Jealousy, Femininity and Desire: A Lacanian Reading. (The Palgrave Lacan Series) 118 pp. 2023:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <714-971>
ISBN 978-3-031-46470-6 hard ¥9,412.- (税込) EUR 39.99
Drawing on Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis, this book intervenes into debates concerning the relation between jealousy and envy on the one hand, and sexual difference on the other. The author presents an original distinction between what is termed "feminine" and "phallic" forms of jealousy while mapping and theorizing other types of jealousy that she finds in the writings of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan. The discussion performs literary-critical readings of texts by Olivia Shakespear and Marguerite Duras as a means of shedding light on the topic and the distinction. Further, it discusses the challenge posed by jealousy's particular mode of jouissance and its possible vicissitudes. Though the experience of jealousy can be ravaging, the author claims, it also provides the subject an opportunity to reorient its relation to jouissance and thereby experience significant psychical change. In doing so, it provides a new outlook on jealousy as being connected to both femininity and desire, unveiling its complex character, features, and vitality within a Lacanian psychoanalytic framework. It will appeal in particular to those with an interest in psychoanalysis, literary theory and critical theory.

Guimond, Serge / Nugier, Armelle,
The Social and Political Psychology of Violent Radicalism. (Peace Psychology Book Series) 124 pp. 2024:1 (Springer, GW) <714-583>
ISBN 978-3-031-46253-5 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book provides a unique perspective on the perpetrators and victims of political violence, using original evidence from the deadly attacks perpetrated in Paris in 2015. Much of the current literature focuses on the perpetrators of such violence. This volume, however, offers a deeper analysis by focusing not only on the terrorists themselves but on understanding the reactions of the general population affected by such lethal acts. It provides a more detailed view of the opponents of terrorism, namely us, and explains how our own reactions can increase or decrease, the potential for political violence. Part I introduces the most relevant theories within social psychology and political psychology that are used to understand terrorism; Part II examines empirical evidence from a French context; and Part III discusses policy implications, with the prevention of political violence as a long-term goal. Finally, the volume offers a blueprint for a more appropriate conceptualization of terrorism as arising out of intergroup conflict suggesting ways to build a resilient society. This book will be of interest to researchers, teachers and students across social psychology, sociology, political psychology and political science.

Richards, Sinan,
Dialectics of Love in Sartre and Lacan. (The Palgrave Lacan Series) 305 pp. 2024:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <714-35>
ISBN 978-3-031-45797-5 hard ¥28,244.- (税込) EUR 119.99
What is love for Sartre and Lacan? In Dialectics of Love in Sartre and Lacan, Sinan Richards examines Sartre's and Lacan's writings on love to draw out a distinctly Lacanian conception of love and subjectivity. Richards begins by demonstrating how Sartre's in itself for itself is a convincing shorthand for Lacan's central object of study, before presenting and explaining the various aspects of Lacan's psychophilosophical project to show how, for Lacan, the subject is marked by various pathologies. He argues that, for Lacan, as for Sartre and Schelling before him, the subject is ontologically sick, and, by its very structure, the Oedipus complex produces subjects that are prey to a mental collapse at any moment. As a result, for Lacan, the subject has no choice but to identify with their potential madness, a constitutive aspect of their subjectivity. He concludes by making a compelling case that love in the Lacanian schema is the subject's mad wish to reunite in itself with for itself, which is an always impossible yet necessary aspect of subjectivity. The book presents fresh insights on Lacan and Sartre that will appeal to students and scholars of psychoanalysis, philosophy, comparative literature and critical theory.

Disseminating Behavioral Research. 285 pp. 2024:1 (Springer, GW) <714-1052>
ISBN 978-3-031-47342-5 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99
Dissemination is a key component of the research process. While several fields have developed resources dedicated to training and supporting their scientists and practitioners as they are encouraged to disseminate within their fields and to the larger public audience, there has been a lack of formal guidance for dissemination within the behavioral sciences. Disseminating Behavioral Science aims to fill that gap, providing guidance across modalities for topics ranging from the peer-review process to conference presentation to nontraditional avenues for dissemination. The contents of this edited text, divided across six sections, serves as a roadmap for students, junior researchers, and senior scholars. The first section includes types of academic scholarship, types of dissemination, and strategies to ensure ethical dissemination. The second reviews traditional publication preparation, including tips for the writing process and key components to include in each section of a scientific manuscript. Section Three explores publication within a traditional peer reviewed journal. Section Four outlines additional strategies to get research publicly recognized through conference presentations, social media and popular media sources, and white and grey literature. Sections Five and Six offer a consolidated glossary of all key terms in the text and combined reference list.

ISBN 978-0-300-26994-9 hard ¥5,605.- (税込) US$ 26.00 *
A rich and engaging guide to psychology, the science devoted to understanding human nature What really drives our decisions? Where do language and memory come from? Why do our minds sometimes seem to work against us? Psychologists have long attempted to answer these questions, seeking to understand human behaviour, feelings, and thoughts. But how to explore something so elusive? In this fascinating history, leading expert Nicky Hayes tells the story of psychology across the centuries and around the world. Hayes introduces key thinkers, including Carl Jung, Anna Freud, Frantz Fanon, and Daniel Kahneman. We see how they tried to expand our understanding, from Pavlov and his dogs to Milgram and his famous electric shock experiments to the CIA's secret mind-control projects. Hayes explores key concepts like child development, the inferiority complex, and PTSD and shows how psychological research has been used for both good and ill. This Little History shines a light on the ever-advancing study of psychology, how the field has evolved over time-and how much more we need to learn.

Stevenson, Jim,
Developmental Psychopathology: Concepts, Methods, and Findings. 420 pp. 2023:11 (Springer, GW) <714-1058>
ISBN 978-3-031-45786-9 hard ¥47,076.- (税込) EUR 199.99
This book addresses the question of whether or not behavioural differences between children can be most appropriately characterised by dimensions of psychological problems or by categorical diagnoses. It describes the concepts and methods that have been developed and applied within developmental psychopathology using this dimensional approach. The book reviews evidence on the interplay between genes and the environment in influencing internalising problems, externalising problems, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and on the hierarchical factor structure underlying these behavioural dimensions. It provides an appraisal of the state of knowledge on the longer-term sequelae of these problems and on the efficacy of treatments that have been developed for them.Key areas of coverage include:Multivariate data analytic methods for investigating behavioural differences (e.g., path analysis, cluster analysis, structural equation modelling, network analysis) and their associated theoretical frameworks (e.g., hierarchical factor models). Methods to investigate the biology of behavioural differences (e.g., quantitative and molecular genetics, epigenetics, and brain imaging). The design of research studies that can test most directly for causality (i.e., randomised controlled trials) and others that can estimate plausible causal relationships from associations and correlations.Reviews of studies that have applied these methods to understand the developmental course of internalising and externalising behaviours and the neurodevelopmental problems of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Developmental Psychopathology is an essential reference for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as clinicians and other professionals in developmental psychology, clinical child and school psychology, child and adolescent psychiatry, paediatrics, clinical social work, public health, educational psychology, and all related disciplines.

Torres Rivera, Edil,
Latine Psychology Beyond Colonialism. (International and Cultural Psychology) 54 pp. 2023:12 (Springer, GW) <714-1059>
ISBN 978-3-031-46104-0 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book examines the colonial structure as it applies to Latine populations and demonstrates how the remnants of that structure continue to affect this ethnic group. It will show that the colonial perspective is aligned with a racist viewpoint and the many ways in which this undermines psychological stability. Currently, many psychologists dealing with this population focus on individual deficits or disorders without the clarifying lens of social justice. In this way, the book will unravel the various strands of socio-political stressors and the disabling effects of lingering oppression. It will serve to bring new insights to those studying this group, as well as the many mental health workers that provide services. The result is an identification of a native psychology that is uniquely tailored to these particular individuals.
