Daghigh, Ali Jalalian / Ang, Pei Soo, Humanizing Critical Journalistic Translation Studies: Insights from the Chinese Context. (Routledge Advances in Translation and Interpreting Studies) 148 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <742-734>
ISBN 978-1-041-02430-9 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Jalalian Daghigh and Ang's book provides new insights into the relationships between translation, journalism, ideology, and power via a humanizing approach. Carving out a niche within Journalistic Translation Studies, the book introduces and expands on Critical Journalistic Translation Studies (CJTS). The authors critically evaluate the state of the art while advocating for humanizing research by focusing on the experiences of both translators and readers.Using the Chinese journalistic translation landscape as a case study, the book investigates the sociopolitical and socio-cognitive dimensions of journalistic translation. Through applications of sociological, cognitive, and critical discourse approaches, it sheds light on the working conditions of news translators, their cognitive and emotional experiences, the influence of power and ideology on the translation process, the effects of ideological manipulation on translated news texts, and the subsequent impact of such news on audience perceptions and emotions.By opening fresh methodological pathways, not only does this book illuminate the Chinese journalistic translation landscape, but it also opens new avenues in CJTS. This book is an indispensable resource for academics, postgraduate students, and researchers in Translation Studies, Media Studies, and Journalism Studies, offering a transformative focus on humanizing CJTS.

Tang, Gladys (ed.), Sign Language in Mainstream Education for the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing Students in Asia. 126 pp. 2025:5 (Routledge, UK) <742-930>
ISBN 978-1-041-04290-7 hard ¥38,016.- (税込) GB£ 135.00

This book describes two ways of incorporating sign language in mainstream education, reflecting direct and indirect communication between and among the participants, teachers and students alike. The focus is on how deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students participate in and react to this educational context with signing support. The book focuses on two means of recruiting sign language to support deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students in mainstream education in Asia. The first approach is educational sign interpreting, which has been adopted to support signing DHH students in mainstream classrooms in Taiwan. Contributions report on a questionnaire survey with post-hoc interviews examining the reactions of students, parents, a resource teacher and an interpreter towards providing this service in the education system. The second approach is co-enrollment, which is bringing a critical mass of DHH students into the mainstream classroom for them to study with hearing children, supported by either a Deaf teacher or a teacher highly proficient in signing, who can co-teach with the regular teacher and co-share responsibilities in taking care of the whole class of students. The chapters exemplifying this approach report on the effects of co-enrollment on DHH students' language development and academic attainment. This book was originally published as a special issue of Deafness & Education International.

機械翻訳と翻訳理論
Asscher, Omri, Machine Translation and Translation Theory. 208 pp. 2025:6 (Routledge, UK) <742-1073>
ISBN 978-1-041-00059-4 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
ISBN 978-1-041-00066-2 paper ¥10,415.- (税込) GB£ 36.99

Pervasive and ubiquitous, machine translation systems have been transforming communication and understanding across languages and cultures on a historical scale. Focused on both Neural Machine Translation tools, such as Google Translate, and generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Omri Asscher pursues the juncture between machine translation and the diverse, often competing, frameworks of human translation theory. He shines a light on the subtleties of the intersection between the two: the places where machine translation corresponds well with the ideas that have been developed on human translation throughout the years, and the places where machine translation seems to challenge translation theory, and perhaps even require that we rethink some of its basic assumptions.Machine Translation and Translation Theory reflects the need for an accessible, panoramic view on the subject. It offers a detailed discussion of various points of theoretical interest: definitions of translation; equivalence in translation; aesthetics of translation; translation ethics; translation as cross-cultural communication; and translation as a historical agent. This is key reading for researchers and students in translation studies, as well as scholars of AI-mediated communication, and computer scientists interested in how machine translation architectures correspond with the understanding of translation in the humanities.

翻訳技術と社会ハンドブック
Baumgarten, Stefan / Tieber, Michael (eds.), The Routledge Handbook of Translation Technology and Society. (Routledge Handbooks in Translation and Interpreting Studies) 482 pp. 2025:6 (Routledge, UK) <742-1075>
ISBN 978-1-032-22142-7 hard ¥64,768.- (税込) GB£ 230.00

The Routledge Handbook of Translation Technology and Society offers the first comprehensive and critical exploration of translation technologies in the context of globalised multilingual societies within an increasingly AI-dominated world. This handbook calls for a fundamental rethinking of traditional approaches to translation, examining the ethical, ideological, socioeconomic, and environmental implications of digital tools and practices, such as professional AI-driven translation, 'everyday' machine translation, crowdsourcing translation, or platform-based translation work. It provides deep insights into pressing issues such as the commodification of language, inclusivity in so called low-resource languages, data colonialism, and labour exploitation. By questioning conventional science narratives and advocating for sustainable, inclusive, and equitable applications of translation technologies, this handbook empowers readers to engage critically with current trends and challenges in the digital age. Readers will benefit from an interdisciplinary approach that combines novel theoretical foundations with empirical research and practical case studies. It serves as a foundational reference and a springboard for (critical) future research in an evolving - sociotechnical - translation ecosystem where the blurring boundaries between human and machinic agents foster new modes of translator-machine interaction. This handbook is an essential resource for academics, researchers, and professionals in translation studies, digital humanities, science and technology studies, or (digital) discourse studies.

Cowley, Stephen / Doering, M. / Vork Steffensen, S. (eds.), Ecolinguistics and Emplacement: Language, Languaging and Place. (Routledge Studies in Linguistics) 224 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <742-1076>
ISBN 978-1-032-32847-8 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This edited volume contributes to recent theoretical work in ecolinguistics that treats language as, not about nature, but of nature.Through a dialogical interplay of theoretical and empirical work, chapters apply ecological concepts of language, languaging, and emplacement to a multiplicity of issues, settings, and place-worlds. Empirically, the chapters meander through a universe of chimpanzees engaged in problem solving, children playing marbles, political constitutions, agricultural dictionaries, Sicilian nature reserves, children's experiences of devastating outbreaks of foot and mouth disease, expressions of sorrow across closed borders, and the linguistic conquest of uninhabited islands. By attending to locale, sense of place, and location across this diversity, the volume evokes new empirical, methodological, and practical horizons that allow ecolinguists to ask how people and their emplacement are affected by language and languaging, and how the effects of practices impact on, not just human lifeworlds, but also trillions of bioecologies. This book will be of interest to students and scholars interested in ecolinguistics, discourse analysis, applied linguistics, language contact, environmental humanities, and human and social geography.

ISBN 978-1-78892-969-1 paper ¥12,094.- (税込) GB£ 42.95 *

Challenging the boundaries of linguistics as a field, and transgressing the limitations of genre in writing about language, this book explores the possibilities of what the authors call a 'hospitable linguistics'. It offers a critical discussion of how linguistics endeavors to domesticate, subdue and integrate both people and languages into existing academic structures and theories, and how as a discipline academic linguistics has barely begun to move beyond its colonial, patriarchal and conservative foundations. In this book, leading figures in their fields reflect on their own and others' practices and experiences in three key areas: the agency and power of refugees and migrants; Indigenous people's (in)hospitable responses to strangers; and hospitable language as expressed through art, music and artefacts. As a whole, the book represents a crucial intervention in attempts to fashion a new, more integrative, responsible and respectful linguistics that makes way for the ideas of people who are often the object of study.

Garutti, Gerald, Watch Your Words: A Manifesto for the Arts of Speech. Tr. by R. Geuss. 144 pp. 2025:2 (Polity Pr., UK) <742-1080>
ISBN 978-1-5095-6729-4 hard ¥5,362.- (税込) US$ 25.00

Never before has humanity done so much talking... But is anyone listening? For that matter, are people ever speaking to each other? We need to acknowledge that speech, as we know it, has never been so debased. We live in a world full of empty, degraded, and potentially violent speech: a daily reality that confronts us in the workplace, in the media, on the streets, on the internet and in our political lives. Verbal clashes are commonplace, while proper dialogue is rare.Gerald Garutti pushes for a return to a more constructive and responsible form of speech. He lays the groundwork for a humanistic approach: one which, contrary to the dominant culture of ignoring and humiliating others, emphasizes listening to them and mastering speech as a way of connecting. The arts of speech can contribute to the reconciliation of tensions in our society and to the realization of our full humanity.Watch Your Words is a stunning manifesto for anyone interested in how we might better communicate with each other.

This Element outlines current issues in the study of speech acts. It starts with a brief outline of four waves of speech act theory, that is, the philosophical, the experimental, the corpus-based and the discursive approaches. It looks at some of the early experimental and corpus-based methods and discusses their more recent developments as a background to the most important trends in current speech act research. Discursive approaches shift the focus from single utterances to interaction and interactional sequences. Multimodal approaches show that the notion of 'speech act' needs to be extended in order to cover the multimodality of communicative acts. And diachronic approaches focus on the historicity of speech acts. The final section discusses some open issues and potential further developments of speech act research.

This Element gives an introduction to the emerging discipline of natural language ontology. Natural language ontology is an area at the interface of semantics, metaphysics, and philosophy of language that is concerned with which kinds of objects are assumed by our best semantic theories. The Element reviews different strategies for identifying a language's ontological commitments. It observes that, while languages share a large number of their ontological commitments (such as to individuals, properties, events, and kinds), they differ in other commitments (for example, to degrees). The Element closes by relating different language and theory-specific ontologies, and by pointing out the merits and challenges of identifying inter-category relations within a single ontology.
