Chaitin, Julia / Avlagon, Elad, Striving for Peace through Personal Narratives of Genocide and War. (Progressive Psychology) 238 pp. 2024:7 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <722-718>
ISBN 978-1-00-931306-3 hard ¥20,174.- (税込) GB£ 70.00

Personal narratives of genocide and intractable war can provide valuable insights around notions of collective identity, perceptions of the 'enemy,' intergenerational coping with massive social trauma, and sustainable peace and reconciliation. Written in an accessible and narrative style, this book demonstrates how the sharing of and listening to personal experiences deepens understandings of the long-term psychosocial impacts of genocide and war on direct victims and their descendants in general, and of the Holocaust and the Jewish-Arab/Palestinian-Israeli context, in specific. It provides a new theoretical model concerning the relationship between different kinds of personal narratives of genocide and war and peacebuilding or peace obstruction. Through its presentation and analysis of personal narratives connected to the Holocaust and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, it provides a deep exploration into how such narratives have the potential to promote peace and offers concrete ideas for further research of the topic and for peacebuilding, on the ground.

Szafran, Joanna / Cwojdzinska, Anna, The Meaning of Kindness. 150 S. 2024:1 (V & R unipress, GW) <722-953>
ISBN 978-3-8471-1680-6 hard ¥10,939.- (税込) EUR 45.00

Scholarly reflection on kindness raises a variety of issues and perspectives. In order to consider the impact of kindness on various aspects of human existence, it is first necessary to give it a concrete meaning. This seemingly simple task turns out to be quite challenging. The prevailing definitional chaos in the literature, the lack of consensus on basic terminological assumptions, indicates a deficit in the theoretical understanding of the concept of kindness and, perhaps more importantly, poses a problem when attempting to verify existing empirical findings, raising doubts about the generalizability of the conclusions and possible comparative studies. The book is an attempt to clarify the definition of the phenomenon of kindness. It is the result of the first research of its kind and carried out on such a scale in Poland. The main aim of the study was to determine how Polish youth understands the concept of kindness.

Krenc, Krzysztof, Can Machines Have Free Will? The Concept of Free Will in Relation to the Psychophysical Problem. (Studies in Philosophy, History of Ideas and Modern Societies 26) 150 pp. 2024:1 (P. Lang, SZ) <722-48>
ISBN 978-3-631-90899-0 hard ¥17,248.- (税込) SFR 70.00

The author analyses the concept of free will in the context of the psychophysical problem. He builds his analysis upon the presumption that the contemporary debate between compatibilists and incompatibilists is not of high relevance, since “free will” is a highly technical and vague term. So instead of directly answering questions like “Is free will possible?” or “What is free will?”, he starts his analyses from specifying a solution to the psychophysical problem and then works towards a possible definition of free will.

Mills, Jon, End of the World: Civilization and Its Fate. 250 pp. 2024:6 (Rowman & Littlefield, US) <722-53>
ISBN 978-1-5381-8900-9 hard ¥7,854.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *

Are we on the brink of human extinction? Is civilization destined toward self-annihilation? We must not underestimate the risk of the possibility that we may become extinct fairly soon. We are facing a planetary ecological crisis with runaway greenhouse gas emissions, environmental destruction, extreme climate change, human overpopulation, global catastrophic hazards including the threat of world war, nuclear holocaust, bioterror, pandemic infectious diseases, famine, water scarcity, religious fanaticism, techno nihilism, public health calamities, obscene disparities in wealth and poverty, civil disorder, and the anathema of evil that could bring about the end of the world. Philosopher and psychoanalyst Jon Mills provides the first book of its kind that examines the ominous existential risks that could bring about the end of civilization. Drawing on the psychological motivations, unconscious conflicts, and cultural complexes that drive human behavior and social relations, he offers fresh new perspectives on the looming fate of humanity based on a collective bystander disorder. In this timely book, the author explores the emergencies that could ignite an apocalypse. As we stand idly by as passive global bystanders in the face of ecological, economic, and societal collapse, we must seriously question whether humanity is under the sway of a collective unconscious death wish.

Balsemao Pires, Edmundo / Carvalho, C. A. S. et al. (eds.), Memory, Trauma and Narratives of the Self: An Interdisciplinary Approach. 272 pp. 2024:8 (E. Elgar, UK) <722-596>
ISBN 978-1-03-533796-5 hard ¥30,261.- (税込) GB£ 105.00

This insightful book explores the impact of traumatic experiences on the constitution of narrative identity. Editors Edmundo Balsemao Pires, Claudio Alexandre S. Carvalho, and Joana Ricarte bring together multidisciplinary experts to examine the epistemic and ethical-political value of narrative memory, demonstrating its significance in forming essential aspects of the self and collective identity.Challenging the idea of memory as a static, easily accessible and transferable repository, contributing authors instead present it as a dynamic process influenced by historical, therapeutic, artistic and political factors. Analysing the lasting impact of traumatic events, they assess the history of trauma therapy and use novel case studies to identify the role and nature of memory. Chapters investigate traumatic reenactments, conscious and unconscious attempts to suppress and appropriate memories, and the narrative coherence of origins, belonging and purposes. Ultimately, the book provides an integrative paradigm for understanding trauma that accounts for the psychic, social and political conditions which shape its categorization, identification and treatment.Bringing together transdisciplinary theoretical models and empirical methodologies to forge new paths for the field, this book is an essential resource for academics and students in political science, sociology, psychology and psychoanalysis, the philosophy of memory and trauma studies.

Freiherr von Fircks, Enno, Conservativism: A Cultural-Psychological Exploration. (SpringerBriefs in Theoretical Advances in Psychology) 124 pp. 2024:2 (Springer, GW) <722-599>
ISBN 978-3-031-51204-9 paper ¥10,936.- (税込) EUR 44.99

The present work discusses the phenomenon of conservativism from a qualitative, cultural-psychological perspective. As such, the text breaks with current mainstream research about political ideologies wanting to assess a political culture within the simple administration of a questionnaire. The SpringerBrief will oppose such a perspective trying to assess how the conservative-minded person will structure space and time in peculiar ways. In the first part of the study, participants were invited to reflect about how they preserve or conserve meaning in various activities whereas the second part of the study tried to shed light onto how something preservable or conservable comes into being and what it actually makes it preservable. Here, an autoethnographic study revealed that something becomes meaningfully preservable when it satisfies multiple demands of the Self as well as of the environment. Readers will realize the insufficiency of the positivistic attitude analyzing conservativism from a simple quantitative perspective, and researchers are shown how political ideologies or cultures can be assessed ecologically - something that has not yet been undertaken. This leads to an appeal for scientists to study the phenomenon of conservativism more wholistically.

ポジティブ学校心理学ハンドブック
Arslan, Goekmen / Yildirim, Murat (eds.), Handbook of Positive School Psychology: Evidence-Based Strategies for Youth Well-being. (Advances in Mental Health and Addiction) 220 pp. 2024:5 (Springer, GW) <722-1253>
ISBN 978-3-031-54294-7 hard ¥41,323.- (税込) EUR 169.99

Students spend significantly more time in school compared to any other formal institution during their lives; therefore, mental health in schools has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. According to Seligman et al. (2009), positive psychology in school is a response to the gap between what people want for their children and what schools teach. That is, most parents want their children to be happy, healthy, and confident, but schools only focus on achievement, discipline, and academic skills. These are of course important, but so are positive mental health outcomes. To fix this gap, schools must teach achievement and accomplishment along with positive psychology-informed mental health skills. In other words, positive education aims to bring positive psychology's goals of well-being and mental health support for everyone into the school setting.Psychological interventions have been around in schools since at least the 1930s. Therefore, it makes sense to supplement the already-existing traditional psychology in schools with positive psychology. In the field of psychology, positive psychology interventions are defined as those aimed at raising positive feelings, positive thoughts, and positive behaviour and increasing well-being. Positive Psychology Interventions in schools have been shown to improve mental health and well-being outcomes for students. Recent research has confirmed the same results, as offering emotional support early in a school year can lead to improved instructional quality later in that school year. In other words, positive school psychology interventions offer a focus on mental health in order to set the stage and give students the opportunity for academic achievement. Since the beginning of the positive psychology movement, the application of its assumptions in schools has been one of the movement's main pillars. The objective of the book is to help counsellors, teachers, and school leaders engage in a positive psychology research-based practice in schools.

Magalhaes, Luisa / Ferreira Lopes, Maria Jose et al. (eds.), Humanistic Perspectives in Happiness Research. (Happiness Studies Book Series) 195 pp. 2024:5 (Springer, GW) <722-1271>
ISBN 978-3-031-38599-5 hard ¥31,599.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This volume provides innovative perspectives on the scholarly connection between the humanities and happiness, and considers the narrative expressions of happiness and recent investigations about happiness, its metrics, and objective insights about human wellbeing. This volume relates intemporal humanistic values to views across social and behavioural sciences, and thereby covers a broad interdisciplinary frame, from philosophy, psychology, literary studies, to the communication sciences. The philosophers in this volume discuss the achievement of happiness through the cultivation of virtue, as well as the logic of the gift as an experience of personal fulfilment and the fact that happiness is inextricably linked to hope. Their chapters take on the approach of the permanent human struggle to generate global horizons of happiness and thus attain eternal bliss. Scholars from other fields of the humanities and communication sciences consider the positive messages of environmentalhappiness in virtual platforms, where the Homo digitalis finds happiness at the click of a button, often under the endorsement of celebrities, or under the visual fruition of playful objects. They also present the intertextual memory of happiness as a condition for humanistic research. Finally, this volume considers the sphere of education as the best place in which to apply the results of sustainable happiness measurement and research, and to realize this complementary, humanistic perspective on happiness research.

This book integratively examines theories and models of the most essential findings of personality psychology with the aim of advancing personality knowledge. Since much empirical research is applied to very specific problems, the larger picture can get lost. Rather, this book starts from a coherent scientific theoretical framework, rather than presenting diverse theories of personality - phenomenological empirical, psychoanalytic behavioral, humanistic and cognitive perspectives - without enough critical examination. In this book, all theories, models and perspectives are reviewed and discussed within a unified theoretical framework of psychology Thus, historically and conceptually different models can be considered by scientific standards. Its insights will be highly relevant to academics, students and professional alike.
