Aly, El-Hussein A. Y.,
The Graeco-Arabic Translation Movement. (Elements in Translation and Interpreting) 75 pp. 2023:6 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <702-1773>
ISBN 978-1-00-938560-2 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *
To encompass the history of Arabic practice of translation, this Element re-defines translation as combination, a process of meaning-remaking that synthesizes multi reality. The Arabic translators of the Middle Ages did not simply find an equivalent to the source text but combined its meaning with their own knowledge and experience. Thus, part of translating a text was to add new thought to it. It implies a complex process that Homi Bhabha calls "cultural hybridity," in which the target text combines knowledge of the source text with knowledge from the target culture, and the source text is different from the target text "without assumed or imposed hierarchy." Arabic translations were a cultural hybridity because the translators added new thought to their target texts, and because saw their language as equal to the Greek.

Agreement beyond the Verb: Unusual Targets, Unexpected Domains. 336 pp. 2023:11 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <702-1774>
ISBN 978-0-19-289756-5 hard ¥23,646.- (税込) GB£ 83.00 *
This book explores unusual patterns of agreement, one of the most intriguing and theoretically challenging aspects of human language. Agreement is typically thought to reflect a structural relationship between a verb and its arguments within the clause, and all major theories of agreement have been developed with the centrality of this relationship in mind. But beyond the verb, items belonging to practically every other part of speech have been found to function as agreement targets, including adpositions, adverbs, converbs, nouns, pronouns, complementizers, and other conjunctions. Data on these targets provide rich insights into the structural domains in which agreement operates, demonstrating that unusual targets can be associated with unexpected domains that are independent of the agreement domain of the verb. Following an introduction to the typology of unusual targets and unexpected domains across the world's languages, the chapters in this volume provide detailed treatments of a wide range of rare and complex agreement phenomena in seven languages, belonging to five different language families of Eurasia and the Pacific. The contributions are all based on novel data collected by the authors, which detail the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic properties of agreement on non-verbal targets within the clause.

Forensic Linguistics in Australia: Origins, Progress and Prospects. (Elements in Forensic Linguistics) 75 pp. 2023:6 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <702-1775>
ISBN 978-1-00-916810-6 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00
This Element presents an account of forensic linguistics in Australia since the first expert linguistic evidence in 1959, through early work in the 1970s-1980s, the defining of the discipline in the 1990s, and into the current era. It starts with a consideration of some widespread misconceptions about language that affect the field and some problematic ideologies in the law, which underly much of the discussion throughout the Element. The authors' report of forensic linguists' work is structured in terms of the linguistic, interactional and sociocultural contexts of the language data being analysed, whether in expert evidence, in research, or in practical applications of linguistics in a range of legal settings. The Element concludes by highlighting mutual engagement between forensic linguistic practitioners and both the judiciary and legal scholars, and outlines some of the key factors which support a critical forensic linguistics approach in much of the work in the authors' country.

Agency and Intentions in Language. (Brill Research Perspectives in Humanities and Social Sciences 6 / Brill Research Perspectives in Linguistics) 110 pp. 2023:6 (Brill, NE) <702-1776>
ISBN 978-90-04-67978-8 paper ¥9,180.- (税込) EUR 39.00
Our sense of agency and ability to distinguish between intentional and accidental actions are fundamental for social interaction. They allow us to plan and perform joint actions and assign responsibility for our own actions and those of others. Research on the nature of agency and intentions has been very fruitful over the last few decades in philosophy, linguistics, and psychology. However, trully new discoveries could be made only when we engage in interdisciplinary discussions. This volume is the result of such discussions.

Hickey, Raymond,
Life and Language Beyond Earth. 400 pp. 2023:10 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <702-1777>
ISBN 978-1-00-922641-7 hard ¥7,122.- (税込) GB£ 25.00 *
Have you ever wondered whether we are alone in the universe, or if life forms on other planets might exist? If they do exist, how might their languages have evolved? Could we ever understand them, and indeed learn to communicate with them? This highly original, thought-provoking book takes us on a fascinating journey over billions of years, from the formation of galaxies and solar systems, to the appearance of planets in the habitable zones of their parent stars, and then to how biology and, ultimately, human life arose on our own planet. It delves into how our brains and our language developed, in order to explore the likelihood of communication beyond Earth and whether it would evolve along similar lines. In the process, fascinating insights from the fields of astronomy, evolutionary biology, palaeoanthropology, neuroscience and linguistics are uncovered, shedding new light on life as we know it on Earth, and beyond.

Jenks, Christopher Joseph,
New Frontiers in Language and Technology. (Elements in Applied Linguistics) 75 pp. 2023:7 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <702-1778>
ISBN 978-1-00-918439-7 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) describes the technological transformations that are incrementally, but radically, changing everyday life practices. Like previous industrial revolutions, technological advancements are so pervasive and impactful that everything from an individual's sense of identity and understanding of the world to the economic success of an entire industry are profoundly altered by 4IR innovation. Despite the significance of 4IR transformations, little applied linguistic research has examined how these emergent technologies collectively transform human behavior and communication. To this end, this Element identifies key 4IR issues and outlines how they relate to applied linguistic research. The Element argues that applied linguists are in an excellent position to contribute to such research, as expertise in language and communication is critical to understanding 4IR issues. However, to make interdisciplinary and wider societal contributions, applied linguists must rethink how 4IR technologies can be harnessed to more efficiently publish and disseminate timely research.

Johanson, Lars,
Code Copying: The Strength of Languages in Take-over and Carry-over Roles. (Brill's Studies in Language, Cognition and Culture 38) 200 pp. 2023:8 (Brill, NE) <702-1779>
ISBN 978-90-04-54843-5 hard ¥23,304.- (税込) EUR 99.00
This book presents Lars Johanson's Code-Copying Model, an integrated framework for the description of contact-induced processes. The model covers all the main contact linguistic issues in their synchronic and diachronic interrelationship. The terminology is kept intuitive and simple to apply. Illustrative examples from a wide range of languages demonstrate the model's applicability to both spoken and written codes. The fundamental difference between 'take-over' copying and 'carry-over' copying is given special value. Speakers can take over copies from a secondary code into their own primary code, or alternatively carry over copies from their own primary code into their variety of a secondary code. The results of these two types of copying are significantly different and thus provide insights into historical processes.

Leclercq, Benoit,
Linguistic Knowledge and Language Use: Bridging Construction Grammar and Relevance Theory. 233 pp. 2023:12 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <702-1780>
ISBN 978-1-00-927320-6 hard ¥27,065.- (税込) GB£ 95.00 *
One of the key challenges in linguistics is to account for the link between linguistic knowledge and our use of language in a way that is both descriptively accurate and cognitively plausible. This pioneering book addresses these challenges by combining insights from Construction Grammar and Relevance Theory, two influential approaches which until now have been considered incompatible. After a clear and detailed presentation of both theories, the author demonstrates that their integration is possible, and explains why this integration is necessary, in order to understand exactly how meaning comes about. A new theoretical model is offered that provides ground-breaking insights into the semantics-pragmatic interface, and addresses a variety of topics including the nature of lexical and grammatical concepts, procedural meaning, coercion and idiom processing. Systemic Functional Grammar: A Text-Based Description of English, Spanish and Chinese. 468 pp. 2023:6 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <702-1781>
ISBN 978-1-00-928500-1 hard ¥34,188.- (税込) GB£ 120.00
Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a usage-based theory of language, founded on the assumption that language is shaped entirely by its various functions in the contexts in which it used. The first of its kind, this book advances SFL by applying it comparatively to English, Spanish and Chinese. By analysing English alongside two other, typologically very different major world languages, it shows how SFL can effectively address two central issues in linguistics - namely typology and universals. It concentrates in particular on argumentation, carefully explaining how descriptions of nominal group, verbal group and clause systems and structures are motivated, and draws on examples from key texts which display a full range of ideational, interpersonal and textual grammar resources. By working across three world languages from a text-based perspective, and demonstrating how grammar descriptions can be developed and improved, the book establishes the foundations for a groundbreaking functional approach to language typology.

Interlingual Readings of Political Discourse: Translation, Interpreting and Contrastive Analysis. (Utrecht Studies in Language and Communication 39) 290 pp. 2024 (Brill, NE) <702-1782>
ISBN 978-90-04-54022-4 paper ¥20,950.- (税込) EUR 89.00 *
This volume provides a timely reflection of this growing interdisciplinary field of translation, interpreting and political discourse. It includes very recent work carried out by researchers from a range of countries. The chapters illustrate new trends and perspectives in the interdisciplinary research field, and extends previous research. The volume covers both translation and interpreting modes in monolingual, bilingual and multilingual contexts. It features the convergences and synergies between the two modes, and thus provides new insights on these different modes of language communication. Furthermore, instead of situating translation in politics or politics in translation, the volume treats political discourse and translation/interpreting at equal levels, thus allowing more room for the discussion of the interdisciplinary nature of the field.

Rozov, Nikolai S.,
The Origin of Language and Consciousness: How Social Orders and Communicative Concerns Gave Rise to Speech and Cognitive Abilities. (World-Systems Evolution and Global Futures) 406 pp. 2023:7 (Springer, GW) <702-1783>
ISBN 978-3-031-30629-7 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99 *
This book presents an evolutionary theory of the origin and step-by-step development of linguistic structures and cognitive abilities from the early stages of anthropogenesis to the Upper Paleolithic. Emphasizing the social nature of the human mind and using an extended version of C.Hempel's explanatory logic, the author proves that language and consciousness emerged and evolved through the daily efforts of our ancestors to overcome mutual misunderstandings in increasingly complex social orders with increasing tasks on memory, thinking, and normative regulation of behavior, with the addition of new and new communicative concerns. The book addresses questions such as the following:What unique social conditions led to the emergence of the first protosyllables and protowords? What steps enabled the crossing of the "linguistic Rubicon" (between animal communication and human speech)? Why were syllables and phonemes needed? How did ourancestors overcome the difficulties of misunderstanding? How, when, and why did ancient people learn to speak in turns? Why did they begin to talk about past and distant events? What is consciousness and how did it evolve along with language? How many original languages were there and why are there roughly 200 philas (language macrofamilies)? How and why did the number of languages and the degree of their complexity change in pre-written history?Did the Romance languages really evolve from Latin?Accordingly, the book will appeal to scholars in various disciplines who are interested in a better understanding of the cognitive aspects of anthropogenesis and the ancient origins of language and consciousness.

Scott, Clive,
The Philosophy of Literary Translation: Dialogue, Movement, Ecology. 320 pp. 2023:11 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <702-1292>
ISBN 978-1-00-938995-2 hard ¥24,216.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *
While reading transforms texts through memories, associations and re-imaginings, translation allows us to act out our reading experience, inscribe it in a new text, and engage in a dialogic and dynamic relationship with the original. In this highly original new study, Clive Scott reveals the existential and ecological values that literary translation can embody in its perceptual transformation of texts. The transfer of a text from one language into another is merely the platform from which translation launches its larger ambitions, including the existential expansion and re-situation of text towards new expressive futures and ways of inhabiting the world. Recasting language as a living organism and as part of humanity's ongoing duration, this study uncovers its tireless capacity to cross perceptual boundaries, to multiply relations between the human and the non-human and to engage with forms of language which evoke unfamiliar modes of psycho-perception and eco-modelling.
