Unruh, Peter,
Kant und der Weltfoederalismus: Zur Grundlegung und Aktualitaet von Kants global-politischer Philosophie. (Wissenschaftliche Abhandlungen und Reden zur Philosophie, Politik und Geistesgeschichte 104) 125 S. 2021:10 (Duncker, GW) <666-95>
ISBN 978-3-428-18368-5 paper ¥11,745.- (税込) EUR 49.90 *
In the context of globalization, the replacement of the nation-state paradigm by a federal world state is increasingly discussed. Peter Unruh examines the contribution of Kant's global political philosophy to this discussion by means of an in-depth analysis of the relevant writings. As a result, the Kantian postulate of world federalism is exposed, thus affirming the unbroken relevance of Kantian thought also for political thought in the 21st century.

Hubler, J. Noel,
Overcoming Uncertainty in Ancient Greek Political Philosophy. 269 pp. 2021:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <666-63>
ISBN 978-3-030-82090-9 hard ¥25,890.- (税込) EUR 109.99
Overcoming Uncertainty in Ancient Greek Political Philosophy makes an historical and theoretical contribution by explaining the role of opinion in ancient Greek political philosophy, showing its importance for Aristotle's theory of deliberation, and indicating a new model for a deliberative republic. Currently, there are no studies of opinion in ancient Greek political theory and so the book breaks new historical ground. The book establishes that opinion is key for the political theories of Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics because each sees uncertainty as a problem that needs to be overcome if one is to establish a virtuous polity. Since they have different notions of the nature of the uncertainty of opinion, they develop very different political strategies to overcome it. Thebook explains that Plato's and the Stoics' analyses of uncertainty support oligarchy and monarchy, respectively, and that theoretical support for deliberate politics requires a more nuanced understanding of uncertainty that only Aristotle provides.

This volume provides a fresh perspective on current democratic theory and practice by recovering the rich evaluations of democracy in the history of political thought. Each author addresses a single thinker's reflections on the virtues and defects of democracy and the relationship between democracy and other regimes. Together, these essays explore the tensions within the democratic way of life that arise from an attachment to equality, liberty, citizenship, law, and the divine. Above all, this work aims at recovering a more complex understanding of democracy, connecting the perennial questions of political philosophy to the perplexities and crises of modern democracy.

Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy: New Readings. (Thinking in Extremes) 314 pp. 2021:11 (Brill, NE) <666-1608>
ISBN 978-90-04-38292-3 hard ¥27,071.- (税込) EUR 115.00
Machiavelli is known chiefly for The Prince, but his main considerations on politics are found in his later work Discourses on Livy. Despite this book's historical and theoretical importance, its complexity, length and style have often discouraged new readers and interpreters of Machiavelli from engaging with it. For this reason, the Discourses has not been given the attention it deserves. This volume of newly commissioned essays by some of the world's leading Machiavelli experts seeks to remedy this deficiency. It is the first collective volume dedicated specifically to this profound work, covering topics such as Machiavelli's republicanism, the relation between liberty and tyranny, the role of religion, Machiavelli's conception of history, his writing style, his view of society as a plural and conflictive body, his suggestion of how a free state should be organized, and his notions of people and virtu. Nederman, Gabriele Pedulla, Diogo Pires Aurelio, Fabio Raimondi, Andre Santos Campos, Miguel Vatter, and Camila Vergara.

The State of Nature: Histories of an Idea. (History of European Political and Constitutional Thought 6) 435 pp. 2021:12 (Brill, NE) <666-1610>
ISBN 978-90-04-39517-6 hard ¥28,954.- (税込) EUR 123.00
The phrase, "state of nature", has been used over centuries to describe the uncultivated state of lands and animals, nudity, innocence, heaven and hell, interstate relations, and the locus of pre- and supra-political rights, such as the right to resistance, to property, to create and leave polities, and the freedom of religion, speech, and opinion, which may be reactivated or reprioritised when the polity and its laws fail. Combining intellectual history with current concerns, this volume brings together fourteen essays on the past, present and possible future applications of the legal fiction known as the state of nature. Contributors are: Daniel S. Allemann, Pamela Edwards, Ioannis D. Evrigenis, Mary C. Fuller, David Singh Grewal, Francesca Iurlaro, Edward J. Kolla, Laszlo Kontler, Grant S. McCall, Tom Sparks, Benjamin Straumann, Karl Widerquist, Sarah Winter, and Simone Zurbuchen.
