Anderson, Derek W. / Hamman, Jaco J., The Essence of Leadership: Maintaining Emotional Independence in Situations Requiring Change. 320 pp. 2024:5 (Productivity Pr., US) <717-340>
ISBN 978-1-03-273483-5 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
ISBN 978-1-03-273398-2 paper ¥8,543.- (税込) GB£ 29.99 *

The world is experiencing a leadership crisis. The Essence of Leadership addresses this concern by empowering self-differentiated leadership. The authors draw on family systems thinking, foundational to family therapy, psychodynamic theory, a recognized lens on human nature, and proven process management tools. The core message explored over seven chapters is that a leader's management of their own anxiety and the anxiety in a system has direct implications for their effectiveness in bringing change. The authors believe that leadership is mastering emotional and relational processes seeking to bring change according to clearly defined goals and ethical principles. As such, leadership is poorly defined as a cognitive-rational, economic, charismatic, democratic, data-based, or expert-driven "How to ..." skill. Rather, anxiety's flow and management greatly determine the likelihood of systemic transformation. After reading this book, leaders will be empowered with a growing understanding of the role anxiety plays in systemic change even as they are equipped to lead with less anxiety. Though the theory and practices in the book are applicable to all leaders, leadership is illustrated through numerous case studies from their extensive experience empowering leaders in both the for profit and nonprofit sectors. Callouts throughout the book, along with questions for reflection, invite the reader into deeper contemplation.

Cornuel, Eric / Thomas, Howard / Wood, Matthew (eds.), Business School Research: Excellence, Academic Quality and Positive Impact. (EFMD Management Education) 106 pp. 2024:2 (Routledge, UK) <717-342>
ISBN 978-1-03-273456-9 hard ¥9,398.- (税込) GB£ 32.99 *

This second book in the EFMD Management Education series explores business schools' increasing focus on, and search for, meaningful societal and economic research impact. This involves, in particular, co-operation and collaboration in both knowledge creation and implementation of the findings of academic research in practice.Business schools have a critical role to play in 'rewiring' our missions for research relevance, impact and reach, and in recognising needs and addressing real issues of society and economy. With cases from a range of international business schools, the book doesn't simply highlight the need for the dominant research model in business schools to evolve, but illustrates how this can happen in practice. In so doing, it opens the discussion on how the business school can contribute in very real ways to solving global and complex challenges such as climate change, rising inequalities, international isolationism, eroding democratic systems, and the spread of fake news. These are goals that the EFMD has championed since its inception, and this book will be of value and interest to policy makers and business leaders seeking insight into how management education will be shaped to support business and wider society, as well as those working in business schools and higher education leaders. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

This is a book about the future of sustainability. Regenerative Business Voices: Values-based Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Enterprises tells the stories of four regenerative organizations and the people who have founded them and guided them towards sustaining futures.Regenerative sustainability recognizes the urgency of transforming organizations to reverse the unsustainable pathways we are currently on. Regenerative businesses do not simply do less harm, or produce zero emissions, or optimize the efficient use of natural resources; they also restore and enhance well-being in social and ecological systems. The stories presented here are analyzed using the business ethics approach called Giving Voice to Values (GVV). Through the application of GVV principles, we uncover the processes involved in how regenerative businesses develop and function, and gain insights into how business leaders voice their deep convictions, overcome silencing rationalizations, normalize their execution of personal choice, discover deep purpose in their work, and draw on their personal histories to create new ways of doing business. We present and analyze these cases to understand how and why expressing values can be so crucial in developing sustainable businesses, and to provide practical examples of how individuals can generate enthusiasm, counter objections, gain allies, and prepare for and practice conversations that help them move forward. The book offers managers and sustainability consultants a new way of understanding some of the central dynamics involved in business ethics and organizational change for sustainability. It will be immensely valuable to educators, business students, and practitioners interested in sustainability, environmental business ethics, and corporate social responsibility topics.

The opportunities and challenges of blockchain implementations that arise in making technological innovations usable in corporate structures are discussed. In this respect, the book aims to deal with both the conceptual framework and the real challenges and opportunities encountered in practice regarding the blockchain applications. It is tried to contribute to the literature by presenting practical blockchain application suggestions to the readers on a scientific basis. It is a fact that blockchain technology is considered one of the most disruptive and revolutionary innovations after the invention of the internet. Blockchain technology, which was first used for cross-border payments, is coming up with a new application area in a different sector every day. The main purpose of Blockchain-based systems is to spread the "trust" service provided by a central intermediary to machines in transactions between two parties. Thus, it removes the need for this trust from the monopoly of a single intermediary. Blockchain implementation scenarios are to establish math-based trust in an untrusted environment. While exploring the complexity of blockchain applications in different sectors, the emerging risks are also examined from a management perspective. In particular, it is aimed to be a key work that the management levels of the enterprises can benefit from in the decision-making processes. It will be seen that blockchain technologies will be used unlimitedly in design, planning, management and decision making. This book will also introduce new visions for practitioners to use different blockchain technologies and methodologies to face problems.

Manfred Kets de Vries is one of the most authoritative voices on organizational dynamics, leadership, executive coaching, and psychotherapy today. In all his roles, he has noticed that questions are now, increasingly, coming back to one thing - the wider state of the world. Using an engaging and highly readable style throughout the book, Manfred helps us to make sense of the confusing and, some might say, psychotic times in which we now live.Revealing the darker side of leadership, Manfred explores the tendency for people to adopt 'sheeple' or herd-like behavior, the populist threat that we are facing, the dangers that come with feelings of perceived injustice, the rise of dictatorships, and the impact of Leviathan (neo-authoritarian) leadership behavior. Guided by theoretical concepts, the book provides readers with a better understanding of the underlying forces that drive these phenomena to the surface. What are the psychological dynamics at play? Why do groups of people behave in this manner? Beyond merely diagnosing what's happening, Manfred introduces various coping strategies to counteract the emergence of these regressive forces. The book offers a unique and original approach to answering the micro- and macro-psychological questions of how to mitigate against populism and autocratic leadership, and will be of interest to the general reader as well as the key audiences of organizational leaders, psychoanalysts, coaches, psychotherapists, sociologists and social psychologists.

Kuhn, Timothy, What Do Corporations Want?: Communicative Capitalism, Corporate Purpose, and a New Theory of the Firm. 192 pp. 2024:6 (Bristol U. Pr., UK) <717-353>
ISBN 978-1-5292-1427-7 hard ¥22,788.- (税込) GB£ 79.99 *

Corporate purpose' has become a battleground for stakeholders' competing desires. Some argue that corporations must simply generate profit; others suggest that we must make them create social change. Leading organization studies scholar Timothy Kuhn argues that this 'either/or' thinking dramatically oversimplifies matters: today's corporations must be many things, all at once. Kuhn offers a bold new Communicative Theory of the Firm to highlight the authority that creates corporations' identities and activities. The theory provides a roadmap for navigating that battleground of competing desires to produce more responsive corporations. Drawing on communicative and new materialist theorizing, along with three insightful case studies, this book thoroughly redefines our understandings of what corporations are 'for'.

ISBN 978-1-03-251844-2 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

Hofstede Matters offers an updated presentation of the evolving views of academics and teachers who have worked with Hofstede's research findings since the publication of the first edition of Culture's Consequences in 1980. The authors reflect on their changing beliefs about the concept of cultural dimensions that led to a radical change in the way cultures were dealt with in business schools across Europe and beyond. Hofstede's dimensions made "thinking" about culture more accessible overnight by creating a conceptual framework that teachers, students, managers, and consultants could grasp and easily apply in international comparisons. The book shows the man behind the value dimensions framework through the eyes of teachers and academics many of whom dealt with Hofstede personally. Contemporary contributors as well as younger academic fellow researchers evaluate the past paradigms and look behind the scenes to better understand the developments of the more recent ones. Jointly, they try to decide if Hofstede still helps us to overcome uncertainty when confronted with actions undertaken with different values in mind. Did he nudge us in the desirable direction? Offering a unique analysis of the strengths, criticisms, and legacy of Hofstede's work, this book will appeal to academics and students across disciplines including cross-cultural management, critical management studies, and international management.

In the knowledge economy, teams play a central role in decisions made within and across organisations. The reason why teams with diverse compositions are often used is arguably their ability to develop solutions that none of their members could have produced alone. Systems design, strategy and policy development, risk management, and innovation are just a few of the areas that call for team decisions. Unfortunately, a considerable number of behavioural research studies show that teamwork is fraught with difficulties. Teams often underestimate their fallibility, struggle with conflict, or are unable to share and integrate critical information effectively. Indeed, the evidence shows that two out of three teams do not achieve their goals and half of organisational decisions - many of which are team decisions - fail.In this book, the authors draw from research in psychology, decision and systems sciences - as well as their own research and consulting work that spans more than 20 years - to show how designed interventions can enable team decision making to become rigorous, transparent, and defensible. They cover theory and practice regarding the design, delivery, and evaluation of interventions to support team decision making in situations of varied complexity. Written as an applied resource for researchers and advanced students in particular, this book offers a guide to proven interventions that enhance the process of making team decisions and increase the chances of superior team results. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

ISBN 978-1-032-48365-8 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This interdisciplinary book explores how CO2 can become a resource instead of a waste and, as such, be a tool to meet one of the grandest challenges humanity is facing: climate change.Drawing on a Norwegian narrative that has significance for a global audience, Oyvind Stokke and Elin Oftedal introduce in-depth, multi-perspective analyses of a sustainable innovation research experiment in industrial carbon capture and utilisation technologies. Building on extensive literature within marine sciences, sustainability research, and environmental philosophy and ethics, this book documents how a misplaced resource like CO2 can become valuable within a circular economy in its own right, while at the same time meeting the challenge of food security in a world where food production is increasingly under pressure. The book is diverse in scope and includes chapters on how to reduce the environmental footprint of aquaculture by replacing wild fish and soy from the Amazon, how to optimise the monitoring of aquatic environments via smart technologies, and how to replace materials otherwise sourced from natural environments. The authors also analyse the pivotal role of the university in driving innovation and entrepreneurship, the pitfalls of different carbon technologies, and explore how the link between petroleum dependence and CO2 emissions has been addressed in Norway specifically.Making CO2 a Resource will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change, environmental ethics, environmental philosophy, sustainable business and innovation, and sustainable development more broadly.

Styhre, Alexander, The Business of Affordable Housing: Case Studies of the Commercial Supply of Affordable Homes. (Routledge Advances in Regional Economics, Science and Policy) 208 pp. 2024:5 (Routledge, UK) <717-358>

Despite the conventional wisdom that affordable housing, either in the form of homeownership or through access to rental units, has beneficial effects for households, society, and the economy more broadly, there is a noteworthy lack of empirical studies of housing development and construction companies or building societies that actively work to supply this asset class in the economy. There are several reasons for this condition, including the "thin market" for such business activities. This book offers a case study that includes two Swedish housing development companies that have targeted a market niche for affordable homes that few other companies and market actors are concerned with. One company is part of a major construction company conglomerate which produces prefabricated housing modules to better serve the low-end niche of the housing market. The other company is a municipality-owned housing development company that acts on the basis of market practices and rules but that also on policymakers' stated ambition to provide affordable homes for the residents in the municipality, the largest municipality in a major Swedish metropolitan area. Taken together, the study of these two companies provides first-hand insights into how the production of affordable homes takes place in a real-world economy. The book is of relevance for a variety of readers, including graduate students, management scholars, policymakers, and management consultants.

The creative industries - the place where art, business, and technology meet in economic activity - have been hugely affected by the relatively recent digitalisation (and often monetisation) of work, home, relationships, and leisure. Such trends were accelerated by the global COVID-19 pandemic. This edited collection examines how the creative industries can be supported to make best use of opportunities in digital technology and data-driven innovation.Since digital markets and platforms are now essential for revenue generation and audience engagement, there is a vital need for improved data and digital skills in the creative and cultural sectors. Taking a necessarily global perspective, this book explores the challenges and opportunities of data-driven approaches to creativity in different contexts across the arts, cultural, and heritage sectors. Chapters reach beyond the platforms and approaches provided by the technology sector to delve into the collaborative work that supports innovation around the interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral issues that emerge where data infrastructures and approaches meet creativity.A novel intervention that uniquely centres the role of data in the theory and practice of creative industries' innovation, this book is valuable reading for those researching and studying the creative economy as well for those who drive investment for the creative industries in a digitalised society. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 International license.

We live in an ever-changing world in which organizations find it increasingly difficult to stay ahead of the changes needed to be successful without thriving people. The authors believe that when people are valued and respected it improves their overall mental well-being and workplace experience, which in turn, makes them more motivated to help meet the purpose and objectives of the organization and adapt to external drivers. This book explores how mental well-being and a culture of continuous improvement are intertwined and mutually reinforcing. The authors contend that to create a sustainable culture of continuous improvement there must be an organization-wide focus on mental well-being at the individual level. A culture of continuous improvement nurtured in the right way, however, will indeed support mental well-being and help create a thriving organization. The key benefit of the book is demonstrating how important mental well-being is for sustainable organizational success. It explores this through many different lenses such as the individual, teams, leaders, and the organization as a whole, and explains the key elements needed for success. Leaders at all levels are able to understand why mental well-being is critical and how to nurture it in the workplace. In addition, the book explains the importance of diversity, equality, inclusion, and belonging, and how this is integral to mental well-being and a thriving organization. This book provides unique insight into how mental well-being and a culture of continuous improvement are intertwined explaining how thriving people and a thriving culture of continuous improvement create a thriving organization.

Real-Time Visibility in Supply Chain Management applies the paradox theory to understand why real-time visibility expectations and aspirations do not meet supply chain realities. Providing an understanding of the governance of industrial digital platforms for real-time visibility, the book identifies paradoxical tensions among platform partners and explores how to navigate them. The author conceptualizes dynamic patterns of tension evolution among supply chain platform partners and suggests future research directions to advance theorization regarding platform governance and tensions. The successful implementation of digital platforms requires understanding and navigating these paradoxical tensions. The perspective of paradox theory offered in this book can advance our supply chain digitalization understanding as it informs about gaps in thought processes, methodologies, tools, and solutions. The book also explores the role of multiple stakeholders, including platform owners, customers and complementors, in operationalizing real-time visibility to offer new theoretical insights. This book will appeal to researchers and scholars in the areas of supply chain management, operations and logistics, as well as those interested in digitalization and technology management.
