E. Torabian, Juliette,
Wealth, Values, Culture & Education: Reviving the Essentials for Equality & Sustainability. (Diversity and Inclusion Research) 146 pp. 2022:4 (Springer, GW) <676-287>
ISBN 978-3-030-92892-6 hard ¥25,890.- (税込) EUR 109.99
"The book on offer here is fascinating. I do not think it is proper to classify it as 'philosophy' or 'sociology' or 'comparative education'. It is a work sui generis. Its cultural and historical range is extraordinary. Its illustrations are themselves arresting. Its literature is well outside disciplinary conventions and ranges across a number of languages. Mirabile dictu!" Professor Robert Cowen How have modern societies arrived at assuming: ? Culture is non-essential! ? Higher education is to train economically but not socio-politically active & engaged citizens! ? Economic wealth is the most important and prominent form of individual and national assets! ? Precariousness and socio-economic gaps are due to individuals' skills and capacities but not the failure of legal, political, and social systems! ? Freedom and equality are about "choices in having" but not necessarily about "ways of being and becoming"! Torabian argues these assumptions have not been constructed overnight and that COVID-19 has simply revealed their long-term fabrication and impact since the 1970s. This book is a fascinating voyage from the Middle Ages to today. It travels across different socio-cultural and political contexts drawing on arts, literary works, music, philosophical thoughts, economic and social concepts. It explores value systems and perceptions of wealth, poverty, and inequality and depicts the mutual impact and shifting role of (higher) education and culture and societies- particularly when related to social revolutions, political participation, and collective quests for equality and justice across time and spaces. Examining instrumentalisation of culture and education by the powerfulelite, Torabian delineates mechanisms through which values are fabricated and imposed on the masses. Drawing on some catching examples, she explains the authoritarian elite do so through visible rewards and punishments, while in capitalist societies power remains invisible and indirect. In both contexts, though, she skilfully demonstrates, the powerful groups transform the role and meaning of culture and higher education to facilitate normalisation and internalisation of their fabricated value system among the masses. Consequently, Torabian celebrates the recently accelerated quest for socio-ecological justice and sustainability across societies as a fortunate cosmopolitan shift. This, she believes, announces a rupture with the dominant capitalist ideology that has reigned the world since the 1970s through celebrity culture, media, propaganda, and by reducing higher education to an economic activity. The pursuit of a socio-ecological contract based on fairness, justice, and participation, Torabian argues, requires a renewed value system in which the socio-political role of culture and higher education can be revitalised. To this end, she introduces an innovative framework, i.e., the Big Wealth Pie (the topic of the author's upcoming book in this series) and proposes using transgressive education, resistance pedagogy, and teaching ignorance. She reckons such a social contract can be a global reality if "being" replaces the capitalist ideology of "having"; a process that can be started and reified by questioning what is or is not essential in socio-ecologically just societies. The book is thought-provoking and timely in questioning values and social institutions that have normalised precariousness, inequality, and poverty within a consumerist logic.

R&D Management Practices and Innovation: Evidence from a Firm Survey. (SpringerBriefs in Economics) 99 pp. 2022:3 (Springer, GW) <676-291>
ISBN 978-981-16-9796-8 paper ¥7,058.- (税込) EUR 29.99
This Open Access book provides a detailed account of firms' research and development (R&D) management practices, and whether and how R&D management practices are associated with the success and the nature (explorative or exploitive) of innovation, using a unique survey of firms in Japan. While there is wide agreement that innovation is a key determinant for growth of firms, there are few studies that systematically and quantitatively investigate what firms do in their R&D management to create innovation. Utilizing insights from theoretical and empirical studies on innovation, the authors focus on the following four aspects of R&D management: the organizational structure of R&D, staged project management for R&D projects, compensation and incentive schemes for R&D personnel, and a firm's risk preferences and corporate culture. The authors examine whether and how R&D management practices are linked to the likelihood of firms' success in making product innovations and the choice between explorative and exploitive innovation. The book furnishes vital information that can be used as a reference for future theoretical and empirical analyses of R&D management practices and innovation. This monograph is highly recommended to academics and practitioners who seek an in-depth and detailed analysis of R&D management. This is an open access book.

ISBN 978-3-030-95375-1 hard ¥25,890.- (税込) EUR 109.99
Effective risk management is a crucial part of the success of any organization. This book seeks to fill this important gap. Based on a study featuring a representative group of 722 companies, the author presents the various determinants of risk management effectiveness, including behavioural determinants (such as attitude to risk) as well as internal and external determinants (such as human and financial resources and the environment in which the organization operates). Along with a theoretical and practical overview of the various considerations from an international perspective, the reader will gain an insight into the implications for practice. Ultimately, this book formulates conclusions and recommendations for the improvement of tools and systems of enterprise risk management.

How to Save the FMCG Industry: A Practical Guide for Building Collaboration between Suppliers and Retailers. 240 pp. 2022:4 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <676-298>
ISBN 978-3-030-92985-5 hard ¥11,766.- (税込) EUR 49.99
In the fast-moving consumer goods industry (FMCG), collaboration is often cited as the logical way for suppliers and retailers to create value. Yet, suppliers' experience has shown that doesn't always happen, due in large part to the power of the retailer and a focus on the short term. In the last thirty years the industry has seen rapid change, with the growth of discounters, online shopping and consolidation of retailers. These changes have brought more opportunities to the industry but also more complexity, challenges and costs to manage for both sides. It's no secret that retailers have sought to leverage their increasing power with suppliers with never ending discussions of cost reduction, while suppliers attempt to engage them with discussions for longer term growth. This results in tension, with the retailer interested in short term activity and the supplier interested in supporting medium term growth. How can these two parties work together to deliver value to the consumer and shopper and ultimately, support the industry? This book presents first-hand research on how to navigate through these challenges. It identifies new and relevant tools and techniques to develop better, and more valuable collaboration between retailers and suppliers in today's challenging markets. In this notoriously secretive industry, the full value and opportunities of collaboration between retailer and supplier has yet to be fully accomplished. Traditional ways of working need to change if the industry has a chance of succeeding into the 21st century. With case studies, examples and practical frameworks, this book a brings a focus onto the industry, whilst at the same time providing implementable ideas, suggestions and solutions to improve value creation in this business-to-business context.

How Alternative is Alternative?: The Role of Entrepreneurial Development, Form, and Function in the Emergence of Alternative Marketscapes. (Advances in the Study of Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Economic Growth 29) 228 pp. 2022:8 (Emerald, UK) <676-301>
ISBN 978-1-80071-774-9 hard ¥23,716.- (税込) US$ 110.00 *
There is a growing class of entrepreneurs who, for a range of reasons, are working to create viable alternatives to mainstream production and consumption models. Existing literature that cuts across multiple fields illustrates the unique features, challenges, and value propositions of alternative forms of entrepreneurship. Yet, the complexities associated with how alternative marketscapes form and function remain "fuzzy." Volume 29 of Advances in the Study of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Economic Growth asks, "How alternative are alternative marketscapes?" In doing so, greater clarity is gained on the underlying economic, organizational, and social conditions and environments within which alternative marketscapes develop. The volume includes theoretical arguments and case studies that view alternative entrepreneurship not as co-existing with, but rather transforming mainstream entrepreneurship, and challenge the understanding of alternative entrepreneurship as being inherently altruistic. The exploration of ingenuity and innovation, in conjunction with cases that illustrate the diversity of alternative market contexts, generates organizational and system-level applications. The volume authors provide entrepreneurs and companies a concise understanding of alternative marketscapes that paves the way for development and success.

ISBN 978-1-83909-703-4 hard ¥20,482.- (税込) US$ 95.00 *
Entrepreneurship education as a potential antecedent of entrepreneurial spirit has too often been limited to Western theories. Entrepreneurship Education in Africa contributes to the body of knowledge of entrepreneurship education and youth entrepreneurship. The book uses Sierra Leone as a case study which dynamics are similar to other developing countries in Africa and around the world. Presenting a contextual approach to entrepreneurship education in resource-bounded contexts such as those currently faced by African countries, and in general, by developing countries, Mbeteh and Pellegrini offer a unique framework based on entrepreneurial competences and pedagogical approaches as a structure to build effective entrepreneurship education programmes within developing countries. Serving as a reference point for future researchers to engage with entrepreneurship education in developing countries, and occupying a gap in current research, Entrepreneurship Education in Africa is an important resource for scholars and professionals interested in business, entrepreneurship, and education. The Entrepreneurial Behaviour series is focused on expanding the scope of Entrepreneurial Behaviour theory and analysis and enriching practice by encouraging multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary approaches.

ISBN 978-1-80071-029-0 hard ¥23,716.- (税込) US$ 110.00 *
A place-led perspective of entrepreneurial development is becoming increasingly important, given narratives around entrepreneurial ecosystems, contexts, and the design of entrepreneurial institutions. In a world where we recognise entrepreneurial means, ends and values in terms of locations with meaning, this latest volume in Contemporary Issues in Entrepreneurship Research explores the phenomenon of Entrepreneurial Place Leadership. Defining Entrepreneurial Place Leadership in terms of how locations with entrepreneurial meaning are created, maintained, exploited, and amplified to generate future value, this edited collection considers how entrepreneurs lead in a complex entrepreneurial landscape. Leading international scholars act as guides through a heterogeneous landscape of individual dwellings, communities, and planned settlements. Topics include: an exploration of entrepreneurial responsibility to place in rural Nova Scotia; an analysis of culture in Entrepreneurial Support Organisations in Spain; a discussion of entrepreneurial implementation of policy in Italy; and the introduction of a tool for managing a complex solution ecosystem in Australia. Each chapter reflects upon the contribution of the author's research to academic theory and makes policy and practice recommendations - as such this book is a useful resource for academics, students, and entrepreneurial place leaders. Contemporary Issues in Entrepreneurship Research is an official book series of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE). Each volume is designed around a specific theme of importance to the entrepreneurship and small business community with articles collectively exploring and developing theory and practice in the field.

This systematic approach is illustrated with good practices by leading companies and includes an explanation of how sustainability reporting is making the leap into formal accounting standards set by the same body that oversees international financial accounting standards and what companies should do to prepare. The book’s combination of scholarly analysis and practical guidance make it a valuable resource for anyone seeking to navigate the new business context, whether from the perspective of a board director, C-suite executive, manager, policymaker, scholar or student.

Supply Chain Integration for Sustainable Advantages. 159 pp. 2022:2 (Springer, GW) <676-308>
ISBN 978-981-16-9331-1 hard ¥25,890.- (税込) EUR 109.99 *
This book offers a systematic literature review and a set of empirical studies on supply chain integration. Supply chain management is recognized as an essential means for firms to achieve competitive advantages, in which supply chain integration is regarded as the core for operational excellence: shorter lead time, lower inventory, faster delivery, and higher product and service quality. Using data from an international survey of manufacturing firms, an interrelated set of studies that investigate supply chain integration from different perspectives at multiple levels are conducted. Intra-organizational factors such as products, production systems, and socio-technical systems are examined to understand their effects on supply chain integration, indicating that firms need to implement different types of supply chain integration for specific competitive priorities. Then, the outcomes of supply chain integration, including its impact on risk management and sustainability management, are investigated from an inter-organizational perspective. The firm is embedded in a manufacturing network, a global supply chain, or both, and it can use supply chain integration as a strategic action for risks. Sustainability has been a vital issue for manufacturers, and supply chain integration can enhance its success. This book makes significant contributions to the relevant literature on supply chain integration and offers insights to supply chain managers in manufacturing industries.
