The volume offers a critical edition of a text by Richard FitzRalph, one of the most original 14th-century Oxonian thinkers. FitzRalph's philosophical and theological ideas were enthusiastically adopted or fiercely challenged, consolidating his recognition at the universities of Oxford, Paris, and Italy.
For all this, his work remains relatively little-known today, an obscurity this book redresses by making a question on the will from FitzRalph's Lectura in Sententias available to a larger readership. Besides, FitzRalph's strongly voluntaristic position and analytical techniques derived from the natural sciences and logic are shown to place him close to the Oxford Calculators.

When, in the 1970's, Sister Prudence Allen, RSM began to investigate philosophical thought on woman, the question was considered to be, at best, a marginal area for philosophical research. Rather, it was seen as a sociological, anthropological, psychological, or political issue. This book confirms that today, partly due to Allen's groundbreaking work, the complementarity of man and woman is an important and fruitful area of research in philosophy providing an evaluative framework that enriches and challenges many other disciplines. No one could have foreseen the centrality of her research for questions of gender theory that are, in the third decade of the 21st century, in the forefront of public attention.

In the present volume, leading authors in the area of sex/gender complementarity reflect upon and further develop various aspects of Allen's research. In 16 original, scholarly essays, some contributors build upon Allen's project of exploring "the concept of woman" throughout the history of philosophy. Others explore the work of 20th century philosophers, most of them Christian Personalists, whom Allen credits with significant influence on the development of integral gender complementarity, such as Karol Wojty?a/ John Paul II, Jacques Maritain, Edith Stein, Emmanuel Mounier, W. Norris Clarke, SJ, and Bernard Lonergan, SJ. Still other contributors consider Marian spirituality, analogies between Benedictine spirituality and the physiological realities of a woman's body during pregnancy, seminary education in the writings of Allen and others, and the impact of Allen's work on the real lives of women in families, the Church, and professional life.

Upon completing her magisterial, three-volume work, The Concept of Woman, Allen passed the baton to a new generation of scholars, stating, "The next phases will be developed by those who themselves take the argument further and deeper in their own research, writing, living, and lecturing." The present volume takes up the baton, carrying Allen's work forward and paying tribute to the lifetime achievement of a great scholar.

Lord Acton said that of all the works written against Martin Luther in the beginning of the Reformation, Bishop John Fisher of Rochester's Assertionis Lutheranae Confutatio of 1523 was the most important. Oddly enough this massive work of Catholic apologetics, composed in Latin, has never been rendered into the English language. It contains Fisher's detailed responses to all forty-one articles defended by Martin Luther against the censures of Pope Leo X found in the bull Exsurge Domine (1520).

In this volume Thomas Scheck presents for the first time in English translation, introduced, and annotated, Fisher's Preface to the Reader, Ten Truths, and the most important single article found in Fisher's Confutation, namely his Confutation of Luther's Assertion of Article 36, in which Fisher defends the existence of free will against Luther's claim that free will is a fiction with no reality. Fisher's reply is thoroughly grounded in Scripture and in the interpretation of Scripture found in the ancient Fathers of the Church. Interestingly to defend free will he makes abundant use of Augustine, Origen, Jerome, Tertullian and John Chrysostom.

Luther's controversy with the Catholic Church over free will is well known today from his debate with Erasmus of Rotterdam, which is easily accessible in English. Less well known is the fact that Bishop John Fisher's reply to Luther preceded Erasmus's by one year and was used extensively by Erasmus himself in arguing against Luther's positions. Also noteworthy is that Bishop John Fisher's particular response to Luther was well known to the bishops and theologians at the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and appears to have influenced the formulation of Catholic dogma in the Decree on Justification, where free will is affirmed and the power of human resistance recognized.

Bishop John Fisher was canonized along with St. Thomas More in 1935, 400 years after their bloody martyrdoms under King Henry VIII. Their mutual feast day is on June 22.

Anthony of Padua: Franciscan, Preacher, Teacher, Saint represents the culmination of a lifetime of scholarly work by Valentin Strappazzon (d. 2023) on Anthony of Padua and especially on his sermons and spirituality. About 20 years prior to this volume, he had penned a short overview of his life in the popular ""Petites Vies"" series in the French language. A few years before the publication of the book in question, he edited and published three significant volumes on the sermons of the saint.

Although the present volume has been written in a less rigorous and erudite manner, it is intended to be a solid historical and analytical treatment for a wider reading public interested in the life and preaching this fascinating medieval friar. Particular attention is given to explaining how and why Anthony, once he became a Franciscan living in France and Italy, became the focus of intense waves of popular devotion to whom numerous miracles and wonders came to be attributed both in the Middle Ages and even in our own time. Being the penultimate work of this author, written in French and lucidly translated by Michael F. Cusato, Anthony of Padua is a work of intelligence and reflection on a medieval figure who has too often only been the subject of piety rather than an assessment of the towering spiritual person that he was.

The Second Vatican Council urged Eastern Catholics to cultivate their share of divine revelation for the benefit of the entire Catholic Church. Yet, more than 50 years later, the Eastern Catholic Churches frequently remain on the margins, both in the theological academy and in the life of the Church more broadly. In an effort to remedy this situation, at least in part, this volume offers a scholarly reflection on the unique patrimony of the Eastern Catholic Churches, divided according to the categories of Liturgy, Theology, Spirituality, Discipline, and Culture. In so doing, it both follows the categories used to define a Church sui iuris in the Code of Canon Law for the Eastern Churches, and builds on the legacy of the Rev. Peter Galadza, to whom the volume is dedicated.

On one hand, the volume and its essays are intentionally introductory, revealing the worlds of Eastern Catholicism and the variety of theological approaches that take place there. At the same time, however, several of the essays in this volume relate the history and current reality of Eastern Catholicism to the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, yet without ignoring how frequently Eastern Catholics live, worship, and theologize without self-conscious regard for their unique ecclesial situation. Indeed, these authors show, Eastern Catholic theology can be unself-consciously grounded in the patristic tradition, and Eastern Catholics can simply "do" theology, without worrying about ecclesial politics. Readers will thus find here the best of both worlds: both an introduction to the unique and frequently ignored patrimony of the Eastern Catholic Churches, and a series of essays that avoids the all-to-common pitfall of reducing these traditions to a parody of other Churches, Eastern or Western. Instead, by engaging with the sources of the Christian tradition - as Eastern Catholics, yes, but first and foremost as Christians - the authors reveal how much their tradition can offer the Catholic Church as a whole.

The aim of this groundbreaking volume is to "enrich and intensify the theological dimension of the Jewish-Catholic dialogue" called for by the 2015 Vatican document, The Gifts and the Calling of God are Irrevocable by building a bridge between Catholic systematic theology and Catholic- Jewish dialogue. The collection includes 19 essays that facilitate a rigorous exchange between Jewish scholars and Catholic theologians on some of the most difficult questions in Jewish-Christian dialogue. The scholars discuss the relation of the election of Israel to the universality of salvation in Christ, the nature and extent of the Church's mission, the affirmation that God's covenant with the Jewish people has never been revoked, and whether the land of Israel is an aspect of that covenant. The Catholic thinkers included in this volume address these topics with attention to the sources and foundational voices of Catholic theology including St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. Indeed, this important new work is the first volume to address Aquinas on the law in the context of the Jewish-Christian encounter. The Catholic authors follow what might be called the Ratzingerian line of post-conciliar Catholic theological reflection on Jews and Judaism. With some important exceptions, this line has generally lacked exponents in English-speaking theology. The essays raise the question of what theological dialogue is, and how it relates to interreligious dialogue and Catholic systematic theological reflection. Yet difficulties emerge immediately. What is the relationship between internal Catholic theological reflection on Israel and Church and the external interreligious dialogue with rabbinic Judaism and the Jewish people? The volume demonstrates how, in theological dialogue, it becomes clear just how much separates the two traditions despite sharing concepts and the language of Scripture. The essays demonstrate how the challenge of Catholic-Jewish theological dialogue is, in part, keeping open the space for dialogue without minimizing or playing down differences. As Pope Benedict XVI observed, "to be sincere, the existing differences must not be kept silent or minimized: even in things that, due to our intimate conviction of faith, make us different from one another; in fact, precisely in these things, we must respect each other." This volume is needed for any Catholic theological library, and especially those interested in the contemporary Jewish-Christian encounter.

Cantate Domino is a five-volume commentary on the texts of the newly translated hymns of the Liturgy of the Hours. The hymns which recently appeared for the first time as a single corpus of English texts, will be included in the forthcoming USCCB revised edition of the Liturgy of the Hours. The hymns are drawn from among the very finest authors of the first millennium: Ambrose, Prudentius, and Gregory the Great together with later authors such as Thomas Aquinas, Leo XIII, and twentieth century authors who composed new hymns to be used in the psalter and celebration of the saints in the present Universal Calendar. The commentary concentrates on the Latin texts of the Liturgia Horarum, elucidated by the recently approved International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) translations. Commentaries have been prepared by a team of international scholars who bring both the depth of their knowledge together with the insights of those who have prepared liturgical texts in English during the sixty years of ICEL's existence. Previously unpublished material from ICEL's archives, including documents of the Consilium, which prepared the Latin texts for the liturgical books promulgated after the Second Vatican Council, will appear alongside commentaries which identify and explain biblical, classical, and liturgical allusions in the liturgical texts in a way that is of service to clergy, religious, liturgists, and students of the liturgy as well as the non-specialist reader, and all who seek to pray the Prayer of the Church with greater understanding.

Over the past two decades the scholarly conversation has shifted from the practically consensus view that John has little to offer in terms of ethical content to a more robust understanding of how Johannine literature engages ethical questions. This process recently reached a milestone with the publication of two seminal tomes on Johannine ethics by Jan van der Watt. Based on the Radboud Prestige Lectures he delivered on this topic, the present volume evaluates van der Watt's approach by submitting it to critical evaluation by leading specialists in the field, and explores future prospects for the study of Johannine ethics.

The "Suffering Servant" text of Isaiah 53 is a perennial topic of debate within Jewish and Christian biblical theology. Is the Suffering Servant an individual, a group, or both? How and why did he suffer? What role did God play in his suffering? How is his suffering related to human salvation? The answers to these questions often divide Jewish and Christian readers of Scripture as well as Christians across different denominations. In particular, Isaiah 53 tends to inform different Christian accounts of the origin, nature, and saving value of Christ's Passion.

The Suffering Servant in Aquinas contributes to the debate on the meaning of Isaiah 53 and its bearing upon the Passion of Christ by examining how St. Thomas Aquinas engaged this biblical text. This book examines every explicit reference to Isaiah 53 that Aquinas makes in his biblical commentaries, Commentary on the Sentences, Summa Theologiae, and Opuscula. It analyzes how and why Aquinas interprets Isaiah 53 in the ways that he does. It focuses especially upon how Aquinas draws upon Isaiah 53 to shed light on the saving mystery of Christ's Passion. Readers will see how Aquinas articulates the relationship between God's will and Christ's suffering, the diverse forms of Christ's pain, the degree to which the Passion can be considered a "punishment," and the saving functions of the Passion as example, merit, satisfaction, and sacrifice.

This book makes an original contribution to the growing field of Biblical Thomism. It examines Aquinas's exegetical methods as well as the role of Scripture within his speculative theology. And it properly contextualizes Aquinas's exegesis by considering the differences between his Latin version of Isaiah 53 and contemporary renderings of Hebrew and Greek versions. Readers will see that Aquinas's Christological interpretations of Isaiah 53 are both exegetically intriguing and theologically rich.

The Beauty of Belief sheds new light on Lutheran relationships with ecclesiastical decoration in southwest Germany following the Duchy of Wuerttemberg's Reformation in 1534. Based on extensive original archival research and engagement with surviving images and objects, Roisin Watson compellingly demonstrates how Lutherans moved away from initial acts of iconoclasm and towards embracing the possibilities of the religious image in their devotional routines. She explores the interactions of Wuerttemberg rulers, pastors, and congregations with their ecclesiastical spaces across the political upheavals of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In doing so, this book tells not only the story of the visual culture of the Reformation, but an account of Wuerttemberg's Reformation itself.

What are the aims of the Christian spiritual life and how can we deepen our life in Christ? What is the Catholic form of the spiritual life and what are its causes? This book serves as an introduction to Catholic spirituality by examining the mystery of Jesus Christ- His Crucifixion and His Resurrection- as the center of our spiritual life. The central argument of the book is that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus present us with the form or essence of the Christian spiritual life and orient us toward union with the Trinity as the final end or aim of human existence. The means of union with God through sacraments, the interior life of the theological virtues (faith, hope, and charity), and the virtue of religion are considered as vehicles by which we rejoin God in Christ. The effects of the Cross are considered in our life by a study of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. The Virgin Mary is considered as a model of the spiritual life. What results is a Christ-centered spirituality that is sacramental and Marian, and that depicts the life of the Church living in contemplative charity as the basic expression of Catholic spirituality.

This book presents Saint Bonaventure as a cutting-edge thinker who engaged with natural philosophy on its own terms. His final academic project was an unfinished collection of scholastic sermons titled Collationes in Hexaemeron. At this moment in history, academics were clashing over the limits of cognition and the definition of science (scientia). Much has been written detailing how the incorporation of Aristotle's philosophy into university curricula eventually prompted the Condemnations of 1270 and 1277. But perhaps it is incorrect to conceive of these events in a frame of escalating tensions leading to collapse. Perhaps a new perspective can be found by venturing back to 1273, to see Aristotle through the eyes of a theologian who was both magister and minister, bishop and brother-one who respected the academy's rigor but also challenged its tendency toward self-absorption.

Guiding readers through vision one of Collationes in Hexaemeron, Benjamin Winter argues that Bonaventure's rejection of certain philosophical errors ought to be understood within the context of the virtuous person's journey to wisdom. Propositions such as the eternity of the world, the unicity of the intellect, and fated necessity are not variables in a zero-sum equation "balanced out" by truths of faith. Instead, Bonaventure sees these propositions as opportunities to reflect charitably on nature and grace, emphasizing that just as knowledge is empty without love, understanding is insufficient without humility. Rather than renounce Aristotle or stifle scientific inquiry, Collationes in Hexaemeron wholeheartedly acknowledges the affective and communal dimensions of philosophical knowledge. Bonaventure creates a magnificent and enduring text with powerful applications today.

No late ancient philosopher has written more extensively on part-whole relations than the Neoplatonic commentator Proclus. In Proclus on Whole and Part, Arthur Oosthout unfolds, for the first time, Proclus' detailed and systematic analysis of (Neo-)Platonic mereology in full. Oosthout weaves together a great number of previously disconnected scholarly inquiries into Proclus, while adding many critical notes and new insights of his own. He bases this new synthesis on a detailed theoretical framework built not only on the metaphysical theories of Plato and Aristotle, but also on the arguments of prominent scholars of modern mereology.

What did the Corinthians think that Paul meant when he urged the them to imitate him as he imitates Christ? Exploring 1 Corinthians, Romans, 1 Clement, and early Christian texts, it is likely that the Corinthians knew more of Jesus's teachings and lifestyle. Using the fruit of collective memory studies, this study approximates a collective memory about Jesus. It then compares this approximated memory with the surrounding context of 1 Cor 4:16 and 11:1 finding much agreement.

Economic and organizational literature has long separated the figure of the capitalist and the manager, but it often continues to assimilate that of the capitalist and the entrepreneur around the notion of risk-bearing. Yet confusion between the two prevents any understanding of the essence of capitalism and delivers an erroneous and negative image of the private corporation.

Taking care to distinguish individuals and functions, creators and beneficiaries of revenues, this book examines the respective places of both entrepreneurs and capitalists within the organization. It considers where these roles come into partnership and conflict, demonstrating the circumstances in which entrepreneur and capitalist interests can diverge. It also explores under what circumstances corporate capitalists can impede the efficiency of market mechanisms and shows that in certain kinds of organizations, managers can be the real entrepreneurs. We also explore the consequences on the institutional environment of the relations between entrepreneurs, capitalists and managers within the organization and propose an original approach to the theme of the destructive entrepreneur.

The book will be of great interest to readers of economic organization, corporate governance and entrepreneurship.

Dante's Visions: Crossing Sights on Natural Philosophy, Theory of Vision, and Medicine in the Divine Comedy and Beyond offers a fascinating insight into Dante's engagement with the science of his time, particularly with visual perception and neurological disorders. The relationship between the soul and the body and the bond between human beings and their natural environment were significant areas of interest in the medieval world. In Dante's Divine Comedy, as well as in his Vita Nuova and Convivio, these connections are enhanced to the fullest, expressing feelings and sensations, pain and ecstasy, and physical and spiritual passions under exceptional psychological and environmental stimuli.

Based on the research of a multidisciplinary group of scholars - including experts in Dante, the culture and history of medieval literature and philosophy, historians of science, neuroscientists, and specialists in vision and visual illusions - this book explores the poet's psychophysical descriptions of sense perception, the theory of vision, optical illusions and deceptions of sight, neurological phenomena, and the anatomy and physiology of the human nervous system. It highlights the Aristotelian sources of his scientific culture and the influence of the Arabic sciences on their dissemination in the Western world.

In addition to illustrating the cultural background of a poetic genius, with specific reference to the rich scientific reflections in Italy at Dante's time, this book brings out the many opportunities for future research at the intersection of science and literature in the past.

Now completely revised! A history of the modern zoo.

In this revised edition of Savages and Beasts, Nigel Rothfels traces the origins of the modern zoo to the efforts of the German entrepreneur Carl Hagenbeck, the most successful dealer in exotic animals in the nineteenth century. Building from his core business in animals, Hagenbeck eventually became even more famous for his large ethnographic exhibitions and circus ventures.

When Hagenbeck opened his Animal Park near Hamburg, Germany, in 1907, he brought together all his business interests in a revolutionary zoological park. He moved wild animals out of their cages and into "natural landscapes" and, in the process, invented a new way of imagining captivity. Through the use of theatrical scenery, the animals and people performing in his ethnographic exhibitions appeared to be living in their native lands. This revised edition addresses ethical concerns about the representation of indigenous peoples and animals and includes a host of new images and photographs.

By examining Hagenbeck's enterprises, Savages and Beasts demonstrates how ideas about the role of zoos and the nature of animal captivity developed in the late nineteenth century. Rothfels provides a much-needed historical perspective on the connections between the development of modern zoos and their colonial histories.

A fascinating and moving biography of Colin Anson, the German refugee who became an elite British commando

Born in Germany in 1922, Colin Anson's (Claus Ascher) childhood was marked by the trials of Nazism. His father was arrested by the Gestapo in 1937 and transported to Dachau, where he died shortly after. Colin, aged just seventeen, escaped to Britain in the Kindertransport. As soon as he was old enough, Colin volunteered in the Pioneer Corps. Then, in 1942, he was recruited for the elite commando unit X-Troop.

Colin took part in the invasions of Sicily and Italy in 1943, where he sustained a near-fatal injury. But just months later, he returned to duty. He fought in the Yugoslav islands, became the first Allied soldier to liberate Corfu, and was stationed in postwar Frankfurt.

In this unique biography, Helen Fry traces the remarkable story of Colin's life. Drawing on extensive interviews, Fry recounts his actions in X-Troop and beyond in his own words-and sheds new light on the experience of refugees in the British forces.

The acquisition of table manners and rhetorical skills, the interaction between medicine and eating, and the presence of food in literature and religion shaped Peninsular societies and connected them to a Western European background during the Middle Ages. The Renaissance, however, marked a turning point in world history, and the reader will learn how eating evolved in the kingdoms of Spain and Portugal during the early Renaissance in fields such as morals, politics, medicine, literature and religion. The book also explains how the cultural conception of food was exported by Iberian explorers to the Americas and Japan.

The present volume focuses on a two-fold issue: food as a cultural element that united Mediterranean European society, and food as a cultural encounter between European explorers and new worlds during the early Renaissance. Therefore, this volume continues the themes introduced in the previous monograph, Food, Feasting and Table Manners in the Late Middle Ages: Volume I: The Iberian Peninsula in the European Context, but takes into account the new, global scale of the era.

Readers will find here a panorama of what, and how, people ate in Mediterranean Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and learn how cultural aspects of food were exported to the new lands that were explored during the Age of Discovery.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, many individuals were motivated by their religious creeds to give. As religious faith began to wane in the period, others were inspired by humanitarian commitments or moral (but not necessarily scriptural) zeal. The contents of this volume introduce readers to the many individuals who distinguished themselves through charity and philanthropy, including Angela Burdett-Coutts, Florence Nightingale, Grace Kimmins, the Earl of Shaftesbury, and the American George Peabody, and the causes they took up.

This book brings together a trail blazing collection of music scholars to explore the intersections, frictions, and resonances between nineteenth-century American music and history.

In the nineteenth-century United States, music was everywhere: from places of worship to the workplace, the parlor, the stage, and the street. Music accompanied paths of reform, supported both radical and conservative agendas, and helped Americans of all kinds to express patriotism, identity and resistance. The chapters in this volume unsettle longstanding assumptions about the types of music that were important to nineteenth-century Americans, where that music was performed, why, and for whom. And they underline the ability of music and musical practices to shed new light on questions of race, class, gender, and memorialization in the United States across the long nineteenth century. The volume offers insights for how and why to integrate nineteenth-century American music into history classrooms and highlights the need to embrace the challenge of interdisciplinary work to realize its greatest benefits.

This book will be relevant for students and researchers of American music history, cultural studies, and interdisciplinary historical analysis. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of American Nineteenth Century History.

Antonfrancesco Grazzini's plays, La Spiritata (The Possessed Girl) and La Strega (The Witch), are available in English for the first time, with notes and an "Introduction". These plays deal with witchcraft, superstition, sexuality, and abortion. The context for such themes is analyzed in the "Introduction". Grazzini enhanced literary drama with elements from popular performances. He influenced other playwrights, including in England, where The Possessed Girl was adapted as the Elizabethan comedy, The Bugbears. Writer and linguist John Florio used Grazzini's plays in his lexicon of Italian for English learners. Grazzini celebrated artistic and popular traditions of Renaissance Florence; he is significant for writing and preserving many literary genres, especially the burlesque and carnivalesque. He participated in Florentine spectacle and theater, as a writer of plays, a composer of interludes, and a chronicler of festive events. His importance to the development of the Italian language is evident in his plays.

The life experiences of men and women take on meaning through the emotionality they entail, and the intensity of these experiences build certain memories which link the individuals within a society. As such, this volume argues that examining the management of emotions in late medieval society will allow us to better understand it. By discussing theoretical frameworks for the historical study of emotions and presenting a range of case studies from the Middle Ages, the authors of this book illustrate how the management of emotions reflects and sheds light on the code of values and behaviour that guided this society.
