A Conceptual History of Psychophysics: Ernst Weber's Law of Desire. 75 pp. 2024:8 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <734-54>
ISBN 978-3-031-66596-7 hard ¥8,235.- (税込) EUR 34.99
This book explores the concept of psychophysics and details the development of the ideas which made the mathematisation of desire possible. The experience of desire accompanies us all throughout life, but dealing with it as psychologists and scientists is far from easy. Psychophysics was conceived to help map, mathematically, these unknowable feelings of desire. As such, this book will help to provide an accessible account of psychophysics while telling the story of its creation, which was, in essence, the birth of scientific psychology and contemporary cognitive neuroscience, alongside many of the technologies which characterize the contemporary world. It is a strange and intriguing story, which begins with the German physiologist Ernst Heinrich Weber in the first half of the nineteenth century, and its story will help the reader gain fresh insight into how scientists came to be able to map and quantify complex and private emotional states.

Happiness Across Cultures: Views of Happiness and Quality of Life in Non-Western Cultures. 2nd ed. (Science Across Cultures: The History of Non-Western Science 6) 391 pp. 2024:12 (Springer, GW) <734-321>
ISBN 978-94-024-2257-3 hard ¥40,014.- (税込) EUR 169.99
This second edition of Happiness Across Cultures contains 8 brand new chapters on previously uncovered topics, such as Covid19, refugees, and violence. Different cultures experience happiness differently. Traditionally, the West is considered materialistic, and happiness is said to come from achievement and acquisition. The East is said to be more people-oriented, where happiness is a result of deep personal interactions. Thus, poor people can be happier in the East than the West, because they are not so concerned with possession and more with society. This new edition considers happiness and quality of life in non-Western countries and cultures. Its coverage is now more diverse and spans the breadth of the non-Western world, revealing unique perspectives of happiness and life quality embedded in rich cultural traditions and histories.

Psycho-Legal Concepts for Parenting in Child Custody and Child Protection. Vol. 1: Policy Principles in Australia. 203 pp. 2024:11 (Springer, GW) <734-331>
ISBN 978-981-9761-43-2 hard ¥35,306.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book provides an overview of changes in legislation in Australia concerning both family law and child protection law. The topic is important as the Australian Government has identified that the rate of mental disorder in some cohorts of children is high and rising. These cohorts of children live in families where they are vulnerable because they are exposed to risk factors that can be changed by a coordinated effort from parents, therapists, and lawyers. The aim of the book is to identify psycho-legal concepts that need to be understood by professionals who work in the fields of child custody and child protection, and to bring these concepts together to improve coordination between the two fields of practice. The purpose of the book is to be a practice manual for professionals from the disciplines of law, social work, and psychologists who work in specialized legal roles dealing with families where children are vulnerable to developing mental health difficulties. Volume 1 of the book provides a perspective from a mental health clinician about concepts and principles that arise in Australian family-oriented courts, and that need to be shared between disciplines. This book proposes that some concepts be identified as psycho-legal as the concepts need to be shared between disciplines who work with court-involved families. The book also proposes that psycho-legal concepts be shared between the jurisdictions of child custody and child protection. In this book, proposals are made to improve collaboration between disciplines and to maximize the best interests of children.

Psycho-legal Concepts for Parenting in Child Custody and Child Protection. Vol. 3: Structured Instruments to Provide Objective Assessments in Court-Related Family Work. 155 pp. 2024:12 (Springer, GW) <734-333>
ISBN 978-981-9758-57-9 hard ¥35,306.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book identifies a number of topics that arise in child protection where assessments of individual families are required. The author opines that it is essential to use structured instruments when making assessments on complex topic about risk to reduce bias and to maximise objectivity. The author summarises criteria that are required for an assessment instrument to be viewed by scientists as being objective. The book proposes that introducing more objective assessment instruments into the field of child protection will: improve the focus and brevity of assessment reports; and enable setting of thresholds that distinguish between families who provide good-enough parenting from families who should be referred for parenting education, and from parents who are unfit parents. The author identifies a number of topics that commonly arise in cases where maltreatment of children is alleged, reviews literature, and proposes checklists that can be used to gather data and to form a basis for developing validated assessment instruments for use in child protection. The topics identified are relevant both to therapists as parenting practices can be changed using focused therapy, and for legal assessment purposes as topics have been shown to be related to legal concerns about the safety and welfare of children. The overall aim of this book is to encourage greater use of scientific assessment approaches in the field of child protection.

Reading Foucault Through Lacan: From Hysteric to Analyst. (The Palgrave Lacan Series) 255 pp. 2024:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <734-30>
ISBN 978-3-031-69737-1 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book offers an explorative analysis of the intersections between Jacques Lacan and Michel Foucault that challenges the prevailing notion of incompatibility between their intellectual projects. It proposes an interpretive framework that aligns Foucault's relationship to Kantian critique with Lacan's theory of the four discourses from Seminar XVII: The Other Side of Psychoanalysis (1969-70). Exploring multiple periods of each thinker's work, the book examines how the conceptual trajectories represented by Foucault and Lacan might be effectively combined to advance a new form of Foucauldian-Lacanianism. The book is divided into two parts. Part I, "The Hysteric," introduces a novel interpretation of Foucault's genealogical method in the early to mid-1970s. Drawing on Lacan's schema of the Hysteric's discourse, it understands hysteria as a mode of address within which Foucault's critical historiography can be situated. This perspective positions Foucault as a discoursing subject, challenging the uncontested remnants of Kant's transcendental legacy. Part II, "The Analyst," offers a retrospective of Foucault's earlier work through a consideration of Lacan's claim that analytic experience begins with the hystericiziation of discourse. It examines the period between 1979-1984, analyzing significant modifications and shifts in Foucault's work including his reconceptualization of critique. Part II interprets Foucault's re-alignment with Kant's critical legacy as retroactively constituting the conditions of transformation from the Hysteric to the Analyst's discourse. Using newly available English translations of Foucault's lectures and Lacan's seminars, the book offers a novel rereading of Foucault's genealogical method, his relation to Kantian critique, and psychoanalysis. It provides fresh insights for students and scholars of psychoanalysis, philosophy, and critical theory.

Critical Perspectives into Flow Research: From Conceptual Detail to Global Geopolitics. 211 pp. 2024:11 (Springer, GW) <734-1501>
ISBN 978-3-031-70332-4 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book breaks down barriers between disciplines engaging with flow, by speaking from geography into psychology to establish geographical foundations for this psychological phenomenon. It frames and works with the multiple contradictions within the extant literature as productive rather than prohibitive, thereby encouraging collaboration across discrepancies as well as across disciplines. It incorporates new materials and perspectives to research on flow, including aesthetic theory, new materialism, more-than-human geographies, and critical development geographies to broaden the theoretical and empirical landscape of future flow scholarship. It also digs more deeply into pre-existing areas of interest within flow research than has been done before, for example, with respect to 'dark' flow, 'flowability' and (tele)presence, to facilitate more nuanced engagement with such terms. It takes a step back from the detailed empirical work that characterizes most current flow research to pose questions as to how such divergent, even contradictory, findings can emerge from scholarship on a supposedly universal experience that is purportedly robustly constructed, and whether this contrariness is necessarily problematic or emblematic of flow itself and therefore worthy of conceptual elaboration. Finally, it evokes global scale and long-term critical perspectives on the future evolution of flow to counteract the presentism within existing work that emphasizes immediate gains (e.g., performance, wellbeing, profit), in an attempt to pre-empt the worst ramifications of the progressive commodification and strategization of flow. This innovative book is of interest to scholars from a range of fields, from psychology, to business and human resource management, leisure studies, and critical human geography.

A People's History of Psychoanalysis. Tr. by S. Branson. 240 pp. 2025:7 (Pluto Pr., UK) <734-1507>
ISBN 978-0-7453-4960-2 paper ¥4,840.- (税込) GB£ 16.99
It has been decades since Freud fell out of favour, not only in mainstream psychiatry but also in radical thought, where both he and Lacan were accused of sexist and class biases. A People's History of Psychoanalysis refuses to accept this growing depoliticization of a formerly revolutionary field. Florent Gabarron-Garcia shatters the comfortable narrative of psychoanalysts as armchair theorists placidly interpreting family complexes sheltered in their consulting rooms. Recalling Freud's radical moments (such as his promotion of free clinics in Weimar Germany), or lesser-known figures including the Marxist Feminist psychoanalyst Marie Langer, his new history delves into how revolutionary ferment has cross-fertilized the exploration of the unconscious. A People's History of Psychoanalysis is for those who wish to resist the conformist, therapist-centered, and repressive management of madness under contemporary capitalism.

Unification of Artificial Intelligence and Psychology. Volume One: Foundations. 296 pp. 2024:11 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <734-1508>
ISBN 978-3-031-68318-3 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book -the first of a two-volume monograph- seeks to unify the hitherto perceived-as-disparate foundations of psychology and artificial intelligence. It does this by replacing their constitutive notions with a novel common one: noemon system. The ensued Theory of Noemon Systems is developed in terms of an interdisciplinary, language- based, axiomatic approach. The first volume details the development of the foundations of the theory and expounds ramifications for cognitive science and AI including novel solutions to the AGI debate and Darwin's mental gap issue, while o?ering the first complete definition of AI. The book concurrently explores the similarities and di?erences between humans and AI/robot systems with respect to the evolution-dependent phenomena of representation, thinking, understanding and communication. The book is an extensive one; because of it's extensiveness and broad ramifications, this book will appeal to scientists working on the interfaces of psychology, AI, philosophy of mind, neuroscience, and the humanities. The complicated and extensive unification of the fields of Artificial Intelligence and psychology is continued in the second volume that breaks further new ground for both disciplines, with thought-provoking and compelling implications for both.

Erxin Scales: Child Developmental Scale of China. 335 pp. 2024:9 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <734-1511>
ISBN 978-981-9999-96-5 hard ¥28,244.- (税込) EUR 119.99
This book, drawing from internationally renowned scales like Bayley and Gesell, develops a child developmental assessment scale based on research data from Chinese children. It stands as a meticulous creation of the Capital Institute of Pediatrics, a national-level institution for children's development research in China. The scale demonstrates good reliability and validity, meeting psychometric standards in various statistical aspects. In the revised scale, developmental quotients are classified into six levels, distributions of percentiles for developmental quotients are provided, and screening indices for autism spectrum disorders are added. In doing so, the revised scale can not only identify developmental delays but also concurrently screen for autism spectrum disorder risks, providing a foundational reference for tracking children's developmental status in follow-up studies. The book holds vital value and significance in fostering communication among scholars from universities and research institutions, as well as pediatricians, neurologists, and rehabilitation specialists in hospitals.

This Volume of Annals of Theoretical Psychology highlights the fact that the flourishing aftermath of both Freud's and Lacan's ideas still exist. This is done in different ways. Some papers focus on rereading core texts of Freud and Lacan. Others apply Freud's and Lacan's principles in a new and contemporaneous actuality. Others again, transform and develop some of the core principles in psychoanalysis, whereas others discuss the scientific principles that lie behind psychoanalysis. This book will be important for scholars interested in psychoanalysis in general. The readers should be both clinicians and others interested in psychoanalysis all over the world.

Psychological Science: The Consequences of Choosing Soft. (SpringerBriefs in Psychology) 86 pp. 2024:10 (Springer, GW) <734-1513>
ISBN 978-3-031-69401-1 paper ¥11,766.- (税込) EUR 49.99
This book examines questions of experimental design, in social science principally concerning what happens if shortcuts are allowed in the design, analysis, and interpretation of psychological research. The author argues that shortcuts lead to experimental results that are of low power and lack the precision that should be afforded experimental work. Consequently, it should not be surprising that psychological science has difficulty replicating its findings. A more specialized focus is the lack of success of self-esteem training techniques despite their widespread usage. The failure of self-esteem training is contrasted with the success of work that involves the use of standardized testing procedures and scores, such as IQ. From this perspective, while self-esteem and IQ testing have been each proposed as Hole Grails, meaning that they constitute comprehensive influences on many aspects of behavior, only IQ can function in this manner. It is also argued that some areas of social science, particularly unconscious bias, have not been subjected to sufficient critical scrutiny, and therefore are associated with rather weak empirical profiles that do not justify the popularity of the procedures. Throughout the book, the work habits of modern scientists are contrasted with those of one of science's most successful practitioners, Charles Darwin, and to a lesser extent, Sigmund Freud. Contrasts between the historically-validated work of Darwin on the one hand, and modern psychological science, suggest avenues of methodological improvement in the practice of modern psychological science.

The Microgenetic Method: Legacy of Baerbel Inhelder. (SpringerBriefs in Psychology and Cultural Developmental Science) 89 pp. 2024:9 (Springer, GW) <734-1520>
ISBN 978-3-031-68747-1 paper ¥11,766.- (税込) EUR 49.99
One of the arguments that explain the relevance of this book is the overwhelming lack of knowledge that the current literature throws on the Inhelderian microgenetic method. The place of this method is definitely ungrateful and has remained incomprehensibly hidden. All indications are that it seems to have lagged behind many of the brightest heads in developmental psychology, those who made up the Geneva school. The book aims to illustrate how Inhelderian microgenesis emerges in the landscape of cognitive development as a new object of study. More than ruptures with respect to the problems of the normative subject, the Inhelderian project entails both conceptual and methodological displacements. In this new map, the psychological subject takes a predominant place, and does so in terms of the cognitive functioning of the subject in relation to situations of resolution. This functioning is studied on the basis of the microgenetic method, which makes it possible to identify the role of mental schemas, their combinations and recompositions in the face of specific and problematic situations. The totally original version of the microgenetic method that is delivered from the Inhelderian legacy in this book, not only recovers its basic sense but also advances in the direction of some indications that Inhelder herself had pointed out. This renewed object of study recovers a subject, with a status in terms of its own models, its theories and its dynamics. Starting from a demanding and knowledgeable reading of Inhelder's work. This knowledge becomes the best criterion to point out an updated path of the work with concepts and tools resulting from recent research but articulated with a microgenetic vision coming from the most orthodox tradition. The bet consists of advancing from the legacy of Inhelder and her team and projecting it as a methodological alternative for current research in developmental studies.

Sonn, Christopher / Fernandez, Jesica Siham et al. (eds.),
Handbook of Decolonial Community Psychology. (Community Psychology) 546 pp. 2024:12 (Springer, GW) <734-1525>
ISBN 978-3-031-67034-3 hard ¥77,678.- (税込) EUR 329.99
This handbook offers refined interpretations of decolonial thought, methodologies, and practices in community psychology. As a representative mapping of the broad range of decolonial cosmovisions, experiences, and praxes in community psychology and allied disciplines around the globe, it brings together contributions from North America, Latin America, Europe, Oceania, Africa, and Asia. It offers an overview of community psychology with a decolonial focus and from a transnational perspective, transcending intellectual, geographical, and cultural borders, and constraining identities, affirming and celebrating the unique identities, experiences, and positions of its contributors within the global landscape of knowledge and politics. The handbook illuminates the dynamic intersections between resistance and colonial legacies, foregrounding the enduring struggles against settler colonialism and racial capitalism across diverse geographies, temporalities, and histories. Underscoring the urgency of addressing inter-connected local and global challenges, such as land rights, livelihoods, and dignified existence, it offers hopeful yet critical perspectives on radical social justice struggles around the globe. The volume brings together contributions from scholars, academics, educators, researchers, practitioners, activists, and community collaborators, and its chapters range in style and format. Some are more aligned with academic writing, while others - in the spirit of decolonizing disciplinary logics - are structured through more undisciplined, less constrained writing forms. Each author was invited to question the coloniality of power in and beyond community psychology. As such, the handbook contains productions that trouble the manifestations of coloniality both in the past and in the present, as well as in the different territories of the Majority World, particularly within settler colonial nation-states. As a seminal work, the Handbook of Decolonial Community Psychology will further define and shape the contours of knowledge in decolonial community psychology, and inspire new generations of scholars, practitioners, students, and community organizers to advance the field with innovative ideas and transformative practices.

Stern, L. William,
On the Psychology of Individual Differences: Toward a 'Differential Psychology'. (Palgrave Studies in the Theory and History of Psychology) 178 pp. 2024:11 (Springer, GW) <734-1526>
ISBN 978-3-031-69637-4 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book presents an English translation, by Nicolas and Lamiell, of the entirety of a German-language text authored by William Stern (1871-1938) and published in 1900. Its publication is widely considered to mark the founding of that sub-discipline of psychology devoted to the systematic study of individual and group differences. The book includes an introductory chapter by Nicolas and Lamiell, placing Stern's work into historical context and discussing its influence on the work of scholars who followed.By making this available for the first time for an Anglophone audience, it fills a significant gap in the history of psychology literature and offers a springboard into much needed critical discourse on the contemporary state of psychological testing in particular, and on the study of individual and group differences more broadly. It holds fresh insights for those specializing in the fields of personality psychology, educational psychology, and industrial-organizational psychology; as well as to practitioners in the fields of personal and educational counseling.

Timofeeva, Oxana,
Freud's Beasty Boys: Sex, Violence and Masculinity. 130 pp. 2025:1 (Polity Pr., UK) <734-1397>
ISBN 978-1-5095-6840-6 hard ¥12,925.- (税込) US$ 59.95
ISBN 978-1-5095-6841-3 paper ¥4,301.- (税込) US$ 19.95
This book examines violence and sexuality after Freud. Its characters, though, are not women and men, but rather animals and children. Focusing on three famous Freudian cases in which little boys had issues with animals - Little Hans, The Rat Man, and the Wolf Man - it revises the role played by animals in male gender socialization. Timofeeva demonstrates the relevance of psychoanalysis for anyone who wants to understand how patriarchy works, but she also points to its limitations. For Freud, sexuality creates the background of our psychic lives, and unconscious sexual fantasies are the origins of psychic disorders such as hysteria, obsessions and phobias. But what are the origins of sexual fantasies? Timofeeva argues that behind psychic dramas of sexuality there is something else: a mechanism of violence which she calls 'the machine of masculinity' and which she analyses both through Freud's cases and through the lens of religion, anthropology and her own life experiences. Wolves, rats and horses are magical agents that connect us to the world of the dead - that is, to the history of our culture in which monotheism replaced totemic practices but the basic psychosocial matrix of turning love into violence continues to reproduce itself.
