This book draws together a group of contemporary voices in terrapsychology to explore lived topics, such as ecotransference encountered with sacred place, alternative mapping and expressions of solidarities with sacred sites, place dreaming, locianalysis, trans-species encounters, deep genealogy, terraplomacy and Hermeticism. The chapters focus on praxis, demonstrating how each author's relationship with the more-than-human world has been reenchanted, revealing, remembering and co-creating relationships and community for life to flourish. Religious Hatred and Human Conflict: Psychodynamic Approaches to Insight and Intervention. 232 pp. 2023:9 (Routledge, UK) <699-85>

ISBN 978-1-03-250050-8 paper ¥10,253.- (税込) GB£ 35.99 *
Religious Hatred and Human Conflict focuses the lens of psychodynamic psychology on a phenomenon that often confounds conventional thinking - the intensity of conflict with religious or quasi-religious dimensions. The book highlights six dimensions of religion: identity, doctrine and practice, emotion and experience, mythology, sacred values and power and control, exploring how these can give rise to religious hatred and lead to marginalisation, persecution and even genocide. It also explores reasons for the evolution of religion and religious hatred, and their relationship with human behaviour through contemporary issues such as fundamentalism, martyrdom, clerical narcissism and apocalyptic belief. Acland examines how religious hatred and conflict may be transcended by facilitating processes of dialogue and diapraxis which enable a systematic understanding of prejudices and projections. Last, it offers practical methods and strategies for helping individuals and communities grow beyond the constraints of religious hatred, treating religious hatred as a psycho-spiritual problem that requires self-understanding.Identifying the implications for professionals in conflict resolution and mediation, politicians, community leaders, diplomats and anyone working to prevent or reduce conflict where religious belief is a factor, this book sets out how those tasked with intervening can respond to the challenges involved. It will also be highly relevant reading for students and researchers of psychology and religious studies.

Independent Women in British Psychoanalysis celebrates the lives and work of female psychoanalysts whose significant contributions to the Independent Tradition have hitherto been overshadowed by their male counterparts. The contributors in this volume look at seven female psychoanalysts who broke new ground with their contributions to theory and practice: Ella Freemen Sharpe, Marjorie Brierley, Paula Heimann, Marion Milner, Enid Balint, Nina Coltart and Pearl King. The chapters tell the individual stories of these psychoanalysts alongside their theories, showing how their personal lives embody and illustrate the essential universal developmental task of becoming oneself and finding one's own voice. The themes across the chapters include infant and child development with (m)other, trauma, constructive use of aggression, creativity, a theory of clinical technique, and independence of mind in a social world. This book will be of interest and relevance to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, developmental psychologists, sociologists, group analysts and historians of psychoanalysis, as well as those interested in feminism and women's position in society.

The Oxford Handbook of Evolution and the Emotions. (Oxford Library of Psychology) 1344 pp. 2023:9 (Oxford U. Pr., US) <699-1068>
ISBN 978-0-19-754475-4 hard ¥53,900.- (税込) US$ 250.00 *
The last 20 years have witnessed tremendous growth in theoretical and empirical work on emotions, including groundbreaking work on anger, disgust, pride, shame, sexual jealousy, romantic love, and more. Such work has demonstrated that emotions pervade nearly all aspects of psychological life, and that emotions are key to survival and reproduction and are therefore prime targets of natural selection. Emotions have also been implicated in a variety of psychological disorders, from the obvious (depression, anxiety) to the much less so (schizoid personality disorder, borderline personality disorder). In The Oxford Handbook of Evolution and the Emotions, Laith Al-Shawaf and Todd K. Shackelford have gathered a group of leading scholars in the field to present a centralized resource for researchers and students wishing to understand emotions from an evolutionary perspective. Together, the chapters provide a comprehensive overview of the literature, with a special focus on 1) conceptual foundations of evolutionary approaches to the emotions, 2) specific emotions, such as love, jealousy, anger, pride, disgust, shame, and others, 3) the importance of emotions in daily life, and 4) emotion disorders. The volume consists of four parts; the first part covers conceptual foundations of evolutionary approaches to the emotions (Evolution and the Emotions: Conceptual Foundations). The second part consists of specific emotions (Evolutionary Approaches to Specific Emotions). The third part focuses on the role of emotions in daily life, including spheres such as friendship, romantic relationships, morality, and politics (Evolutionary Approaches to Emotions in Daily Life). The fourth and final part consists of chapters on distinct emotion disorders (Evolutionary Approaches to Emotion Disorders). Comprehensive and integrative in nature, this Handbook is as an essential resource for students and scholars from a diversity of fields wishing to build upon our theoretical and empirical understanding of the emotions.

Lacan, Kris and the Psychoanalytic Legacy: The Brain Eater. 120 pp. 2023:8 (Routledge, UK) <699-1069>
ISBN 978-1-032-48235-4 hard ¥31,339.- (税込) GB£ 110.00 *
ISBN 978-1-032-48233-0 paper ¥7,973.- (税込) GB£ 27.99 *
Lacan, Kris and the Psychoanalytic Legacy: The Brain Eater examines the case of a scholar which was commented on by three leading psychoanalysts of the 20th century: Melitta Schmideberg, Ernst Kris, and Jacques Lacan. Sergio Benvenuto unpicks the complex case history of the patient he calls "Professor Brain", a man who struggled to publish his research because of his fixation on plagiarism, and who has never been identified. Benvenuto reconstructs the case through the first-hand accounts of the patient's analysts and Lacan and sets it in the context of mid-century psychoanalytic debate. As we progress through the patient's story, Benvenuto explains Lacan's theories as they apply to the case: the "foreclosure" of orality; obsessional neurosis; mental anorexia; and, above all, the reasons for his opposition to Ego psychology, of which Kris was one of the most important representatives. This book will be of great interest to psychoanalysts in practice and in training, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. It will also be of interest to academics and scholars of philosophy, the history of psychoanalysis, literature, and cultural studies.

Holding Wrongdoers Responsible: On the Complexities of Blame and Forgiveness. 254 pp. 2021:12 (Routledge, UK) * paper 2023 <699-1070>
ISBN 978-1-03-213945-6 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
ISBN 978-1-03-213947-0 paper ¥11,392.- (税込) GB£ 39.99 *
Holding Wrongdoers Responsible contests a number of widely accepted claims about blame and forgiveness that are insufficiently examined in the philosophical literature, and their relationship to each other. These claims are: i Anger is the most fitting kind of blame for those who are guilty of wrongdoing.ii Culpable wrongdoers should be blamed for what they have done.iii Forgiving consists of renouncing blame and blame feelings, especially angry ones.iv Forgiving is a kind and compassionate act for which a wrongdoer should be grateful. Against (i), the book argues that there are a number of reasons why we should be skeptical about the singular importance given to anger in this connection; against (ii), that blame is just one possible response to wrongdoing and, like other responses, has to be evaluated in relation to its purposes and the available alternatives; against (iii), that the continuation of blame after forgiveness is neither conceptually nor morally ruled out; and against (iv), that the image of forgiveness as benevolent and gift-like belies its dark side. By contesting these claims, the book reveals some of the moral and psychological complexities of these phenomena.

The purpose of this book is to clarify the function of the symbol and its place at the juncture of psychoanalysis and other social sciences, where the singular and the collective intersect and whose laws are identical. The debate between Freud and Jung about the symbol is well known; by examining the points of contradiction between their respective approaches, this book seeks to place them in fruitful tension, rather than categorical opposition and explore their similarities and differences. In later chapters, the author further analyses the function of the symbol in relation to the topics of myth, anthropology and dreams. This thoughtful book will appeal to those interested and involved in analytical psychology and psychoanalysis, as well as psychiatrists and psychologists.

Psychoanalytic Approaches to Forgiveness and Mental Health considers the role of forgiveness in mental life, concerning both forgiving and being forgiven. Each chapter addresses concepts including superego, repetition compulsion, enactment, and notions such as sacrifice, penance, justification, absolution, and contrition. The contributors consider both their professional and clinical experience and their ethical, cultural, or philosophical background when considering aspects of forgiveness and its impact on clinical practice. The book is an attempt to open the subject of forgiveness, not to reach ethical conclusions nor to formulate pious psychological behavioural axioms. It also considers the weight of feeling unforgiven and of holding the lifelong resentment or vengeful wishes of the unforgiving.Psychoanalytic Approaches to Forgiveness and Mental Health will be key reading for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists in practice and in training and for other professionals interested in the role of forgiveness in mental life. It will also be of interest to academics and students of psychoanalytic studies, philosophy and spirituality.

This innovative volume on the mourning process, burial rites and intimations of immortality offers diverse Jungian, cross-cultural, interdisciplinary, depth-psychological perspectives, written predominantly by graduates and candidates of the CG Jung Institute Zuerich. The themes of this book are particularly relevant as they relate to the COVID-19 pandemic and other environmental disasters, when so many people die without a proper burial and are, thus, not properly commemorated with their status value. The contributors cover a wide range of subjects from their clinical observations attached to grief and loss in the prolonged mourning process, the meaning behind burial rites in cyclical and linear temporalities and an analysis of why certain dead are excluded from becoming ancestors. Unconscious processes such as dreams, archetypes and cultural complexes from the personal and collective unconscious are also presented and explored. This collection will be of great interest to interdisciplinary academic researchers, Jungian analysts and students, psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, anthropologists, cultural theorists and students interested in the mourning process, rites of passage, past and present burial practices and the imaginative, symbolic significance of the land of the dead.

The Psychological Impact of Boarding School is a collection of research-based essays answering a range of questions about boarding school and its long-term impact.Through a combination of original in-depth first-person narratives as well as larger scale surveys, this book aims to fill gaps in current boarding school research and present new findings. Topics addressed include gender differences, eating behaviours, loneliness, mental health and relationships, the differences between younger and older boarders, and ex-boarder experiences of therapy. The research results highlight a key role in the age that children start boarding, the way that long-term psychological influences of friendships formed at school, and the larger role that parent and family relationships play in the psychological lives of boarders. Through these findings, the book ultimately challenges the current understanding of 'boarding school syndrome', proposing a move beyond the term and its concept. The book will appeal to psychologists, psychoanalysts, counsellors, academics, teachers, current and ex-boarders as well as parents and guardians interested in the impact of boarding schools from either a professional or a personal perspective.

A Lacanian Reading of Anorexia. 304 pp. 2023:8 (Routledge, UK) <699-1076>
ISBN 978-1-032-33153-9 hard ¥31,339.- (税込) GB£ 110.00 *
ISBN 978-1-032-33152-2 paper ¥8,258.- (税込) GB£ 28.99 *
This book presents a Lacanian perspective on the understanding and treatment of anorexia, supported by case material, research and theoretical insight from the author's 25 years of clinical practice. Domenico Cosenza explains how anorexia constitutes a challenge for contemporary psychoanalytic clinicians, assesses previous theoretical understandings and examines clinical contributions from other schools of psychoanalysis. Cosenza argues that anorexia cannot be treated by following a classical psychoanalytic path, and here draws on numerous clinical cases to articulate a Lacanian approach which addresses core concerns not resolved elsewhere. Elaborating on Lacanian concepts including refusal and the object nothing, Cosenza offers a new approach for all psychoanalytically-informed clinicians working with anorexia. A Lacanian Reading of Anorexia will be of great interest to psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and psychotherapists interested in Lacanian perspectives and the dynamic-analytical approach in the treatment of anorexia.

Speculating on the Edge of Psychoanalysis: Rings and Voids. (The Lines of the Symbolic in Psychoanalysis Series) 160 pp. 2023:8 (Routledge, UK) <699-1079>

In Speculating on the Edge of Psychoanalysis, Pablo Lerner questions, and takes a step beyond, the prevailing paradigm of Lacanian psychoanalysis and its emphasis on the sovereignty of language and jouissance. Arguing for the existence of a primordial real void outside and independent of language, Lerner re-thinks the structure and functioning of Lacan's three orders and their complex interrelations. Silence, darkness, and emptiness are the names of the voids within the symbolic, the imaginary, and the real, and, in the gaps between these orders, the voids converge. Thus, Lerner re-conceptualizes the fundamental structure of the field of subjectivity, offering radical and original perspectives on a diverse range of psychoanalytical, philosophical, and theological topics. Chapters span themes such as creation and poetry, death and solitude, intuition and mysticism, truth and being, pantheism and polytheism, the poetic art of interpretation, and introduces a new mathematical conceptualization of psychoanalytic metapsychology and the clinical structures. This volume offers new psychoanalytic perspectives of great interest for practitioners and scholars in the fields of psychoanalysis, philosophy, theology, and literary studies.

Jung, Dante, and the Making of the Red Book: Of Fire and Form. (Research in Analytical Psychology and Jungian Studies) 256 pp. 2023:8 (Routledge, UK) <699-1081>
ISBN 978-1-032-10451-5 hard ¥34,188.- (税込) GB£ 120.00 *
This book explores the genesis of the Red Book (or Liber Novus), through the lens of Jung's lifelong confrontation with Dante and, in doing so, provides the first-ever thorough comparative analysis of the intertextual and symbolical correspondences between Liber Novus and the Commedia.Starting from Jung's multifaceted fascination with Dante and his pivotal role in the former's visionary material at historical, hermeneutical, and psychological levels, the book challengingly envisions Liber Novus as Jung's Divine Comedy. This work finds a new way of approaching Jung's understanding of concepts such as "visionary works" and "visionary mind" and considers how this approach can enhance our vision of depth psychology. Through various thematics such as the metanoia and the symbolism of animals, as well as the transformative role of the feminine and the erotic and spiritual imagery of the soul, this work revolves around the Jung-Dante correlation. Offering an original perspective within the field of Jungian and Dante scholarship, this book will be of great interest to academics and postgraduate students studying in the areas of Jung, Dante, analytical psychology, depth psychology, hermeneutics and Western esoteric currents and practices. The book will also appeal to Jungian analysts and psychoanalysts more broadly.

This interdisciplinary collection of essays explores the malaise of the contemporary individual by returning the economic point of view of Freudian thinking, the concept of satisfaction, libido, and pleasure-unpleasure principle to their rightful place as the motivating forces of human existence. For Freud, pleasure stands apart from other human experiences, side by side with unpleasure, always a bonus in the search for satisfaction of the pleasure principle and beyond. Along with libido, emotional fulfillment, and the capacities for sublimation and play, pleasure has not been given enough attention in the psychoanalytic literature. The editors of this book address this lack and highlight the importance of examining today's social and individual malaise through these specific lenses of inquiry. It is particularly timely and important today to address this lack, and thereby examine the impact of the social phenomena of the pandemic, the crises of ideals and virtuality on the subject who feels in a state of constant emergency, overwhelmed, addicted, and delibidinalized. With contributions from across psychoanalysis, this book is essential reading for psychoanalysts in training and in practice who want to understand how the modern world has shaped our understanding of pleasure.
