This book provides a historical and socio-legal investigation into the prevalence of litigation arising from cursing and interpersonal hostility in the under-explored region of Northwest England during a period of acute socio-economic crisis in the seventeenth century. Very little is known about the origins of Animadversiones, Notae ac Disputationes in Pestilentem Alcoranum, a manuscript of 323 two-sided folios composed by the Jesuit Ignazio Lomellini (born around 1560 in Genoa, died 1645 in Rome), housed in the library of the University of Genoa (Ms A-IV-4) and bearing the date 1622. This document is a unique surviving exemplar of the oldest translation of the Qur’an into a Western European language to include the complete Arabic text. Moreover, it contains a detailed commentary consisting generally of attempts by the author to refute or discredit the Qur’an and the Prophet Mohammed as well as numerous marginalia. The significance of this work derives both from its early place among transcriptions, translations and commentaries of the entire Qur’an undertaken by Western Christians and because of the high quality of the translation itself. The work is also a unique window into the training and attitudes of Jesuit missionaries and writers engaging with Islam during the early modern period, and thus sheds light on subsequent representations of Muslims and Islam in Jesuit homiletics, drama, and visual art. The book contains a thorough discussion of Lomellini’s principles of translation, his coping with problematic Arabic passages and words, and the manifold sources on which the author relied. In addition, and as an example for Lomellini’s translation technique, an analysis and a full transcription of the Latin text of Sura 18 (“The Cave”) is provided.

The first sustained study of the vibrant links between domestic craft and British colonialism

In the eighteenth century, women's contributions to empire took fewer official forms than those collected in state archives. Their traces were recorded in material ways, through the ink they applied to paper or the artifacts they created with muslin, silk threads, feathers, and shells. Handiwork, such as sewing, knitting, embroidery, and other crafts, formed a familiar presence in the lives and learning of girls and women across social classes, and it was deeply connected to colonialism.

Chloe Wigston Smith follows the material and visual images of the Atlantic world that found their way into the hands of women and girls in Britain and early America-in the objects they made, the books they held, the stories they read-and in doing so adjusted and altered the form and content of print and material culture. A range of artifacts made by women, including makers of color, brought the global into conversation with domestic crafts and consequently placed images of empire and colonialism within arm's reach. Together, fiction and handicrafts offer new evidence of women's material contributions to the home's place within the global eighteenth century, revealing the rich and complex connections between the global and the domestic.

Aboard ships ranging from frail plywood landing craft to sleek destroyers, sailors were active combatants in the operation of June 1944, and had worked tirelessly to secure the Seine Bay in the months preceding it. They fought battles against German submarines, aircraft, and warships, and maintained careful watch to keep control of the English Channel.

Hewitt recounts these sailors' stories for the first time-and shows how, without their efforts, D-Day would have failed.

The Age of Revolution (1776-1848) destroyed the main slave regimes of the Caribbean but a 'Second Slavery' surged in the US South, Cuba and Brazil, powered by demand for plantation produce and a system of financial credit that leveraged the value of the slaves. By 1860, more than 6 million captives of African descent toiled to produce the cotton, sugar and coffee craved by global consumers. This 'Second Slavery' mimicked capitalist disciplines, intensified slavery's racial character and launched half a century of headlong economic growth.

On the eve of the American Civil War, the Slave Power seemed invincible. The slaveholding elite entrenched their 'peculiar institution' in the fabric of the Union only to risk everything on secession. Nobody solicited the slaves' wishes until it became clear that, wherever they could, they were deserting the plantations and joining the Union forces.

Abolition radicals destroyed the Second Slavery and victory for the North also spelled defeat for slavery in Cuba and Brazil. But in each of these societies racial oppression was to be reconfigured by 'Black Codes', Jim Crow and toxic doctrines of racial destiny.

Slavery leaves an indelible mark on many Atlantic nations. The Reckoning charts the historic impact of slavery and anti-slavery, of black and white activists, of fugitive slaves, feminists, writers, clerics and soldiers. Notwithstanding much unfinished business, the anti-slavery struggle retains its capacity to illuminate and inspire.

The concept of the Rus' Land (russkaia zemlia) became and remained an historical myth of modern Russian nationalism as the equivalent of "Russia," but it was actually a political myth, manipulated to provide legitimacy. Its meaning was dynastic-territories ruled by a member of the Riurikid/Volodimerovich princely clan. This book traces the history of its use from the tenth to the seventeenth century, outlining its changing religious (pagan to Christian) and geographic elements (from the Dnieper River valley in Ukraine in Kievan Rus' to Muscovy in Russia) and considers alternative "land" concepts which failed to rise to the ideological heights of the Rus' Land. Although the Rus' Land was never an ethnic or national concept, and never expanded its appeal beyond an elite lay and clerical audience, understanding its evolution sheds light upon the cultural and intellectual history of the medieval and early modern East Slavs.

In a young American republic seeking to define itself in relation to European cultural and political models past and present, it was assumed that the history of Europe's peoples could be tracked across time over the longue duree. From this perspective, even the barbarous long-haired kings of the distant Merovingian era helped to define the political and cultural identity of a France-and, indeed, a Europe-whose actions Americans recognized as relevant to their own republic. Americans saw medieval parallels not only in the actions of successive French regimes, but in contemporary transatlantic issues of anxiety, including the adjudication of claims of political legitimacy and the debate over the perpetuation of racial slavery. That early American writers located their own meanings in the history of Merovingian Francia is indicative of a less linear, and more diverse and transnational, historiography than previously recognized.

In June 1219 Danish crusaders fought a vicious battle against local pagan warriors at the place in northern Estonia where Tallinn now lies. The battle-known then as the Battle of Lyndanise-was a narrow victory for the crusaders and eventually turned out to be a pivotal event in the national histories of both Denmark and Estonia as a milestone in the overall military conquest of the entire region by (mostly) western military powers. This book argues that literary and historiographical works written by Iberian Christians between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries promoted contradictory representations of Muslims in order to advocate for their colonization through the affirmation of Christian supremacy. Ambivalent depictions of cultural difference are essential for colonizers to promote their own superiority, as explained by postcolonial critics and observed in medieval and early modern texts in Castilian, Catalan, and Portuguese, such as the Cantar de mio Cid, Cantigas de Santa Maria, Llibre dels fets, Estoria de Espana, Cronica geral de 1344, Tirant lo Blanch, and Os Lusiadas. In all these works, the contradictions of Muslim enemies, allies, and subjects allow Christian leaders to prevail and profit through their opposition and collaboration with them. Such colonial dynamics of simultaneous belligerence and assimilation determined the ways in which Portugal, Spain, and later European powers interacted with non-Christians in Africa, Asia, and even the Americas.

?Authors, Factions, and Courts in Angevin England: A Literature of Personal Ambition (12th-13th Century) advances a model for historical study of courtly literature by foregrounding the personal aims, networks, and careers as the impetus for much of the period's literature. The book takes two authors as case studies - Gerald of Wales and Walter Map - to show how authors not only built their own stories but also used popular narratives and the tools of propaganda to achieve their own, personal goals. The purpose of this study is to overturn the top-down model of political patronage, in which patrons - and particularly royal patrons - set the cultural agenda and dictate literary tastes. Rather, Fabrizio De Falco argues that authors were often representative of many different interests expressed by local groups. To pursue those interests, they targeted specific political factions in the changeable political scenario of Angevin England. Their texts reveal a polycentric view of cultural production and its reception. The study aims to model a heuristic process which is applicable to other courtly texts besides the chosen case-studies.

This is a monograph on the Pleiades, one of the oldest examples of a divine asterism. The Mesopotamian scholars understood it to be seven stars that received great attention in the cuneiform culture. This volume is designed as a case study on the topic of the conceptualisation of celestial bodies in Mesopotamia, and it aims to show how the Pleiades were perceived and thus described in the Sumerian and Akkadian languages. To this end, this monograph analyzes the intertextual relationships within a wide range of cuneiform sources - myths, prayers, and astral science texts - tracing one or more possible traditions in the perception of the Pleiades transmitted over almost two millennia. Great importance is given to divination and celestial omens, long lists of inferences featuring the Pleiades and the predictions associated with them. At the centre is the reconstruction and critical edition of three omen tablets devoted to the Pleiades, two from the celestial omen series En?ma Anu Enlil, and one from its serialised commentary umma Sin ina t?martiu. As an appendix, the volume also includes new insights into the structure and conception of omen texts in light of these new editions and new approaches to the history of scientific thought. Thus, The Perception of the Pleiades in Mesopotamian Culture combines cultural-historical research, philology and the necessary astronomical background in an innovative, interdisciplinary, and comprehensive way, which will be of interest not only to Assyriologists but also to specialists in the history of religion, astronomy, and other related fields.

This book examines education as a means to explore knowledge and literacy in the Old Babylonian period. It further employs a new method to research these topics. Contrary to numerous existing studies on the subject, the author examines elementary education globally, that is, in pursuit of Old Babylonian education in its entirety.
