We joked often-laughed to the point of crying (that deep visceral laughter)-not just about the subversive antics of Letao, but to all the allusions to how he, my friend, and I, were tricksters in our own right, moving between our cultural worlds, illuminating ambiguities and celebrating them."

This rich, experimental ethnography plays within the margins of mythology and ethnographic practice to pursue a decolonizing method of inquiry and intercultural engagement. Through a range of mischievous narratives about the mythological trickster Letao, a riM?ajel? (Indigenous Marshall Islander) storyteller takes the author on a journey into a deep cosmological and epistemological past and back into the colonial and imperial present. Transcribed in this book, the simultaneously effortless and pointedly deliberate conversations between author Phillip H. McArthur and respected riM?ajel? elder Kometo Albot subvert and dismantle boundaries of time, culture, and religion.

Through lighthearted dialogue, Kometo explores serious histories of imperial abuse, war, atomic bomb testing, ideologies of social power, decolonization, Christianity, magic, sex, and death. He plays upon a range of ambiguities such as the slipperiness of mythic discourse, ethnographic entanglements, ambivalent analogies about Americans, cosmological musings about Western and Indigenous deities, the complexities of matrilineal kinship and modern manifestations of power, the interplay of magic within politics and religion, the social efficacy of ideologies of deception and revelation through divination, the way by which risky topics and profane stories bring the sacred into relief, and prophecies that presage the end of culture and the death of the trickster.

In this way of relating, the boundaries blur between ethnographer and subject and the theories of myth and folklore; all become part of the dialogic process. The author critically attends to his positionality, as well as to how Kometo slyly positions them through his jokes and in drawing the author into trickster mythologies. Written in a narrative style that combines transcribed dialogue, poetic ethnographic descriptions, applied theory and sharp analysis, and storytelling, this book grants us insight into a decade-long friendship and honors the wisdom of a trickster.

Throughout its history Siam and then later Thailand has shown remarkable resiliency, adaptability, and creativity in responding to serious threats and crises. This augurs well for Thailand's capacity to deal with the serious problems described above and to flourish in the areas in which it has great potential and comparative advantage, such as food exports ("kitchen of the world"); diverse genres of tourism; health and wellness management; creative design; alternative energy sources (great potential of solar energy and e-vehicles); regional transportation hub (both rail and air); export growth and diversification; an attractive site for MICE; and as an international education hub. Thailand clearly has the potential to become one of the most distinct, vibrant, creative, and diverse societies of the dynamic Asia-Pacific region.
Historical Dictionary of Thailand, Fourth Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 1,000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country's politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Thailand.

Children remain at the periphery when bioethics envisions autonomous adults as normative human beings. Children, Theology, and Bioethics: Beyond Autonomy explores the full humanity of children, inviting greater recognition of their place in the moral landscape of healthcare. Theological insights into vulnerability, dependence, and agency summon appreciation for the experiences of pediatric patients and reveal what it means to be human at every age. Interdisciplinary dialogue between bioethics, childhood studies, and pastoral theology is woven throughout with illustrative clinical vignettes from Bratt Carle's experience as a pediatric chaplain and clinical ethicist.

This volume takes ending the oppression of other animals seriously and confronts the question 'What would happen to all the animals?' by showcasing real, promissory, and imagined counter-sites or heterotopia, where animals 'happen' in different ways, free of anthropocentric orders of value and purpose.

Rejecting persistent understandings of the oppression of nonhuman animals, across the entire breadth of the Animal-Industrial Complex (A-IC), as either non-existent, unproblematic, and/or fundamentally unalterable - open to merely being reduced in scale or made less harmful - the collection offers readers a variety of pathways towards radically 'disordered' ways of thinking about and relating to other animals. Over 14 chapters, authors describe more liberatory relational reconfigurations playing out in the present and undertake conceptual, imaginative, and embodied explorations of liberatory futures. The chapters are united by a common commitment to heterotopic disturbance - to contesting and subverting the anthropo-capitalo-centric space in which we live. Each chapter approaches this subversion in its own way, using prefiguration, restorying, speculation, radical imagination, and combinations thereof, to disturb or shatter orders, explore the kinds of liberation and resistance their disturbance demonstrates, demands, or embodies, and ultimately illustrate exactly what would or could happen to all the animals.

Heterotopia, Radical Imagination, and Shattering Orders will appeal to scholars, students, and individuals interested not only in challenging normalised binaries, hierarchies, and orders of value, both human and nonhuman, but in creating and realising liberatory alternatives. Scholar-activists, activists, professionals working in animal advocacy, and anyone undertaking activities aimed at radically changing how other animals are understood and used will also find inspiration, new insights, and information that enhance their current methods and approaches. Some readers may also find simply confirmation and comfort in the knowledge that so many others are working in solidarity with the 'disordered' belief that shattering the A-IC is possible.

Following the horrific attack on October 7, support for a devastating military retaliation and resolution has taken center stage. Nevertheless, within Israel, numerous critical voices cast doubt on the sustainability of such approaches. They champion the principles of morality, legality, and common sense as the true keys to a lasting solution. This book focuses on these voices which are critical of Israeli government policies. They are deeply grieving and affected by the October 7 attack, while also able to hold both Palestinian and Israeli pain and aspirations not as mutually exclusive, but as an impetus for creating a better and more equitable future for all who inhabit the land. It chronicles the reactions of intellectuals and scholars to unfolding events. All the pieces in this volume have been written in the span of about a month from October 7 and comprise an archive of a particular discourse taking shape in Israel at this historical juncture.

The Nature of Kingship is an innovative exploration of dynastic power and the environment in nineteenth-century Vietnam. It offers important insights into Vietnamese kingship by delving into the intricate workings of the Nguy?n court and its interactions with the natural world. Weaving together a rich array of sources including official histories, royal poetry, astrological manuals, geography texts, and provincial gazetteers, Kathryn Dyt vividly demonstrates how Nguy?n governance and court hierarchies were intertwined with a powerful, agentive, and emotional "weather-world"-a world inhabited by ecological actors such as rain, wind, land, and skies.

While previous narratives have often faulted Nguy?n rulers for being aloof and detached from their surroundings, this new study considers how Nguy?n dynastic rule was in fact highly responsive to its setting and sensitive to the environment. It shows that Nguy?n kings were not static, inert individuals, cut off from the world, but rather were intensely engaged with their environment and its cosmological and spiritual dimensions. Placing kings in the thick of lived experience, in a land perceived to be alive and responsive to human incantations, prayers, and pleas, this account demonstrates how Nguy?n rulers consolidated their authority through displays of superior weather knowledge and modes of affective rule rooted in reciprocal emotional resonance with the weather-world. The king's exemplary affective responsiveness to the weather was central to his preeminence and it was a means by which the court validated its power within Vietnam's extensive social field. Exploring kingship from phenomenological perspectives, this wide-reaching study addresses diverse forms of court engagement with the environment, including the observation of astronomical and meteorological phenomena, divination practices, rainmaking rituals, travel through the kingdom, the writing of environmental histories, and imperial poetry.

The Trade-Offs of Legal Status explores the costs, risks, and unfreedoms produced alongside migrant regularization in Southeast Asia. In 2017, Thailand's military government enacted a new migration law cracking down on unauthorized employment, coupled with an extensive regularization campaign seeking to grant legal status to migrants already working in the country. Between 2017 and 2018, more than a million migrants gained legal status. Based on multisited ethnography of that time, and informed by a decade of experience researching migrant communities in Cambodia, Maryann Bylander describes the experiences of Cambodians confronting Thailand's intensifying migration infrastructure. In this evolving landscape, migrations are increasingly shaped by formalized documents, complex systems of brokerage, collateralized debts, and state control.

Traversing across the Cambodia-Thai borderlands, the book covers a wide range: from deportation centers; to pop-up documentation sites; to safe migration trainings; to international policy meetings; and to migrant communities. Through vivid, accessible storytelling, the author describes the experiences of Cambodians as they navigate Thailand's increasingly strict and costly documentation regime. While Cambodians want legal status for the protections they believe it will offer, Bylander shows that documentation has ambiguous and often unwanted effects-documents are easily invalidated, can create harsh constraints, and routinely lead to new debts. At the same time, documents do not always offer meaningful protection, or improve working conditions. Together, these stories challenge the discourses and programming of "safe migration" campaigns, which are a growing area of engagement for nongovernmental and international organizations. While safe-migration efforts assume that regular, orderly migrations will produce safer, more beneficial migrations, the experiences of Cambodians in Thailand suggest otherwise.

The Trade-Offs of Legal Status is the first book to explore the lives of Cambodian migrants in Thailand, offering insight to students and scholars in sociology, anthropology, development studies, geography, migration studies, and Southeast Asian studies. Through its grounded exploration of a case of migration, the book offers a rare ethnographic portrait of migration and development in Southeast Asia.

Anyone genuinely curious about what makes South Korean pop culture tick should look no further than Gangnam. Celebrated in a song by an unlikely K-pop superstar named Psy in 2012, Gangnam is the epicenter of Hallyu, the Korean Wave. It is an exclusive zone of privilege and wealth that has lured pop culture industries since the 1980s and fueled the aspirations of Seoul's middle class, producing in its wake the "dialectical images" of the modern city described by Walter Benjamin: sweet dreams and nightmares, visions of heaven and hell, scenes of spectacular rises and great falls. In Polarizing Dreams, Pil Ho Kim presents South Korea's Gangman-style urban development as a unique case of cultural globalization in the age of social polarization.

Unlike previous genre- or industry-focused publications on Hallyu, Polarizing Dreams mobilizes sources that may be unknown to many K-pop fans-dissident poetry and protest songs from the 1980s, B-rated adult films, tour bus disco music, obscure early works by famous authors and filmmakers, interviews with sex workers and urban entrepreneurs-to weave together Gangnam's rich backstory and give readers a deeper appreciation of such acclaimed films as Bong Joon Ho's Parasite and Lee Chang-dong's Burning and the Netflix drama series Squid Game. Kim takes an unflinching look at the darker side of Korean society that includes school bullying, entertainment industry scandals, and misogynistic violence, all of which have provided compelling narratives for an increasing number of Hallyu media products. The Gangnam portrayed in this volume is the site of rampant disaster capitalism and rising inequality as well as the engine of cultural and technological innovation. In short, Gangnam is at the heart of Korea's global-polarization.

As one of a handful of books on Korean cultural history that bridges the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries, Polarizing Dreams will have a lasting impact on the study of Korean pop culture and beyond.

Among all the Korean dynasties, the Koryo dynasty (918-1392) was the first to have contact with the Western world. It was from these interactions that the current appellation of "Korea" was derived from the Koryo name. The Koryosa, or the History of Koryo, is one of the most significant historical texts on the Koryo Dynasty of the Korean peninsula. As the principal surviving history, the Koryosa elucidates the politics, society, economy, culture, and key figures of this period. Although the Koryosa was compiled during the Choson dynasty (1392-1910), much of the known information about Koryo is contained within this text, making it the primary text for understanding 500 years of premodern Korean history, culture, and civilization. This translation is the first, full-length, English-language translation of the introductory section of the Koryosa and the first ten volumes of the annals of the kings, beginning with the dynastic founder, T'aejo Wang Kon (r. 918-943) to the fourteenth monarch, Honjong (r. 1095). The nearly two hundred years of Koryo history encompassed within the first ten volumes of the annals provides invaluable insight into the birth and development of Koryo state and society, as well as the rituals and practices of warfare, diplomacy, and international relations with neighboring territories, including the Khitan, Jurchen, and Song China. The wealth of information has been integral to knowing Korea's past, offering lessons from history that are relevant to understanding modern-day Korea. Made readable to an English-language audience, this translation will interest researchers across East Asian history, and of various fields including religion, philosophy, and culture.

Chieftains, Lamas, and Warriors: A History of Kham 1904-1961 explores the region of Kham, situated between Central Tibet and China. By highlighting Kham's pivotal role in Sino-Tibetan relations and frontier dynamics, this book challenges the traditional focus of scholarly research that treat Kham as a mere transit point. Yudru Tsomu argues for the significance of frontier regions in shaping historical narratives and power structures. Tsomu explores how Kham forged its own identity amidst the assimilation pressures exerted by Central Tibet and China. Supported by a wealth of original sources in Chinese, Tibetan, and Western languages-including previously untapped personal and archival collections in China-this book offers a compelling reassessment of Kham's historical agency and significance.

This book studies the history of contemporary Chinese fiction criticism, highlighting the role of critics in shaping contemporary literary history.

The author divides the history of contemporary Chinese fiction criticism into three periods: 1949-1976, 1977-1991, and 1992-2015. The first period saw the emergence of the circle of critics who insisted on judging literary works by political standards. The second period brought the rise of the Beijing Critics' Circle and the Shanghai Critics' Circle. The former advocated "artistic standards" in judging works, while the latter introduced contemporary Western literary theories into literary criticism. The third period marked the emergence of "Scholarly Criticism," "Criticism of Women's Fiction," and "Post-1960s Fiction Criticism," reflecting critics' attitudes toward history and philosophy. Drawing on historical materials, this study illuminates contemporary literary trends and the contributions of key writers and critics. It also relates literary criticism to the social environment, underlining the simultaneous relationship between contemporary fiction criticism and social ideology.

This book will be invaluable to scholars and students of Chinese literature and literary criticism, especially those interested in the diverse landscape of contemporary Chinese culture.

In his late writings, Marx went beyond the boundaries of capital and class in the Western European and North American contexts. Kevin Anderson carries out a systematic analysis of Marx's Ethnological Notebooks and related texts on Russia, India, Ireland, Algeria, Latin America, and ancient Rome. These texts, some of them only now being published, provide evidence for a change of perspective, away from Eurocentric worldviews or unilinear theories of development. As Anderson shows, the late Marx elaborated a truly global, multilinear theory of modern society and its revolutionary possibilities.

Bangalore is looked at in depth in Supriya Baily's exploration of one of India's most dynamic cities. Booklist praises the book, saying, "This deeply researched book is especially timely in light of recent gender-based violence in India."
Through the stories of a group of school girls in what used to be India's most progressive city, Bangalore Girls reveals how the freedom women once enjoyed in the "Silicon Valley of India" has been eroded by the rising tide of right-wing nationalism, misogyny, and religious fundamentalism.
Author Supriya Baily explores one of India's most dynamic cities through the eyes of a group of women who grew up and went to school together in the late 1980s and early 1990s. As they enjoyed the trappings of a burgeoning middle class, these classmates also watched their country move to the right politically and socially, spurred on by the Ayodhya riots that tore down the Babri Masjid Mosque in 1992 and the sectarian violence that followed-a Hindu nationalist tide that continues to rise today.
The book offers us a window into these women's lives and shows us how they are responding to the breakdown of progressivism across multiple domains. They discuss not only their own safety and the educational opportunities and challenges confronting their families; they also talk about such society-wide issues as anti-Muslim sentiment, the backlash against science, and the dangers of independent thinking. Baily gives voice to their worries about political cults of personality and government policies that seek to marginalize and ostracize anyone who speaks out against the authorities, but especially women.
As Indian prime minister Narendra Modi now consecrates the new Ram Temple in Ayodhya, it has never been more important to understand the wave of nationalism that began in 1992. The stories of these women told by Supriya Baily are a must-read tale of extremism's threat to women's rights and human rights.

The Abraham Accords: National Security, Regional Order, and Popular Representation is a pioneering effort in discussing and analyzing the background, motivations and implications surrounding the Abraham Accords. The authors argue for a nuanced conceptual toolkit to better break down complex strands of state, regional and international interaction, interest and concern. They point to regional dynamics being vital, especially to small states or states under attack, in terms of delivering on their security objectives and by building positions of influence. The Saudi case shows how the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, perceived US policy failures, and imperatives of Vision 2030, have coalesced to differentiate its regional relations, including attempts at both "strategic autonomy" and "relational autonomy." The degree of political consolidation, pluralism, and rentier stage are also found to be key indicators of past and future normalization trends with Israel, aspects which could have major bearings on domestic politics should the 2023 Gaza war continue or escalate further. This book includes a wealth of detail on the history and contemporary relations of Israel and Palestine and includes chapters covering all six of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, as well as Iran.

Too many of our convictions about the fifty-four nations of Africa come from non-African sources. Western media often treat the continent as a simulacrum of Western anxieties. In contrast, Jeremy Harding focuses on specific historical episodes and cultural practices - cinema, art, ethnography and journalism - to steer us away from treacherous generalisations.

Analogue Africa celebrates the ingenuity with which African artists - and a handful of Europeans - have reimagined the colonial encounter and voiced their impatience with white minority rule. Among his illustrious cast of filmmakers, photographers, writers and painters are Seydou Keita, Sanle Sory, Ernest Cole, Sarah Maldoror, John Akomfrah, William Kentridge and Binyavanga Wainaina. Harding argues that Western museums with priceless African holdings - the British Museum, the Musee du Quai Branly, the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Belgium - are now the sites of a struggle over the colonial past, adding the latest chapter to an unfinished history.

In 1913, Sierra Leone bore witness to a Special Court convened to hear cases of cannibalism. Described as "Human Leopards," those accused of ritually killing and eating others were associated with a criminal group, and in the wake of the cases, many accused and convicted Human Leopards were executed or exiled from the colony. Contemporary writers described these events in the rhetoric of the "civilized world" triumphing over the "barbaric," and newspapers of the period wallowed in the lurid idea of shapeshifting cannibals lurking to murder and devour the innocent. Cannibalism Myths, Empire, and Identity in Colonial Sierra Leone by Katrina HB Keefer offers new perspectives on these trials, delving closely into the transcripts of the 1913 Human Leopard cases. Through careful analysis of evidence and modern scholarship, it's clear that cannibalism was never at play in these murder cases, and Keefer presents a complex web of judicial overreach, colonial ambitions, xenophobic fears, socio-political turmoil, animals whose habitats were being encroached upon, and powerful initiation societies.

It has traditionally been accepted that one cannot derive how the world ought to be from the way the world is. The discipline of bioethics endeavors to respond to ethical issues as they arise in the world. For these issues to be analyzed, they must first be described. Redescribing Bioethics: How the Field Constructs Its Argument argues the descriptions bioethicists provide of the moral problems anticipate the proposed solution to these problems. To understand the rhetorical power of bioethics arguments, we need to reverse the structure of the argument, seeing the anticipated solution as driving the presentation of the problem.

Arguing the story of bioethics is as much one of powerful redescriptions as of proposed solutions, Tod S. Chambers examines seven rhetorical strategies in how bioethics texts have steered readers toward a particular moral vision of the world: retrodiction, anagnorisis, imbalance, dissociation, metaphor, sources, and hypertextuality. Through these techniques, bioethicists construct a world in which their particular moral theory thrives, and alternative theories will struggle.

In this expanded edition of The Evil of Banality, Elizabeth Minnich argues for a tragic yet hopeful explanation of "extensive evil," her term for systematic, normalized harm-doing on the scale of genocide, slavery, sexualized dominance. The book now includes a new preface, new chapter, and expanded afterword addressing ongoing extensive evils, the paradox of lying, and the importance of developing the thinking without which conscience remains mute.

Extensive evils are actually carried out not by psychopaths, but by people like your quiet next-door neighbor, your ambitious colleagues. There simply are not enough moral monsters to do the long hard work of extensive evils, nor enough saints for extensive good. In periods of extensive evil, people little different from you and me do its work for no more than a better job, a raise, the house of the family "disappeared" last week.

So how can there be hope? Such evils are neither mysterious nor demonic. If we avoid romanticizing both the worst and best of which humans are capable, we can recognize and say no to extensive evil, practice and sustain extensive good, where they must take root - in ordinary lives.

The book contributes to the critical debate of exogenous state- and democracy-building experiments pursued in the aftermath of Western-led intervention in war-torn societies. The mistakes committed by the principal intervener, the United States, at the zero hour of state-building in Afghanistan, could not be rectified in the following years of intervention. The 'multilateral state and democracy building project' remained a 'unilateral decision-making project' in practice, making it less cost-effective. Furthermore, a systematic inquiry into the processes establishes the rationale that political change is not the guarantor of social change in conflict-ridden societies like Afghanistan. Failure of the Afghanistan state- and democracy-building experiment clearly shows that the US cannot fix the world according to its own ideas.

The Ryukyu islands have been inhabited by humans for over 30,000 years. Their modern population, however, did not come from stone-age ancestors, nor did distinctive forms of Ryukyuan culture, such as sacred groves or stone-walled castles, emerge from within the islands. Instead, different groups of people lived in the Ryukyu islands at various points in history. Starting with the earliest extant human remains and ending with the formation of a centralized state in the early 1500s, Early Ryukyuan History traces the people, culture, technologies, goods, and networks that entered different parts of Ryukyu over time. In the process, it synthesizes decades of research in archaeology and anthropology, recent advances in genetic evidence, and conventional documentary sources to advance a new model for the early development of the Ryukyu islands, thoroughly rewriting early Ryukyuan history.

Taking a multidisciplinary approach grounded in archaeology, this resource presents an updated framework for understanding early Ryukyu along with a new narrative featuring a fascinating cast of characters. Linked by the ocean into the East China Sea, the early Ryukyu islands were never isolated. People and technologies arrived from across the sea and became the prime movers of early Ryukyuan society. The most consequential of these external agents were waves of immigrants, mainly from the Japanese islands, who settled the Ryukyu islands during the eleventh and twelfth centuries and replaced the islands' previous Jomon population. While the physical environment of the Ryukyu islands was not conducive to cereal agriculture, the islands were well situated for trading and raiding, and trade became the driving force behind societal development.

In Early Ryukyuan History, Gregory Smits reappraises the most fundamental questions and topics in early Ryukyuan history, providing new models of migration and settlement, regional trade, political geography, warfare, and state formation.

Won explores the untold story of immigration in South Korea through a new precariat lens. Unlike traditional narratives, this book sheds light on the complexities of Korea's evolving immigration landscape, offering readers a fresh, multidimensional perspective.

While its primary focus is on Korea, the text covers other countries such as Japan, the United States, Germany, Australia, and Canada. Coupled with a triadic focus, it provides a comparative analysis between Western and Asian countries, offering insights into shared experiences and unique nuances shaping immigration realities. It uncovers private realms, exploring the challenges faced by immigrants, particularly marriage migrant women, and its gendered dynamics. It also blends theories from various disciplines with rich empirical data, giving readers a comprehensive understanding of the profound implications surrounding international immigration and immigrants' experiences, not only in the Korean immigration regime but also in various types of immigration regimes.

A unique read for academics, undergraduates, and postgraduates in the fields of Asian studies, public administration, immigration, political science, sociology, and comparative policy studies.
