This book builds upon Foucauldian scholarship's compelling interrogations that have contributed to the changing conceptualization of the premises of the discipline of International Relations.

This epistemological 'glasnost' facilitates the analysis of the United Nations General Assembly endorsed 'responsibility to protect' (R2P) as not merely a security but a security/development measure. This book unpacks the conditions that on one hand necessitate such measures and on the other hand, allow the subsequent dilution of their radical promise. This framing and analysis of R2P has implications beyond R2P. Increasingly, citizens converted into populations are shepherded by the state to chambers of partial, if not total surrender of civil liberties, standard of living, and well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated such measures for people in the Global South, who since the inception of the post Second World War order continue to await their turn to be the beneficiary ofdevelopment. The development, initially prescribed by the modernization theorists, echoed subsequently in the 1980s by the good governance promoter-World Bank-continues to elude most in the Global South. Indeed, the region's political and economic instability is often the site that renders as a truism, Foucault's upending of Clausewitz's dictum-'War is the pursuit of politics by other means'-with 'Politics is the pursuit of war by other means.' The thanatopolitics (politics of death) of these 'failed,' 'failing,' or 'flailing,' states, is the reason why their populations are seen to be in frequent need for the operationalization of the international community's 'responsibility to protect.'

Challenging mainstream nation-centred theories of economic development, Nicolas Grinberg examines the specificities of capitalist development in Brazil and South Korea by starting from their modes of participation in the international division of labour and hence in the production of surplus value on a global scale. Contrary to those theories, he does not consider these as resulting simply from the economic policies of nation states and their associated political institutions; nor from local class-struggle dynamics or geopolitical developments. Origen of Alexandria and the Theology of the Holy Spirit offers a comprehensive account of Origen's pneumatology. In examining the Holy Spirit's identity and activity in Origen's writings, this study reads Origen in his context and surveys his entire corpus. It shows that Origen grounds his pneumatology in Scripture and uses Jewish, philosophical, and earlier Christian teachings in exegeting the passages he believes pertain to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is revealed to function in Origen's works as a single hypostasis dependent on the Father and Son for both his being and attributes, which ranks the Spirit below the Father and Son. The Spirit, however, is grouped with the Father and Son, distinct from all other beings and ranked above them. The Holy Spirit, therefore, is ranked third of all things. This relationship serves as the basis for Origen's belief that the Spirit's activities--giving spiritual gifts, sanctifying believers and making them holy, offering intercession, inspiring Scripture, and aiding in the interpretation of Scripture--are a common operation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Spirit, then, plays an integral role in the salvation of the human person. By offering a comprehensive understanding of Origen's pneumatology, Micah M. Customised Books in Early Modern Europe and the Americas, 1400-1700 examines the form, function, and meaning of alterations made by users to the physical structure of their book, through insertion or interpolation, subtraction or deletion, adjustments in the ordering of folios or quires, amendments of image or text. Although our primary interest is in printed books and print series bound like books, we also consider selected manuscripts since meaningful alterations made to incunabula and early printed books often followed the patterns such changes took in late fourteenth- and fifteenth-century codices. This book sets out to try to understand why segregated schooling still exists, especially in northern Italy in South Tyrol where they practice 'separate but equal' education. Supported by the UN, the Austrian and Italian governments, the province is considered a 'peace model' due to its consociational approach to dealing with the region's Nazi and Fascist past, which has led to a 'negative peace'. The autonomy statutes, which derived from this 'peace', resulted in an education system that is linguistically segregated for the purposes of protecting South Tyrol's ethnolinguistic minorities.

Broken into two parts, the book begins with the background history of the province, before describing the region's geographical layout, demographics, local identity, and its three-part schooling system. By examining responses to South Tyrol's education system, and its impact on local group dynamics, this book explores the implications that segregated schooling may have on second language acquisition. This case study will be of interest to students and scholars of Italian studies, anthropology, linguistic ethnography, sociolinguistics, and second language education.

The Gnostic Trilogy is the best-known and most important work by the ascetic philosopher and teacher Evagrius of Pontus. Among the writers of his age, Evagrius stands out for his short, perplexing, and absorbing aphorisms, which provide sharp insight into philosophy, Scripture, human nature, and the natural world. The first part of the trilogy, the Praktikos (The Practiced One), provides a diagnosis and treatment of the eight tempting thoughts. It was a foundational text for monastic asceticism and was the basis for the later Seven Deadly sins tradition. The second, Gnostikos (The Knower), explains how someone who has mastered the body and mental delusions should teach others. The third, longest, and most controversial, the Kephalaia gnostika (Gnostic Chapters), ranges broadly over the origin of the universe, the nature of rational beings, and the hidden symbols of Scripture. This part was responsible for Evagrius's condemnation as a heretic and, as a result, does not survive intact in the original Greek and must be restored from ancient translations. This volume presents the Trilogy in its entirety for the first time since antiquity and provides a fresh, comprehensive English translation of all three works, in all their known ancient versions, both Greek and Syriac. Detailed explanatory notes, cross-references to Scripture, to ancient literature, and to Evagrius's other writings, as well as commentary on the translation techniques of the Syriac translators, provide the necessary resources for understanding this significant but puzzling text.

The Amish and ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities have typically been associated with strict religious observance, a renunciation of worldly things, and an obedience of women to men.
