Ferri, Piero, Income Distribution, Growth and Unemployment: A Complex Dynamic Approach. (New Directions in Modern Economics) 256 pp. 2022:3 (E. Elgar, UK) <666-646>
ISBN 978-1-80220-600-5 hard ¥27,090.- (税込) GB£ 94.00 *

Piero Ferri expertly broadens the analysis of the canonical growth cycle approach by presenting a Minsky-Harrod model, examining how the relationship between income distribution, growth and unemployment becomes increasingly complex. Exploring this new technique to generate a process of growth, based not only on history but disequilibrium, he investigates the current income distribution debate further and the challenges it faces. Written in a succinct yet comprehensive style, Piero Ferri begins by addressing the basic principles, followed by an in-depth look at growth cycle models and how the Minsky-Harrod integrated model would help to unravel the current complexities. The empirical analysis reaches insightful conclusions by justifying the existence of a variety of results and by studying the distributive loop in a dynamic context which is prone to instability. Teachers of macroeconomics and scholars will find this an invaluable read and will benefit from the practical study and results. Researchers interested in labour economics and political economy will also find this a thought-provoking book.

Ghosh, Bimal, The 2018 Global Migration Compact: A Major Breakthrough or an Opportunity Lost or Both? 90 pp. 2021:11 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <666-647>
ISBN 978-3-030-82862-2 hard ¥14,582.- (税込) EUR 59.99

This book analyses the 2018 Global Compact for Migration and the need for a multilateral agreement. The constraints and challenges of these kinds of agreements are discussed, with particular attention given to variations in labour needs and interests. A background history on migration multilateral agreements is provided, from 1927 onwards, to give context to the recent negotiations. The limitations of the 2018 deal, including the failure to set out the consequences of forced migration, the lack of clear recognition of migration as a global process, and absence of responsibility sharing arrangement, are also discussed. This book aims to highlight how the 2018 Compact for Migration can be built upon in the future to create harmony within global migration. It will be relevant to researchers and policymakers interested in migration and labour economics.

Jelonek, Magdalena, Universities and the Labour Market: Graduate Transitions from Education to Employment. (Routledge Studies in Labour Economics) 176 pp. 2021:12 (Routledge, UK) * paper 2023 <666-648>

Debate surrounding the employability of graduates has been around for many decades, and interest in this area has grown particularly since the start of this century. Tackling this relevant area of scholarship, this book uses an innovative approach to analyse the relationship between the university and the labour market from different perspectives, taking into account both sociological and economic theories. Key areas explored include work transition, graduate employability, and the effects of public interventions/initiatives which are aimed at matching the competences of graduates to labour market needs. The chapters summarise several years of author original research, including study on the employability of graduates in Poland more specifically, and the effects of their public interventions to increase graduate employment and facilitate entry into the workforce (e.g. Commissioned Fields of Study, Competences Development Programme). More generally, university - labour market relations are analysed from three perspectives: micro (understood as individual characteristics shaping educational and occupational choices and decisions), and meso and macro (e.g. features of the education system and such as the strength of the signal sent by HE diplomas; the macroeconomic situation and the condition of the labour market and the state of debate on general and employability competences and its implications). The conclusions made are pertinent given ongoing debates around graduate mismatch in the labour market, as well as the questioning of tuition fees and the role of the university in society more broadly. The interdisciplinary nature of this book makes it of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the areas of sociology, economy, public policy, and also to practitioners designing educational interventions themselves.

Wenkai, Sun, A Study of Labor Mobility in China. (China Perspectives) 336 pp. 2021:12 (Routledge, UK) * paper 2023 <666-517>
ISBN 978-1-03-218439-5 hard ¥43,230.- (税込) GB£ 150.00 *
ISBN 978-1-03-218440-1 paper ¥11,524.- (税込) GB£ 39.99 *

The title investigates rural labor mobility in China since 2003, an important phenomenon in the process of Chinese economic transition, influential in economic growth at the macro level and individual wellbeing at the micro level.Based on empirical analysis, the study identifies and evaluates the characteristics, driving forces and impact of the migration and mobility of the rural labor force. The following factors are considered to impact rural workers' mobility decisions and are thoroughly discussed in each chapter: (1) convergence in the level of regional income, (2) industrial structure and the age structure of the workforce, (3) the household registration system, (4) the income gap, (5) the issue of children that are left behind, (6) the health status of rural migrant workers and (7) their social networks. Drawing on new research methods, the final chapter reassesses the impact of rural parents' migration to the city and the overall wellbeing of their children left behind at home, challenging the well-accepted view that there is a negative correlation between the two.The book will appeal to scholars and students interested in labor economics, Chinese economy, sociology, demography, migrant population and especially labor mobility in China.
