Geography of Technology Transfer in China: A Glocal Network Approach. (East China Normal University Scientific Reports 17) 544 pp. 2024:1 (World Scientific, SI) <718-201>
ISBN 978-981-12-7495-4 hard ¥34,064.- (税込) US$ 158.00 *
Technology transfer studies are usually framed through Economics and Management Sciences, but this volume Geography of Technology Transfer in China seeks to reveal the mechanism of technology transfer from the geographical perspective. It not only depicts the spatial evolution laws of glocal technology transfer networks, but also uses regression models to uncover the two-way effects between the networks and innovative capacity. In addition, this book highlights the integration and interaction of networks on both the global and local scales. A theoretical framework on glocal networks of technology transfer is established based on a series of economic geography bases in order to depict the spatial differences and coupling mechanism among multi-scaled networks in China. This book consists of 5 parts and 10 chapters, which illustrate the background, theoretical basis, spatial evolution, dual-way influences, and policy implications of technology transfer in China, presenting a clear structure both theoretically and empirically. The book begins with the 'what', 'why', and 'how' questions behind geographical studies on technology transfer to clarify the purpose of the book and its differentiation from present technology transfer studies. Thereafter, it discusses the 'holy trinity' framework of glocal technology transfer networks consisting of cultural, territorial, and networked subsystems. To this end, the spatial evolution of the technology transfer is highlighted through soical network analysis, which aims at depicting the geographical rules of China's technology transfer networks at global, domestic, and regional scales. Based on these discoveries, the next part of the book further analyzes, through a series of regression models such as ERGM and NBRM, the kinds of determinants which have influenced the network size and how the network has in turn affected local innovation capacity . Lastly, the policy implications connect the findings of empirical studies with the operability of the national innovation system. On the whole, this book extensively covers the theoretical, empirical, and practical applications of the geography of technology transfer in China.

Women Entrepreneurs in the Middle East: Context, Ecosystems, and Future Perspectives for the Region. (Asia-Pacific Business Series 14) 250 pp. 2024:3 (World Scientific, SI) <718-211>
ISBN 978-981-12-8348-2 hard ¥29,752.- (税込) US$ 138.00 *
Straddling North Africa and Western Asia, the Middle East has been a cradle of civilisation and entrepreneurship - well before the arrival of Islam. In this region, gender roles were traditionally specified by culture, with women often expected to stay within the family environment, while men would trade in society at large. This book contributes to the literature on a highly neglected field of study: women entrepreneurs in the Middle East. Recognising that entrepreneurship does not take place in a vacuum, it focuses on contexts, and the ecosystems of this region with largely patriarchal societies, that are influenced by culture, religion, and colonial experience. This book provides readers with a topical analysis of women entrepreneurs in the Middle East on the context, ecosystems, and future perspectives for the region. Authors have presented the reality of 11 countries from the region based on women entrepreneurs' historical backgrounds, challenges, and achievements, as well as the contribution towards economic development in their local/immediate communities and the Middle East at large. Following the country analysis by the authors of each chapter, the editors provide a general assessment of the future of women entrepreneurs in the region by focusing on the current entrepreneurship policy and strategies of various countries in the region. This volume will be an essential reading for anyone researching or working on projects related to women's entrepreneurship and small businesses in the Middle East.

Every industry has faced the tidal wave of 'digital' that has either re-shaped or dramatically altered their modus operandi. Supporting technologies in the management information systems arena have given rise to increased end to end visibility, real time access to information, and tightly controlled monitoring of deployed assets. In many industries it is straightforward to see the impact that digital technologies have had. Finance is a great example, with cash payments becoming increasingly less and less common, and digital currencies increasing in prominence. Yet how has this impacted supply chain management? In a discipline that spans multiple industries, continents, and companies, are there examples that we can point to that explain how digital supply chains have become? Which aspects of supply chain management were transformed by the digital tidal wave, and which functions are lagging behind? This is what this volume seeks to address.Trends: what are the current trends in digital (or digitalization) supply chain management? Ideally, these trends will include all aspects of the supply chain. That is, how has the digital revolution impacted sourcing? What are the digital trends in the logistics, warehousing, and distribution industry? How has 'digital' impacted the operations and manufacturing industry? Challenges: where are the diminishing returns to digital and its inclusion in the supply chain? Are there problems related to procurement and sourcing as the digital revolution takes hold? Are logistics challenges compounded in a digital world? Is manufacturing more streamlined or are there additional complexities that need to be addressed?Solutions: Are the challenges all too overwhelming, or are there remedies that we can advance to cope with an ever increasingly digital world?

Unpacking the 'Start-up City': Entrepreneurship, Neoliberal Governance and Local Actors Agency. 159 pp. 2023:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <718-307>
ISBN 978-3-031-50211-8 hard ¥9,412.- (税込) EUR 39.99
This book provides an invaluable overview of neoliberalising trends in urban policies and governance by presenting novel perspectives on municipal entrepreneurship support policies. It seeks to address a current lack of in-depth empirical knowledge of this topic and the reference literature's silence on local actors agency. The book 's scholarly debate around the impact of neoliberal capitalism on cities interweaves with empirical observations in the European cities of Barcelona and Milan with a view to examining what lies behind the "start-up city" label, and the way local actors reproduce, contest and re-signify entrepreneurship policies and practices in a highly individualised context. Based on more than sixty interviews with key policy actors, including young beneficiaries, it sheds light on their representations, motivations, intentions and room for manoeuvre in a way that encompasses local specificities in which multi-scalar economic, social, institutional and cultural processes interact. Finally, this book offers new insights into critical entrepreneurship studies and current debates about convergence and divergence trends in urban policies and governance.

Innovation is a top priority for all kinds of organizations, of all sizes and shapes, throughout the world. But innovation doesn't happen only at the executive level. Behavioral Decision Analysis. (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science 350) 283 pp. 2024:3 (Springer, GW) <718-310>
ISBN 978-3-031-44423-4 hard ¥35,306.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book lays out a foundation and taxonomy for Behavioral Decision Analysis, featuring representative work across various domains. Traditional research in the domain of Decision Analysis has focused on the design and application of logically consistent tools to support decision makers during the process of structuring problem complexity, modeling uncertainty, generating predictions, eliciting preferences, and, ultimately, making better decisions. Two commonly held assumptions are that the decision maker's cognitive belief system is fully accessible and that this system can be understood and formalized by trained analysts. However, in past years, an active line of research has emerged studying instances in which such assumptions may not hold. This book unites this community under the common theme of Behavioral Decision Analysis. The taxonomy used in this book categorizes research based on task focus (prediction or decision) and behavioral level (individual or group). Two theoretical lenses that lie at the interface between (1) normative and descriptive research, and (2) normative and prescriptive research are introduced. The book then proceeds to highlight representative works across the two lenses focused on individual and group-level decision making. Featuring various methodologies and applications, the book serves as a reference for researchers, students, and professionals across different disciplines with a common interest in Behavioral Decision Analysis.

The Control of Business Relationships: How Social Control Theory Explains Interactions among Organizations. 220 pp. 2024:3 (World Scientific, SI) <718-314>
ISBN 978-981-12-8487-8 hard ¥18,972.- (税込) US$ 88.00 *
How does social control theory explain the relationships between business firms and organizations? This book aims to answer that question. Providing a comprehensive organizing framework of control (1st, 2nd, and 3rd party control), this book focuses on informal and formal applications of control mechanisms such as contracts, monitoring mechanisms, incentives, and punishments. In doing so, it reviews existing control/governance theories such as transaction cost analysis, agency theory, power/dependence theory, contract theory, incentives theory and others. Social control theory is introduced as a meta-theory of governance and control. The derivation of control, the outcomes of control and, particularly, when and how control might be successful are discussed in detail. The book hypothesizes that the control mode and mechanisms in use are a function of the cost of control to the controller based on its desire to manage the relationship and its outcomes, and the target of control's extent of agreement with the control processes in use. The various components of costs of control are identified and discussed. Drawing on interdisciplinary sources of information, it is a must-read for all who are interested in understanding the mechanisms of control and relationships underpinning business organizations.

The Venture Alchemists: How Big Tech Turned Profits Into Power. 504 pp. 2024:5 (Columbia Business School, US) <718-324>
ISBN 978-0-231-21026-3 hard ¥7,546.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *
We once idolized tech entrepreneurs for creating innovations that seemed like modern miracles. Yet our faith has been shattered. We now blame them for spreading lies, breaking laws, and causing chaos. Yesterday's Silicon Valley darlings have become today's Big Tech villains. Which is it? Are they superheroes or scoundrels? Or is it more complicated, some blend of both?In The Venture Alchemists, Rob Lalka demystifies how tech entrepreneurs built empires that made trillions. Meta started as a cruel Halloween prank, Alphabet began as a master's thesis that warned against corporate deception, and Palantir came from a campus controversy over hateful speech. These largely forgotten origin stories show how ordinary fears and youthful ambitions shaped their ventures-making each tech tale relatable, both wonderfully and tragically human. Readers learn about the adversities tech entrepreneurs overcame, the troubling tradeoffs they made, and the tremendous power they now wield. Using leaked documents and previously unpublished archival material, Lalka takes readers inside Big Tech's worst exploitations and abuses, alongside many good intentions and moral compromises. But this story remains unfinished, and The Venture Alchemists ultimately offers hope from the people who, decades ago, warned about the risks of the emerging Internet. Their insights illuminate a path toward more responsible innovations, so that technologies aren't dangerous weapons but valuable tools that ensure progress, improve society, and enhance our daily lives.

Our brains are wonderful tools, but they are nonetheless prone to misjudging information and making suboptimal decisions. In many situations, we act without fully considering why we are behaving in a certain way. How can we think more clearly and make better decisions-in business and in life? This book is a practical and accessible introduction to mental models, teaching readers how to harness their power to think more clearly, make better decisions, and learn more effectively. The essential step in applying these concepts and frameworks, Jaime Lester shows, is to pause. Take a moment to reflect on the options, decide on the optimal approach before launching into action, and reexamine the process regularly. Drawing on a variety of academic disciplines as well as cognitive and behavioral research, Lester offers step-by-step templates to improve readers' critical thinking and decision making. He guides readers through honing their reasoning in areas including finance, economics, statistics, and daily life and draws broader lessons for cultivating a prudent investment approach as well as personal well-being and happiness. Research in the area of intellectual property (IP) is increasingly relevant to the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics industries, affecting the legal, business, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors. This contributed volume aims to develop our understanding of the legal and ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence and robotics technologies and the appropriate intellectual property based legal and regulatory responses. It provides a philosophical and legal framework for considering concepts and principles that relate to the development and use of such technologies at the international, regional, and national levels. The legal discourse in IP concerns the ever-growing AI sector and how businesses can protect their IP and incorporate AI. Taking an interdisciplinary and diverse perspective, this book enriches the evolving definition and scope of IP literature by focusing on actors, products and regulation that shape the business sector. Considering the gap between theory and practice, this book bridges academic and professional knowledge in unpacking legal, ethical and governance issues in the intellectual property industry. In an effort to include as many viewpoints as possible, contributions have been gathered from diverse fields, including business, ethics, governance, law, philosophy and technology studies. This book will appeal to academics in the field of intellectual property, business ethics, AI, emerging technologies and strategic innovation, as well as practitioners and policy makers.

Topics covered in the book include American constitutional law, as well European, primarily French, law on the subjects of contracts, courts, criminal law, freedom of expression, intellectual property, privacy and torts. The coverage of French law as a comparison to American law is because of its influence throughout the world. Although the Napoleonic Code was not the first code to be introduced, it has, according to reputed sources, been far more influential in the development of codes throughout the world, than any other. The laws and regulations addressed apply to all employees working at all levels of a business, and it covers contracts, sales, government relations, regulatory/legal compliance, and engineering, among others.
