At a time when Yemen has been ravaged by a decade of war and subject to myriad political and military interventions, the essays in this collection serve as a timely reminder of the need for grounded anthropological study in even the harshest of circumstances. From tribesmen to refugees, revolutionaries to farmers, state workers to charity workers, intellectuals to the unemployed and the destitute, we learn of the everyday political languages through which people in the country live their lives. This volume is a call for an anthropology attuned not only to locally significant political concepts, but also to the ways in which people actively confront and reorient them while challenging their worlds and engaging the political imagination in a spirit of abiding critique. This concise collection is the fruit of decades of ethnographic fieldwork in Yemen and will be of interest to students and scholars seeking an intimate and nuanced account of life in the country.

≫The Politics of Antagonism: Dynamics of Authoritarian Realities in Assad's Syria≪: Based on Carl Schmitt's political theory, this thesis develops a qualitative analysis framework to capture authoritarian reality in Assad's Syria. Through a discourse analytical examination of the personalized understanding of sovereignty, the friend/enemy dialectic, and their intertwining with the institutionalization of a necropolitical regime of violence in Syria, the analysis confirms that Assad is the Leviathan of his self-created state of nature.

Jehovah's Witnesses began as an informal Bible study group in the 1870s that sought to recover first-century Christian beliefs and practices. They disseminated literature announcing the expected reign of God's Kingdom and called themselves Bible Students. In 1931, they adopted the name Jehovah's Witnesses, epitomizing their belief in the Christian obligation to preach the gospel worldwide. Known for their ethic of nonviolence and their evangelizing work, and despite worshipping freely in most countries, Witnesses are subject to controversy, particularly vis-a-vis mainstream Christianity, the State, and secularized societies. The authors are practicing Jehovah's Witnesses who present this work as neither apologia nor official account, but as an emic description of the history, beliefs, identity, and organizational structure of Witnesses, and their societal interactions. While briefly covering main controversies, this Element focuses on the culture and lived experience of the millions comprising the Witness community. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

This book explores the role of religion in discussions about climate change and, particularly, the development of responses to climate change on global, state, institutional, and local levels. It considers examples of the ways that different religious traditions, including Indigenous, Muslim, Buddhist, and Christian communities, have responded to the different effects of climate change by using different methodological approaches, including political science and international relations (e.g. public opinion polls and constructivism); religious studies scholarship on climate change, including an overview of religion and ecology as a subdiscipline in religious studies; and environmental humanities approaches.

This volume interrogates the diverse ways religion both acts and is acted upon by different actors, including institutions and nation states, in response to climate change. Within single traditions, different actors advocate for planetary care and concern, while their co-religionists may remain passive or deny climate change as a phenomenon.

This book unravels the complexities of how different religions approach climate change and recommends that religions are taken seriously in the development of climate change mitigation strategies at different scales.

This book offers a multidisciplinary analysis of the degradation process of an ecosystem, drawing upon the Mar Menor as a case study to highlight the damage human pressure causes to the environment.

All ecosystems change over time, although in some cases, this variation is more dynamic and evident. The Mar Menor is a clear example of this "ecological transition", as it is the largest coastal lagoon in the western Mediterranean and the first ecosystem in Europe to be granted legal personhood rights. This book provides an extensive overview of the history of its environmental degradation over the past 100 years, highlighting the subsequent succession of environmental crises including phytoplankton explosions, the disappearance of large areas of submerged meadows due to eutrophication, and episodes of mass mortality of aquatic fauna. Split into three sections to reflect thematic blocks, the book begins with a comprehensive description of the Mar Menor and its marine ecosystems, emphasizing its ecological value and unique space in Spain and Europe. It discusses intensive and globalized agriculture, surrounding agro-export, and the laws that legislate it. In the second part, the book draws on a series of cultural concepts, theoretical frameworks, and participatory arts-based research to enrich our understanding of the environment from multiple perspectives. Finally, in the third part, the book uses analysis gathered from the Mar Menor case study to discuss wider conclusions about the ways in which we can begin to undo our damage to the environment and restore ecosystems.

This book will be useful for students, academics, and researchers interested in environmental justice, environmental history and anthropology, sustainable development, and environmental studies more broadly.

Focusing on cities in the European Arctic, this book consolidates research on sustainable development, local and urban governance, and transnational cooperation in the region. It examines to what extent there is transnational cooperation between urban areas in remote locations and how it can be enhanced to better align with global sustainable development policies to successfully implement goals such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Climate Agreement. Based on field research in seven cities in the European Arctic, Rovaniemi, Kolari, Nuuk, Akureyri, Tromso, Kiruna, and Lulea, the authors explain why approaches to sustainable urban development differ between geographies, how policies relate to other local and global strategies, and to what degree the European Arctic is normative for remote regions at large. This book contributes to important conceptual debates on local governance and transnational cooperation by examining the benefits and potential issues of applying theoretical models of multi-actor engagement and participation in isolated populations. It argues that the participation of local actors in decision processes may encourage a better harmonisation of sustainable urban development approaches in the European Arctic and will have a greater impact at the global level if aligned transnationally. This book will be relevant to researchers, social scientists, policymakers, practitioners, and NGOs in the fields of global governance, sustainable development, sustainability research, and environmental studies.

This book critically analyses how diverse Parties and non-Party stakeholders (such as subnational governments, cities, states, foundations, NGOs, civil society, multilateral organizations, and the private sector) promote climate actions through linguistic and visual symbols across multiple platforms, unveiling the underlying ideologies within these discourses.

Chapters in this volume employ methods from critical discourse studies (CDS) to explore the interplay between the material realities of climate change and the discursive communication among various Parties and non-Party stakeholders through multimodal approaches across multiple platforms. They draw on discourses such as the UN speeches, UN documents, EU green deal policy, official documents submitted by African countries to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and news reports in China and Australia. The research presented utilizes and revisits diverse social and linguistic concepts to better inform the use of linguistic and/or visual symbols in different types of public discourse. This timely volume takes the field a step further by showing the importance of carrying out more international research to expand our knowledge of the global, regional, and local discourse and ideologies that shape what we come to know and understand as climate change and how it is to be addressed.

It will bring significant theoretical, methodological, and empirical insights into the relations between language use, discursive practice, and social practice. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critical Discourse Studies.

This book uses a declarative mapping methodology to examine a range of issues relating to environmental and social justice issues, including climate change, homelessness, refugees, food insecurity, and racial and gender inequality. The book explores how we can bring about change in order to have a meaningful impact on these problems, using a literature-based approach to identify and analyse this through the Declarative Mapping Method, showing how this methodology can be used in the context of these issues. The authors build a body of knowledge based upon published research, to offer a template that may be used to bring about meaningful and appropriate changes in human behaviour in a variety of social/ecological justice contexts. In a world where most of the global challenges we face are a result of human behaviour, the book applies psychological principles to gain a deeper understanding of our responses to world issues. Case studies are included to show how specific strategies can be used to address problems, and a holistic perspective offers strategies and insights into addressing these challenges. This is an ideal text for researchers and students interested in environmental and social issues, especially those looking to find ways to address them through research methodologies.

This book presents eleven contributions illustrating the main areas of research in French-speaking Europe in the field of environmental and sustainability education (ESE).

It argues that although research in the field of ESE is well established, it is not yet structured at a national level, whether in France, Belgium or Switzerland. The main issues addressed by the contributors are presented with a view to establishing a dialogue with the Anglophone community. Three avenues are identified: (i) exploring the place of ESE in education systems, in terms of a continuum of education, (ii) exploring the specificities of ESE teaching practices, and (iii) exploring teacher education and training practices. The contributions suggest a number of courses of action and prospects for encouraging debate between both researchers and language communities, ranging from collaboration and shared research programmes to a reworking of educational concepts and practices, and initial and continuing professional development, in relation to pressing pedagogical, social and environmental challenges.

This volume will be a key resource for educators, policymakers, scholars and advanced students of environmental and sustainability education and teacher education and training. It was originally published as a special issue of Environmental Education Research

From the deserts of northern Mexico to as far south as the Rio Plata in Argentina, this book traces the history of journalism in Latin America from its earliest roots and examines how it relates to the modern importance of media in the twenty-first century.

By exploring mestizo roots, The History of Journalism in Latin America examines Indigenous foundations, pre-colonial methods, and post-colonial systems of communication to show how earlier publications became instrumental to regional nineteenth-century independence movements throughout Latin America. Although the history of communication in the region is characterized by the control and censorship of empires, be they Indigenous or European, this study argues that modern journalism at its core is the story of crusading for freedom and independence. Through a country-by-country approach, this book explores key themes such as family media empires in Mexico, newspaper competition in Brazil, the dissemination of political agendas in Colombia's El Espectador, and conservative media outlets in Argentina and Chile. It demonstrates the varied roles of media: businesses, societal forces, and institutions of governmental change.

This volume is the perfect introduction to the history of journalism and media in Latin America for students.

This book explores one of the most pressing issues of our time: development, a concern that has persisted from the past century through to today, and is increasingly intertwined with challenges related to environmental sustainability and growing inequalities. Despite numerous academic and policy interventions, development remains an elusive goal. Hence, this book explains how conceptualisations alternative to economic growth, have evolved in Latin American geographical literature and shows their practical applications in various contexts.

The book argues for a broader, more inclusive approach to development - territorial development - that integrates ecological, cultural, economic and social concerns. By focusing on territorial development seen from a theoretical perspective but also applied through case studies, the book underscores the importance of understanding the historical and power dynamics that influence how territories are shaped, for whom, and by whom. The book is divided into two parts. The first part provides a theoretical and historical background on development and territory in Latin America, presenting critical methodological perspectives for aligning academic research with community and environmental wellbeing. The second part consists of case studies that illustrate how different understandings of territory influence development agendas in diverse settings across the region.

Scholars, researchers and post-graduate students will find this an invaluable resource, as will policymakers and organizations interested in developmental practices.

This book constitutes a first-of-its-kind synthesis of the development of journalism in Brazil, considering both its mediations with national social and political life and its relationships of influence and dependence on international economic centers.

The author suggests that Brazilian journalism has so far known four phases: doctrinal political journalism, narrative literary journalism, industrial news journalism, and multimedia infotainment journalism. Devoting a chapter to each phase, Daros presents a critical map of the genesis and metamorphosis of journalistic practices in the country. The analysis goes beyond a mere study of national history to mark the points of connection between the Brazilian case and other geographic spaces, showing how the profession moved between two Western paradigms and was continually shaped by the economic, political, and cultural context from which it emerged and was inserted. The final part of the book reflects critically on the state of Brazilian journalism today, considering the new social media culture, the increasing focus on costs over quality of news products, and the failed social responsibility of the profession to inform national public opinion.

This study is an important touchstone for researchers of Brazilian and Latin American journalism and those interested in the ways in which the media shapes and is shaped by a country's socio-political climate.

Providing one of the first accounts in English of the work of the founding scholars of comparative education in Latin America from the 19th and 20th centuries, this book presents a detailed analysis of their influence on the field and highlights the pivotal role played by each scholar in the development of comparative education in the Global South.

The book chiefly comprises biographical contributions about the achievements of significant Latin American scholars both in terms of critical historical-epistemological traditions and educational reforms that impacted the development of Latin American societies and education systems. Across 13 chapters, the book discusses travellers who contributed to the post-independence period of nation-building; progressive reformers inspired by the work of John Dewey; and finally, scholars who played a key role in the institutionalisation of the field of comparative education in the region. Novel in its focus, even considering publications in Spanish and Portuguese, the book ultimately appeals to the current interest in understanding comparative education and its history as a worldwide project.

Exploring the history of comparative education beyond the confines of established Anglo-European accounts, this volume will be of great interest to researchers and scholars in comparative and international education, history of education and Latin American studies.

The African National Congress (ANC) is the oldest and most durable of African nationalist movements, not only in South Africa but also across the continent. Since 1994, it has governed the country as leader of the Tripartite Alliance with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and South African Communist Party (SACP). The early decades of the twentieth century saw the establishment, survival, and growth of ANC and black labour organisations.

This book focuses on the formative period of engagement of these political and socioeconomic forces before permanent alliances emerged. It analyses the ANC's attitudes and relationships with the nascent formations of the black working class, with particular attention to the most conscious and active workers. The subject matter in this book also discusses migrant, rural, domestic, and women workers - not always then clearly defined as part of a formal 'working class'.

The anthropologist Jonah Lipton was in Freetown, Sierra Leone, when the largest Ebola outbreak in history hit. In the Time of Ebola is his account of the epidemic, centering on the residents of a neighborhood swept up in the emergency.

Lipton follows the lives of young men and women over a period of seven years, revealing what the epidemic looked like on the ground. He explores its causes, impacts, and legacies in a place where crisis might be considered the norm, not the exception. The emergency was disruptive and challenging, not least due to the short-term international response. Yet for many youths Ebola was a time of unusual clarity on the ambiguities around care, work, and coming of age experienced in a context of vast economic and social inequalities. Lipton shows how residents of this historically cosmopolitan West African city drew on centuries-old frameworks for managing foreign intervention. In the Time of Ebola questions dominant framings of crisis and offers ways of theorizing, researching, and responding to emergencies that make the home, the family, and "ordinary life" their starting point.

In South Africa, the decade of 1980-1990 not only saw the mobilisation of the popular masses, but also the marked escalation of the armed struggle inside the country, initiated and waged by the African National Congress (ANC). The liberation movement, headed by the ANC-led Congress Alliance, took major strides which finally broke the backbone of white supremacist rule. This book examines and analyses the events leading to the settlement of democracy in South Africa during this period. Amongst other topics, the subject matter of this book also includes a discussion of -

  • The apartheid regime
  • ANC underground, armed actions and popular resistance
  • Liberation struggle in the 1980s in the Eastern Cape
  • Bophuthatswana and the role of the UDF in the Western Transvaal
  • Trade Unionism

Trauma-informed practices have become an increasingly essential part of librarianship since the COVID-19 global pandemic. Trauma can result from a single negative event or repeated exposure to negative events over time and can manifest in many forms. Trauma-informed approaches to leadership seek to understand and consider an individual's holistic life experiences, particularly negative consequences of trauma, when determining how to best support and interact with them in the workplace.

This book explores Rabindranath Tagore's distinctive argument for peace-in spiritual rather than in political-terms. Drawing on seminal texts by Tagore, the book presents the reader with a comprehensive overview of Gurudev's seemingly contradictory notions of individual freedom, universal love for humanity and faith in the great Eastern nation. It underlines Tagore's argument that peace could be best affected not by a league of nations but in educational institutions and that the "Religion of Man" lay in the truth of inter-relationships between human beings.

A concise handy guide to Tagore's philosophy, this book will be essential for students and scholars of philosophy, Tagore studies, peace and conflict studies and South Asian studies.

An African-centered account of the protracted battle to end the slave trade, connecting local and global histories

In Worlds of Unfreedom, Roquinaldo Ferreira recasts West Central Africa as a key battleground in the struggle to abolish the transatlantic slave trade between the 1830s and the 1860s. Ferreira foregrounds the experiences and agency of enslaved Africans, challenging Eurocentric narratives that marginalize African participation in abolition efforts. Drawing on extensive archival research across multiple continents, he shows how enslaved people actively resisted the oppressive systems that sought to commodify their lives. Doing so, he integrates microhistorical analysis with broader world history, exploring individual trajectories to unravel complex global phenomena. Worlds of Unfreedom bridges a crucial gap by connecting Atlantic and Indian Ocean histories, revealing how abolitionist measures often camouflaged new forms of labor exploitation and forced migration under emerging colonial regimes.

Ferreira's analysis spans the globe, from Luanda, the kingdom of Kongo, and the Lunda Empire to Havana, Rio de Janeiro, New York City, and Reunion Island. He examines the South Atlantic as a space where politics and race-making were deeply intertwined, with ideas and identities crossing and recrossing the ocean. He considers Portugal's strategic use of abolition efforts for territorial expansion, its impact on the kingdom of Kongo, and the intricate networks linking West Central Africa to Cuba and Brazil. With Worlds of Unfreedom, Ferreira shows how multiple actors, including Africans, built anti-slave trade politics from the margins. His nuanced, Africa-centered perspective on abolition highlights the resilience and contributions of enslaved Africans in shaping the course of history.

This book examines the challenges and opportunities of administrative and territorial reconstruction in Africa from independence until the present time. In light of the rise of separatist movements in various African states and the ethnic, linguistic, and religious heterogeneity of many African societies, the book sheds new light on the fragmentation and decentralization of the African continent. The authors analyze the mechanisms, forms, and models of decentralization practiced today in Africa, taking into account both federalist and unitary experiences of decentralization, and discuss the potential of federalism to resolve conflicts within the continent. The generalizations made in the course of such an analysis can significantly enrich the current vision of the development of the African continent and its future prospects. The book will appeal to scholars and students of political science and African studies.

This book is an outgrowth of an international conference - The Black Body: Imagining, Writing, and Re(Reading) - held at DePaul University, Chicago in 2004. The various contributing authors critically examine the changing discourses on the black body to address how it has been constituted as a site for construction and maintenance of social and political power. Drawing examples from Europe, Africa, the United States as well as other places in the Black Diaspora, the subject matter in this book discusses the raced, gendered, classed and culturally produced discourses about the black body. Through its examination of these and related issues, this book contributes to a dialogue across various disciplines about the black body, its meanings and negotiations as read, interpreted, and imagined in different frames of perception and imagination.

A new account of how Haiti under French colonial rule became a violent sugar plantation state

In the early eighteenth century, France turned to its New World colonies to help rescue the monarchy from the wartime debts of Louis XIV. This short-lived scheme ended in the first global stock market crash, known as the Mississippi Bubble. Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) was indelibly marked by the crisis, given its centrality in the slave-trading monopoly controlled by the French East Indies Company. Rising prices for enslaved people and devaluation of the Spanish silver supply triggered a diffuse rebellion that broke the company's monopoly and paved the way for what planters conceived as "free trade." In The Colony and the Company, Malick Ghachem describes how the crisis that began in financial centers abroad reverberated throughout Haiti. Beginning on the margins of white society before spreading to wealthy planters, the revolt also created political openings for Jesuit missionaries and people of color. The resulting sugar revolution, Ghachem argues, gave rise to an increasingly violent, militarized planter state from which the colony, and later Haiti, would never recover.

Ghachem shows that the wealthy planters who co-opted the rebellion were simultaneously locked in a showdown with maroon resistance. The conflict between the planters' militant defense of their prerogatives and maroon rebellion laid the foundations for a brutal history of marginalization and immiseration. Haiti became a full-fledged plantation colony held together by a ruthless form of white supremacy and enslavement, triggering a cycle of escalating violence that led to the Haitian Revolution. Tragically, Haiti's postrevolutionary future remained captive to the imperial sway of money and debt.

This book develops from the position that the colonization of Palestine-like other imperial and settler colonial projects-cannot be understood outside the grammar of race. Race and the Question of Palestine explores how race operates as a technology of power and colonial rule, a political and economic structure, a set of legal and discursive practices, and a classificatory system.

Offering a wide-ranging set of essays by historians, legal scholars, political scientists, sociologists, literary scholars, and race critical theorists, this collection illuminates how race should be understood in terms of its political work, and not as an identity category interchangeable with ethnicity, culture, or nationalism. Essays build on a long-standing tradition of theorizing race in Palestine studies and speak to four interconnected themes-the politics of racialization and regimes of race, racism and antiracism, race and capital accumulation, and Black-Palestinian solidarity. These engagements challenge the exceptionalism of the Palestinian case, and stress the importance of locating Palestine within global histories and present politics of imperialism, settler colonialism, capitalism, and heteropatriarchy.
