The Trade-Offs of Legal Status explores the costs, risks, and unfreedoms produced alongside migrant regularization in Southeast Asia. In 2017, Thailand's military government enacted a new migration law cracking down on unauthorized employment, coupled with an extensive regularization campaign seeking to grant legal status to migrants already working in the country. Between 2017 and 2018, more than a million migrants gained legal status. Based on multisited ethnography of that time, and informed by a decade of experience researching migrant communities in Cambodia, Maryann Bylander describes the experiences of Cambodians confronting Thailand's intensifying migration infrastructure. In this evolving landscape, migrations are increasingly shaped by formalized documents, complex systems of brokerage, collateralized debts, and state control.

Traversing across the Cambodia-Thai borderlands, the book covers a wide range: from deportation centers; to pop-up documentation sites; to safe migration trainings; to international policy meetings; and to migrant communities. Through vivid, accessible storytelling, the author describes the experiences of Cambodians as they navigate Thailand's increasingly strict and costly documentation regime. While Cambodians want legal status for the protections they believe it will offer, Bylander shows that documentation has ambiguous and often unwanted effects-documents are easily invalidated, can create harsh constraints, and routinely lead to new debts. At the same time, documents do not always offer meaningful protection, or improve working conditions. Together, these stories challenge the discourses and programming of "safe migration" campaigns, which are a growing area of engagement for nongovernmental and international organizations. While safe-migration efforts assume that regular, orderly migrations will produce safer, more beneficial migrations, the experiences of Cambodians in Thailand suggest otherwise.

The Trade-Offs of Legal Status is the first book to explore the lives of Cambodian migrants in Thailand, offering insight to students and scholars in sociology, anthropology, development studies, geography, migration studies, and Southeast Asian studies. Through its grounded exploration of a case of migration, the book offers a rare ethnographic portrait of migration and development in Southeast Asia.

The encounter of indigenous history-making tradition with Western historical practice has been long neglected in Southeast Asian scholarship. Theara Thun offers one of the first critical and systematic studies of the interface between these two distinctive modes of historical presentation and their impacts on society. By examining historical discourses on Cambodia through the precolonial, colonial, and post-independence years, he presents a compelling account of indigenous scholars, with varying perspectives, who advocated competing versions of history. Thun argues that new discourses about national history emerged by drawing on, reconfiguring, combining, or, in many cases, rejecting older discourses of precolonial historical scholarship.

Epistemology of the Past examines how certain types and forms of historical knowledge are created, understood, and used within a given context and how that knowledge has evolved over time. The book brings together and critically explores a large collection of original manuscripts and printed texts-notably, Khmer chronicle manuscripts and colonial-era works of French scholar-officials. Thun's analysis discloses multilayers of intellectual traditions and diverse views of Cambodian and, more broadly, Southeast Asian scholars engaging with European colonial scholarship. In addition to contributing to the multidisciplinary field of Cambodian and Southeast Asian studies, Epistemology of the Past will be essential reading for those interested in intellectual history, transculturation, historiography, intertextual studies, narrative studies, literature, colonialism, and nationalism.

Anyone genuinely curious about what makes South Korean pop culture tick should look no further than Gangnam. Celebrated in a song by an unlikely K-pop superstar named Psy in 2012, Gangnam is the epicenter of Hallyu, the Korean Wave. It is an exclusive zone of privilege and wealth that has lured pop culture industries since the 1980s and fueled the aspirations of Seoul's middle class, producing in its wake the "dialectical images" of the modern city described by Walter Benjamin: sweet dreams and nightmares, visions of heaven and hell, scenes of spectacular rises and great falls. In Polarizing Dreams, Pil Ho Kim presents South Korea's Gangman-style urban development as a unique case of cultural globalization in the age of social polarization.

Unlike previous genre- or industry-focused publications on Hallyu, Polarizing Dreams mobilizes sources that may be unknown to many K-pop fans-dissident poetry and protest songs from the 1980s, B-rated adult films, tour bus disco music, obscure early works by famous authors and filmmakers, interviews with sex workers and urban entrepreneurs-to weave together Gangnam's rich backstory and give readers a deeper appreciation of such acclaimed films as Bong Joon Ho's Parasite and Lee Chang-dong's Burning and the Netflix drama series Squid Game. Kim takes an unflinching look at the darker side of Korean society that includes school bullying, entertainment industry scandals, and misogynistic violence, all of which have provided compelling narratives for an increasing number of Hallyu media products. The Gangnam portrayed in this volume is the site of rampant disaster capitalism and rising inequality as well as the engine of cultural and technological innovation. In short, Gangnam is at the heart of Korea's global-polarization.

As one of a handful of books on Korean cultural history that bridges the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries, Polarizing Dreams will have a lasting impact on the study of Korean pop culture and beyond.

Among all the Korean dynasties, the Koryo dynasty (918-1392) was the first to have contact with the Western world. It was from these interactions that the current appellation of "Korea" was derived from the Koryo name. The Koryosa, or the History of Koryo, is one of the most significant historical texts on the Koryo Dynasty of the Korean peninsula. As the principal surviving history, the Koryosa elucidates the politics, society, economy, culture, and key figures of this period. Although the Koryosa was compiled during the Choson dynasty (1392-1910), much of the known information about Koryo is contained within this text, making it the primary text for understanding 500 years of premodern Korean history, culture, and civilization. This translation is the first, full-length, English-language translation of the introductory section of the Koryosa and the first ten volumes of the annals of the kings, beginning with the dynastic founder, T'aejo Wang Kon (r. 918-943) to the fourteenth monarch, Honjong (r. 1095). The nearly two hundred years of Koryo history encompassed within the first ten volumes of the annals provides invaluable insight into the birth and development of Koryo state and society, as well as the rituals and practices of warfare, diplomacy, and international relations with neighboring territories, including the Khitan, Jurchen, and Song China. The wealth of information has been integral to knowing Korea's past, offering lessons from history that are relevant to understanding modern-day Korea. Made readable to an English-language audience, this translation will interest researchers across East Asian history, and of various fields including religion, philosophy, and culture.

Too many of our convictions about the fifty-four nations of Africa come from non-African sources. Western media often treat the continent as a simulacrum of Western anxieties. In contrast, Jeremy Harding focuses on specific historical episodes and cultural practices - cinema, art, ethnography and journalism - to steer us away from treacherous generalisations.

Analogue Africa celebrates the ingenuity with which African artists - and a handful of Europeans - have reimagined the colonial encounter and voiced their impatience with white minority rule. Among his illustrious cast of filmmakers, photographers, writers and painters are Seydou Keita, Sanle Sory, Ernest Cole, Sarah Maldoror, John Akomfrah, William Kentridge and Binyavanga Wainaina. Harding argues that Western museums with priceless African holdings - the British Museum, the Musee du Quai Branly, the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Belgium - are now the sites of a struggle over the colonial past, adding the latest chapter to an unfinished history.

In 1913, Sierra Leone bore witness to a Special Court convened to hear cases of cannibalism. Described as "Human Leopards," those accused of ritually killing and eating others were associated with a criminal group, and in the wake of the cases, many accused and convicted Human Leopards were executed or exiled from the colony. Contemporary writers described these events in the rhetoric of the "civilized world" triumphing over the "barbaric," and newspapers of the period wallowed in the lurid idea of shapeshifting cannibals lurking to murder and devour the innocent. Cannibalism Myths, Empire, and Identity in Colonial Sierra Leone by Katrina HB Keefer offers new perspectives on these trials, delving closely into the transcripts of the 1913 Human Leopard cases. Through careful analysis of evidence and modern scholarship, it's clear that cannibalism was never at play in these murder cases, and Keefer presents a complex web of judicial overreach, colonial ambitions, xenophobic fears, socio-political turmoil, animals whose habitats were being encroached upon, and powerful initiation societies.

Chieftains, Lamas, and Warriors: A History of Kham 1904-1961 explores the region of Kham, situated between Central Tibet and China. By highlighting Kham's pivotal role in Sino-Tibetan relations and frontier dynamics, this book challenges the traditional focus of scholarly research that treat Kham as a mere transit point. Yudru Tsomu argues for the significance of frontier regions in shaping historical narratives and power structures. Tsomu explores how Kham forged its own identity amidst the assimilation pressures exerted by Central Tibet and China. Supported by a wealth of original sources in Chinese, Tibetan, and Western languages-including previously untapped personal and archival collections in China-this book offers a compelling reassessment of Kham's historical agency and significance.

This book studies the history of contemporary Chinese fiction criticism, highlighting the role of critics in shaping contemporary literary history.

The author divides the history of contemporary Chinese fiction criticism into three periods: 1949-1976, 1977-1991, and 1992-2015. The first period saw the emergence of the circle of critics who insisted on judging literary works by political standards. The second period brought the rise of the Beijing Critics' Circle and the Shanghai Critics' Circle. The former advocated "artistic standards" in judging works, while the latter introduced contemporary Western literary theories into literary criticism. The third period marked the emergence of "Scholarly Criticism," "Criticism of Women's Fiction," and "Post-1960s Fiction Criticism," reflecting critics' attitudes toward history and philosophy. Drawing on historical materials, this study illuminates contemporary literary trends and the contributions of key writers and critics. It also relates literary criticism to the social environment, underlining the simultaneous relationship between contemporary fiction criticism and social ideology.

This book will be invaluable to scholars and students of Chinese literature and literary criticism, especially those interested in the diverse landscape of contemporary Chinese culture.

In his late writings, Marx went beyond the boundaries of capital and class in the Western European and North American contexts. Kevin Anderson carries out a systematic analysis of Marx's Ethnological Notebooks and related texts on Russia, India, Ireland, Algeria, Latin America, and ancient Rome. These texts, some of them only now being published, provide evidence for a change of perspective, away from Eurocentric worldviews or unilinear theories of development. As Anderson shows, the late Marx elaborated a truly global, multilinear theory of modern society and its revolutionary possibilities.

The book contributes to the critical debate of exogenous state- and democracy-building experiments pursued in the aftermath of Western-led intervention in war-torn societies. The mistakes committed by the principal intervener, the United States, at the zero hour of state-building in Afghanistan, could not be rectified in the following years of intervention. The 'multilateral state and democracy building project' remained a 'unilateral decision-making project' in practice, making it less cost-effective. Furthermore, a systematic inquiry into the processes establishes the rationale that political change is not the guarantor of social change in conflict-ridden societies like Afghanistan. Failure of the Afghanistan state- and democracy-building experiment clearly shows that the US cannot fix the world according to its own ideas.

The Ryukyu islands have been inhabited by humans for over 30,000 years. Their modern population, however, did not come from stone-age ancestors, nor did distinctive forms of Ryukyuan culture, such as sacred groves or stone-walled castles, emerge from within the islands. Instead, different groups of people lived in the Ryukyu islands at various points in history. Starting with the earliest extant human remains and ending with the formation of a centralized state in the early 1500s, Early Ryukyuan History traces the people, culture, technologies, goods, and networks that entered different parts of Ryukyu over time. In the process, it synthesizes decades of research in archaeology and anthropology, recent advances in genetic evidence, and conventional documentary sources to advance a new model for the early development of the Ryukyu islands, thoroughly rewriting early Ryukyuan history.

Taking a multidisciplinary approach grounded in archaeology, this resource presents an updated framework for understanding early Ryukyu along with a new narrative featuring a fascinating cast of characters. Linked by the ocean into the East China Sea, the early Ryukyu islands were never isolated. People and technologies arrived from across the sea and became the prime movers of early Ryukyuan society. The most consequential of these external agents were waves of immigrants, mainly from the Japanese islands, who settled the Ryukyu islands during the eleventh and twelfth centuries and replaced the islands' previous Jomon population. While the physical environment of the Ryukyu islands was not conducive to cereal agriculture, the islands were well situated for trading and raiding, and trade became the driving force behind societal development.

In Early Ryukyuan History, Gregory Smits reappraises the most fundamental questions and topics in early Ryukyuan history, providing new models of migration and settlement, regional trade, political geography, warfare, and state formation.

Drawing on a wide range of archives, historical publications, oral history, graphic, audiovisual and web sources, Geert Castryck presents Kigoma-Ujiji as both shaping and being shaped by global transformations. On the surface, the book offers almost two centuries of urban history on Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, close to the Burundian and Congolese borders, in a place that has been a transport hub throughout that time. Beneath the surface, it is also about major transformations on a global scale, and about people dealing with and coping with these global challenges far from the supposed global powerhouses. Urbanization and infrastructure, colonization and decolonization, liberalization and democratization, war refugees, world heritage and translocal identities are the entry points for interpreting transformations that are local and global at the same time. The author uses the analytical categories of "liminal space" and "portal of globalization" to link the marginality and uncertainty that characterize the successive transformations in Kigoma-Ujiji with the urban resilience and creativity used to manage these transformations.

This volume revisits the “long 19th century” in the Middle East from the perspective of emerging subjectivity as a fundamentally new attitude of the individual vis-a-vis the World. Stephan Guth’s holistic vision interprets emerging subjectivity as the key operator at the heart of the many aspects of the so-called Arab(ic) “Renaissance” (and corresponding movements in Turkish), like rationalism, critical analysis, political emancipation, reformism, moralism, and emotionalism, but also a new language, new genres, and new concepts. Guth’s thoroughly philological approach demonstrates how a close reading of literary texts from the period, a cultural-psychological interpretation of linguistic phenomena and an etymology-informed look into conceptual terminology can contribute to a deeper understanding of what “modernisation” actually meant, deep inside the human beings’ mind and psyche, in their meeting with a rapidly changing world. Twenty essays on language, literature, and key concepts reflect the author’s life-long engagement with the culture of the period in question. The articles are glued together by a guiding narrative that assigns each treated aspect its place in the author’s vision (which includes a global perspective).

This book investigates the politics of language in Hong Kong from a multidisciplinary perspective, showcasing original studies on language use in protest movements, written Cantonese, language attitudes, literary creation, mass media, and popular music.

Representing the work of scholars of various disciplines ranging from political science and history to linguistics, communication, and cultural studies, the book offers a multifaceted and timely account on the state of language in the rapidly changing city. Proposing a conceptual framework that distinguishes between language politics and the language of politics, it effectively underscores the importance of identity and ideology in studying the politics of language across different settings and disciplines.

As a study of the language issue in Hong Kong, this book is a valuable resource for scholars and students of Hong Kong studies and Chinese studies and to researchers of sociolinguistics and the politics of language.

Drawing on the conceptual framework of the unintended consequences approach, it reconceptualizes the concept and trope of the Great Game through the proxy war between Pakistan and India in Afghanistan under the Great Power competition, following the USA's shift towards India in its 'war on terror.' It examines Afghanistan's history retrospectively and prospectively, the role of the United States in this Grand Great Game of changing geopolitical and security dynamics post-9/11, India's foreign relations and its soft power engagement in Afghanistan, the implications of the Indo-Afghanistan relations, and the way forward for Pakistan and available policy options while living in a fractured neighborhood. A key intervention in South Asian geopolitics, this book will be indispensable for scholars of international relations, global politics, terrorism and counter-terrorism studies, strategic studies, and military history.

The battle cry 'Bersiap!' resounded in numerous cities and towns across Indonesia during the first months following the declaration of independence on August 17, 1945. Heard from all sides, this call to 'stand by' for the young nation's fight for freedom marked the start of the Indonesian national revolution, heralding a period of extreme violence. These acts of violence were aimed primarily against civilians and served no military purpose. Resonance of Violence outlines the dynamics of this extreme violence in which Indonesian groups took up arms against Indo-Europeans, Moluccans, Dutch and Chinese, but also against Japanese civilians and both Japanese and British (or British Indian) soldiers.

The authors expressly situate this terrifying period within the wider context of mutual Indonesian violence and the use of violence by the Japanese, British and Dutch against Indonesian citizens. Java, Sumatra, and other islands are discussed in the book, as well as the complex issue of the number of victims. Finally, they discuss the development of the term "bersiap" over the past 75 years, which grew into a key concept in the Netherlands to describe the earliest phase of the Indonesian War of Independence.

This book brings a new perspective on the formation and evolution of Critical Theory, tracing the intellectual trajectory of three of its major representatives: Horkheimer, Habermas and Honneth. It demonstrates how a theoretical project that started as a radical rethinking of Marxism, responding to the defeat of the Left in the face of Nazism, disintegrated from within and lost its initial radical potential.

Faced with the isolation of exile and the failure of the anti-fascist fronts, Horkheimer broke with his founding project and turned towards a negative philosophy of history. The coming of the next generations of the Frankfurt School allowed for a renewal of the theoretical ambition but at a high price: critique had to adapt to the order of post-war West Germany. With Habermas, critique aims to expand a public space, ignoring the contradictions of social relations; with Honneth, it becomes a therapy of the social, aiming at repairing a world instead of transforming it. From one generation to the next, Critical Theory has turned its back on the analysis of the regressive potential inherent in capitalist modernity. But its initial project has still significant resources to offer for an understanding of the present and for the emancipatory struggles of our time. To recapture its revolutionary potential, critical theory needs to return to its initial project and cross-fertilize it with other currents within Marxism and radical thought.

This book uncovers how women's movements in the Global South are changing the face of transnational activism in their mobilisations against militarism and conflict-related gender violence.

Drawing on the case study of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement established by Nigerian women for the rescue of Nigerian schoolgirls abducted in 2014 by violent extremist group Boko Haram, the book argues that BBOG is one of several emerging forms of transnational resistance in Africa that are breaking old moulds and forging new directions for social movements globally. The book argues that current research on social movements focuses too much on professional advocacy by formal civil society organisations and networks in the Global North. In doing so, it misses the increasingly spontaneous, mass-based protests initiated and led by Global South actors grounded in Global South contexts. Unpacking the workings of the BBOG movement, both internationally and regarding on-the-ground daily struggles in Nigeria, the book highlights their considerable implications for the practice and study of international politics.

This book is an important read for researchers of international relations, decolonisation, social movements, and transnational human rights activism. Activists and leaders of social movements will also find the policy implications highlighted by the book useful.

This book explores the significance of Ibn Khaldun's magnum opus, the Book of Examples, to our understanding of human history and the disciplines of anthropology, history, and sociology.

Operating outside of the confines of the Western intellectual tradition, Ibn Khaldun's the Book of Examples is perhaps the first attempt to propose a global history of humanity. In doing so, Ibn Khaldun pioneered approaches from what we today term sociology, anthropology, ecology, economics, geography, and urban studies. Drawing upon the Muqaddima and the other volumes of the Kitab al-Ibar, Cheddadi proposes novel ways of viewing human history and classifying societies. While Ibn Khaldun's attempts to develop a true global history were ultimately flawed, Cheddadi argues that they nevertheless offer pertinent lessons for our attempts to write a global history and to understand the world today.

This stimulating and original work on a seminal figure in Islamic sociology and historiography will be of interest to students and researchers across the humanities and social sciences.
