Economic and organizational literature has long separated the figure of the capitalist and the manager, but it often continues to assimilate that of the capitalist and the entrepreneur around the notion of risk-bearing. Yet confusion between the two prevents any understanding of the essence of capitalism and delivers an erroneous and negative image of the private corporation.

Taking care to distinguish individuals and functions, creators and beneficiaries of revenues, this book examines the respective places of both entrepreneurs and capitalists within the organization. It considers where these roles come into partnership and conflict, demonstrating the circumstances in which entrepreneur and capitalist interests can diverge. It also explores under what circumstances corporate capitalists can impede the efficiency of market mechanisms and shows that in certain kinds of organizations, managers can be the real entrepreneurs. We also explore the consequences on the institutional environment of the relations between entrepreneurs, capitalists and managers within the organization and propose an original approach to the theme of the destructive entrepreneur.

In this revised edition of Savages and Beasts, Nigel Rothfels traces the origins of the modern zoo to the efforts of the German entrepreneur Carl Hagenbeck, the most successful dealer in exotic animals in the nineteenth century. Building from his core business in animals, Hagenbeck eventually became even more famous for his large ethnographic exhibitions and circus ventures.

When Hagenbeck opened his Animal Park near Hamburg, Germany, in 1907, he brought together all his business interests in a revolutionary zoological park. He moved wild animals out of their cages and into "natural landscapes" and, in the process, invented a new way of imagining captivity. Through the use of theatrical scenery, the animals and people performing in his ethnographic exhibitions appeared to be living in their native lands. This revised edition addresses ethical concerns about the representation of indigenous peoples and animals and includes a host of new images and photographs.

By examining Hagenbeck's enterprises, Savages and Beasts demonstrates how ideas about the role of zoos and the nature of animal captivity developed in the late nineteenth century. Antonfrancesco Grazzini's plays, La Spiritata (The Possessed Girl) and La Strega (The Witch), are available in English for the first time, with notes and an "Introduction". These plays deal with witchcraft, superstition, sexuality, and abortion. The context for such themes is analyzed in the "Introduction". Grazzini enhanced literary drama with elements from popular performances. He influenced other playwrights, including in England, where The Possessed Girl was adapted as the Elizabethan comedy, The Bugbears. Writer and linguist John Florio used Grazzini's plays in his lexicon of Italian for English learners. Grazzini celebrated artistic and popular traditions of Renaissance Florence; he is significant for writing and preserving many literary genres, especially the burlesque and carnivalesque. He participated in Florentine spectacle and theater, as a writer of plays, a composer of interludes, and a chronicler of festive events. His importance to the development of the Italian language is evident in his plays.
