P.ガレニャーニ著 資本理論、余剰アプローチ、有効需要
Garegnani, Pierangelo,
Capital Theory, the Surplus Approach, and Effective Demand: An Alternative Framework for the Analysis of Value, Distribution and Output Levels. Ed. by R. Ciccone. (Springer Studies in the History of Economic Thought) 472 pp. 2024:11 (Springer, GW) <702-238>
ISBN 978-3-031-23642-6 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99 *
This book presents a representative set of Pierangelo Garegnani’s (1930-2011) works on the theory of value and distribution. It features a selection of essays, chosen by Garegnani himself, concerning central aspects of his work: first and foremost, the continuation and development of Piero Sraffa's effort to elaborate an alternative to the dominance of marginalist thought on the theory of value and distribution. Garegnani articulates and extends Sraffa’s contribution in two directions: the critique of marginalist theory with respect to the treatment of capital, and the reappraisal of the surplus approach to distribution proper to classical political economy. In turn, these two strands of analysis are combined in Garegnani’s project to make the Keynesian principle of effective demand more robust and general by dropping the unnecessary elements of marginalism and linking it to the classical explanation of distribution. This book reveals how Garegnani’s contribution has advanced the degree of theoretical elaboration for several issues that fall within the developmental paths of economic analysis opened by Sraffa and Keynes. It begins with a comprehensive introduction in which Garegnani illustrates the conceptual path that links the contributions presented here. The starting point of this intellectual journey is Garegnani’s previously unpublished doctoral thesis ‘A Problem in the Theory of Distribution from Ricardo to Wicksell,’ prepared at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Piero Sraffa and Maurice Dobb, which is followed by various essays selected by Garegnani on the critique of marginalist theories, the classical approach to value and distribution, and the role of aggregate demand for the long-run trends of output and capital accumulation. The book is a must-read for all scholars interested in the resumption and development of the classical approach, as well as economic theory in general, and the history of economic thought.

The Truth of Liberal Economy: Jacques Rueff and John Maynard Keynes. (Springer Studies in the History of Economic Thought) 132 pp. 2023:7 (Springer, GW) <702-239>
ISBN 978-981-9908-40-0 hard ¥25,890.- (税込) EUR 109.99 *
This book provides historical, theoretical, and biographical perspectives on two giants of contemporary economics, Jacques Rueff (1896-1978) and John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946). The former French bureaucrat and academician championed classical economics; the latter British economist founded macro-economics criticizing the classical school. Depending upon archival sources, including personal correspondences between the above two figures, the book describes furious debates between them and surrounding them.In fact, the two economists proposed contrasting diagnosis over almost every event in contemporary world economy: the reparations problem, the Great Depression, the gold exchange standard, and the Bretton Wood System. Keynes appraised managed currency to cope with unemployment, criticizing the classical gold standard; Rueff believed the function of market mechanism, blaming the state intervention. The book highlights deep influence of Rueff, rather largerthan Keynes, in Europe before and after WWII.The perspective of the book reaches today's economic issues. The classical view of Rueff was shared in Mont Pelerin Society, a cradle of neo-liberalism. Rueff's market-friendly view paved way to the neo-liberal reforms which took place after the 1980s. The classical market theory of Rueff, together with dialogues with the labor unions, prepared the social background of the European Union. This book thus reveals the truth of liberal economy, from the 20th to 21st centuries.

Moscati, Ivan,
The History and Methodology of Expected Utility. (Elements in Decision Theory and Philosophy) 75 pp. 2023:7 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <702-241>
ISBN 978-1-00-919826-4 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *
This Element offers an accessible but technically detailed review of expected utility theory (EU), which is a model of individual decision-making under uncertainty that is central for both economics and philosophy. The Element's approach falls between the history of ideas and economic methodology. At the historical level, it reviews EU by following its conceptual evolution from its original formulation in the eighteenth century through its transformations and extensions in the mid-twentieth century to its more recent supersession by post-EU theories such as prospect theory. In reconstructing the history of EU, it focuses on the methodological issues that have accompanied its evolution, such as whether the utility function and the other components of EU correspond to actual mental entities. On many of these issues, no consensus has yet been reached, and in this Element the author offers his view on them.

アメリカの法・政治・経済思想 1870~1970年
Parker, Kunal M.,
The Turn to Process: American Legal, Political, and Economic Thought, 1870-1970. (Cambridge Historical Studies in American Law and Society) 346 pp. 2023:11 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <702-242>

ISBN 978-1-00-933523-2 paper ¥7,404.- (税込) GB£ 25.99 *
In The Turn to Process, Kunal M. Parker explores the massive reorientation of American legal, political, and economic thinking between 1870 and 1970. Over this period, American conceptions of law, democracy, and markets went from being oriented around truths, ends, and foundations to being oriented around methods, processes, and techniques. No longer viewed as founded in justice and morality, law became a way of doing things centered around legal procedure. Shedding its foundations in the 'people,' democracy became a technique of governance consisting of an endless process of interacting groups. Liberating themselves from the truths of labor, markets and market actors became intellectual and political techniques without necessary grounding in the reality of human behavior. Contrasting nineteenth and twentieth century legal, political, and economic thought, this book situates this transformation in the philosophical crisis of modernism and the rise of the administrative state.

R.U.エイヤーズ著 経済学の歴史と将来
Ayres, Robert U.,
The History and Future of Economics. 402 pp. 2023:4 (Springer, GW) <702-237>
ISBN 978-3-031-26207-4 hard ¥11,766.- (税込) EUR 49.99 *
The purpose of this book is three-fold. The first purpose is to posit that the fundamental substance of the universe is energy, and that energy is required (consumed) for any material transformation, or information transmission. The labor theory of value, articulated by the physiocrats and elaborated by Adam Smith, David Ricardo, J.B. Say and Karl Marx was a rough first approximation of the value creation process, in the 17th and 18th centuries, but is now obsolete. Labor is now (mostly) performed by machines, not by humans (or animals). The second aim of the book is to argue that the economy is a living (open) system -- an "island of order" -that exists far from both thermodynamic and economic equilibrium. Order is achieved by dissipating a flux of exergy. Economists frequently emphasize the equilibrium assumption, introduced originally by Leon Walras in 1854. But in reality, biological systems and human social systems are dissipative cycles, far from both thermodynamic equilibrium, and economic equilibrium, yet stable and capable of evolution, driven by the solar exergy flux. The third aim of the book is to re-emphasize, that - being open - the economic system cannot be regarded as a collection of individual competitive utility-maximizing transactions. There are, increasingly, important possibilities for cooperation instead of competition. Moreover third party effects, both "bads" (externalities) and the "public good" (happiness) - need to be incorporated into the socio-economic decision making process.

Grossman, Henryk,
Henryk Grossman Works. Volume 4: Writings on Economic and Social History. Ed. by R. Kuhn. (Historical Materialism Book Series 292) 516 pp. 2023:9 (Brill, NE) <702-115>
ISBN 978-90-04-67858-3 hard ¥39,076.- (税込) EUR 166.00 *
The pioneering and still relevant Marxist studies of the transition from feudalism to capitalism in this collection are, with one exception, published in English here for the first time. Before his better-known work on Marx's theories, Henryk Grossman wrote about the economic history of Galicia, the Polish province annexed by the Habsburgs, drawing on very extensive primary research. His later, devastating critique of Weber argument about Protestantism and the rise of capitalism is also included in this volume.
