Ho, Mavis (Nga-Ki), Appraisal and the Transcreation of Marketing Texts: Persuasion in Chinese and English. (Routledge Advances in Translation and Interpreting Studies) 148 pp. 2023:10 (Routledge, UK) <703-390>
ISBN 978-1-03-226933-7 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This book contributes to growing debates on transcreation, applying an appraisal framework to texts from luxury brands in Chinese and English to reveal new insights into marketing transcreation and set out transcreation as an area of study in its own right. The volume charts the origins of the term "transcreation", emerging from the interplay of established concepts of translation, creation, localisation, and adaptation and ongoing debates on what should be transcreated and how. Using these dialogues as a point of departure, Ho outlines a way forward for transcreation research by advocating for the use of an appraisal framework, taken from work in systemic functional linguistics and employed to evaluate persuasion in language. In focusing on marketing texts from the websites of three luxury brands in English and Chinese, the book explores how this approach can surface fresh perspectives on the different ways in which the processes and practices of marketing transcreation are used to generate persuasion across languages. The volume looks ahead to the implications for other language pairs and the applications of the appraisal framework to understand transcreation practice of other genres, such as literary texts. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in translation studies and marketing studies.

Koller, Veronika / Krendel, Alexandra / Aiston, Jessica, The Language of Gender-Based Separatism: A Comparative Analysis. (Elements in Language, Gender and Sexuality) 75 pp. 2023:8 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <703-1349>
ISBN 978-1-00-921686-9 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *

This Element shows how two social movements, lesbian separatism and Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW), reflect the changing and complex (anti-)feminist ideologies of their time. The authors outline the historical and political background of those discourses and how they are influencing contemporary gender relations. The materials analysed comprise ten manifestos, which are examined with a combination of data-led discourse analysis and theory-led argumentation analysis. The manifestos are similar in that both sets of authors construct homogenous in-groups and out-groups as well as dichotomies between them. There are some differences though in how this is linguistically realised and who is classified as an out-group. Both groups cast social actors in particular roles and establish ethical norms, but strategic planning and utopias are more prominent among lesbian separatists. Freedom, advantage and authority are central in each group's argumentation, but lesbian separatists also stress humanitarianism while MGTOW focus on financial matters.

Drechsel, Emanuel J., Wilhelm von Humboldt and Early American Linguistics: Resources and Inspirations. 2023:12 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <703-1716>
ISBN 978-1-108-83304-2 hard ¥29,914.- (税込) GB£ 105.00

Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835), an early pioneer in the philosophy of language, linguistic and educational theory, was not only one of the ?rst European linguists to identify human language as a rule-governed system -the foundational premise of Noam Chomsky's generative theory - or to re?ect on cognition in studying language; he was also a major scholar of Indigenous American languages. However, with his famous naturalist brother Alexander 'stealing the show,' Humboldt's contributions to linguistics and anthropology have remained understudied in English until today. Drechsel's unique book addresses this gap by uncovering and examining Humboldt's in?uences on diverse issues in nineteenth-century American linguistics, from Peter S. Duponceau to the early Boasians, including Edward Sapir. This study shows how Humboldt's ideas have shaped the ?eld in multiple ways. Shining a light on one of the early innovators of linguistics, it is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the ?eld.

Gallego, Angel J. / Ott, Dennis (eds.), Cartography and Explanatory Adequacy. (Oxford Studies in Theoretical Linguistics 85) 352 pp. 2023:12 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <703-1717>
ISBN 978-0-19-886793-7 hard ¥25,641.- (税込) GB£ 90.00 *

This book contributes to the ongoing empirical, conceptual, and meta-theoretical debates regarding the merits and drawbacks of the cartographic program in linguistic theory. Although cartography has its roots in the study of the left periphery, its empirical scope has expanded significantly over the years and now covers a wide range of domains such as argument structure, modification, and constituent order. The chapters in this volume offer a critical examination of the cartographic assumption that there is a rich array of functional projections whose hierarchical order is fixed and determined by Universal Grammar. They discuss the nature of these cartographic hierarchies and their relation to the central theoretical goal of explanatory adequacy: are functional hierarchies an irreducible property of Universal Grammar (hence constituting part of the "residue" beyond the scope of principled explanation), or are they emergent, deriving from independent principles that do not require a further enrichment of Universal Grammar?

Perego, Elisa, Audio Description for the Arts: A Linguistic Perspective. (Routledge Advances in Translation and Interpreting Studies) 200 pp. 2023:10 (Routledge, UK) <703-1720>
ISBN 978-0-367-68100-5 hard ¥39,886.- (税込) GB£ 140.00 *

This book traces the development of audio description (AD), a form of audiovisual translation delivered orally and consumed aurally that makes visual elements accessible primarily to people who are visually impaired, and in particular, art AD as an emergent sub-genre.Perego reflects on the static arts and the role of modern museums as key sites for art AD and multisensory environments that create memorable experiences for visitors. Based on professional, pre-recorded British and American English AD scripts, this book outlines the textual and linguistic features of art AD and its most relevant textual patterns. It explores diverse AD practices across different contexts, including stand-alone ADs for specific paintings and sculptures that can be consumed independently to enhance the appeal and accessibility of cultural environments. Moreover, the book investigates AD tours, which provide descriptions of a selection of interconnected artworks while also assisting, through focused instructions, visually impaired individuals in navigating the museum space, as well as touch tours, which incorporate procedural instructions on how to experience three-dimensional art or reproductions through tactile senses. Offering unique insights and future research directions for this growing area, this volume will be of interest to students and scholars in translation studies and media accessibility.

Rothwell, Andrew / Way, Andy / Youdale, Roy (eds.), Computer-Assisted Literary Translation. (Routledge Advances in Translation and Interpreting Studies) 216 pp. 2023:10 (Routledge, UK) <703-1722>
ISBN 978-1-03-241300-6 hard ¥39,886.- (税込) GB£ 140.00 *

This collection surveys the state of the art of computer-assisted literary translation (CALT), making the case for its potential to enhance literary translation research and practice. The volume brings together early career and established scholars from around the world in countering prevailing notions around the challenges of effectively implementing contemporary CALT applications in literary translation practice which has traditionally followed the model of a single translator focused on a single work. The book begins by addressing key questions on the definition of literary translation, examining its sociological dimensions and individual translator perspective. Chapters explore the affordances of technological advancements and availability of new tools in such areas as post-edited machine translation (PEMT) in expanding the boundaries of what we think of when we think of literary translation, looking to examples from developments in co-translation, collaborative translation, crowd-sourced translation and fan translation. As the first book of its kind dedicated to the contribution CALT in its various forms can add to existing and future scholarship, this volume will be of interest to students and scholars in Translation Studies, especially those working in literary translation, machine translation and translation technologies.

Silva, Daniel N. / Lee, Jerry Won, Language as Hope. 2024:1 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <703-1723>
ISBN 978-1-00-930652-2 hard ¥27,065.- (税込) GB£ 95.00 *

Although it feels like we live in a time of seeming hopelessness, this pioneering book illustrates what language can teach us about the practice, logic, and feasibility of hope in the twenty-?rst century. Silva and Lee highlight how people living in Brazilian urban peripheries, who have grown accustomed to unrelenting prejudice and violence on an everyday basis, use language to survive and imagine futures that are worth aspiring to. In so doing, this book foregrounds how language becomes a matter of survival for these communities. It provides a thorough theorization of how language can produce conditions of hope, moving away from the idea of language merely as a tool of communication and toward something that can meaningfully impact social realities. Innovative and engaging, it is essential reading for researchers and students in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Yan, Haiping / Jin, Haina / Gladston, Paul (eds.), Translation Studies and China: Literature, Cinema, and Visual Arts. 304 pp. 2023:9 (Routledge, UK) <703-1724>
ISBN 978-1-03-256397-8 hard ¥39,886.- (税込) GB£ 140.00 *

Focusing on transculturality, this edited volume explores how the role of translation and the idea of (un)translatability in the transformative complementation of different civilizations facilitates the transcultural connection between Chinese and other cultures in the modern era.Bringing together established international scholars and emerging new voices, this collection explores the linguistic, social, and cultural implications of translation and transculturality. The 13 chapters not only discuss the translation of literature, but also break new ground by addressing the translation of cinema, performance, and the visual arts, which are active bearer of modern and contemporary culture that are often neglected by academics. Our volume is ground-breaking in its trans-disciplinary attention to the study of translation related to China and such a trans-disciplinality should serve as a ground-breaking leverage for other areas of humanities as well. Through an engagement with these diverse fields, the title aims not only to reflect on how translation has reproduced values, concepts, and cultural forms, but also to stimulate the emergence of new possibilities in the dynamic transcultural interplay between China and the diverse national, cultural-linguistic, and contexts of Europe, the Americas, and Asia. It shows how cultures have been appropriated, misunderstood, transformed, and reconstructed through processes of linguistic mediation, as well as how knowledge, understanding, and connections have been generated through transculturality. The book will be a must read for scholars and students of translation studies, transcultural studies, and Chinese studies.
