Now in a fully revised, extended and updated new edition, this is the only book to offer a comparative overview of the development of elite sport systems around the world.
The book examines sport policies and programmes in 20 developed and developing countries that have achieved international sporting success, including the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Brazil, Russia, Australia, and South Korea, helping the reader to understand the factors behind that success. For each country, it sets out the historical and political context in which elite sport has developed, before explaining the country-specific structures of elite sport and the investment that each country has made in elite sport development. The book also considers how countries have used the hosting of mega-events as sport policy tools, and how factors such as geo-politics, states' governance and political ideology, and levels of economic development, all have influence on national sport policy.
Introducing the foundational concepts and principles of elite sport policy and development, and showing how those policies shape global sport, this book is fascinating reading for all students, researchers, policymakers and practitioners working in sport development, sport policy, sport management, event management, public policy, and political science.

This book examines the connections between film and Christianity, considering how films express and depict Christian faith and spirituality and provide experiences associated with it. The notion of movement as immobility (from Simone Weil) is employed to describe film and its images in motion. Its movements can reconnect us with the movements of the world, those motions in which a mysterious sense of order, what Weil calls "immobility," arises. Film is understood as a privileged form to access inscrutable spiritual (in)visibilities that can be linked with Christian concepts and practices. The chapters in Exploring Film and Christianity offer new studies of famous directors such as Andrei Tarkovsky and Robert Bresson combined with analyses of recent notable films, including Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups, Martin Scorsese's Silence, and Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049. Organized around the productive topics of theory, expression, depiction and experience, this volume is a valuable contribution to interdisciplinary research on film and Christianity.

The Routledge Companion to Literatures and Crisis provides deep insight into a complex and multi-layered phenomenon. The third decade of the twenty-first century is being marked by a polycrisis caused by various world crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, armed conflicts and climate change leading to economic, geopolitical, environmental, health and security crises.
Featuring 42 chapters, the collection examines crises through literary texts in relation to the environment, finance, migration and diaspora, war, human rights, values and identity, health, politics, terrorism and technology. It illuminates the many faces of the current permacrisis as well as the multifarious crises of the past and their representation in literatures across ages and cultures-from the Viking wars, Black Death in mediaeval Europe, technology in ancient China and the crisis of power in Elizabethan England to imperial biopower in nineteenth-century India, the genocides in the twentieth century, upsurge of domestic violence during the Covid lockdown in Spain and the development of AI.
The Companion connects diverse cultures, disciplines and academic traditions to show how and why literature, media and art can voice all types of crises across times. It will be a key resource for students and researchers in a broad range of areas including literature, film studies, narrative studies, cultural studies, international politics and ecocriticism.

This collection explores the impact of Covid-19 on the production and consumption of television and film content in the English-speaking world. Offering in-depth analysis of select on-screen entertainment, the volume addresses entertainment's changing role during and following the Covid-19 pandemic. It also studies the pandemic's incorporation into the narrative of numerous series, films, and other televised formats, capturing the moments and contexts in which these developments emerged. Chapters examine the pandemic's impact both on a micro- and macro level, focusing on the content as well as form of TV shows and films. Bringing together an international team of scholars, the book offers a range of perspectives, exploring phenomena such as the 'YouTubification' of audience-reliant late-night television, as well as films and TV shows such as Superstore, Grey's Anatomy, and The Good Fight.
Given the pandemic's lasting impact on the film and television industries, this book will be a valuable read for scholars studying audience and viewer reception of on-screen content, and the impact of crises on cultural industries. It will also appeal to researchers in cultural studies, popular culture studies, television studies, internet studies, film studies, and media studies more broadly.

Fashion, a realm often associated with trends and whims, is undergoing a transformation-one that goes beyond aesthetics to embrace sustainability as a guiding principle. Threaded Harmony: A Sustainable Approach to Fashion is a journey into this transformative realm, an exploration of how consumers can impact the industry and how the industry can align with environmental and social responsibility while fostering creativity and innovation.
Threaded Harmony acts as a comprehensive guide exploring the urgent need for sustainability in the fashion industry. Author Nirbhay Rana delves into the environmental impact of fashion, discussing the ecological footprint of fast fashion, pollution, and waste in the supply chain, supported by real-life case studies. He emphasizes the philosophy of "Threaded Harmony," advocating for a balanced and sustainable approach. Chapters cover various aspects of sustainable fashion, from understanding eco-friendly materials like organic cotton, hemp, and bamboo to exploring ethical fashion practices such as fair trade, workers' rights, and empowering local communities. The work also explores the circular fashion economy, promoting reducing, reusing, and recycling, along with the importance of a slow fashion movement that encourages mindful consumerism and personal style expression over trends.
Whether you are a seasoned fashion enthusiast, a conscious consumer, or an academic investigating the sustainable fashion movement, this work invites you to explore, question, and reimagine the role of fashion in our lives.

Culinary Man and the Kitchen Brigade offers an exploration of the field of normative subjectivity circulated within western fine dining traditions, presenting a theoretical analysis of the governing relationship between the chef, who embodies the Culinary Man, and the fine dining brigade.
The book offers a unique treatment of western haute cuisine's interlocking regime of labor and aesthetics and theorizes the underexplored kitchen brigade as a model of disciplinary formation. It deploys a heterogeneous set of disciplinary discourses and practices which have the effect of consolidating monopolies on epistemic authority and governance. Each position within the brigade's hierarchy is subject to distinct, though related, disciplinary practices. Thus, chapters identify the specific practices pertinent to each brigade subject, while also illuminating how they fit together as a coherent hegemonic project. The application of Wynterian and Foucauldian insight to the fine dining brigade offers a political theory of culinary work which departs from other food studies texts. Notably, this work offers an in-depth treatment of the brigade's colonial dimensions which resonate with emerging critiques, scholarly and general, of the race and gender politics of restaurant labor. The concluding chapters seek to identify where extant modes of resistance or alternative forms of culinary organization may hold the potential to move beyond the hegemonic overrepresentation of Culinary Man.
This book will be of great interest to students and scholars from across the social sciences and humanities interested in critical food studies, political and cultural theory, and popular culinary culture.

Music and Sonic Environments in Video Games brings together a range of perspectives that explore how music and sound in video games interact with virtual and real environments, often in innovative and unexpected ways. Drawing on a range of game case studies and disciplinary perspectives, the contributors consider the sonic environment in games as its own storytelling medium. Highlighting how dynamic video game soundscapes respond to players' movements, engage them in collaborative composition, and actively contribute to worldbuilding, the chapters discuss topics including genre conventions around soundscape design, how sonic environments shape players' perceptions, how game sound and music model ecological processes and nonhuman relationships, and issues of cultural and geographic representation.
Together, the essays in this volume bring game music and sound into the environmental humanities and transform our understanding of sonic environments as an essential part of storytelling in interactive media. Engaging a wide variety of game genres and communities of play, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of music, media studies, critical game studies, popular culture, and sound studies.

This study offers a radically new perspective on Dutch Neorealism, one that emphasizes the role of film as an apparatus, the effects of which, when emulated in painting, can reproduce the affective experience of film-watching.
More of a tendency than a tightly defined style or "ism," Neorealism is the Dutch variant of Magic Realism, an uncanny mode of figurative painting identified with Neue Sachlichkeit in Germany and Novecento in Italy. Best represented by the Dutch artists Pyke Koch, Carel Willink, Charley Toorop, Raoul Hynckes, Dick Ket, and Wim Schuhmacher, Neorealism-as demonstrated in this book-depicted societal disintegration and allegories of looming disaster in reaction to the rise of totalitarian regimes and, eventually, the Nazi Occupation of The Netherlands. The degree to which these artists exhibited either revolutionary or reactionary sentiments-usually corresponding with their political affiliation-is one of the central problematics explored in this text.
The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, World War II history, and film studies.

This book provides a unique insider's look at the world's largest film industry, now globally known as 'Bollywood' and challenges existing notions about Indian films.
Indian films have been a worldwide phenomenon for decades. Chapters in this edited volume take a fresh view of various hidden gems by maestros such as Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, V Shantaram, Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Shakti Samant, Rishikesh Mukherjee, and others. Other chapters provide a pioneering review and analysis of the portrayal of Indian religious communities such as Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Parsis. The themes covered include unique Indian feminism and male chauvinism, environment and climate issues, international locations and diaspora tourism, religious harmony and conflict, the India-Pakistan relationship, asceticism, and renunciation in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. Unlike many recent studies of Indian films, these chapters do not distinguish between popular and serious cinema. Many chapters focus on Hindi films, but others bring insights from films made in other parts of India and its neighbouring countries.
One of the chapters in this volume was originally published in the book titled Film and Place in an Intercultural Perspective India-Europe Film Connections, edited by Krzysztof Stachowiak, Hania Janta, Jani Kozina, and Therese Sunngren-Granlund. Another chapter was originally published in Worldviews: Global Religions, Culture, and Ecology. All other chapters were originally published in Visual Anthropology.

This accessible, up-to-date textbook covers the history of comics as it developed in the US in all of its forms: political cartoons and newspaper comic strips, comic books, graphic novels, minicomics, and webcomics. Over the course of its six chapters, this introductory textbook addresses the artistic, cultural, social, economic, and technological impacts and innovations that comics have had in American history. Readers will be immersed in the history of American comics-from its origins in 18th-century political cartoons and late 19th-century newspaper strips to the rise of the wildly popular comic book, the radical, grassroots collectives that grew out of the underground comix movement of the 1960s and 1970s, all the way through contemporary longform graphic novels, the vibrant self-publishing scene, and groundbreaking webcomics. The Routledge Introduction to American Comics guides students, researchers, archivists, and even fans of the medium through a contemporary history of comics, attending to how a diverse range of creators and researchers have advanced the art form in key ways since its inception as a foundational art of American popular culture. In this way, it is uniquely suited to readers engaged in the study of comics, as well as those interested in the creation of comics and graphic narratives.

Contesting stereotypical and deterministic accounts of British South Asian Muslims (BrAsians), which have largely contributed towards the perpetuation of Islamophobia, this book analyses how the influence of parents, extended family, and community support and constrain the lives of a younger generation of amateur and professional boxers.
Through an analysis of several case studies involving men and women amateur and professional boxers, complemented with immersive ethnographic accounts, BrAsian Family Practices and Reflexivity: Behind the Boxing Ropes challenges stereotypical depictions of BrAsian parental practices. Offering an alternative perspective, this book considers how BrAsian parents engage in reflexive deliberation as opposed to passively adhering to religious edicts or cultural diktats prior to promoting or preventing their child's personal projects. In the process Chaudry unearths how family relationship dynamics reflect their religious, cultured, gendered and classed beliefs.
This book will be of interest to students, academics, think tanks, policy makers and those studying sociology of family, family practices, multi-cultural societies, ethnography, and sports/leisure studies.

The book argues that psychoanalysis does not simply help us elucidate what we see on screen: rather, there is a fundamental relationship between the structure of psychoanalysis and that of cinema. Cinema acts upon the viewer like psychoanalysis upon the analysand and can expose them to the universal Lack inherent in their desire. This process undermines the unconscious logic of capitalism, which relies on a promise in fulfilment.
Rollins, a filmmaker, shows how reductive interpretations of psychoanalytic film theory have permeated film education and film practice and have affected the way films are made and watched, to the detriment of contemporary philosophy and politics. Psychocinema urges filmmakers, theorists and audiences to embrace the truly radical and emancipatory potential of cinema: its capacity to confront us with the universal Lack in our desire.

The Encyclopedia Tyrannica transcends the conventional boundaries of an encyclopedia, serving as a comprehensive research guide for scholars, students, and experts in the fields of authoritarianism and democratization. It delves deep into the historical, theoretical, and methodological underpinnings of key concepts while providing exhaustive literature reviews and exploring their varied applications across different world regions. Recognizing the challenges posed by the expanding landscape of authoritarian studies, over thirty experts collaborated to streamline the vast literature, exposing blind spots and accounting for nuances.
Whether seeking foundational knowledge or navigating specialized topics, the 'Tyrannica' stands as the definitive resource in dictatorship studies. By bridging gaps between theory and practice, novice and expert, it aims to foster a deeper understanding of autocratic regimes, their classifications, features, actors, behavior, worldviews, and transitions.
Designed with a structured approach, the 'Tyrannica' organizes entries logically, offering both alphabetical and thematic arrangements in seven sections. Additional information boxes enhance understanding by providing context-specific examples and understudied aspects. Intended as the quintessential reference for scholars and students alike, this encyclopedia extends beyond academia to policymakers and experts, offering a systemic overview of dictatorship studies and its intersections with democratization research. Area study experts will find alternative theories and regional variations elucidated, while educators can utilize the book as a teaching aid.

Around the world, schools are establishing and expanding esports programs as a way to grapple with issues of school refusal and poor mental health. However, educators are often unsure of how to include players from marginalised backgrounds who often need this support the most. Positioning esports programs as spaces for social inclusion within our schools, Press B to Belong provides educators with practical strategies to remove barriers to participation, promote a sense of belonging for students with disabilities and neurological differences, and bring about a cultural shift in our educational settings.
Presenting a series of case studies on successful esports programs operating in schools today, chapters examine a number of labels of difference and focus on creating supportive environments that allow people with intersecting identities to feel safe, welcome, and included in their local esports program. Recognising that esports present unique opportunities for examining gamer identity, the authors offer tools for promoting of gender inclusivity and using esports as a space for supporting players with disability and cultural diversity.
Aligning research with lived experience, Press B to Belong equips teachers, allied health professionals, and school support staff with the language and steps to use esports to address a range of needs, celebrate intersecting identities, and make school a place where all students want to be.

This text outlines the relative merits of qualitative interviewing to new and emerging scholars in an accessible way. This is achieved not by providing an exhaustive 'how-to' guide but in introducing researchers to the interview technique and using examples of 'best practice' from across the social sciences.
To ensure the book is both accessible and inclusive, efforts have been made to include case studies from a diverse range of authors, including those from different ethnic and social backgrounds, from outside Western Europe/North America, and from non-academic sources. This book will therefore introduce the reader to the key themes surrounding interview design, implementation, analysis and presentation, using examples and case studies from research across the social sciences.
Crucially, the book will not provide exhaustive guidance on how to conduct the techniques. Instead, each chapter includes a range of interview design activities for readers to try which might help them engage with the chapter topics, as well as a 'Summary' box which comprises a short annotated reading list of key texts relating to each of the chapter topics and a checklist of things to consider relating to the chapter topics.

In a series of finely woven meditations on slavery, sovereignty, and the social contract, this book places mothers and mothering at the crux of political thought. Anidjar identifies a maternal sovereignty and a maternal contract, showing that without motherhood, there could be no constitution, preservation, or reproduction of collective existence in time. And maternal power is also power over life and death, as he reveals through a nuanced consideration of abortion.
Through the concept of the maternal, Anidjar offers new insights into abiding sources from the Bible and ancient Greece to classical and modern political philosophy-the story of Hagar and Sarah, Oedipus and his two mothers, Hegel's dialectic of master and slave-reinterpreted in light of Black and feminist criticism, psychoanalytic theory, and autotheoretical reflection. Jazz and Literature: An Introduction presents an original collection of essays from leading international scholars, examining an array of musical and literary interconnections including improvisation, multicultural influences, poetry, modernism, the Beat movement, jazz forms, noir, solo and collective expression, global perspectives on jazz and literature, etc. This volume sheds light on the critical and creative discussions of music and literature, showing the evolving relevance of jazz in the twenty-first century. The book also includes a special section dedicated to interviews with writers, musicians, and creatives such as U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limon, Jericho Brown, Anthony Joseph, Geoff Dyer, Paul Hirsch, Dickie Landry, and Dwandalyn R. Reece. This volume is an ideal resource for students of music and literature and for academics interested in the creative dialogues between jazz and literature.
