This book is an excellent critical introduction to modern political thought. From the first modern thinker Niccolo Machiavelli to the contemporary political philosopher Michel Foucault, it studies the ideas and contributions of sixteen major political thinkers in the history of modern political thought. The volume presents reflections on political ethics, social community, political order, and human nature. It explores how the thinkers have contributed to the broader conversation about human nature, power, justice, democracy, and the ever-changing relationship between the citizen and the state, and analyses how far their ideas remain relevant in contemporary times. An important contribution to the study of political thought, this comprehensive volume will be an essential read for students and scholars of political science, political theory, political philosophy, philosophy, and history.

Temin, David Myer,
Remapping Sovereignty: Decolonization and Self-Determination in North American Indigenous Political Thought. 288 pp. 2023:8 (U. Chicago Pr., US) <705-790>
ISBN 978-0-226-82726-1 hard ¥21,344.- (税込) US$ 99.00
ISBN 978-0-226-82728-5 paper ¥7,007.- (税込) US$ 32.50
An examination of anticolonial thought and practice across key Indigenous thinkers. Accounts of decolonization routinely neglect Indigenous societies, yet Native communities have made unique contributions to anticolonial thought and activism. Remapping Sovereignty examines how twentieth-century Indigenous activists in North America debated questions of decolonization and self-determination, developing distinctive conceptual approaches that both resonate with and reformulate key strands in other civil rights and global decolonization movements. In contrast to decolonization projects that envisioned liberation through state sovereignty, Indigenous theorists emphasized the self-determination of peoples against sovereign state supremacy and articulated a visionary politics of decolonization as earthmaking. Temin traces the interplay between anticolonial thought and practice across key thinkers, interweaving history and textual analysis. He shows how these insights broaden the political and intellectual horizons open to us today.

Rosenzweig, Franz,
Hegel and the State. 632 pp. 2023:11 (Routledge, UK) <705-51>
ISBN 978-0-367-37496-9 hard ¥19,085.- (税込) GB£ 66.99 *
Franz Rosenzweig (1886-1929) is one of the most significant German Jewish philosophers of the twentieth century. Published in German in 1920 and now finally available in English for the first time, Hegel and the State is a major contribution to the understanding of Hegel's political and social thought and a profound analysis of the intellectual currents that shaped the German state in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.Through careful readings of Hegel's early handwritten manuscripts, Rosenzweig shows that Hegel was wrestling with the problem of how to reconcile the subjectivity and freedom of the individual within a community and ultimately the political state. According to Rosenzweig, the route out of this conundrum chosen by Hegel shaped his mature political philosophy, where he saw the relationship between the individual and the state as reciprocal. At a deeper level, the significance of Hegel and the State lies in the way that Rosenzweig explains the failure of Hegel's quasi-communitarian view of the state to emerge, due to the authoritarian direction of the newly unified German state under Bismarck. Anticipating the political and moral disaster that was to follow, Rosenzweig concludes by questioning the very viability of any theory of the state that relies on the pillars of bureaucratic militarism and a government-supported capitalist business culture. With the inclusion of a Foreword by Myriam Bienenstock and a substantial Afterword by Axel Honneth, Hegel and the State is a ground-breaking work of early twentieth-century philosophical and political thought. It is essential reading for students of Hegel, German Idealism, Jewish philosophy, and the origins of critical theory. It will also be of interest to those in related subjects such as the history of sociology, and German and intellectual history.

政治的資本主義の時代におけるハイエク
Yadav, Vikash,
Liberalism's Last Man: Hayek in the Age of Political Capitalism. 288 pp. 2023:8 (U. Chicago Pr., US) <705-261>
ISBN 978-0-226-82147-4 hard ¥7,546.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *
A modern reframing of Friedrich Hayek's most famous work for the 21st century. Friedrich Hayek's The Road to Serfdom was both an intellectual milestone and a source of political division, spurring fiery debates around capitalism and its discontents. In the ensuing discord, Hayek's true message was lost: liberalism is a thing to be protected above all else, and its alternatives are perilous. In Liberalism's Last Man, Vikash Yadav revives the core of Hayek's famed work to map today's primary political anxiety: the tenuous state of liberal meritocratic capitalism-particularly in North America, Europe, and Asia-in the face of strengthening political-capitalist powers like China, Vietnam, and Singapore. As open societies struggle to match the economic productivity of authoritarian-capitalist economies, the promises of a meritocracy fade; Yadav channels Hayek to articulate how liberalism's moral backbone is its greatest defense against repressive social structures.
