From newsletters and magazines to bazaars and dinners to festivals and concerts, charities and philanthropic enterprises competed among one another to obtain financial support for their causes, justify their expenditures and, to borrow a phrase from a recent historical study, "monetize compassion." Richly illustrated, this volume documents the business of charity and philanthropy.

The third edition of Consumerism in World History explores the nature of consumerism and its evolution, with particular emphasis on the modern "consumer revolution" and its global scope.

The book deals with crucial interpretive issues, such as whether consumerism is a natural human expression or involves other causes, the relationship between consumer apparatus (such as shops and advertising) and human needs, and the interplay between Western and other regional forms of consumerism. It covers major historical moments and changes, including the consumer revolution in Western society beginning in the 17th century and regional cultural patterns from the 19th century onward. This is a substantially revised edition, with updated suggested readings, rewritten sections on premodern consumerism in agricultural societies, and globalization and consumerism, and expanded coverage of major regions like India and Latin America.

This volume is essential reading for all students of world history and will be of great value to those in business history and environmental history.

A fascinating and highly original history of medieval magic told through twenty key illuminated manuscripts

Medieval Europe was preoccupied with magic. From the Carolingian Empire to Renaissance Italy and Tudor England, great rulers, religious figures, and scholars sought to harness supernatural power. They tried to summon spirits, predict the future, and even prolong life. Alongside science and religion, magic lay at the very heart of culture.

In this beautifully illustrated account, Anne Lawrence-Mathers explores the medieval fascination with magic through twenty extraordinary illuminated manuscripts. These books were highly sought after, commissioned by kings and stored in great libraries. They include an astronomical compendium made for Charlemagne's son; The Sworn Book of Honorius, used by a secret society of trained magicians; and the highly influential Picatrix. This vivid new history shows how attitudes to magic and science changed over the medieval period-and produced great works of art as they did so.

In The Age of the Borderlands, acclaimed historian Andrew C. Isenberg offers a new history of manifest destiny that breaks from triumphalist narratives of US territorial expansion. Isenberg takes readers to the contested borders of Spanish Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, California, Texas, and Minnesota at critical moments in the early to mid-nineteenth century, demonstrating that the architects of American expansion faced significant challenges from the diverse groups of people inhabiting each region. In other words, while the manifest destiny paradigm begins with an assumption of US strength, the government and the agents it dispatched to settle and control the frontier had only a weak presence.

Tracing the interconnected histories of Indians, slaves, antislavery reformers, missionaries, federal agents, and physicians, Isenberg shows that the United States was repeatedly forced to accommodate the presence of other colonial empires and powerful Indigenous societies. Anti-expansionists in the borderlands welcomed the precarity of the government's power: The land on which they dwelled was a grand laboratory where they could experiment with their alternative visions for American society. Examining the borderlands offers an understanding not just about frontier spaces but about the nature of the early American state- ambitiously expansionist but challenged by its native and imperial competitors.

This book brings together a trail blazing collection of music scholars to explore the intersections, frictions, and resonances between nineteenth-century American music and history.

In the nineteenth-century United States, music was everywhere: from places of worship to the workplace, the parlor, the stage, and the street. Music accompanied paths of reform, supported both radical and conservative agendas, and helped Americans of all kinds to express patriotism, identity and resistance. The chapters in this volume unsettle longstanding assumptions about the types of music that were important to nineteenth-century Americans, where that music was performed, why, and for whom. And they underline the ability of music and musical practices to shed new light on questions of race, class, gender, and memorialization in the United States across the long nineteenth century. The volume offers insights for how and why to integrate nineteenth-century American music into history classrooms and highlights the need to embrace the challenge of interdisciplinary work to realize its greatest benefits.

This book will be relevant for students and researchers of American music history, cultural studies, and interdisciplinary historical analysis. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of American Nineteenth Century History.

Grinding, bloody, and ultimately decisive, the Petersburg Campaign was the Civil War's longest and among its most complex. A Campaign of Giants: The Battle for Petersburg offers a gripping, comprehensive history of the decisive campaign in the eastern theater. In this second of three volumes, A. Wilson Greene narrates the critical months from August through October 1864, during which Ulysses S. Grant's army group launched three major offensives against Robert E. Lee's defenses around Petersburg and the Confederate capital in Richmond. The Confederates counterpunched after each Union advance and conducted a spectacular cavalry raid that netted almost 2,500 cattle from Federal grazing grounds. But as winter approached, Grant had captured one of Lee's primary supply routes and extended the lines around Petersburg and Richmond to some thirty-five miles.

Supported by thirty-four detailed maps, Greene's narrative chronicles these bloody engagements using many previously unpublished primary accounts from common soldiers and ranking officers alike. The struggle for Petersburg is often characterized as a siege, but Greene's narrative demonstrates that it was dynamic, involving maneuver and combat equal in intensity to that of any major Civil War operation.

Are there shadows in medieval art? Studies on the role of shadows in art history have either glanced over or ignored the medieval period, yet people of the Middle Ages certainly saw and thought about shadows and recorded their ideas about these phenomena in texts and images.
This book examines references to shadows in science, religion, and folklore of the Middle Ages. Through the lens of fifteenth-century manuscript painting, it investigates visual, metaphorical, and supernatural shadows in art to discover what shadows meant to the medieval viewer.

This book brings the thought of John Henry Newman into conversation with that of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI on a number of crucial theological themes. The book begins with a programmatic essay by Tracey Rowland connecting Newman's approach with that of Ratzinger's doktorvater Gottlieb Soehngen, along seven instructive paths. The book then delves into central themes of both Newman's and Ratzinger's thought, with essays that treat dogmatic development, the relationship of faith and reason, biblical inspiration, mystery, conscience, attentiveness to the "signs of the times," interculturality and revelation, the Church as the Mystical Body, ecclesial authority, the relationship of faith and natural science, and deification. The essays in the volume come from many of the world's leading Newman and Ratzinger scholars, with Ratzinger being represented by such experts as Rowland, Emery de Gaal, Aaron Pidel, SJ, Jacob Phillips, Matthew Ramage, and Jeremy Pilch; and Newman by such experts as Frederick D. Aquino, Andrew Meszaros, Marial Corona, Ryan Marr, and Elizabeth A. Huddleston. The Introduction briefly sets the scene for the encounter by describing the German reception of Newman during Ratzinger's youth in comparison with the much less robust situation in German Newman scholarship today. It is the hope of the editors that this theological encounter will serve to promote and advance both Newman studies and Ratzinger studies in English- and German-speaking lands today.

Now completely revised! A history of the modern zoo.

In this revised edition of Savages and Beasts, Nigel Rothfels traces the origins of the modern zoo to the efforts of the German entrepreneur Carl Hagenbeck, the most successful dealer in exotic animals in the nineteenth century. Building from his core business in animals, Hagenbeck eventually became even more famous for his large ethnographic exhibitions and circus ventures.

When Hagenbeck opened his Animal Park near Hamburg, Germany, in 1907, he brought together all his business interests in a revolutionary zoological park. He moved wild animals out of their cages and into "natural landscapes" and, in the process, invented a new way of imagining captivity. Through the use of theatrical scenery, the animals and people performing in his ethnographic exhibitions appeared to be living in their native lands. This revised edition addresses ethical concerns about the representation of indigenous peoples and animals and includes a host of new images and photographs.

By examining Hagenbeck's enterprises, Savages and Beasts demonstrates how ideas about the role of zoos and the nature of animal captivity developed in the late nineteenth century. Rothfels provides a much-needed historical perspective on the connections between the development of modern zoos and their colonial histories.

This Pauly Supplement volume does not treat military history purely as the history of war, but understands it in the context of all societal, political, economic, technological, cultural and religious phenomena related to the army and warfare in the Greco-Roman world. It also pays due attention both to the history of scholarship and to the specific types of sources.
Across its 190 or so entries written by leading scholars, the volume investigates general contexts of ancient military history as well as many specific issues: the strategies, systems, dimensions and weaponry of ancient warfare; significant historical events (including wars and military reforms); key individual figures (generals, politicians), and fundamental topics in the history of warfare (philosophical and legal discussions regarding the justness of war, military law, religion, administration).
The reception of ancient military history since Antiquity is also considered, along with representations in ancient and post-ancient literature and art. Comprehensive indices also facilitate the investigation of even the most recondite topics. This volume thus stands out from other works on ancient military history in terms of its structure, its scholarly approach and the range of its content.

This book focuses on Volga Bulgaria (10th to early 13th centuries), the only Muslim state in Eastern Europe before 1300. For several centuries, it operated as a bridge between the Christian West and the Muslim East. As such, it is widely believed that the colossal transit of oriental silver coin through the state was the foundation of the Bulgar economy while Islam consolidated statehood in the Middle Volga region.

Drawing on the rich archaeological record, Konstantin Rudenko argues against this view, demonstrating that the Bulgar culture was instead formed on the basis of its own resources. The Bulgars thus represent a unique example of relatively rapid change from nomadism to sedentism and urbanization, with no significant influence from neighboring, developed states. Cultural syncretism therefore emerged as a key characteristic of Volga Bulgaria.

This sourcebook serves both as an introduction and a wide-ranging reference work for human attitudes to nonhuman animals in Latin Europe during the Middle Ages. Under twelve headings, it includes numerous translated passages from Latin and vernacular texts that reflect human conceptions and uses of other animals during the period 300-1520. Theologians, philosophers, encyclopaedists, bestiarists, hagiographers, chroniclers, huntsmen and writers of agricultural manuals, cookbooks and plague treatises all had something to say about the place of nonhuman animals in their world and their interaction with humans, or simply recorded incidentally what they did in their writings. All are represented here.

The life experiences of men and women take on meaning through the emotionality they entail, and the intensity of these experiences build certain memories which link the individuals within a society. As such, this volume argues that examining the management of emotions in late medieval society will allow us to better understand it. By discussing theoretical frameworks for the historical study of emotions and presenting a range of case studies from the Middle Ages, the authors of this book illustrate how the management of emotions reflects and sheds light on the code of values and behaviour that guided this society.

The relationship between rulers and their subjects is always channelled by emotion. This volume explores the specific tones this relationship took on in the Middle Ages, as well as their accordance with a concept of power based ultimately on agreement, an inclination to visualise emotions, a social pedagogy based on fear, and a religious ideology which placed humanity between divine order and divine wrath. It also examines the emotive models used to rule society and deal with conflicts. Together, the contributions in this book demonstrate how our understanding of late medieval society can be enhanced by recognising the emotional strategies present in the game of power and how they were used to build authority.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, many individuals were motivated by their religious creeds to give. As religious faith began to wane in the period, others were inspired by humanitarian commitments or moral (but not necessarily scriptural) zeal. The contents of this volume introduce readers to the many individuals who distinguished themselves through charity and philanthropy, including Angela Burdett-Coutts, Florence Nightingale, Grace Kimmins, the Earl of Shaftesbury, and the American George Peabody, and the causes they took up.

This introduction to British literature from 1900 to 2021 looks at British writing from the perspective of the 2016 Brexit vote and its seismic repercussions. The book covers a wide variety of British literature in order to expose the cultural and political history of Britain, its repeated challenges and highly class-bound, patriarchal structure.

British Writing from Empire to Brexit: Writing, Identity, and Nation offers a stark view of what British culture has come to represent, and the repercussions. Not shying away from discussions around imperialism, nationalism, and racism, Robert Spencer, Howard J. Booth, and Anastasia Valassopoulos offer a radical deconstruction of what Britishness can, and should, mean, promoting a convincing and accessible way to rethink the texts and field. The authors analyse novels, poetry, and prose which amplify the dissentient and dissident perspectives of women, gender non-conforming, and queer authors, as well as the varied viewpoints and insights of working-class, immigrant, postcolonial, Black, and Asian writers, showing how these works open up post-national futures after empire and after Brexit.

Ultimately offering a model to rescue Britain from its current crises and anxieties, this book is an essential read for anyone approaching the study of British literature and culture, as well as those working on postcolonial studies, decolonisation, recent British history and politics, or with an interest in empire and Brexit.

Since 1994, over 4,000 human remains have been recovered from the Sonoran Desert. Victims of a border enforcement strategy that weaponizes the landscape against migrants, the ever-growing ledger of the dead counts the human cost at which the present political paradigm is secured. Through a series of readings of biblical texts, informed by philosophical, theological, and legal theory, this book facilitates a reckoning between the self-determining polity and the excluded outsider's ethical demand. Finding in their demand the motivation for novel forms of legal interpretation and political agency, Ellrod sketches a hopeful, life-affirming alternative to Realist Political Theologies of Migration.

A fascinating and moving biography of Colin Anson, the German refugee who became an elite British commando

Born in Germany in 1922, Colin Anson's (Claus Ascher) childhood was marked by the trials of Nazism. His father was arrested by the Gestapo in 1937 and transported to Dachau, where he died shortly after. Colin, aged just seventeen, escaped to Britain in the Kindertransport. As soon as he was old enough, Colin volunteered in the Pioneer Corps. Then, in 1942, he was recruited for the elite commando unit X-Troop.

Colin took part in the invasions of Sicily and Italy in 1943, where he sustained a near-fatal injury. But just months later, he returned to duty. He fought in the Yugoslav islands, became the first Allied soldier to liberate Corfu, and was stationed in postwar Frankfurt.

In this unique biography, Helen Fry traces the remarkable story of Colin's life. Drawing on extensive interviews, Fry recounts his actions in X-Troop and beyond in his own words-and sheds new light on the experience of refugees in the British forces.

Sigmund Freud's work has influenced the modern world in many profound ways. The "father of psychoanalysis," Freud wrote numerous works wherein his psychoanalytic perspectives were applied to history, society, religion, and other cultural phenomenon. By expanding his psychoanalytic theories into these realms, Freud insured his place within the disciplines of philosophy, sociology, history, theology, and religious studies, wherein his works are still studied. More specifically, his psychoanalytic theories were adopted, revised, and expanded upon by philosophers and sociologists, such as Theodor W. Adorno, Erich Fromm, Herbert Marcuse, Juergen Habermas, Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva, Gilles Deleuze, Judith Butler, Slavoj Zizek, and many others, who in some cases radicalized the latent political content within Freud's thought, using it to critique modern industrialized capitalism and theorize about the possibility for alternative forms of societies more conducive towards mental health. Although Freud is often marginalized, or even denigrated, we think there are still elements within the corpus of Freud's work that are valuable for both diagnosing social problems and addressing such problems psychoanalytically. The book demonstrates the lasting relevancy of Freud's thought to a variety of disciplines, as they diagnose a myriad of social issues.

What lies behind an island? Is an island just a piece of land surrounded by water? Or is it from a cultural, symbolic, and even geographical perspective much more than that? Considering the symbolic nature of islands as a longue duree and through the analysis of maps, texts, and historical accounts, this book explores how the depiction of insularity encodes specific meanings and analytical levels which shed light on medieval and modern worldviews.
