Tien Foo, Sumit and Swee Hoon's latest instalment in the Kiasunomics series presents day-to-day issues in interesting ways, drawing on deep research to offer interdisciplinary insights such as the correlation between rising sea levels and fluctuating property prices, and the impact of mobile payments on business creation. The Kiasunomics series makes economics fun and accessible, and I hope it inspires readers to contemplate why economics matters in today's world and how it influences the Singaporean way of life.'Extracted from the Foreword by Chan Chun SingMinister for Education, SingaporeHave you ever wondered whether the Build-To-Order scheme affects marriage and divorce? Do you think haze affects physical and intellectual characteristics of babies? Is there a relationship between foreign buyers and property transactions? Are women more strategic taxi drivers? These and more are discussed in Kiasunomics (c)3 in an easy-to-understand manner. Each chapter, written simply and light-heartedly, is self-contained and covers a different research topic conducted at the National University of Singapore. The research findings are discussed in conversational terms to help readers understand the influences and consequences of the decisions made by all of us, using simple economic logic. This edition covers topics including the effects of climate change on property prices, purchase behavior when there is an online security breach, effects of parental bankruptcy on children, food orders during COVID lockdown, and many more. The book brings to light the relevance of research, often seen as esoteric, on our daily life and decision-making. It also bears on policy implications, particularly issues on housing, retirement, and financing.

Khan, Muhammad A.,
Islamic Economics and Human Well-Being: Justice, Moderation and Sharing. (Studies in Islamic Finance, Accounting and Governance) 272 pp. 2024:5 (E. Elgar, UK) <718-177>
ISBN 978-1-03-533368-4 hard ¥29,914.- (税込) GB£ 105.00 *
The study of Islamic economics provides an interesting complement to conventional economics as they both study economic behaviour to enhance human well-being. Muhammad Akram Khan articulates an expert view on how to use distinct approaches to achieve this in the context of Islamic economics. In this comprehensive book, Akram Khan not only illustrates the empirical evidence found in traditional economics but also explores the divine revelation found in the Qur'an and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad. Highlighting the five dimensions of Islamic justice, namely equality, accountability, reciprocity, fairness and empowering the weak, the book emphasises moderation in the creation and consumption of wealth and outlines a plan for sharing resources with those in need. It goes a step further from material well-being to demonstrate how enhancing human happiness is the goal for a modern society. This visionary read will be an excellent resource for academics involved in teaching, researching, and writing on Islamic economics. It will also be of great benefit to policy makers and economic managers in Muslim and Western countries who would like to focus on social and economic justice in their societies.

Research Handbook on Intergenerational Inequality. (Elgar Handbooks on Inequality) 400 pp. 2024:5 (E. Elgar, UK) <718-178>
ISBN 978-1-80088-825-8 hard ¥61,253.- (税込) GB£ 215.00 *
The Research Handbook on Intergenerational Inequality is motivated by a core question in social science: to what extent does one's family background and childhood experience predict success in life? This innovative Research Handbook provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary account of research on intergenerational inequality, focusing on its origins in sociology and economics.Expert contributors explore patterns of intergenerational persistence, how mobility varies for different groups, and the processes through which intergenerational inequality is produced. Chapters cover a range of novel topics including the intergenerational reproduction of elites, parental joblessness and its intergenerational impact, and the role of migration for intergenerational mobility. Bringing together experts from across the globe and from a variety of social science disciplines, the Research Handbook campaigns for greater cross-fertilisation between disciplinary boundaries and encourages future researchers to develop a deeper understanding of current mobility in order to better inform and improve social policy. This incisive Research Handbook will serve as a crucial reference point for researchers, scholars and students of social sciences, sociology, social policy, and economics. Its practical applications will also be highly beneficial for policymakers and practitioners working in social affairs.

Kirsh, Yoram,
The Prosperous Society: From Economics of Sarcity to Economics of Abundance. (World Scientific-Economic Growth Centre Contemporary Series in Modern Economy 2) 228 pp. 2023:12 (World Scientific, SI) <718-179>
ISBN 978-981-12-8371-0 hard ¥18,972.- (税込) US$ 88.00
The classical economic theory fails to truly describe the economies of prosperous societies. This is because traditional economics deals with the allocation of resources in conditions of shortage, while the urgent economic problems of a prosperous society are mainly associated with conditions of abundance. This book presents the hallmarks of a prosperous society and analyzes the special problems that it faces. It differentiates between the two types of economies: the traditional one which is based on scarcity, and the prosperous economy which is able to fulfill almost everyone's needs. The book analyzes what motivates these two types of economies, what challenges them, and what features or manifestations of success and failures characterize their current statuses and their futures. This book is an original and pioneering work. It analyzes the economy of the prosperous society from the perspective of the third decade of the 21st century. It is an interesting, engaging text on a theme that we seldom see and read about.

Social Sustainability in Unsustainable Society: Concepts, Critiques and Counter-Narratives. (Ethical Economy 67) 137 pp. 2024:1 (Springer, GW) <718-180>
ISBN 978-3-031-51365-7 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book offers a unique, critical exploration of concepts and practices of social sustainability through both a critical concept analysis as well as empirical studies of practices that undermine social sustainability. It addresses the questions: What is the main role of social relations and social practice in the transition from fundamentally unsustainable societies and local practices towards a sustainable future? And how does economical sustainability reduce or enhance social sustainability? The chapters in this work define and understand social sustainability in relation to principles such as solidarity, community, welfare, reciprocity, and regenerative co-existence. These principles are analyzed through the lens of emotions, respect, carefulness, sensitivity, and art, to establish counter-principles and narratives to principles like growth, efficiency, capitalism, and mastery of nature. Such counter-narratives to mainstream understandings and histories of economy aid in shedding light on a variety of different aspects of sustainability. The book presents a methodological plurality including conceptual and empirical approaches, praxis-oriented and inductive approaches. The chapters present interdisciplinary approaches concerning welfare, ecology, sociology, organization and economy, social psychology and aesthetics and therefore appeal to a broad audience of scholars and academics.

Capitalism in the Platform Age: Emerging Assemblages of Labour and Welfare in Urban Spaces. (Springer Studies in Alternative Economics) 371 pp. 2024:3 (Springer, GW) <718-181>
ISBN 978-3-031-49146-7 hard ¥11,766.- (税込) EUR 49.99
ISBN 978-3-031-49149-8 paper ¥9,412.- (税込) EUR 39.99 *
This open access book provides an overview of urban digital platforms such as Airbnb and Deliveroo, which, along with Amazon, Google, Facebook, and other IT companies, constitute by now the infrastructures for other businesses to operate on and for our social life to go on. These platforms serve as standards-based techno-economic systems that simultaneously capture cooperation through remote coordination and organize labor via algorithm management.Based on a three-years research project, this contributed book outlines a general theory of platform capitalism that conceives these platforms not only as technical devices, but as generative engines that operate at the interface of several aspects, such as digitalization of forms of social cooperation; algorithm-based management of labor and participation; and private and vertical appropriation of profits. These elements are somehow iconic of the capitalist evolution of the last decades, and they open up a reflection on new forms of "primitive accumulation" (in particular regarding data), on the mechanisms used to capture and extract social surplus value, and on the logistic-financial dimensions of capital. Finally, in light of the transformations associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the authors examine how platforms can evolve into hegemonic organizational structures.Assuming we are all already living in the age of the platform, this book takes a multifaceted approach-combining sociology with urban studies, and political sciences with economics-to grasp the challenges our societies face in terms of ensuring fair economic growth, adequate social protections, and labor rights. It will appeal to anyone interested in digital platforms and how they are changing the organization of labor, urban spaces, and forms of governance.

Artificial Intelligence: Economic Perspectives and Models. 2024:5 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <718-182>
ISBN 978-1-00-948308-7 hard ¥29,914.- (税込) GB£ 105.00 *
ISBN 978-1-00-948311-7 paper ¥9,968.- (税込) GB£ 34.99 *
Is Artificial Intelligence a more significant invention than electricity? Will it result in explosive economic growth and unimaginable wealth for all, or will it cause the extinction of all humans? Artificial Intelligence: Economic Perspectives and Models provides a sober analysis of these questions from an economics perspective. It argues that to better understand the impact of AI on economic outcomes, we must fundamentally change the way we think about AI in relation to models of economic growth. It describes the progress that has been made so far and offers two ways in which current modelling can be improved: firstly, to incorporate the nature of AI as providing abilities that complement and/or substitute for labour, and secondly, to consider demand-side constraints. Outlining the decision-theory basis of both AI and economics, this book shows how this, and the incorporation of AI into economic models, can provide useful tools for safe, human-centered AI.

Decoding Economic Crises. 148 pp. 2023:12 (World Scientific, SI) <718-183>
ISBN 978-1-80061-510-6 hard ¥10,348.- (税込) US$ 48.00
Constantly bandied about, 'crisis' has tended to be a much-overused word. Understanding the economy and its future challenges requires a detailed and precise analysis of what an economic crisis is. This book sets out to do just that. It first provides a deep historical context of what economic theory says about crises and their perpetual return in the form of a cycle. It then looks at what lessons might be learned from such cycles. Since 1945, the world economy has been dominated by the United States, so an analysis of recent crises must necessarily consider public policy response in this country. Decoding Economic Crises attempts to answer the question of whether American leadership has emerged unscathed from the damage inflicted by the 1975, 1992, 2009 and 2020 recessions and their legacies of debt.Looking forward to the future, there is a particular focus on environmental change. The book interrogates whether devastating crises might ensue, reminiscent of the 'nutritional trap' theorised by Nobel Prize winner Angus Deaton. Finally, Decoding Economic Crises asks if there will be a return to times of extreme scarcity as seen prior to the mid-18th century.

ISBN 978-3-031-50717-5 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99 *
This volume embarks on a research journey that focuses on the processes of economic and social value creation in the 21st century. Exploring topics such as relational rationality, cultural complexity, shared value creation, and relational contracts, this book reveals the mechanisms and processes involved in governing the complexities of inter-sectoral relationships in a networked society. Given its scope and focus, this book will appeal to scholars of economics, economic sociology, organizational studies, and related fields.
