Normative Economics in the History of Economic Thought: Marx, Mises, Friedman and Popper. (Routledge Advances in Social Economics) 352 pp. 2024:6 (Routledge, UK) <719-191>
ISBN 978-1-03-242339-5 hard ¥41,310.- (税込) GB£ 145.00 *
This book examines the role of normative economics in the writings of Karl Marx, Ludwig von Mises, Milton Friedman and Karl Popper. The book shows that while distinguishing positive from normative economics can be helpful, this distinction should not minimize the importance of normative economics or reject the possibility of offering objective evaluations of social phenomena and policies in normative economics. The book offers a critical assessment of the attempts by Marx, Mises and Friedman to reduce scientific economics to the positive analysis of social phenomena alone. Through a meticulous analysis of their work, the book shows that their positive theories fail to justify their evaluations of economic phenomena and policies. The book then draws on the writings of Popper to maintain that we should place normative economics at the center of economics. The book argues that normative economics can choose the norms underlying its evaluations of social situations and policies objectively and relies on some of Popper's ideas to offer some criteria that can facilitate the selection of these norms. The book will be of interest to economists, historians of economic thought, philosophers of economics and political theorists and philosophers.

Economic Growth and Long Cycles: A Classical Political Economy Approach. (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy) 296 pp. 2024:6 (Routledge, UK) <719-192>
ISBN 978-1-03-255867-7 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
Contemporary capitalism is characterized by periods of vigorous economic growth and periods of slow or even negative growth. This book draws on the classical political economy approach to consider both economic cycles and economic growth and draw conclusions about the inherent instability of the modern economy. The book shows that the work of the old classical economists (Smith and Ricardo) and Marx is theoretically sound and capable of providing answers to both growth and cycles. It also demonstrates the potential and natural integration of growth and cycles in a single model. The microeconomic foundation of this model is the labor theory of value, which continues with the General Law of Capital Accumulation, the Law of the Falling Rate of Profit, and the movement of the Industrial Reserve Army of Labour. Finally, a dynamic model of growth-cum-cycles is constructed consisting of the evolution and interaction of five key variables, namely, the rate of profit, the propensity to invest in fixed capital, technological change, the reserve army of labour, and the rate of capital devaluation. The analysis demonstrates that economic growth and cycles are not disconnected from each other, as they have been treated in the literature, but rather interdependent aspects of the same evolutionary process of a capitalist economy. This book will interest readers in the history of economic thought, economic growth and development, macroeconomics, and political economy.

The Economic Thought of Hilaire Belloc: A Christian Alternative to the Servile State. (Routledge Studies in the History of Economics) 200 pp. 2024:6 (Routledge, UK) <719-193>
ISBN 978-1-03-254610-0 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
Hilaire Belloc's thinking on the economy constitutes, by its originality and acuity, a heterodox approach of the greatest interest in addressing the economic problems of his time and those of our own.Belloc's main interest as a writer were on economics and history, and his works were praised by economists such as F. A. Hayek or Wilhelm Roepke and political philosophers such as Robert Nisbet and Russell Kirk, but his contributions have been often overlooked. To address that oversight, this book inserts Belloc?s ideas into the academic dialogue on economics. Despite not being a trained economist, Belloc developed his thought based on a coherent system rooted in original elements such as the scholastic tradition. Belloc's Christian or "post-scholastic" economics updates and renews many of the scholastic concepts to make them applicable to the economy of the world he knew. Issues such as the impossibility of socialism, entrepreneurship, the effects of monetary policy and credit on economic cycles, or the sustainability of the welfare state were studied by Belloc from a very singular perspective.Describing and interpreting the economic thought of Belloc, the book will be of interest to scholars and students, as well as general readers, interested in heterodox perspectives on economics.

Economy and Theology: Cusanus' Theory of Value. (Economics and Humanities) 160 pp. 2024:6 (Routledge, UK) <719-147>
ISBN 978-1-03-231515-7 hard ¥14,241.- (税込) GB£ 49.99 *
Economy and Theology: Cusanus's Theory of Value, a study from the field of the history of philosophy, responds to the present-day interest in what is referred to as economic theology. This study aims to show that value (valor), one of the fundamental concepts of contemporary philosophy and economics, has its genealogy in the thought of Nicholas of Cusa. Starting from the economic context (the concept of price/pretium), Cusanus proposes the theory of value that, on the one hand, is objectively rooted in the Divine act of creation (God as the Minter) and, on the other hand, requires reading by human beings (human mind as a banker). While this theory appears in Cusanus's late work The Bowling-Game, it is underpinned by his theory of knowledge, theory of human beings and human cognition against the background of his vision of the universe. Thus, the aim of the book is to try to answer the question about the role and tasks of human beings as a principal player in economic and social game. This description of human position emerges from the creative tension between human philosophical and theological reflection and certain economic solutions.
