17~21世紀のグローバルな農業労働者
Bauer, Rolf / Meerkerk, Elise van Nederveen (eds.), Global Agricultural Workers from the 17th to the 21st Century. (Studies in Global Social History 50) 470 pp. 2023 (Brill, NE) <688-309>
ISBN 978-90-04-52494-1 hard ¥26,497.- (税込) EUR 109.00 *

Agricultural workers have long been underrepresented in labour history. This volume aims to change this by bringing together a collection of studies on the largest group of the global work force. The contributions cover the period from the early modern to the present - a period when the emergence and consolidation of capitalism has transformed rural areas all over the globe. Three questions have guided the approach and the structure of this volume. First, how and why have peasant families managed to survive under conditions of advancing commercialisation and industrialisation? Second, why have coercive labour relations been so persistent in the agricultural sector and third, what was the role of states in the recruitment of agricultural workers? Contributors are: Elise van Nederveen Meerkerk, Josef Ehmer, Katherine Jellison, Juan Carmona, James Simpson, Sophie Elpers, Debojyoti Das, Lozaan Khumbah, Karl Heinz Arenz, Leida Fernandez-Prieto, Rachel Kurian, Rafael Marquese, Bruno Gabriel Witzel de Souza, Rogerio Naques Faleiros, Alessandro Stanziani, Alexander Keese, Dina Bolokan, and Janina Puder.

Albiez-Wieck, Sarah, Taxing Difference in Peru and New Spain (16th-19th Century): Negotiating Social Differences and Belonging. (European Expansion and Indigenous Response 40) 384 pp. 2022:9 (Brill, NE) <688-359>
ISBN 978-90-04-52163-6 hard ¥29,901.- (税込) EUR 123.00

This book addresses the negotiation of categorizations in colonial societies in Spanish America from a new vantage point: fiscality. In early modern empires (poll) taxes were a significant factor to organize and perpetuate social inequalities. By this, fiscal categorizations had very concrete effects on the daily life of the categorized, on their assets and on their labor force. They intersected with social categorizations such as gender, profession, age and what many authors have termed race or ethnicity, but which is denominated here, more accurately with a term from the sources, calidad. They were imposed by legislation from above and contested via petitions from below, the latter being a type of source scarcely analyzed until now.

Sanchez-Sibony, Oscar, The Soviet Union and the Construction of the Global Market: Energy and the Ascent of Finance in Cold War Europe, 1964-1971. 290 pp. 2023:4 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <688-367>
ISBN 978-1-108-83454-4 hard ¥24,497.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *

Oscar Sanchez-Sibony reveals the origins of our current era in the dissolution of the institutions that governed the architecture of energy and finance during the Bretton Woods era. He shows how, in the second half of the 1960s, the Soviet Union sought to dismantle the compartmentalized nature of Bretton Woods in order to escape its material ostracism and pave a path to global finance and exchange that the United States had vetoed during the 1950s and 1960s. Through the construction of a set of pipelines that helped Europe's energy regime change from coal to oil and gas, the Soviet Union succeeded in developing market relations and a relationship with Western capital as durable as the pipelines themselves. He shows how a history of the development of capitalism needs to integrate the socialist world in bringing about the new form of capitalism that regiments our lives today.

Gerstenberger, Heide, Market and Violence: The Functioning of Capitalism in History. (Historical Materialism Book Series 258) 818 pp. 2022:10 (Brill, NE) <688-232>
ISBN 978-90-04-52212-1 hard ¥55,913.- (税込) EUR 230.00 *

Despite their many disagreements when it comes to the subject of capitalism, Marxist and market-liberal approaches seem to agree about one thing: the economic structures of capitalist market society have made direct violence against the person not only superfluous, but economically counterproductive. Heide Gerstenberger's Market and Violence does not contest the thesis that there has been, in many places, a decline in the use of violence in the pursuit of profit; but it demolishes the assumption that this can be put down to the evolution of economic rationality. By means of a deep engagement with the concrete historical reality of capitalist economies, Gerstenberger establishes that, wherever capitalism has been tamed, this has been achieved only by a combination of energetic social contestation and political intervention. First published in German in 2018, the present English-language edition makes a sweeping history of capitalist violence by one of the preeminent theorists of capitalist society working today available to a wider readership.

Long, Zhiming / Herrera, Remy, Dynamics of China's Economy: Growth, Cycles and Crises from 1949 to the Present Day. (Studies in Critical Social Sciences 234) 239 pp. 2022:12 (Brill, NE) <688-259>
ISBN 978-90-04-52402-6 hard ¥33,304.- (税込) EUR 137.00

Chinese economic growth is an extraordinary phenomenon that deserves an original analysis. It is explained here from the origins of the People's Republic to the present day. Original first, because the authors have themselves reconstructed, on the country studied, statistical databases in time series for the stock of physical capital, the stock of human capital, expenditure on research and development, and Gini income inequality index. Original then, because the methodologies used screen a very wide range of theoretical currents: neoclassical, Pickettyan, and Marxist. Original finally, because the most modern tools of statistics and econometrics are mobilized to carry out this research. This book is aimed at economists and an audience with a solid knowledge of economics.

〔英語版〕中兼和津次編『毛沢東時代の経済-改革開放の源流をさぐる』
Nakagane, Katsuji (ed.), Studies on the Chinese Economy During the Mao Era. (Studies in Economic History) 244 pp. 2022:12 (Springer, GW) <688-260>
ISBN 978-981-19-5409-2 hard ¥38,892.- (税込) EUR 159.99 *

This book focuses on several specific features characterizing China's economy in the Mao era (1952-1976), and discusses whether and how they are related to the new economic strategy called "reforms and opening-up" under Deng Xiaoping's leadership with the result of the aftermath of well-known rapid growth. It provides the reader with basic knowledge of the continuity and discontinuity between the Mao and Deng eras. Readers are provided with some important clues for thinking about how Maoist China could have contributed to or alternatively prevented today's economic development. The topics addressed here include a brief overview of economic development under Mao, significant differences between Mao and Deng economics, and socialist transformations during the early Mao era. These include collectivization as well as communization and the effects on agricultural productivity; water supply construction drives utilizing a vast amount of rural surplus labor; rural finance; the effects on national savings, and the development of heavy and light industry. Also considered are the effects on the socialist industrialization, rural small-scale industries during the Cultural Revolution and their aftermath, and the realities of social life in a Third-front construction site promoted by Mao's military strategy in the 1960s. This book is highly recommended to readers who are interested in contemporary China's economy, particularly to scholars and students. The volume gives new insight into the background or preconditions that made possible historically rare miracles of the Chinese economy after Mao.
