Seargeant, Philip, Crisis Leadership: Boris Johnson and Political Persuasion during the Covid Pandemic. (Elements in Applied Linguistics) 75 pp. 2023:2 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <697-730>
ISBN 978-1-00-932197-6 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *

This Element examines the way that Boris Johnson's government handled the early months of the Covid crisis in the UK, with a particular focus on the role of rhetoric and communication in enacting their leadership strategy. In liberal democracies, persuasive communication is a vital tool for the execution of power, and leadership is often seen to rely on effective communication practices. The Element focuses in particular on the ways in which notions of trust and authority were constructed as part of this strategy, and how these operated as key indexicals meant to provide a foundation for effective persuasion. It examines how, within a few weeks of the start of the lockdown policy, media opinion had begun opining that the government was losing the trust of the electorate due to actions related to this communications strategy, which had the effect of undermining its authority of influence.

Sieberkrob, Matthias, Sprachbildung und historisches Lernen - aber wie?: Ziele, Professionalisierung, Umsetzung. (Beihefte zur Zeitschrift fuer Geschichtsdidaktik 29) 411 S. 2023:2 (V & R unipress, GW) <697-1306>
ISBN 978-3-8471-1539-7 hard ¥15,301.- (税込) EUR 65.00

Using an emancipatory approach to historical learning, agency is emphasized as a goal for academic language learning in history classes. Furthermore, the professionalization of history teachers for academic language learning is examined. Planning conversations of history lessons that include academic language learning are analyzed empirically. The results show that students find it discernibly difficult to think of academic language and historical learning together. For this reason, a framework model of academic language learning with an emancipatory approach is developed. It is of importance for the professionalization of history teachers since it answers the fundamental question of how to implement academic language learning in history classes.

This innovative introduction to linguistics connects language structure to everyday use, culture, and context, making the technicalities of language structure accessible, vivid, and engaging. The first text to take a socially realistic linguistics approach, this exciting new textbook situates discussions about the building blocks of language like phonetics, syntax, and pragmatics within a social justice framework that recognizes that all language is shaped by sociocultural forces and reveals and reinforces ideologies. Uniquely, this text also introduces ecolinguistics, a new field that examines the relationship between language and its environment, again demonstrating how widely held views about language can have real-world consequences. Key features include: "Linguistics in your world" sections to connect concepts discussed with specific social issues "L1 acquisition in focus" sections to relate key concepts to first language acquisition "Explorations" sections at the end of each chapter to encourage students to test their knowledge, discuss in groups, and apply what they have learned to their own experiences End-of-chapter summaries and key term lists to conclude the main lessons and highlights of each chapter Recommendations for further readingEveryday Linguistics: An Introduction to the Study of Language is an ideal starting point for students that are new to the study of language, and those not majoring in language study.

Cowan, Hannah / Percio, Alfonso Del, Writing Banal Inequalities: How to Fabricate Stories Which Disrupt. (Elements in Applied Linguistics) 75 pp. 2023:5 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <697-1543>
ISBN 978-1-00-910851-5 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *

In this Element, the authors write about the everyday production and experiences of banal inequality. Through a series of sections, each comprising of a blogpost written for Disruptive Inequalities, and a commentary from the author on the predicaments they encountered in the writing process, this Element shares, and confronts, the ways we fabricate stories and use writing to resist. It makes visible the choices, practices, and reflections that have led to the writing of our stories and offers the tools we have used to fabricate them, to all those who may find them meaningful to appropriate, adapt, and translate to fight the struggles that they want to fight. These tools are formulated in a way for writers to develop their own methods of storytelling and activism. The authors hope this Element contributes to an ongoing debate on how writing serves banal resistance.

Fontaine, Lise / Jones, Katy / Schoenthal, David, Referring in Language: An Integrated Approach. 256 pp. 2023:4 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <697-1545>
ISBN 978-1-107-14347-0 hard ¥27,065.- (税込) GB£ 95.00 *

Referential expressions include terms such as determiners, proper names, noun phrases, pronouns, and all other expressions that we use to make reference to things, beings, or events. The first of its kind, this book presents a detailed, integrated account of typical and atypical uses of referential expressions, combining insights from discourse, cognitive, and psycholinguistic literature within a functional model of language. It first establishes a foundation for reference, including an overview of key influences in the study of reference, the debates surrounding (in)definiteness, and a functional description of referring expressions. It then draws on a variety of approaches to provide a comprehensive explanation of atypical uses, including referring in an uncollaborative context, indefinite expressions used for definite reference, reference by and for children, and finally metonymic reference with a special focus on metonymy in medical contexts. Comprehensive in scope, it is essential reading for academic researchers in syntax, discourse analysis, and cognitive linguistics.

Nini, Andrea, A Theory of Linguistic Individuality for Authorship Analysis. (Elements in Forensic Linguistics) 75 pp. 2023:5 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <697-1546>
ISBN 978-1-108-97138-6 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *

Authorship analysis is the process of determining who produced a questioned text by language analysis. Although there has been significant success in the performance of computational methods to solve this problem in recent years, these are often methods that are not amenable to interpretation. Authorship analysis is in all effects an area of computer science with very little linguistics or cognitive science. This Element introduces a Theory of Linguistic Individuality that, starting from basic notions of cognitive linguistics, establishes a formal framework for the mathematical modelling of language processing that is then applied to three computational experiments, including using the likelihood ratio framework. The results propose new avenues of research and a change of perspective in the way authorship analysis is currently carried out.

生得性論争入門
van der Hulst, Harry, A Mind for Language: An Introduction to the Innateness Debate. 2023:9 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <697-1549>
ISBN 978-1-108-47157-2 hard ¥29,914.- (税込) GB£ 105.00 *
ISBN 978-1-108-45649-4 paper ¥10,538.- (税込) GB£ 36.99 *

How does human language arise in the mind? To what extent is it innate, or something that is learned? How do these factors interact? The questions surrounding how we acquire language are some of the most fundamental about what it means to be human and have long been at the heart of linguistic theory. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to this fascinating debate, unravelling the arguments for the roles of nature and nurture in the knowledge that allows humans to learn and use language. An interdisciplinary approach is used throughout, allowing the debate to be examined from philosophical and cognitive perspectives. It is illustrated with real-life examples and the theory is explained in a clear, easy-to-read way, making it accessible for students, and other readers, without a background in linguistics. An accompanying website contains a glossary, questions for reflection, discussion themes and project suggestions, to further deepen students understanding of the material.

Wang, Yinying, Professional Interpreting Programmes in China: Constructing a Curriculum Improvement Model. (Routledge Studies in East Asian Interpreting) 280 pp. 2023:7 (Routledge, UK) <697-1263>
ISBN 978-1-03-230191-4 hard ¥35,612.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *

Wang presents the status quo of curriculum development in professional interpreting programmes in China and points to the urgency to devise a curriculum improvement model to ensure the relevance of such programmes against a changing reality. She covers the European experience in interpreter education that China can learn from and discusses opportunities arising from previous examples for China to iterate upon in the context of the broader and more diverse professional reality. The book puts the nature of professional interpreters and, in turn, interpreting programmes, under the concurring lens of curriculum studies and the sociology of professions. Wang identifies eight stakeholders which call for changes in interpreting programmes, and six categories of competence (or sub-competence) which see a progression from undergraduate to graduate and lifelong-learning stage. These serve as curriculum goals and encapsulate the recommended changes in institutional curricula. The conceptualised model is then described with a case study on Chinese-English retour training to show its applicability and relevance in interpreting programmes on the ground. Offering insight for academics, practitioners and trainee interpreting students and of relevance to a broader interpreting community looking to set up or reform interpreting curricula, Wang's book will help ensure curriculum improvement that is theoretically sound and practically viable.
