Canale, German, A Multimodal and Ethnographic Approach to Textbook Discourse. (Routledge Studies in Multimodality) 200 pp. 2022:8 (Routledge, UK) <675-1584>
ISBN 978-0-367-70732-3 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This book offers a new framework for analysing textbook discourse, bridging the gap between contemporary ethnographic approaches and multimodality for a contextually sensitive approach which considers the multiplicity of multimodal resources involved in the production and use of textbooks. The volume makes the case for textbook discourse studies to go beyond studies of textual representation and critically consider the ways in which textbook discourse is situated within wider social practices. Each chapter considers a different social semiotic practice in which textbook and textbook discourse is involved: representation, communication, interaction, learning, and recontextualization. In bringing together this work with contemporary ethnography scholarship, the book offers a comprehensive toolkit for further research on textbook discourse and pushes the field forward into new directions. This innovative book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in discourse analysis, multimodality, social semiotics, language and communication, and curriculum studies.

Robinson, Douglas, Priming Translation: Cognitive, Affective, and Social Factors. 160 pp. 2022:8 (Routledge, UK) <675-1588>
ISBN 978-0-367-68115-9 hard ¥35,612.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *

This innovative volume builds on Michael S. Gazzaniga's Interpreter Theory toward radically expanding the theoretical and methodological scope of translational priming research.Gazzaniga's Interpreter Theory, based on empirical studies carried out with split-brain patients, argues for the Left-Brain Interpreter (LBI), a module in the brain's left hemisphere that seeks to make sense of their world based on available evidence-and, where no evidence is available, primed by past memories, confabulates coherence. The volume unpacks this idea in translation research to test whether translators are primed to confabulate by the LBI in their own work. Robinson investigates existing empirical research to test hypotheses on the translational links between the LBI and cognitive priming, the Right-Brain Interpreter and affective priming, and the Collective Full-Brain Interpreter and social priming. Taken together, the book seeks to open translational priming studies up to the full range of cognitive, affective, and social primes and to prime cognitive translation researchers to implement this broader dynamic in future research. This book will be of interest to scholars in translation and interpreting studies, especially those working in cognitive translation and interpreting studies.

Spitzer, D. M. / Oliveira, Paulo (eds.), Transfiction and Bordering Approaches to Theorizing Translation: Essays in Dialogue with the Work of Rosemary Arrojo. (Routledge Advances in Translation and Interpreting Studies) 232 pp. 2022 (Routledge, UK) * paper 2024 <675-1589>
ISBN 978-1-03-221140-4 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
ISBN 978-1-03-221161-9 paper ¥11,392.- (税込) GB£ 39.99 *

This collection seeks to expand the centers from which scholars theorize translation, building on themes in Rosemary Arrojo's pioneering work on transfiction and the influence of bordering disciplines in investigating and elucidating questions central to the field of translation studies. Chapters by scholars around the world theorize translation from diverse perspectives, drawing on a wide range of literatures, genres, and media, including fiction, philosophy, drama, and film. Half the chapters explore the influence of Rosemary Arrojo's work on transfiction and the ways in which fictional representations of translators and translation can shed new light on theoretical concerns. The other chapters look to fields outside translation studies, such as linguistics, media studies, and philosophy, to demonstrate the ways in which the key thinkers and theories that have influenced Arrojo's work can be seen in other disciplines and in turn, encourage further cross-disciplinary research interrogating key questions in the field. The collection makes the case for a multi-layered approach to theorizing translation, one which accounts for the rich possibilities in revisiting existing work and thinking outside disciplinary boundaries in order to advance the field. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in translation studies and comparative literature.

Valentinova, Olga / Denisenko, Vladimir et al., The Systemic View as a Basis for Philological Thought. Tr. by O. Barash et al. (Studies in Slavic, Baltic, and Eastern European Languages and Cultures) 408 pp. 2021:11 (Lexington Books, US) <675-1590>
ISBN 978-1-79364-771-9 hard ¥31,046.- (税込) US$ 144.00 *

In A Systemic View as the Base of Philological Thought, Olga Valentinova, Vladimir Denisenko, Sergey Preobrazhenskii, and Mikhail Rybakov explore the interrelation of language material, structure, and functions in various subjects of philological research, such as grammatical systems of language, semantics, linguistic personality, literary text, and formal aspects of verse. Their systemic approach is rooted in the theories of Wilhelm von Humboldt and his followers, including Russian scholars Alexander Potebnya, Gustav Shpet, and more recently Gennadii Prokop'evichMel'nikov (1928-2000). The authors use the concept of systemicity as an opportunity to see the studied whole in development, to show the functional interaction of linear and supra-linear connections, to explain their interdependence, and to predict further changes within the system. This book displays the scientific potential of the systemic approach to linguistics and related spheres, employing the framework of systematicity to revise the modern trends of philology and to map out an alternative paradigm for linguistic and philological thought that could restore the status of philology as a holistic science.

Zulawnik, Adam, Translating Controversial Texts in East Asian Contexts: A Methodology for the Translation of 'Controversy'. (Routledge Advances in Translation and Interpreting Studies) 144 pp. 2022 (Routledge, UK) * paper 2024 <675-1591>
ISBN 978-0-367-76622-1 hard ¥14,241.- (税込) GB£ 49.99 *
ISBN 978-0-367-76624-5 paper ¥5,694.- (税込) GB£ 19.99 *

Zulawnik focuses on the broad concept of 'controversy' and issues pertaining to the translation of politically and historically controversial texts in East Asia. The research methodology is exemplified through a case study in the form of the author's translation of the best-selling Japanese graphic novel (manga) Manga Kenkanryu (Hate Hallyu: The Comic) by Sharin Yamano (2005), a work that has been problematised as an attack on South Korean culture and the Korean Wave. Issues analysed and discussed in the research include translation risk, ethics, a detailed methodology for the translation of so-called controversial texts exemplified through numerous thematically divided examples from the translation of the chosen Japanese text, as well as examples from a Korean language equivalent (Manhwa Hyeomillyu - Hate Japanese Wave), and definition and contextualisation of the concept of 'controversy'. There has been limited research in the field of translation studies, which seeks to exemplify potential pragmatic approaches for the translation of politically-charged texts, particularly in multi-modal texts such as the graphic novel. It is hoped that Zulawnik's research will serve both as a valuable source when examining South Korea-Japan relations and a theoretical and methodological base for further research and the development of an online augmented translation space with devices specifically suited for the translation of multi-modal texts such as - but not limited to - graphic novels and visual encyclopaedias.

Combining theory and practice, this book is a model for Arabic translation and prepares students for the translation industry.Containing 22 approaches, An Introduction to Arabic Translation provides the normative principles to guide training in Arabic-English-Arabic translation. It revitalizes Arabic-English-Arabic translation through its empirical textual reality, hinged upon Arabic and English authentic contexts and their linguistic, discoursal, and cultural incongruity. The exercises in each chapter provide practical training supported by translation theory. The translation commentaries included represent a critical translation quality assessment based on an analysis of discourse and textual features to highlight the process of translation, the translation approach adopted, and why. Such commentary invites students to reflect on their understanding of the translation process and the approach required for a given Arabic-English-Arabic translation problem.Providing a methodologically comprehensive course of Arabic-English-Arabic translation studies, and insightful discussion of high value for both students and teachers, this book will be invaluable to anyone seeking to learn or improve their Arabic and translation skills.

ISBN 978-1-03-219335-9 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This innovative collection showcases the importance of the relationship between translation and experience in premodern science, bringing together an interdisciplinary group of scholars to offer a nuanced understanding of knowledge transfer across premodern time and space. The volume considers experience as a tool and object of science in the premodern world, using this idea as a jumping-off point from which to view translation as a process of interaction between diff erent epistemic domains. The book is structured around four dimensions of translation-between terms within and across languages; across sciences and scientific norms; between verbal and visual systems; and through the expertise of practitioners and translators-which raise key questions on what constituted experience of the natural world in the premodern area and the impact of translation processes and agents in shaping experience.Providing a wide-ranging global account of historical studies on the travel and translation of experience in the premodern world, this book will be of interest to scholars in history, the history of translation, and the history and philosophy of science.
