that, in the case of Jung, an early emphasis on the Third as the "transcendent function" gave way to an increasing insistence on the importance of the Fourth. And yet, he asks, why must "the Third become the Fourth"? Paul Bishop begins with a survey of work on Jung's relation to Plato, before turning to Jung's readings of the Timaeus and Black Books, as well as Goethe's Faust II and Nietzsche's Zarathustra. He proceeds to unpick Jung's statements on the Third and the Fourth though a compelling analysis of how Jung draws upon religious and alchemical traditions, Pythagorean numerology, his own dream-like experiences and Plato's cosmology. This book will appeal to practitioners and to scholars working in the history of ideas, psychoanalysis, philosophy, and psychoanalytic theory.

ISBN 978-3-031-19300-2 hard ¥31,599.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book examines the links between work wage and wellbeing, drawing on the new specialism of Humanitarian Work Psychology and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Humanitarian work psychology foregrounds people before profit, not wages before people. It resonates with the SDGs through the Decent Work Agenda, a policy program that stresses a number of humanitarian concerns: standards and rights at work, employment creation and enterprise development, social protection and social dialogue. These standards and forms of dialogue, from the living wage standard to new diplomacies for inclusive policy dialogue, appear and re-appear throughout the following chapters and sections in the book. The book synthesizes job characteristics models and psychology of working approaches with job evaluation techniques, poverty trap theory, diminishing marginal returns, work justice theory, the social psychology of equality and inequality, and a range of literatures on wellbeing that crisscross the social sciences.

McKinley, Catherine E., Understanding Indigenous Gender Relations and Violence: Becoming Gender AWAke. 378 pp. 2022:11 (Springer, GW) <691-1086>
ISBN 978-3-031-18582-3 hard ¥36,461.- (税込) EUR 149.99

This book focuses on the inequities that are persistently and disproportionately severe for Indigenous peoples. Gender and racial based inequities span from the home life to Indigenous women's wellness-including physical, mental, and social health. The conundrum of how and why Indigenous women-many of whom historically held respected and even held sacred status in many matrilineal and female-centered communities-now experience the highest rates of gendered based violence is focal to this work. Unlike Western European and colonial contexts, Indigenous societies tended to be organized in fundamentally distinct ways that were woman-centered and where gender roles and values were reportedly more egalitarian, fluid, flexible, inclusive, complementary, and harmonious. Understanding how Indigenous gender relations were targeted as a tool of patriarchal settler colonization and how this relates to women more broadly can be a key to unlocking gender liberation-a catalyst for readers tobecome 'gender AWAke.' Living gender AWAke encompasses living in alignment with agility (AWA) with clear awareness of how gender and other sociostructural factors affect daily life, as well as how to navigate such factors. To live in alignment, is to live from ones' center and in accordance with one's authentic self, with agility, by nimbly responding to life's constantly shifting situations. This empirically grounded work extends and deepens the Indigenist framework of historical oppression, resilience, and transcendence (FHORT) by delving deep into the resilience, transcendence, and wellness components of FHORT while centering gender. Understanding the changing gender roles for Indigenous peoples over time fosters decolonization more broadly by enabling greater understanding of how sexism and misogyny hurt people across personal and political spheres. This understanding can foster the process of becoming gender AWAke by identifying and dismantling of sexism and by becoming decolonized from prescriptive gender roles that inhibit living in alignment with one's true or authentic self. Readers will gain:a research-based approach linking historical oppression, gender-based inequities, and violence against Indigenous womenunderstanding of how patriarchal colonialism undermines all genders a tool to dismantle sexism more broadlypathways to become Gender AWAke through the understanding of Indigenous women's resilience and transcendence

ISBN 978-3-031-19188-6 hard ¥10,936.- (税込) EUR 44.99

This book takes an empirically grounded perspective on research in values, intimacy and sexuality, among other topics in psychology, to highlight the importance of searching for human subjectivity in its diversity, plurality and self-generativity. The author conducts an in-depth discussion on the methodological and epistemological issues enabling the study of subjectivity, and argues that in order to improve the contribution of psychology to human knowledge, a study of subjectivity must be at the forefront. This book presents a critical reflection of the author's decades-long research within psychology to argue for a significant paradigm shift in the conception and execution of psychological research: a shift to "second order psychology".

Harley, Dave, Mindfulness in a Digital World. (Palgrave Studies in Cyberpsychology) 101 pp. 2022:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <691-1201>
ISBN 978-3-031-19406-1 hard ¥9,720.- (税込) EUR 39.99

Using a lens of mindfulness, this book explores how digital dependencies can displace attention and undermine attentional control, leading to experiences of stress and mindless involvement with digital technology. Using qualitative interviews with teachers and students of mindfulness programmes, the book explores the challenges and opportunities for reconciling digital interactions with mindful practice. A phenomenological analysis of participants' digital experiences shows three different imperatives (relating to digital capabilities, hyper-reality and algorithms), that can drive unconscious forms of interaction and encourage a delegation of attentional control that draws users away from the present moment. The book concludes by exploring the implications of these (extra-conscious) imperatives for understanding digital addiction. It also provides a set of guidelines for a digital approach to mindfulness practice that can encourage beneficial relationships with digital technology into the future.

Henriques, Gregg, A New Synthesis for Solving the Problem of Psychology: Addressing the Enlightenment Gap. (Palgrave Studies in the Theory and History of Psychology) 522 pp. 2022:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <691-1202>
ISBN 978-3-031-18492-5 hard ¥31,599.- (税込) EUR 129.99

In this incisive analysis of academic psychology, Gregg Henriques examines the fragmented nature of the discipline and explains why the field has had enormous difficulty specifying its subject matter and how this has limited its ability to advance our knowledge of the human condition. He traces the origins of the problem of psychology to a deep and profound gap in our knowledge systems that emerged in the context of the scientific Enlightenment. To address this problem, this book introduces a new vision for scientific psychology called mental behaviorism. The approach is anchored to a comprehensive metapsychological framework that integrates insights from physics and cosmic evolution, neuroscience, the cognitive and behavioral sciences, developmental and complex adaptive systems theory, attachment theory, phenomenology, and social constructionist perspectives and is well grounded in the philosophy of science. Building on more than twenty years of work in theoreticalpsychology and drawing on a wide range of literature, Professor Henriques shows how this new approach to scientific knowledge fills in the gaps of our current understanding of psychology and can allow us to develop a more holistic and sophisticated way to understand animal and human mental behavioral patterns. This work will especially appeal to students and scholars of general psychology and theoretical psychology, as well as to historians and philosophers of science.

Nonrational Logic in Contemporary Society explores modern examples of beliefs that defy logic but nevertheless are enthusiastically embraced by legions of contemporary people living in technologically advanced societies. The appeal of nonrational logic is based upon C.G. Jung's ideas regarding archetypes, considered to be unconscious thought and behavioural patterns universal to all of humanity and expressed in dreams, art, religion, and reports of supernatural and paranormal experiences such as the belief in UFOs, conspiracy theories associated with child sacrifice and devil worship, lizard people who secretly rule the world, and internet demons whom many insist are real. C.G. Jung insisted that archetypal reality must be acknowledged for what it is: expressions of universal truths about the human condition. Nonrational Logic includes a multitude of examples from world folklore and reports of traditional customs from around the world collected in the multivolume anthropological classic, The Golden Bough, by James Frazer, comparing these traditional reports with contemporary ones to underscore the human psyche's obsessive desire to embrace the fantastic, the extraordinary, and the unbelievable.Nonrational Logic in Contemporary Society is important reading for analytical psychologists, Jungian psychotherapists, and other professionals as well as the general public seeking to understand how prevalent nonrational thinking is in modern societies and how it reflects traditional expressions.

Recent research has indicated that Relational Frame Theory may form the cornerstone of language and intelligence and this textbook integrates this information into an easily digestible format, considering the importance of each relational frame from coordination to analogy. Relational Frame Theory provides a potentially useful framework for teaching language and academic skills and the current textbook provides some examples of how to do this and offers some considerations for future research in this area. This book makes Relational Frame Theory easy to understand and, unlike previous books, assumes no prior knowledge of the theory amongst readers and clarifies some of the jargon used withinthis body of work. This book provides the most up-to-date outline of previous work within Relational Frame Theory and gives an overview of how this theory could be applied within psychology. To date, no previous book has attempted to integrate research, application and an easy-to-understand overview of the theory together - this book aims to integrate all of these aspects into one easily comprehensible guide. The current textbook is aimed towards graduate students and practitioners of applied behavior analysis. Given the proposed changes to the Behavior Analysis Certification Board which will focus more on Relational Frame Theory than in the past, a book of this nature will be helpful for those pursuing certification and may also be helpful for use within the applied field.

Severson, Eric R. / Krycka, Kevin C. (eds.), The Psychology and Philosophy of Eugene Gendlin: Making Sense of Contemporary Experience. (Psychology and the Other) 280 pp. 2023:4 (Routledge, UK) <691-1214>
ISBN 978-1-03-228405-7 hard ¥34,584.- (税込) GB£ 120.00 *
ISBN 978-1-03-228004-2 paper ¥8,642.- (税込) GB£ 29.99 *

This book brings together a collection of essays written by scholars inspired by Eugene Gendlin's work, particularly those interested in thinking with and beyond Gendlin for the sake of a global community facing significant crises. The contributors take inspiration from Gendlin's philosophy of the implicit, and his theoretical approach to psychology. The essays engage with Gendlin's ideas for our era, including critiques and corrections as well as extrapolations of his work. Gendlin himself worried that knowing about a problem is too often conflated with actions that might lead to change; the essays in this book point to a form of understanding that is activated, an embodied and immediate way of thinking about today's problems. Throughout the volume, the contributors creatively engage with Gendlin's work and its applicability to the complex, pressing crises of our time: the Covid-19 pandemic, environmental/climate issues, racism, sexism, economic inequality, and other factors threatening human persons and communities. Gendlin's theoretical approach to psychology is naturally interdisciplinary, making this book an essential read for anyone interested in moving to the boundaries where psychology meets philosophy, theology, art, environmental studies, science, technology, and much more.

Smorti, Andrea, The Role of Unexpected Events in Stories: J. Bruner's and C. Feldman's Florentine Seminar. (SpringerBriefs in Psychology and Cultural Developmental Science) 135 pp. 2022:11 (Springer, GW) <691-1215>
ISBN 978-3-031-19336-1 paper ¥12,151.- (税込) EUR 49.99

This book stems primarily from the intention to make public the seminar entitled "Narratives and Cultural Psychology" held by J. Bruner and C. Feldman in May 2000 in Florence. This seminar represents the point of view of these two authors, at an important moment in their scientific and human careers, on two themes: narratives and interpretative communities. The central concept on which this book works is the Aristotelian concept of peripeteia which, born in the world of art, is developed by Bruner in the field of cognitive and cultural psychology and by Feldman in the concept of interpretative community. Thus the first purpose of this book is to analyze the role and usefulness of this concept in the study of the world of stories and cultureThe second aim of this book is to explain, clarify and comment on the concept, the theoretical assumptions and the key words used by the two authors, while also exploring the issues addressed. In this way, the author wantedto reflect on what contribution this seminar offers today to the theme of narratives and cultural psychology and what the future prospects might be.This book is aimed at students and scholars interested in exploring the role that stories play in human culture.

There is also a "handy hints" feature, which includes advice from students about aspects of the project. In addition, "Future focus" boxes identify links between students' research project experience and their future plans. Wilcox, John, Human Judgment: How Accurate Is It, and How Can It Get Better? (SpringerBriefs in Psychology) 154 pp. 2022:12 (Springer, GW) <691-1225>
ISBN 978-3-031-19204-3 paper ¥12,151.- (税込) EUR 49.99

We humans make judgments about a staggering variety of topics. These include which medical condition is the correct diagnosis for your symptoms, whether a particular defendant is guilty of some crime or whether a particular political candidate will win an election-to name a few of countless examples. But how accurate are the judgments we all make, and how can they get better? This book synthesizes interdisciplinary research about these questions into one volume. In doing so, it uniquely draws on insights from fields as diverse as medicine, political judgment, cross-cultural psychology, evolutionary history and the heuristics and biases research program. Consequently, the book also enables readers concerned with judgmental accuracy in one field to benefit from the insights in others. Moreover, the author introduces an emerging field of research: empirical epistemology or normative cognitive science. The book lastly articulates a set of recommendations-recommendations aiming to improve our judgment, our decision-making and ultimately our lives.
