Feld, Serge,
International Migration, Remittances and Brain Drain: Impacts on Development. (Demographic Transformation and Socio-Economic Development 13) 168 pp. 2021:8 (Springer, GW) <664-940>
ISBN 978-3-030-75512-6 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99 *
This book provides an analysis of theoretical and empirical researches on the effects of remittances and brain drain on the development of less developed countries (LDCs). It analyzes the most recent global, regional and national data as well as the arguments for and against the emigration of highly skilled personnel and remittances, thereby highlighting policies aimed at optimizing the link between migration and development. The book examines in depth the arguments against "brain drain", namely the loss of skilled labor, wasted public investment in higher education, and reduced tax revenues. It also presents the arguments in favor, emphasizing on the transfer of scientific knowledge, the incentive effect of increased education spending, and participation in international networks. It addresses the central issue of emigration of medical personnel from developing countries and its consequences on the population. The book focuses on the effects of remittances on poverty and inequalities. They improve health conditions, raise education levels and empower women. Positive effects include the stabilizing function of remittances and the improvement of external accounts. Other effects are subject to conflicting assessments such as the reduction of labor supply and the "Dutch disease". The focus is on institutions who integrate economic, social and political incentives in order to establish remittances at the heart of development policies. The book provides a reference for students and research centers devoted to development economics, centers for international migration studies, and research units focusing on population, migration, and development.

Lam, David / Elsayed, Ahmed,
Labour Markets in Low-Income Countries: Challenges and Opportunities. 240 pp. 2021:12 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <664-942>
ISBN 978-0-19-289710-7 hard ¥23,646.- (税込) GB£ 83.00 *
Labour Markets in Low-Income Countries addresses some of the most important issues affecting labour markets in low-income countries. It builds heavily on the new research evidence that has been provided by the programme on Growth and Labour Markets in Low-Income Countries (GLMLIC), which was created as a partnership between UK Department for International Development (now part of the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office) and the German IZA- Institute of Labor Economics in 2011. The programme has contributed to the growing interest in understanding labour markets in the poorest countries by producing high-quality research outputs and policy documents, as well as through interactions with various stakeholders and impacts on programs and policies. Across nine chapters dealing with different aspects of labour markets in developing countries, David Lam and Ahmed Elsayed provide lessons about what kinds of labour market programmes and policies can make a difference. Some of these lessons are about the difficulties that many well-intentioned programmes face when they are implemented. Vocational training programmes, for example, one of the most widely implemented labour market interventions, have a disappointing record when subjected to rigorous evaluation. Public Works programmes have also had mixed results when rigorously evaluated. Other lessons are more positive, however. Some of the modifications and additions to traditional programmes that have been tested recently in different projects have had encouraging results. The book provides evidence of what works and what doesn't in areas such as skills training, worker-firm matching, rural labour markets, migration, youth unemployment, and women's empowerment. This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations.

Goldin, Claudia,
Career and Family: Women's Century-Long Journey toward Equity. 344 pp. 2021 (Princeton U. Pr., US) <664-3876>
ISBN 978-0-691-20178-8 hard ¥6,025.- (税込) US$ 27.95 *
Winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in EconomicsA renowned economic historian traces women's journey to close the gender wage gap and sheds new light on the continued struggle to achieve equity between couples at homeA century ago, it was a given that a woman with a college degree had to choose between having a career and a family. Today, there are more female college graduates than ever before, and more women want to have a career and family, yet challenges persist at work and at home. This book traces how generations of women have responded to the problem of balancing career and family as the twentieth century experienced a sea change in gender equality, revealing why true equity for dual career couples remains frustratingly out of reach.Drawing on decades of her own groundbreaking research, Claudia Goldin provides a fresh, in-depth look at the diverse experiences of college-educated women from the 1900s to today, examining the aspirations they formed-and the barriers they faced-in terms of career, job, marriage, and children. She shows how many professions are "greedy," paying disproportionately more for long hours and weekend work, and how this perpetuates disparities between women and men. Goldin demonstrates how the era of COVID-19 has severely hindered women's advancement, yet how the growth of remote and flexible work may be the pandemic's silver lining.Antidiscrimination laws and unbiased managers, while valuable, are not enough. Career and Family explains why we must make fundamental changes to the way we work and how we value caregiving if we are ever to achieve gender equality and couple equity.
