April, Kurt / Dharani, Babar / April, Amanda Ronita (eds.), Lived Experiences of Exclusion in the Workplace: Psychological & Behavioural Effects. (International Perspectives on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) 316 pp. 2023:3 (Emerald, UK) <689-119>
ISBN 978-1-80043-309-0 hard ¥31,416.- (税込) US$ 140.00 *

Exclusion is the process by which some people are out-grouped, or the state experienced by those alienated and/or marginalised. Lived Experiences of Exclusion in the Workplace shares the emotional expressions of those who have faced alienation and marginalisation - from subtle to traumatic. Their stories reveal an abundance of factors which lead to exclusion and offer insights for the reader into instances of systemic-, organisational- and personal exclusion, as well as providing guidance on how to trigger belonging and inclusion through various, often simple measures. The presence of greater diversity in our organisations, as well as growing demands for equity, inclusion and social justice, compel us to address stumbling blocks. These findings collectively place remedial responsibilities in the hands of institutions, organisations, leaders, managers and employees who form the powerful/privileged in-group, as well as those who are excluded.

Leicht, Kevin T. / Fennell, Mary, Crisis in the Professions: The New Dark Age. 264 pp. 2023:3 (Routledge, UK) <689-120>

Crisis in the Professions: The New Dark Age presents a wide, panoramic view into the state of modern professional work in the United States. Struggling labor markets, growing inequalities, and increasing amounts of cultural and political mistrust are but a few major changes undermining the people seen as essential in society and needed to compete in a globalized, highly skilled world. The authors explore this profound dilemma through a variety of methods, each one allowing them to identify significant areas of change and concern. They address macro-level social, political, and economic forces at the root of these changes and pair these explanations with illustrative vignettes of young, would-be professionals to paint a comprehensive, albeit complicated picture of professional work in the 21st century. Amid a backdrop of increasing globalization, technological advance, and cultural devaluation of expertise, the authors point attention to the mounting implications these shifts have for new generations of professionals and consider alternative models to address signs of precarity and instability within the professions. With piercing insight and compelling evidence, Crisis in the Professions probes deeply enough to stimulate scholars and researchers invested in the sociological study of work and provides a valuable, versatile read for advanced students in these areas as well.

Oezsoy, Zeynep / Senyuecel, Mustafa / Oba, Beyza, Gender Diversity and Inclusion at Work: Divergent Views from Turkey. (Routledge Focus on Business and Management) 144 pp. 2022:12 (Routledge, UK) <689-122>
ISBN 978-1-03-215593-7 hard ¥13,253.- (税込) GB£ 45.99 *

The purpose of this book is to investigate gender diversity practices and discourse developed by listed companies in Turkey. It pursues this aim by advancing knowledge about business relations affecting workplace gender diversity. The research builds on Bourdieu's field approach and implements a Thematic Analysis following Braun and Clarke's (2006) guidelines. The findings of the book are based on data collected from unstructured interviews and secondary sources such as the official documents of national and international organizations, newspapers, legislation, and web pages of the related parties. The findings suggest that the implementation of gender diversity practices may require a transformation of perspective and the conditions regarding the political, economic, and cultural realm for realization of a pervasive movement. Due to the conservative and patriarchal culture, authoritarian rule and neoliberal policies, gender diversity and inclusion are not seen as issues that should be resolved through the commitment and collaboration of a field. Consequently, diversity management practices are instrumentalized by the business community as a means for corporate communication and image building rather than actively building a diverse workforce.
