As a broad critique and invitation to reframe the study of ethics, Problem-Based Ethics welcomes scholars and students across disciplines to engage with ethics as a way to explore pervasive questions of our society and human existence.
Stepping back from the intricacies of theory and from heated political debates, Samuel Kahn's synthesis of the study of ethics asks readers to consider even the most contentious of topics like abortion, capital punishment, and euthanasia from their most basic questions. This approach reveals opportunities for more nuanced and evolving ethical positions. It also promotes a culture of civility too often destroyed in politicized debates in scholarly and popular forums.
The book covers standard issues in metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics, such as the objectivism/subjectivism debate, the consequentialism/deontology/virtue ethics/ethics of care debate, and the abortion debate. It also introduces more advanced issues such as distributive justice and environmental ethics, as well as less standard questions often of interest to laypeople and students, such as whether crime can be eliminated.

In Road to October 7, Erik Skare argues that Palestinian Islamism is far more complex and dynamic than generally assumed. The phenomenon has continuously developed through disputes between moderates and hardliners. These struggles have largely been settled by external drivers - intra-Palestinian competition, Israeli violence and repression, or shifts in the regional power balance.

In November 2022, Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power in Israel after the fifth election in less than four years. Propped up by a bloc of far-right and ultra-religious parties, Netanyahu's government is the most extreme administration in Israeli history. It has pushed Israeli society to breaking point. Israel now faces cataclysmic rifts and an existential crisis. Pfeffer charts the mass protests against Netanyahu's attempts to silence the judiciary and expand settlement in the West Bank, as well as the shattering of Israel's core beliefs after October 7th and the calamitous war in Gaza. No King In Israel is the definitive story of Israel's fractured democracy, and of the fight to define what Israel should be.

Shortlisted for the Military History Matters Book of the Year Award 2026 'Gripping' Britain at War 'Deeply informative and entertaining ... Peter Hart is an excellent guide' Military History Matters In the 1880s, control over northeastern Africa was a political minefield into which Prime Minister Gladstone did not want to step - until his emissary Charles Gordon was besieged in Khartoum, and the city became the focal point for war. It was the height of European colonialism. Injustices were administered, bloody battles fought and civilians caught in the crossfire. Among the British officers were figures who would later adopt starring roles in the First World War, such as Egyptian Army sapper Captain Herbert Kitchener. By turns shocking and dynamic, Chain of Fire examines the terrible desert wars using the testimonies of the men who fought there.

Every society has an energy profile, that is, an array of energy sources, ranging in complexity from human power to nuclear fusion, that can be ranked according to their relative importance to that society. From about 4000 BE onward, animal muscle power becomes integrated into the energy profiles of many societies. The forms this integration takes include riding, carrying burdens, pulling wheeled vehicles and sleighs, operating mills and irrigation devices, and pulling plows, threshing sleds, and other agricultural implements. The use of animal power varies from region to region. These variations can be understood as falling into six discrete zones. The distinctive features of the arid zone from Morocco to Mongolia constitute the primary focus of this book. Successive chapters deal with caravan trading as a mode of production, the relationship between dairying and the availability of working animals, the spread of hybrid animal breeding (mules, bukhts, dzos) as an economic enterprise, and the integration of pastoral nomadism into the overall economy.

In this book, Michael Grabowski draws on established theories of ethics to consider critical questions surrounding the growing adoption of virtual reality (VR) technologies. These questions include who should control and have access to VR, its impact on privacy, its potential for misrepresentation and bias, and how to provide a platform for free expression while mitigating harassment and abuse.

Grabowski examines use cases of other digital technologies, including social media and artificial intelligence, to examine who is helped and harmed by the widespread implementation of VR and how it might transform existing institutions, social relationships, and communication. Finally, Grabowski forecasts the possible futures of VR and what limits, if any, should be placed on representing the real world or imagining new ones. Scholars of media studies, technology studies, communication, and ethics will find this book of particular interest.

In Christian Ethics and Biomedical Innovation, Stephen Goundrey-Smith outlines a strategy for future adoption of human enhancement technologies which will ensure that such technologies are a common good, a strategy which is appropriate for a pluralistic society, yet consistent with Christian ethical principles. Drawing on the history of biomedical innovation to date in pharmaceutical medicine, he argues that technological capability alone is not enough, and that the responsible adoption of enhancement technologies will require active ethical deliberation and robust public policy discourse. Goundrey-Smith argues that biomedical technology, ethics, and public policy together form an essential triad for appropriate future enhancement technology adoption. This approach helps to ensure that biomedical technologies introduced will be common goods, and to reduce the risk of their instrumental use. The use of any technology is closely linked to its sociopolitical and cultural context and, drawing on Augustine's The City of God, Goundrey-Smith presents a theological vision for good biomedical technology innovation in human society.

Reframing India in World History breaks the stereotypical portrayal of India based on misconstrued historical theories. Prevalent constructions of Indian history are tinged with colonial historical frameworks and presentation. It is important to understand India for what it is in the past based on self-determined frameworks derived from Indian history to reclaim India's place in the world history. Based on new evidence-based research, Lavanya Vemsani explores
patterns of civilization that are indigenous to India to investigate its history from the beginning to the present. This book covers topics central to a comprehensive understanding of the nation including a discussion of long held cultural notions, civilization continuity, and the historical crises deriving from conquests and colonization.

Uganda is home to 1.5 million refugees from DRC, Burundi, South Sudan and other countries. The Uganda political framework is one of the most progressive and inclusive toward refugees. Only a fraction of the refugees is likely to go back to their home countries. This book assesses Uganda's progressive refugee policy with reference to how it functioned in the era of COVID-19 using a unique panel data collected between 2017 and 2021.

The Uganda Refugee Policy (2006) and the Refugee Regulations (2010) grant refugees wide-ranging rights that include allocating land for agriculture purposes, freedom of movement, and the right to seek employment. However, the magnitude and the speed of influx of refugees in recent years have posed critical challenges to the sustainability of these progressive policies. On top of this, unpredictable and unprecedented crises have emerged, such as COVID-19 and the Ukraine war, that have threatened food security and the resilience of livelihoods, value chains and food systems. The chapters in this book assess Uganda's progressive refugee policy with reference to how it functioned in the era of COVID-19. They focus on the following three main areas: (i) the economic relationship and coexistence between host and refugees' communities; (ii) the success and sustainability of the current model of assistance; and (iii) the response to COVID-19 on communities' welfare and long-term prospects. Addressing these issues is possible due to a unique panel dataset of thirteen refugee settlements and neighbouring host communities specifically collected for these purposes.

Investigating the economic consequences of the integration between host and refugees' communities and offering new evidence with specific reference to Uganda, this book will be a key resource for scholars, researchers and practitioners of development studies, African studies, economics, and sociology. It was originally published as a special issue of The Journal of Development Studies.

Pham explores North Vietnam's unique challenges and perspectives to provide a holistic understanding of the Vietnam War. Delving into the emotional, philosophical and cultural dimensions of Northern Vietnamese experiences, this book transcends mere military strategy to illuminate how these elements shaped the nation's identity, beliefs and self-conception.

The book's multifaceted approach fosters a deeper understanding of North Vietnam's wartime journey. Beginning with the 1954 division of Vietnam, it probes into the ideological battles and propaganda efforts of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) and examines historical precedents, Communist ideology, and propaganda slogans. Drawing upon historical records, personal anecdotes and cultural insights, it offers readers an intimate chronicle of North Vietnam's odyssey. By focusing on the cultural, psychological and ideological dimensions of the DRV's struggle, it fills a gap in the existing literature surrounding Northern Vietnamese experiences and perspectives.

A valuable resource for scholars, students, researchers and political scientists interested in the field of history, communication, war studies, peace and conflict studies, as well as the Vietnam War's historical and contemporary implications.

This timely Companion provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between applied ethics and the development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Adopting a holistic approach, an array of global experts identify the norms at stake, map the legal landscape, and contextualize normative expectations in relevant use cases of AI.

The Elgar Companion to Applied AI Ethics explores the principles and notions that stakeholders confront in the development and implementation of AI technologies. Chapters examine the EU and US approaches to AI legalization, and question the extent to which different legal strategies adopted by Western governments foster a common international understanding of AI regulation. Diverse case studies of applied AI are discussed, covering autonomous driving, digital finance, AI and education, virtual cities, video games, and social robots. Ultimately, the Companion emphasizes the importance of incorporating non-Western perspectives into the global discourse on AI ethics and highlights the need to create effective frameworks which prevent AI solutions from negatively impacting individuals' mental health.

This Companion is an invaluable resource for legal students and academics working in AI, information technology, social sciences, computer sciences, and human rights. Its practical implications for the future of technology will also be of interest to professionals working in international public policy and management staff concerned with digital ethics.

Yasmine Hasnaoui's The Western Sahara Deadlock: Understanding Algeria's Role and the Path to Resolution investigates the extent of continuity and change of Algeria's foreign policy in the Western Sahara conflict following Algerian independence in 1962. The deterioration of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Algeria is a result of a deep-rooted rivalry over the conflict. Morocco's diplomatic discourse over the past decade asserts that Algeria's direct involvement is the main reason for its perpetuation. Algeria, on the other hand, denies such accusations, claiming instead that the Sahara conflict is a UN matter, labelling Morocco as the last colonizing power on the African continent. To verify the validity of these contradictory allegations, Hasnaoui examines major factors, including geographical continuity and security interaction, that have influenced the creation and implementation of Algerian foreign policy with respect to the Western Sahara conflict. Hasnaoui sheds light on the current atmosphere of Algerian-Moroccan relations, Algeria's role in the Western Sahara conflict, and the consequences related to its failure to achieve a full Maghreb integration.

What was the effect of the numerous, albeit often unsatisfied, plans for development on the land and communities of the Kilombero valley throughout the colonial period and after independence? This book traces histories of development in - and crucially, visions of development for - the Kilombero valley of south-central Tanzania. Taking the notion of development planning as a form of 'future making', the book examines the many visions or 'past futures' projected onto Kilombero by colonial and national governments, by international organisations, syndicates, and individuals. It examines how such plans were conceived, evaluates their successes, and analyses their shortcomings against changing political and economic landscapes. Four key themes - agricultural intensification, ecology control, infrastructure and (re)settlement - are shown to persistently surface and continue to shape the valleyscape today. By considering past future visions for the reorganisation of rural life in Tanzania, the book reveals how even recent initiatives have suffered through their failure to learn from this history. Offering fresh insights and approaches to the historiography of development, Visions for an African Valley shows Kilombero to be a prism which refracts broader phenomena across more than a century.

This book explores the media and cultural exchanges between Africa and China in the twenty-first century against the backdrop of the rise of Africa and China in global geopolitics. It situates these cultural encounters in historical and contemporary contexts and through the critical lens of the Global South. It identifies a rising Global South consciousness, despite lingering historical entanglements and emotional ambivalences that continue to characterise Africa-China relations.

Bringing together scholars from various disciplines and from different parts of the world, this book examines a wide range of cultural expressions such as arts, literature, translated works, traditional and digital media artefacts and services, and film festivals. It also interrogates emerging cultural interactions, experiences and practices engendered by the increasingly digitalised information and communication technology infrastructure underpinning Africa-China connections and links. In doing so, the book contributes to a more nuanced understanding of Africa-China relations today and the concept of the Global South.

The book Youth, Identity, and Re-Fashioning of Popular Music in Israel. 1950s?1980s aims to refresh the understanding of the relationship between social power relations, youth culture, and popular music in Israel. The authors discuss various perspectives regarding the axis of youth, popular culture, and music and present additional options for the discourse on these topics in Israel. Among its many new findings, the study discusses new insights relating to the increasing openness of Israeli culture to globalization, the decline of the collective culture of the Sabra, the rise of individual culture, liberalism and neoliberalism, the decay of Israeli consensus, and the melting pot idea and practices. In addition, the authors examine various perspectives on how Israeli culture and music have changed over the years and reacted to historical alterations. It reviews the tensions between modernism and postmodernism, localism and globalism, teenagers and their parents’ culture, ethnicity and class, hegemonic negotiations, and marginal subcultures. This book uses historical methodology combined with the assistance of cultural theories, historical surveys, and first-hand documents.

How did a diversity of intermediaries shape not only the everyday divisions but also the dynamics and growth of the colonial city? This is the central question of Dividing Dar. Focusing on South Asian elites, Askari soldiers and police, and a minority of European settlers, the book illustrates how three continents converged to produce the colonial city in East Africa. Dividing Dar shows how negotiations, ranging from contestation to anti-colonial resistance, derailed German colonial plans to transform African "cosmopolitanism" into neatly divided races and city spaces. Dividing Dar offers a novel approach to colonial urban history. In contrast to the traditional focus on top-down urban planning, knowledge production, and municipal politics, the book builds on a growing body of literature on colonial intermediaries and urbanism "from the middle" to address questions of historical agency, the construction of sociocultural hierarchies, and the mutations of African urbanism under the forces of German colonial occupation.

It has traditionally been accepted that one cannot derive how the world ought to be from the way the world is. The discipline of bioethics endeavors to respond to ethical issues as they arise in the world. For these issues to be analyzed, they must first be described. Redescribing Bioethics: How the Field Constructs Its Argument argues the descriptions bioethicists provide of the moral problems anticipate the proposed solution to these problems. To understand the rhetorical power of bioethics arguments, we need to reverse the structure of the argument, seeing the anticipated solution as driving the presentation of the problem.

Arguing the story of bioethics is as much one of powerful redescriptions as of proposed solutions, Tod S. Chambers examines seven rhetorical strategies in how bioethics texts have steered readers toward a particular moral vision of the world: retrodiction, anagnorisis, imbalance, dissociation, metaphor, sources, and hypertextuality. Through these techniques, bioethicists construct a world in which their particular moral theory thrives, and alternative theories will struggle.

Creolizing Marcuse bridges the gap between traditional interpretations of Herbert Marcuse and Caribbean/Africana theory. It challenges the rigid boundaries often found in Marcusean scholarship, especially those shaped by ideas of purity and scarcity, both historically and in current debates. Rather than simplifying Marcuse's theory, this book embraces its complexity to offer new insights into contemporary discussions on freedom, reciprocity, liberation, oppression, repression, and object relations theory. Creolizing Marcuse moves beyond producing static theoretical frameworks, instead urging decolonial, anti-racist, feminist, and queer scholars to actively incorporate Marcuse's ideas into evolving, practical approaches to difference and social justice. The book calls for theorists, activists, and scholar-activists alike to engage in ongoing, dynamic practices that resist standing still.

In the early twentieth century, Chinese intellectuals came to realize that Westerners surpassed them not only in knowledge of the world, but also in knowledge of China itself. A rising generation of Chinese scientists, engineers, and administrators was eager to address this state of affairs and began to retrace the footsteps of Western explorers who had crisscrossed China during the preceding century. The nine case studies assembled in this book show how a new cohort of professional Chinese explorers traveled, studied, appropriated, and reshaped national space from the 1920s to the 1950s. In some instances, the explorers drew directly from the fieldwork practices of their Western predecessors. In others, they trained compilers to collect and systematize local knowledge that could be passed up the administrative hierarchy to government and national institutions. Their projects helped to claim natural resources, prepare for infrastructural development, and create new institutionalized knowledge and public engagement with textual representations of China’s geobody. This book elucidates the ways in which knowledge production in early twentieth-century China centered on space and contributed to China’s transformation into a modern nation-state.

The book analyses how racial knowledge has circulated in transnational entanglements, particularly between Germany and India, into the research on human variation in India, racializing the understanding of caste and ethnicity. It focuses on the legacy of Irawati Karve (1905-1970), a Indian anthropologist trained at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Eugenics, and Human Heredity in Berlin, Germany (1927-1930) and a prominent scientist in post-colonial India. Besides a historical analysis of Karve’s adaptation of racial approaches to the study of Indian castes, the book applies material-semiotic and ethnographic lenses to examine how her work is taken up today in anthropology and population genetics. By showing how transnational and transcolonial entanglements in race science shape knowledge on human diversity in India, the book offers novel insights to discussions in anthropology, STS, and global history, including the racialization of difference, colonial legacies, and post-colonial sovereignty in science. It contributes to a better understanding of the co-constitution of politics and sciences of human diversity and it argues for a closer attention to inequalities as a way to de-link from the legacies of scientific racism.

This book explores the significance of Ibn Khaldun's magnum opus, the Book of Examples, to our understanding of human history and the disciplines of anthropology, history, and sociology.

Operating outside of the confines of the Western intellectual tradition, Ibn Khaldun's the Book of Examples is perhaps the first attempt to propose a global history of humanity. In doing so, Ibn Khaldun pioneered approaches from what we today term sociology, anthropology, ecology, economics, geography, and urban studies. Drawing upon the Muqaddima and the other volumes of the Kitab al-Ibar, Cheddadi proposes novel ways of viewing human history and classifying societies. While Ibn Khaldun's attempts to develop a true global history were ultimately flawed, Cheddadi argues that they nevertheless offer pertinent lessons for our attempts to write a global history and to understand the world today.

This stimulating and original work on a seminal figure in Islamic sociology and historiography will be of interest to students and researchers across the humanities and social sciences.

This book uncovers how women's movements in the Global South are changing the face of transnational activism in their mobilisations against militarism and conflict-related gender violence.

Drawing on the case study of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement established by Nigerian women for the rescue of Nigerian schoolgirls abducted in 2014 by violent extremist group Boko Haram, the book argues that BBOG is one of several emerging forms of transnational resistance in Africa that are breaking old moulds and forging new directions for social movements globally. The book argues that current research on social movements focuses too much on professional advocacy by formal civil society organisations and networks in the Global North. In doing so, it misses the increasingly spontaneous, mass-based protests initiated and led by Global South actors grounded in Global South contexts. Unpacking the workings of the BBOG movement, both internationally and regarding on-the-ground daily struggles in Nigeria, the book highlights their considerable implications for the practice and study of international politics.

This book is an important read for researchers of international relations, decolonisation, social movements, and transnational human rights activism. Activists and leaders of social movements will also find the policy implications highlighted by the book useful.

In this expanded edition of The Evil of Banality, Elizabeth Minnich argues for a tragic yet hopeful explanation of "extensive evil," her term for systematic, normalized harm-doing on the scale of genocide, slavery, sexualized dominance. The book now includes a new preface, new chapter, and expanded afterword addressing ongoing extensive evils, the paradox of lying, and the importance of developing the thinking without which conscience remains mute.

Extensive evils are actually carried out not by psychopaths, but by people like your quiet next-door neighbor, your ambitious colleagues. There simply are not enough moral monsters to do the long hard work of extensive evils, nor enough saints for extensive good. In periods of extensive evil, people little different from you and me do its work for no more than a better job, a raise, the house of the family "disappeared" last week.

So how can there be hope? Such evils are neither mysterious nor demonic. If we avoid romanticizing both the worst and best of which humans are capable, we can recognize and say no to extensive evil, practice and sustain extensive good, where they must take root - in ordinary lives.

According to conventional wisdom, France's empire in sub- Saharan Africa ended peacefully. But this book tells a different story. The shocking violence of a secret war roiled Cameroon in the 1950s and '60s. A mass movement for self-determination had emerged under the leadership of the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC), and France responded with brutal repression. As in Algeria, French forces waged a bloody counterinsurgency campaign. They eventually eradicated the opposition and installed a client dictatorship in the capital, Yaounde.

With the world focused on the Algerian bloodbath, the conflict in Cameroon received little attention at the time. Its devastating aftermath - and tens of thousands of victims - were intentionally obscured by French authorities and their local collaborators. The Cameroon War uncovers this hidden history. It illuminates a forgotten struggle for decolonisation at the origin of neocolonial rule in Francophone Africa, a story that is still unfolding today.
