Marcobelli, Elisa,
Internationalism Toward Diplomatic Crisis: The Second International and French, German and Italian Socialists. (Marx, Engels, and Marxisms) 321 pp. 2021:6 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <664-4309>
ISBN 978-3-030-74083-2 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99 *
This book analyzes how the Second International reacted to international diplomatic crises and what was the attitude of French, German and Italian socialists between 1889 and 1915, the year in which Italy entered the World War. This book shows that the Second International became over the years more and more involved in the fight against war and learnt to respond to situations of diplomatic crisis. An example of this is the fact that its last congress before the outbreak of the First World War, the Basel Congress of 1912, was nothing less than a great international socialist demonstration of opposition to war. However, the fact that France, Germany or Italy were involved in a diplomatic crisis hindered the International's ability to respond effectively to it. For all these factors, the attitude of the International is very different from one crisis to another.

Hart, Amy,
Fourierist Communities of Reform: The Social Networks of Nineteenth-Century Female Reformers. (Palgrave Studies in Utopianism) 248 pp. 2021:7 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <664-3880>
ISBN 978-3-030-68355-9 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99 *
This book explores the intersections between nineteenth-century social reform movements in the United States. Delving into the little-known history of women who joined income-sharing communities during the 1840s, this book uses four community case studies to examine social activism within communal environments. In a period when women faced legal and social restrictions ranging from coverture to slavery, the emergence of residential communities designed by French utopian writer, Charles Fourier, introduced spaces where female leadership and social organization became possible. Communitarian women helped shape the ideological underpinnings of some of the United States' most enduring and successful reform efforts, including the women's rights movement, the abolition movement, and the creation of the Republican Party. Dr. Hart argues that these movements were intertwined, with activists influencing multiple organizations within unexpected settings.

van der Velden, Sjaak,
Historical Dictionary of Organized Labor. 4th ed. (Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies, and Movements) 602 pp. 2021:6 (Rowman & Littlefield, US) <664-36>
ISBN 978-1-5381-3460-3 hard ¥47,647.- (税込) US$ 221.00 *
From the start of its existence organized labor has been the voice of workers to improve their economic, social, and political positions. Beginning with small and very often illegal groups of involved workers it grew to the million member organizations that now exist around the globe. It is studied from many different perspectives - historical, economic, sociological, and legal - but it fundamentally involves the struggle for workers' rights, human rights and social justice. In an often hostile environment, organized labor has tried to make the world a fairer place. Even though it has only ever covered a minority of employees in most countries, its effects on their political, economic, and social systems have been generally positive. Despite growing repression of organized labor in recent years, membership numbers are still growing for the benefit of all employees, including the non-members. Historical Dictionary of Organized Labor: Fourth Edition makes the history of this important feature of life easily accessible. The reader is guided through a chronology, an introductory essay, 600 entries on the subject, appendixes with statistical material, and an extensive bibliography including Internet sites. This book gives a thorough introduction into past and present for historians, economists, sociologists, journalists, activists, labor union leaders, and anyone interested in the development of this important issue.
