El-Merheb, Mohamad,
Political Thought in the Mamluk Period: The Unnecessary Caliphate. (Edinburgh Studies in Classical Islamic History and Culture) 224 pp. 2022:2 (Edinburgh U. Pr., UK) <673-873>
ISBN 978-1-4744-7964-6 hard ¥25,641.- (税込) GB£ 90.00 *
Political Thought in the Mamluk Period covers the political thought produced by legal theorists, jurists, judges and administrators of the late Ayyubid and early Mamluk period as they tackled a central question: how best to govern their communities. It proposes a taxonomy of the main themes and concerns of this political thought under the three ideals of the rule of law, limited government and legitimate delegation of power. Further, it recommends a contextualist approach for interpreting Islamic political texts based on their narrow social, intellectual and political contexts. Examining treatises by 5 carefully selected authors who flourished in the Syro-Egyptian lands in the period between c.1250 and c.1350, the book also deals with important questions of authorship, readership and dedicatees, authorial motives and intentions, genres and literary styles, sources and influences, and applicability.

Ingram, Robert G. / Barker, Christopher (eds.),
People Power: Popular Sovereignty from Machiavelli to Modernity. 312 pp. 2022:6 (Manchester U. Pr., UK) <673-874>
ISBN 978-1-5261-6564-0 hard ¥25,641.- (税込) GB£ 90.00 *
People power explores the history of the theory and practice of popular power. Western thinking about politics has two fundamental features: popular power in practice is problematic and nothing confers political legitimacy except popular sovereignty. This book explains how we got to our current default position in which rule of, for and by the people is simultaneously a practical problem and a received truth of politics. The book asks readers to think about how appreciating that history shapes the way we think about the people's power in the present. Drawn from the disciplines of history and political theory, the essayists in this volume engage in a mutually informing conversation about popular power. They conclude that the problems which first gave rise to popular sovereignty remain simultaneously compelling, unresolved and worthy of further attention.

Sembou, Evangelia (ed.),
Hegel's Political Philosophy: Themes and Interpretations. VI, 242 pp. 2021:12 (P. Lang, SZ) <673-48>
ISBN 978-1-80079-622-5 paper ¥15,942.- (税込) SFR 63.85
This collection examines different themes and offers novel interpretations of Hegel’s political philosophy. Thus, it sheds new light on what has been perhaps the most controversial area of Hegelian scholarship. It includes eight essays by a group of international scholars at different stages of their career. Its distinctive contribution is that it explores both Hegel’s early and mature political philosophy. It includes a paper on Hegel’s early essay on ≪Natural Law≫, published in two instalments in 1802 and 1803, and the System of Ethical Life, also published in 1802-1803, as well as papers on Hegel’s Philosophy of Right (published in 1821). Two papers also discuss ≪The German Constitution≫, written between 1798 and 1802. The volume comes as an addition to the current debate that has been occasioned by the bicentenary of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right.

Caranti, Luigi / Pinzani, Alessandro (eds.),
Kant and the Problem of Politics: Rethinking the Contemporary World. 170 pp. 2022:7 (Routledge, UK) <673-35>
ISBN 978-0-367-47157-6 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
This book examines the significance of Kant's political philosophy in the context of contemporary philosophical and political debates. In the last few decades, Kantian specialists have increasingly manifested a purely exegetic and philological interest in Kant's oeuvre, while contemporary philosophers and scientists tend to use Kant with scant hermeneutical care, thus misrepresenting or misunderstanding his positions. This volume countervails these tendencies by focusing more on specific themes of contemporary relevance in Kant's writings. It looks to Kant's political thought for insight on tackling issues such as freedom of speech, democracy and populism, intergenerational justice, economic inequality, money, poverty, international justice and gender/feminism.Featuring readings by well-known Kant specialists and emerging scholars with unorthodox approaches to Kant's philosophy, the volume fills a significant gap in the existing scholarship on the philosopher and his works. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of philosophy, politics and ethics.
